Hi mate Whenever im travelling I check and adjust (if needed) daily. Specially if im doing TET(Trans Euro Trail) then it’s a must to check the chain daily. I also take the opportunity to clean the chain. Average of 200-400km daily mostly off-road/gravel roads. When Im just riding around town then it really depends. Usually above 800km of riding. I’m still on my first chain on the CRF, bought it last year, so I don’t have a precise amount of km to share, however I’m expecting around 25.000km from it.

Good stuff and great timing. We (2x '23 crf300ls) just came back from a trip in north Georgia (USA) mountains and this came up on the trip home. Thanks for the great info. We also heard a kind of crunching glass sound when engine braking. It comes from the front of the bikes and stops when the clutch is pulled in. Anbody have ideas?
Hey mate! Glad to hear you liked the video! Hard to say without listening but crunching glass when engine braking doesn’t sound right. Could it be the sound of the chain which coincides when you left off the gas then you can hear the chain touching the teeth of the front/rear sprocket? If it is the sound of the chain do the following: - clean completely the chain. - clean completely the front/rear sprocket. - add chain lubricant - adjust the chain slack If it was your chain dangling around or too much friction with the sprockets this should help. Are you certain the noise is coming from inside the engine?
@@RoiaMoto Yes, we thought that it might be the chain and thats why we were looking there, but it sounds "different". (haha) It really seems like its coming from the front half of the bike. Sound is tough, I know. Rode buddy's and heard it after he pointed it out and then noticed on mine. Figured maybe someone else has had something similar. I think it's worth mentioning that this amount of slack is only valid if you have standard gearing. I've got 45 teeth in the back + YSS shock and slack of 5,5cm on the side stand equals to no slack at all when bike is on its wheels. In that case, to set the slack properly check the Adam Riemans video about it.
Hi Eric It is normal for the slack to be reduced once you sit on the bike. For instance, the chain will reach its tightest position if you fully compress the rear shock. In any case the chain should never get “stretched” by this.
@@RoiaMoto so just to make sure I’m doing it correctly, you adjust the slack with the bike on the kickstand? Is it okay to do it on a center stand with the wheel off the ground
My reason for asking, I’m having a problem where when taking off or doing slow speed maneuvers my chain makes an occasional weird popping noise.. close to 3k miles on the bike
Hi Eric, for the CRF300L the correct way of checking the slack is with the motorcycle on its side stand. That's how it is specified in the user's manual. I must say that I also found this to be unusual. Usually manufacture's specify the correct slack with the wheel offf the ground but it's not the case with the CRF300L.

It is normal for the slack to be reduced once you sit on the bike.
For instance, the chain will reach its tightest position if you fully compress the rear shock. In any case the chain should never get “stretched” by this.
