- A young girl runs away from home.
FRONTIER is used with permission from Chuck Kleven. Learn more at / frontiershort .
A young girl is left to her own devices when she's at her father's house. While he is busy at night entertaining female visitors and drinking, she is exploring in the woods outside or in her room, reading her favorite comic books featuring brave, intrepid heroes battling monsters and criminals.
Eventually, in imitation of one of her favorite comics about a frontier explorer, she decides to take herself camping. Self-sufficient and independent, she fares well despite her tender age, forging a life of adventure for herself.
But by the time her father realizes his daughter is missing and goes after her, reality and fantasy begin to bleed together, leading to an unexpected confrontation and encounter she will never forget.
Director Chuck Kleven and writer Elliot Brady have crafted a captivating short that combines elements of social realism with children's fantasy to capture the imaginative and emotional life of a little girl forced into independence sooner than she's ready for.
Like many great children's stories, it takes the emotions and abilities of its child characters seriously, and the writing here invests its main character's story with a great amount of respect and close attention. The little girl's world is remarkably quiet -- she says very little on the film -- and she herself is a marginal presence in her father's life. Forced on her own often, she turns to comics and reading, and as a result, has a rich imaginative life.
The visuals of the film detail both aspects of the little girl's life with a rough-hewn beauty and immediacy. The natural world that she finds herself most drawn to in both lush and ominous, while her father's world is disordered and claustrophobic. The camera's unusual angles and focus on detail seem to capture how the little girl sees the world: unable to grasp the larger context, but alert to prescient, poetic small details that communicate so much.
It's not surprising with such a vivid interior life and an all-encompassing solitude that the little girl sees herself as an adventurer, explorer and hero, a mistress of her own fate with a sense of agency. Young performer Zoe Clarke plays the little girl with a genuine sense of self-possessiveness, and the performance is less one of delivering lines with emotion than embodying a girl adrift on her own, solitary and self-contained.
Her camping trip seems to amplify her imagination, and the images become suffused with an element of visual magic, with vivid sequences that speak to her understanding of herself as a heroine amid a world full of monsters. But as brave and wild as she is, the little girl is still a child -- a truth she comes face to face with as her fantasy life takes on momentum and a life of its own.
With its dark, quiet sense of nature and an almost feral sensibility, FRONTIER in the end becomes almost like a fairy tale or a fable. Many fairy tales about children often feature characters who are alone for much of their story, and whose wits, bravery and innocence get them through challenges and confrontations.
We love these stories because they remind us of children's resilience and ability to conquer faults and fears. Our little girl in FRONTIER is no different from her classic fairy tale counterparts in her smarts, courage and open heart, but she lives in a world where there is no fairy godmother or magical animal guide -- only a human parent full of foibles, for better or for worse. They find their way back to one another, and while the little girl has taken a risk and expanded her sense of the world in the process, she still returns to a world that is all too real and ambiguous to behold.
It melted my heart when she went to hug her dad goodbye even after how he treats her daughter!!!!

I got so emotional thinking she'd just stomped it that I got teary eyed! I'm glad she didn't do it!!!
I know the berries messed her up but I’m completely distracted by how that river water didn’t give her the runs lol
She’s built different
How do you know it didn't?
I have known people who were used to water that would give others the runs.
Yeah that was some nasty looking water to say the least!
Sad that so many kids live in a home like hers.
And most of them don’t have a tent to escape with
That's literally all I could think of while watching.
It's not sad, they should be happy coz what they have some don't and wish they did,

I remember running away from my dad, (My parents are divorced) we live in Austria so there’s a lot of woods and mountains.
All I packed were chips, candy, and water. I was out for about a week until I ran out of water and passed out. I found myself
In a hospital with my mom and was happy to hear my dad went to jail. That was when I was 8, now I’m 15 and living with my mom,
siblings, and her boyfriend in Hallstatt. 😇
good for u madison,...ur lucky someone found u in time when u passed out..
Betina J What? Did that happen to you?? 😵
haha no, I was just thinking about a lil girl lost in the woods out of chips and candy.. it's never a good time a time to be out there alone lying in a forest, especially with no friends, gee... so...its awfully Good ur mum came around at the right time....
ye. My parents got a divorce because my dad would abuse my mom, she was afraid that he would do the same to me

I know it isn't real but in my head, as someone who was neglected, I'm aware there are still stories like this going on and it just breaks my heart seeing the people who created us be so careless about the life they created, and after everything we still love them conditionally, even if we don't want to.
he wasn't careless though
I think her dad whent looking for her bc he was worried he was gonna lose the last good thing in his life thats giving him hope to keep going and doesn't know how to express these emotions from events from when he was her age
This is very positive and I like it
I hope dad decides to be a parent after almost losing his daughter. Get her to a hospital already.

This reminds me of Bridge to Terabithia
That book is amazing
You said it before I could lol.
Bridge to Terabitha is more of a love story between those two kids, this girl is roughing it all on her own.
That movie is amazing 👌 but it is sad how Lesley dies 😥
No how
My interpretation of this is quite positive. I find with the films on this channel, they're not always satisfying.
My take is that through the girl running away, they both managed to escape their terrible lives. For the girl, she got to be free. She didn't have her dad telling her to stay in her room so he could get drunk with friends. She got to play for as much as she wanted and she lived, what was in her own eyes, an idyllic life.
For the dad he is able to escape whatever problems that plagued him enough to spark the desire to party and drink constantly; he is frustrated at having to go look for her. Initially, I think as he looks, although we don't see it, he starts to realise that he'll lose his daughter for real if he doesn't stop drinking or get his act together.
Deep down he loves her. I think the monster represents his drinking problems.
We don't see the father's face as he carries his daughter away but I assume it symbolises his having made a choice to turn a new leaf and she's looking on at the past, also saying goodbye, although it's more evident when she passes out.
For both of them, finding each other again may mark new positive beginnings. The music at the end also seems to be joyful and hopeful.
Idk, I just thought maybe this made sense🤣🤣🤣
I’m humbled by your review...thank you for sharing!
I got that vibe also. at the start he's aggressively brushing her off. in the end he's gently carrying her home. maybe he learned something important, and maybe she taught him
the food she is growing must of been advertised for like a 3 day growth cycle!!!!
That was some Chaz / chop cardboard magic plants.
Kids imaginations, they beleive what they see. Education videos of seeds growing up to trees in minutes mislead kids. As do super heros jumping off biuldings. The best education is from examples by parents behavior. That is if parents are good and not motherless or fatherless, a gay couple can not raise a healthy child...sorry.

@@mohammadbahrami9859 It's her dad. She escapes into a fantasy world to cope with her unhappy life, then gets dragged back to it after stumbling upon her dad (the monster) butchering the deer he saw then night before.
@@mohammadbahrami9859 That is the first thing I thought. Still think it also.
That was her dad that was looking for her ...he found her...🙄
Lol. Everyone asking why she drank the water and ate the berries when the whole point is that she's a CHILD and needs true guidance, and someone to care for her. Thankfully dad came around at the end, realizing how much he needed to change. And he did. He went from being a monster to being a father.
Karen is that youuuuu
The ending was good. But she can be The Future Tomb Raider!
This reminds me a little bit of Moonlight Kingdom but more serious, obviously. And like a lot of people in the comments are saying, I'm pretty sure that the monster at the end was her dad; the berries were just messing with her head and making her see him that way.
Her dad knows where she goes when he drinks, that's how he found her. So sad
Nah mate - he got distracted from looking for his daughter by the deer - couldnt resist killing the deer - that's what he was doing - butchering the deer - when she accidentally turned up - HE - her father - was the monster in her poisoned / drugged out state
@@juliaconnell Agree. Unfortunately her time of fantasy ends and brings her back to reality, her unhappy life with her father.

My heart broke when she was filling up her water, I'm pretty sure she was drinking apple juice though 👍
It is a story. Lot of bad comments about the dad. Irregardless the dad/character went after her. Did not quit. Found her. She's home. Any of you parents ever snarled at your kids yet still love them. Today's mind set is truly strange judging someone within a few minutes observation rather than the whole of the relationship.
Thank you! This is a really insightful comment
I completely agree. Society is so picky about how good a dad has to be, that they neglect to see the good. Even if he was the worst father, we need to recognize that he spent time and gasoline looking for her. It goes to show that even bad dad's play a useful role in society.
Also, I hate the way that boyhood and masculinity are scorned by film makers. When was the last time we watched boys do outdoor stuff? Maybe I'm being too biased.

NUMBER ONE THING IN THE WILD DONT EAT RANDOM BERRIES AND DRINK UNFILTERED WATER
The girl stands out. Also, the comic is vintage. The home is also very clean if you pay attention. Beautiful scenery. Not very smart drinking that filthy water and eating random findings. Where did the clothes all come from if she didn't pack them?
If you love her and hate him, then they both acted well.
This is the most Florida thing I've ever seen.
My golly,if I'll be taking it literally, I thought the child was devoured by that monster. Although, I think in my head, this kid is really trying to put a life on her. The monster represent the father. For the kid it's the scary ones for the father he'll be devouring anyone who stand his way to find his little girl for having the wake up call that his daughter is missing because of his inability to take care of her. However, the I'm ready, is a line that a kid can be representing that if you're in the same case as mine be brave. you can move on forward and away from the monster.don't lose hope.
such a good movie!
The water made her run and the berries made her have hallucinations..
Wow if this was an anime this would be a pretty good isekai
When she goes into the junk place, I swear there is a man sitting in the back of that trailer on the right.
So she ran away to have fun and got in a fight with a gruffalo?
OMG this was SO me as a child! Still is. 🤗
If you can't take care of a child, don't have one.
Easier said then done fool, better to give them up for adoption
Eesh! Harsh words there! Sometimes life, and things in general, happens. You ultimately can't control anything. I feel like this film depicts a lot of human imperfection and flaw, which can be found everywhere in the world as we are such creatures. Nobody's perfect, so even though it's easy to say that, I just want to remind that yeah.. stuff can happen and they can be out of one's control. We all make mistakes and one of those mistakes-- one you can't really have much control over or think thoroughly about --is having children that cannot be supported in a way that is right. I don't know, I just wanted to say that =P
Are you perfect every second? I'm not, but I am the mother of three wonderful children, one teen and two twenty-somethings. I have had occasional bad moments, even nights, but I kept being a parent and doing my best because that's what I do. I love my kids.
@@Ingrid922 Nope. Not even close. I'm a messed up individual. That's why I don't have kids, so I don't f up their life too.
Why are you taking this personally? Did I mention your name somewhere? Projecting much? The parents in this video, are reckless. At least from what I remember. My comment is like 2 years old.
@@THETRIVIALTHINGSWhy are you taking this personally? Did I mention your name somewhere? Lol. I wan't talking to you specifically,, I was just commenting in general and to the person saying to give them up for adoption.
When I was pregnant the first time, it was against my will and my mother wanted me to give her up when she was born, which no way in hell am I giving away my child. So that just made me angry remembering. Sorry to bother you. Have a good day.

This reminds me of "The Bridge to Terabithia"
So was her dad the monster? Or did I misinterpret this wrong? Like maybe the "cut" on her arm was self inflicted and when her dad came, he was the monster she was trying to get away from?
She accidently cut her arm while she was playing, she didn't cut herself on purpose.

@@iliacbaby Great work...KEEP IT UP! 👍🏽
I like the idea of learning survival skills and teaching it your children from the beginning on. In a fun way I mean. We people especially from Industrial Countries have lost our "Wild-Humanity" long ago, being able to survive in harsh conditions is mostly a death sentence. If any "inconceivably" like situations happen like a World Wide Blackout, Solarflares, Asteroid, Extreme Weather conditions and so on, I'd be one of the people who would lack in survival skills. I should really start learning... I imagined Military survival would be enough but real survival skills on a higher level is what I'd love to have.
I release that this whole message goes a bit apart from the actual story of this movie tho, but I think there are a lot of people who'd think about this as well, right?
he’s literally me
the monster was her dad?????????
reality bending is the best power
OMG! The Wendigo.
I wonder what the meaning to life and death is all about? I heard once that Its what truly matters in the end. I have no idea wheat this means. We all die, and I don't want to live forever. But life is precious. Experience life and know that life is good. But we all will die. Living forever is not something I want. Again life is precious and should never be taken for granted.
Who all thought that caterpillar was squashed? 🙋🏼♂️

Filmed in South Carolina , unfortunately there are thousand of homes there with children like her in them , it is a very poor and uneducated State of 6 million people with hundreds of small run down towns .
He is hauling her back home like a sack of feed; but, she is ready for him, now. So, the question is: Does she still have the knife? KDM
Cool. Can i get a version with a happy ending please.
This is sorta a happy ending
I agree, Chris. I'm glad he came for her so as to prevent her from dying, but her face at the end says it all...it's not a happy ending if she has to go back to live with the man from whom she fled. As a disabled woman living with, and financially dependent on, my verbally abusive narcissistic mother, I was cheering her on the entire time.
@@witchywoman4139 I don't think she fled so much as went off on her own for fun. And I'm sorry about your situation., I am also disabled and at the moment, 2 of my kids and I live with my parents. My daughter has her own apartment. But as a child I loved playing in the woods by myself. And I love bugs, toafs, frogs, salamanders, animals etc. No parent is perfect, I think this dad was just having a bad night. I haven't always been a perfect mom, but I do my best, but mostly I love them. My mom isn't always the best, but I think her parents were probably pretty hard to have as parents. They both died quite a while ago now. Some parents didn't show love much when she was a kid. She's in her mid 70's. i know it's hard. It is for me anyway. Good luck and hang in there.
@@Ingrid922 Your mom is the same age as mine, and you're right; her parents didn't show much love to her as a child either, so I know that's a huge part of her make-up. You seem to have a good outlook, but I do know how difficult it is to be an adult having to live with ones parent/s. Your kids are lucky to have an understanding and compassionate mother in you, best of luck to all of you!
Okay so I just started watching am I the only one who noticed that when she bends down to pick up the catapiller she is wearing tan shorts and a blue top yet when she she walks across to put it behind the tree she is wearing jean shorts??? Who produced and edited this?? That is a weird detail to miss... okay hope this looks more promising because after 1 minute in its kinda shady...
She's wearing the same jean shorts the whole time. They are two tone. Top is white and bottom is regular denim. Thanks for the critique. Hope you enjoy the rest of the film!
