Honestly, Scott doesn't get enough credit for what he does in the background most of the time. Either people don't notice or don't care. I LOVE his powerful voice and when he does the bass but he's just as good when he does things in the background. So I'm very happy that you seem to be aware of it at least
I mean...Scott has most of the solos in PTX. So if anyone doesn't get enough credit for background parts it's Kirstin and Mitch. Their background harmonies (and how well their voices blend) are really such an under-appreciated part of their sound and success.

This is one of my all time fave covers of theirs- maybe my #1. Mitch's tone here is heaven(yes, the crazy high notes are cool, but his voice here is insanely smooth and pleasant). And the video absolutely makes it for me- I get chills at how joyful and carefree the vibes are. You can hear the smiles in their voices!

I really like that you wanted to be familiar with some of their older stuff first. I have watched videos of their time on The Sing Off and the reactor will say things like "Well it was good but not Pentatonix good" or "I just expect more from Pentatonix" which just isn't fair to who they were then.

Hi Karen! You can learn! If you hum to yourself in such a way that you're making your voice sound "low", try to see if you can feel the hum / vibration in your "chest". As you "hmmmmmmmmmm" you should feel it. The best way I can describe what going into a "head" or "flipped" voice feels like is if you do that classic yodel that sounds like "yodel ay he huuuuu" Where the He Huuuu is that much higher pitch part of the yodel. The "yodel ay" is typically in your chest while the "he huuu" is in your head. The transition between those two parts is sometimes called "flipping". Full disclosure. I'm *Not* a vocal coach or voice teacher. This is just what I've learned myself or from others over the years. Let me know if that helps!
I literally just clicked onto one of Haley Reinhart's videos after I was your and Kyle's comments and it has a *perfect* example of this at 0:53. She starts in chest voice and then briefly switches into flipped/head/falsetto voice when she does the yodel. She's an awesome singer, you should check her out if you don't know her. Hey, a couple of my older faves-starting with Dog Days Are Over from the Sing Off competition. It’s an incredible arrangement that left the judges gobsmacked! I love how everyone’s voices drop out and leave Mitch to solo in the middle. Very emotional. And my Christmas favorite is Carol of the Bells, also heavily features Mitch who is amazingly talented. Do yourself the favor of watching their performances from The Sing Off. Gives you an even better sense of where they came from to where they are currently. They're performance of ET by Katy Perry specifically was an amazing place to start from, but you are absolutely right they have gone from "amazing" to "unbelievably amazing". I think you would appreciate it as much as some of the newer stuff.

Mitch as trumpet. Now the trumpet sounds weird in the original. I really love that counterpoint, when each of the trio is singing a different part of the song and yet it sounds perfectly clean.
