    In Sandy Munro's Cybertruck battery teardown video he showed the details and total logic of that gap. The gap is on the bottom of the pack. The Cybertruck is designed to be off-road capable. The Cybertruck has a wade mode. The gap and several special valves and a pressurized air feed enable it to handle water intrusion. If the bottom of the battery is impacted by logs, stumps, or rocks, and is dented, this is designed to be able to take that abuse and not malfunction. 4680 cells are 80mm tall and that gap is much less than 80mm.
    Future improvements in range will be driven by improvements in cell energy density, not by cramming more cells (and mass) into the pack.

    • @TecnamTwin
      @TecnamTwin Месяц назад +1

      Yes it's not half full, but there is room for taller cells to boost capacity in the future. Aptera has a similar battery pack scheme where all vehicles have the same battery pack but different range options have various height cells. Btw, the bottom battery plate is already armored so the gap is completely unnecessary. Most other off-road vehicles have a lot more crap hanging down there to catch on stumps and rocks.

    • @MarcoNierop
      @MarcoNierop Месяц назад +1

      The cells themsef could get larger, like 46120, 46mm diameter at 120mm high. Which would not add as much weight as adding more individual cells.
      I think the gap between the cells and the bottom as a buffer to take the impact of bottom damage is not very likely, its a bonus safety element right now, but not intentional. The bottom cover plate is very thick and perfectly capable for taking that abuse. During battery day Tesla explained the cell outer wall sructure IS a structural element of the car, so I am pretty sure it is for future larger cells to increase range and power, same cells probably will be used for the Tesla Semi.

    • @hillmans69
      @hillmans69 Месяц назад +1

      @@MarcoNierop Nothing Tesla designs in, especially given the extra design time that the pandemic imposed, is accidental. They have, over the years, had many cases of battery pack damage by road hazards including many that made headlines. They actually had to retrofit a titanium plate, if I recall, at great expense. I think it was on Model S vehicles. Given the three metal rails with shock-absorbing built in, it is absolutely intentional. The best part is no part. These are parts that add significant expense, so they are deliberate.

      Did Ford Lightning do that too? If not, why not?

    • @MarcoNierop
      @MarcoNierop Месяц назад +1

      I don't think so, its a bonus safety feature right now, but I think the gap is too excessive for that, and this protection could be approached differently, like having a very thick bottom plate with some impact absorbing honeycomb aluminium panel between the cells and the bottom plate, or just more very dense foam filling the gap between the cells and the bottom plate.. You do not want that bottom plate to give way at all!
      Just think about it, if you got a dent of let say 20x10cm and 30mm deep, this would seriously compromise the sealing of the battery as the bottom plate will pull away from the edges, breaking the RTV seal, bending the bots and what not... It would not take long the battery itself will see failures with all the moisture ingress, so your battery would need replacement after all. A layer of impact resistant material would prevent the bottom plate to get dented in the first place.
      So, I am pretty sure this 40-50mm gap (Sandy's eyeballing measurement was way off) is for future larger cells to extend the Cybertrucks range and power without adding much more weight... like 46120 cells instead of 4680 cells. a Gap of about 10mm filled with impact absorbing material, preventing the bottom plate from deforming at all, would do a much better job than this huge air filled gap, leaving the bottom plate exposed to deformation to be happening at some point.

    • @extendedepicmusic5017
      @extendedepicmusic5017 Месяц назад

I don't drive enough to need it often but if I could pay, say, $10/day for days when traveling I would. 2. I personally know many people who are not buying Tesla cars specifically due to Musk's attacks of the left. Never a good idea for a CEO to take political sides publicly. 3. China economy tanking IS hurting demand. 4. There appears to be a concerted anti Tesla PR campaign in the USA and it is definitely causing consumer confusion and loss of sales to some degree.

    Alternatively, given that the empty space is on the underside of the pack - i.e. it faces the ground - it could be that it acts as a vertical crush zone so to speak. Think about it for a moment - this is a "truck" or an "off-road" vehicle thus, generally speaking, it is exposed to a harsher environment and more likely to bottom out or sustain underbody impacts. If that space is filled with more batteries then the crush zone, if any, loses effectiveness and any impacts to that bottom side of the battery pack have a much higher chance of damaging the batteries inside.

    At a bare minimum you could have offered the longer range as an order option rather than crippling the bed and costing more as a plug-in option. That could have been easily done for perhaps $5k or $10k without impacting the utility of the Cybertruck.

      Again, not many pickup truck owners use the truck for towing... 500 miles is not necessary, but will Tesla get there? yes. The current 4680 is still not up to their goal and has room for improvements. The continuous improvement will come but when is the question.

    An obvious inference from Sandy's reveal that a high proportion of the Cybertruck battery pack does not contain batteries:
    There may be potential for a removable extender pack that occupies that space. There are a number of implications of this idea:
    - it would solve the problem of taking up space in the truck bed,
    - it would add weight to the truck even when the extender is not installed and more weight overall when it is installed,
    - It would require elaborate equipment to install or remove possibly to the point of impracticality.
    The more likely use for this space is a permanent larger battery version.
    It seems like having the extender battery in the trailer may be better.

A modern insulin pump/CGM gives the user MANY warnings HOURS before their BG reaches 670. "In control" range is below 175. It would take ~150 grams of carbohydrates to go from there to 670. That's a dinner inappropriate for an insulin dependent diabetic He would have had to to bed with his BG already far too high and still rising. Consumer device readings are inaccurate above 400mg/dL so 400 indicated is potentially high enough to pass out without warning. An insulin dependent person with BG of 670 AT 2AM SHOULD NOT GET behind the wheel of a car; but call 911.

    First, let me say that I love my 2022 Model Y and it's been fun experiencing the improvements in FSD over the time I've owned the car. However, stories like the guy who was driven to the hospital have me wondering about the annoying need to jiggle the steering wheel every so often. Was he always alert enough to jiggle? It would have been nice if the articles mentioned that need and how he coped with it. Once while moving ever so slowly in rush hour traffic, I was fussed at by my car for glancing at my phone. Was the guy able to continuously look out at traffic? Secondly, I hold a bunch of Tesla stock and have noticed this trend, Sales look good and the stock goes up. Elon says something stupid and the stock falls. Then sales are good and the stock rises. Elon does something stupid and the stock falls. Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat.

    Your inaccurate reporting in this episode has me questioning how much I can trust you.
    1) Tesla settling a case does not “Show they are not at fault”. If anything, given Elon’s explicit statement that they will not settle unless they are at fault, it shows the opposite.
    Now, obviously any crash on Autopilot is the fault of the driver, as Tesla makes it explicitly clear that it is only an assist feature at this time. But, legally, Tesla was not found innocent, so please don’t report it in a misleading manner.
    2) Munro did NOT find unused space for more batteries in the Cybertruck. He found some empty space, which was not big enough for another set of batteries, and determined it was likely a safety gap, to mitigate undercarriage damage transferring to the pack. Furthermore, the idea that Tesla would strap an expansion pack to the bed, if there were space in the pack, is ludicrous.
    Please do better, as I like your channel and want to be able to trust it. Also, please include your sources in the Description for each episode, so we can verify the info.
