For what is worth, I'm 63 and I've broken in many new motorcycles. 1. (ONCE THE BIKE IS WARMED UP), vary the rpm range thru ALL the gears, that's right, 1st to 6th (this will set the rings and seat the valves. Avoid long trips at a consent speed for the first 500 miles. 2. change the oil and filter at the first 500 miles. 3. After that, change the oil and filter every 1000 miles. Of course, this is a dual sport, not an all out 2-stroke dirt bike. So don't beat on it. That's not to say you cant high rev it for short intervals (even during the break in). Sustained high revs will wear out any internal combustion engine. ALSO, DO NOT, put a tuner and a loud slip muffler on this bike. The performance gains are minimal, and you void the warranty. I love my 2024 300klx. Its light and nimble and the power is adequate
For break-in, its not just about the engine, but the transmission also. Smooth upshifts and down shifts, no jack rabbit starts and stops, and no high rev running for extended periods. another thing is, short rides to heat and cool down the engine. multiple heat cycles during break-in is good for getting everything seated. I have always used engine hours, in the past, not mileage. but riding conservatively for the first 10 hours or so, goes a long way to having a long lasting engine, that has well seated rings with no blow by, and gets all the excess material from building, out of the engine and transmission for first oil change.
hey Todd, I have just purchased CRF300L. I always obsess over taking care of my gear and perhaps it's kind of compulsion. I'm thinking about the oil change after first 500 km, the service manual says it should be done after 1k km. Do you think it can be done with regular oil that Honda recommends, or perhaps there is a special kind of oil used in the 'break-in period'? Thanks a lot in advance for any reply!
I would follow the directions in the owners manual. I've used the OEM oil in all my motorcycles. Yes, it can be more expensive, but you're talking a few bucks now and then. Follow the manufacturers recommendation... best of luck.
I just got a 2023 klx 300r used. Dude didn’t use it all that much I can really tell. But he left it pretty low on oil by the time I got it. He had it since august 2023. I’m changing the oil filter, draining and filling motor oil. Then I plan on lubing up everything the Manual says. Should I still get it looked at at my local dealership?
I'd just do a good service on the bike and ride it easy for a while. If you aren't detecting any issues, you should be fine. Keep an eye on the oil to be sure the level is holding. That motor is tough,it can hold up to a lot. Good luck.
Nice complete service .. Great Job !
Thanks 👍

Good job. I would like to see a second video with your next service. Thank you.
More to come! Thanks for watching...
