This technique first originated and was made famous by Dr. Mort Cooper of California. Check out his videos and books on this very subject matter called, "Change Your Voice, Change Your Life," where he talks at length on the humming technique as a rehabilitative method for restoring the voice back to its natural state. In essence, Dr. Cooper argues that the "strangled" voice called Spasmodic Dysphonia is really a "learned" habit of speaking in the lower range of the voice rather than in the more resonant or " buzzy" area of the face ( around the nasal area). Dr. Cooper also emphasizes use of diaphragmatic muscles for the most effective breathing, as "shallow" breathing (or breathing from the chest rather than the lower stomach region of the body) forces the sound out thereby causing tension to the vocal area or vocal cords, and resulting in a " choked" or "strangled" voice. Over time, this learned (albeit destructive) habit of talking breaks down the voice--which the medical community then diagnosis as a neurological disorder a.k.a. "Spasmodic Dysphonia" (which is a condition of the central nervous system, better known as the brain). Medical "professionals" offer only 2 solutions: either Botox injections (directly to the vocal cords) or surgery. Neither options is a guarantee. The alternative? Dr. Mort Cooper's NATURAL remedy: the humming technique seen in this video (of which the subject noticeably fails to credit Dr. Cooper the years of research he developed to prove his technique's effectiveness). Thank You Dr. Mort Cooper!!! (... & to this guy's video demonstration supporting Dr. Cooper's invaluable service to those of us who've been (mis)-diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia & told there were no NATURAL alternatives to restoring our voices back to their NATURAL state of good health!)

Rather than "hum" I just say "ummm" before some words/sentences. It does help me to ease into what I'm saying. I believe my SD is more than a breathing issue. I can feel the spasms as some of my words get chopped in two. Focal dystonias run in my family. This video is very helpful.

I would like to hear a before and after as I cannot tell you have any voice problem at all. My humming is very wavering.

I looked him up last evening but it says he's retired. Could you give me any leads on if someone is carrying on his amazing work or who I could turn to for help?? I am ready to get better!!!!!I am so thankful you got your voice back!!!! Blessings Mary

Humming doesn't work for certain mysphonias in my experience. Someone with adductor dysphonia can sometimes see temporary relief with humming, but usually that relief will go away several hours later. Breathing also doesn't always alleviate the issue of "Strangulation" of the folds because more breath can "overload" the folds even further.
But with most things voice related, they are subjective to the individual.
