Can't wait to see you react to their performance of "Dog Days Are Over" on the Sing Off, that one might even top this performance (and that time it was Scott's turn to be sick)!
I'm still surprised the show didn't use Scott losing his voice as the weekly drama. I recognise that I'm biased because Scott is my favourite of the group, but it always kinda annoyed me that the judges never really commented on his performances in the last half of the season. I certainly think he deserved something after the 10th and 12th performances. (maybe they did, and it was cut out in the edit idk).
that is still one of their best even after all of these years and considering they'd only been a group for maybe 8 weeks at the most at that point is just amazing!
@@Sweeney541 Wouldn't make sense for them to do that when they already had this happen. If they had mentioned Scott being sick, I think it would have taken too much focus on Pentatonix as a team and since this is supposedly a fair contest, makes sense that they left it out and went for a different angle. Plus, finding out about the backstory to that feels much more gratifying now when he shared about it to the patrons.
You have become my favorite reactor...I love how into it you get and that you are so honest with your critique, either positive or negative! Can't wait to see your reaction to the 10th, 11th and 12th performances!
as a bassist. this is my favorite. Avi killed it. Kevin killed it. Kirstie was so in the zone she forgot to be sick for a few minutes. (you can tell she's feeling the effort it took at the end there.)
"This one is going to be hard to beat" - oh yeah, you are so right! One of my very favorite performances from PTX! But 10 and 12 are comin, man - can't wait to watch them hit you! :)
Going to start taking a shot every time you say concern. Vocal chameleon is the perfect description for Mitch’s voice and his abilities. Sometimes I get frustrated that he doesn’t have more leads but the perfect blend that Mitch and Kirstie have in their harmonies make it hard to deny not having them sing background harmonies together. Also all their years singing together really helped them establish their vocal blend. People always talk about that Scott and Mitch met when they were 10 but Mitch and Kirstie met young too when they were 8 and did a lot of singing together in groups and theatre.
It's hard to describe how they knew each other sometimes. I feel like a visual cue card of Mitch standing with Kirstie on one side, and Scott on the other with the descriptions: Ages 8-14 "Kirstie + Mitch" Friends/Sang & did Theater, Dated briefly, same school "Scott + Mitch" Friends/Sang & did Theatre Ages 15-graduation (High School) Scott begins attending "Mitch + Kirstie's" High School "Scott + Mitch" (dated briefly)/Mitch introduces Scott to Kirstie "Scott + Mitch + Kirstie" Friends/Sing & Perform 2gether/attend same school "Scott + Mitch + Kirstie" form "The Trio" then see if it sticks 😉 I'm sure I'm not completely perfect on timing and ages.. cause I haven't studied this, it's just mentioned in interviews or you see pics and videos and think you have the timing right after so many years of being a fan.. sorta.
Maschelle Mashburn close but Mitch didn’t introduce Scott and Kirstie. Scott and Kirstie met in their freshman English class when they were both 14. Mitch wasn’t in high school until the next year. Oh and Scott and Mitch didn’t date until they were 16 and 17 years old. And yes I just consulted my 🍓book for the timing on their dating. Kirstie and Scott dated too. I think before Mitch and Scott. They’re sure a confusing trio.
Stonemansteve II no all three didn’t meet at 10. Kirstie and Mitch met first at 8 if you’ve heard the stories they tell it’s when Mitch tapped her hairballs and Scott and Mitch can’t seem to get it straight if they were 8 or 10 and if it was in the play Annie or Charlie or Charlie and the chocolate factory when they met a C.A.T.S. The most recent time they talked about it on Adam Rippon’s channel they both said Annie. Scott didn’t meet Kirstie until high school.
Finally! Someone else's mind exploding after Kevin's gunshot besides mine.🤯🤣 This is definitely one of my top 3 from the Sing Off. Great reaction, Kyle
Shook, Double Shook, and the sly TM when you said "my concerns are gone" Very nice touch. This song I think cemented their win. They proved that not only could they do the classic A Capella stuff, and the dance, rhythm driven music, but that they could also branch out into a genre, that wasn't their playing field, and not only nail the genre, but nailed the performance, including a couple of their surprise moves. They truly impressed the judges and audience. And yes, they all have such a great range in their pitch, but Scott's voice has so many not only shades, but colors, it is amazing. It is fun to relive and see someone else's first moments of shock and amazement, someone who is so expressive of their love of music. Keep up the good work, and I want a cap with your TM words. Know that is a big step but when you are ready.
Actually, this is the song the term "Heavy Metal" came from, as one of the judges will say, if I remember correctly it was Ben, I think. Lol, wait until you get to Mitch's guitar solo in "Bohemian Rhapsody".... "My concerns are gone", Kyle Kholin's "Catch Phrase", and it should be on a tee shirt too, available as Merch!!! That was indeed amazing, they just keep improving. Peace, Love and Light Kyle!!!
I don't know how many times I've watched this before, but i didn't notice the dynamics until you were reacting to them. They all went silent, soft, and loud together ... what an amazing performance.
When I found Pentatonix, I had zero guidance. Nobody around me knew anything about them. I stumbled from "Carol of the Bells" to "Somebody that I Used to Know" and then saw a comment about The Sing-Off. I searched that, and "Born to Be Wild" was the first thing I saw. I think I watched this video about 40 times before I could tear myself away and click on something else. I even memorized everything the judges said; my favorite moment was Shawn's "And...and...gollee, man. Avi." Because starting with "Bells," Avi had just become the center of my musical universe.
When you said "For me, it's going to be difficult to beat this one, you guys. It's going to be difficult . . . " I thought "Buckle your f-ing seat belt!"
WooHoo! Knew you'd love this! It is probably my favorite, because they all were balls to the wall in it. Scott actually was the lead singer in a rock band in high school, so he was pretty comfortable, but it still amazes me that opera student Avi and classical cellist Kevin were such head-bangers here. And Mitch goes back and forth from harmonizing with Scott and then Kirstie without missing a note. I don't know if I could have survived watching the original show - it would have driven me crazy not to know that they ultimately won. There are still a few performances that contend with this one for top spot - you'll know 'em when you see 'em.
Kyle. My man. I hope to see you come back soon. I have thoroughly enjoyed your reactions and as a newly minted Pentaholic, I was very happy to see you react to the *entire* Sing Off series, and to each *entire* video, from start to finish. Some other reactors just start at the song and/or stop before the comments but you watch and react to the whole thing. Seeing you react to Kirstin being sick just made me want to give you a big hug since I'm old enough to be her father and I'm kinda emotional right now after watching PTX for the last hour (you know exactly what I mean). Seeing you agree with, disagree with, or jump out of your seat to clap with the judges is a real treat. On that note, when you come back, please continue down the Home Free rabbit hole because they won the fourth (and final) season of the Sing Off.
i'm not sure if it's true but i've heard that Scott forgot the words to this song (something he's known to do lol), which is why he kinda slurs his words, which i'd assumed was a stylistic choice. i never would've guessed but hearing it now, it definitely seems like he's winging it, but again, not sure if true.
oh how it brings me joy to hear your concerns and questions before hand knowing that they will once again make your concerns go away and that your questions will be answered. OMG i loved your reactions they mirrored my own the first time i saw this performance. Just awesome! the next one is ok the one they did at the end of this same episode but its gonna get better from now on!
It feels very nostalgic for me to see these again, I watched the Sing-Off with my Mum when it aired in Australia, and we’ve followed their journey ever since. I only recently got to take her to their concert in Sydney and if you EVER get the chance, you should go see them live. They are unbelievable and I’m just so happy to re-experience them through your videos. I’m loving your reactions! You’re so articulate when it comes to describing them and what they are doing and even though I’ve watched them for years, your reactions are constantly showing me something new and cool, so thanks ~
Also one of my favorites. These kids are hella talented and I'm enjoying watching you react to their earliest stuff. (I had the same reaction the first time Kevin fired off the gun)
Of all Pentatonix originals and covers, this is still one of my favorites, although Love Again is right up there too. When I was a kid, steppenwolf was the first non-country band that I heard. Born to be Wild was one of my favorites back then and still is today.
I think Avi could have sung this one in his lower range and it would have been powerful. That would have left Scott to do the motor sound but I'd like to hear Avi singing Born to be Wild in his chocolate bass. Any way, good review. Glad to see you liked it because it was done very well in keeping with the original. You hit all the best parts.
Love this reaction and performance. I had the pleasure of seeing Avi in concert last Sunday and he is incredible!! I strongly encourage everyone to go see him if he comes anywhere nearby. He’s chosen quaint cozy venues so it’s so intimate and he’s so humble and grateful.
I agree, Scott probably the most suitable voice for rock music in the group (able to be gruff and powerful). I think his voice can pull out almost all kind of music😂.
💥💥 I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE!! EVERYONE WAS SUPER IMPORTANT on this song!! Avi and Kevin KILLING that foundation!! Scott's AMAZING rock vocals!! Kirstie and Mitch SLAYING the guitar sounds.... EXTREMELY TALENTED yet all of them so young🤗 The show was hard on all the contestants! Aside from these performances they also had to perform openers for every show with the remaining groups...ALSO take note that Scott led more of the songs because his voice very strong and versatile..Mitch was always having panic attacks and he was always freaking out before going on stage AND he was nervous to use his high tenor voice because he used to get teased about it when he was younger..(all these facts are straight from his own mouth). Kirstie was also a bit insecure about taking leads...Even today they want Scott to lead most songs because his voice is strong ...(plus Scott has been on tv and stage ect.. Since he was a kid lots of videos here on YT) ..and she and Mitch can play off of it...In the end they ARE AMAZING they colab BEAUTIFULLY and THEY ARE THE BEST ACAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD!!!💥
LOL ... I knew you'd love it. You had the same reactions I had to performance the first time I saw it. The pauses and the perfectly timed ending have me bouncing off my chair every time I watch this performance. And, as sick as she was, Kirstie has the lead on the next performance which was on the same night. Fortunately, for her voice, it was country and much easier on her voice.
So stoked and excited watching you watching this because I knew you would love it and be blown away by all the cool parts. Your comments are always right on too, I was impressed you knew that "Heavy Metal" started around this time and I loved the "vocal chameleon" reference to Mitch - SO perfect. He really is that and when you get around to watching the Superfruit videos with just Mitch and Scott singing, you'll appreciate even more his uncanny ability to shift his voice to sound like anyone! Watching this one 6 more times too! Can't wait for #12!
Kyle, you mentioned that “heavy metal” as a rock genre originated about this time. In fact, the name “heavy metal” came DIRECTLY from “Born to be Wild”: “I like smoke and lightnin' Heavy metal thunder Racing with the wind And the feeling that I'm under… So, yes, you are right. 😉 BTW, I really enjoy your reactions. Keep ‘em comin’!
Sooo. Yeah. I don’t know if there is a way to go back and watch whole episodes of The Sing Off. (I think I mentioned this before.) But what one might miss by watching these one off performances was how PTX blew all of the other groups out of the water. And yet you can kind of see the mad respect PTX received from the other groups. Totally awesome to me to watch you discover Pentatonix with the same enthusiasm and excitement I had. Yep... like others have said. Just wait till Dog Days. Love the reactions!
I've come back every day just to watch your reaction. LOL I can't wait for you to get to #10, 11 & 12. They probably won't make you as happy as this, but they're great!
Another great reaction! I think this really was the point where everyone started to get the idea that these kids could pull this off...they took on two genres that were not usually in their "zone" in one night and killed both, fought through sickness, applied advice they'd been given very effectively (the silent pause), and used the gifts of each member to serve the song and make it really enjoyable. They are all smart and super hard-working on top of having immense natural talent and it's so satisfying, every time, to listen to them create something amazing together :-)
I have to say - this season of The Sing Off had some really excellent competitors. If you ever want to see some more great acapella, check out Afro Blue and their version of American Boy, or the Dartmouth Aires (specifically this season) doing Midnight by Train to Georgia (or Club Can't Handle me, or Save a horse ride a cowboy!)
I think this performance is overlooked/overshadowed because of their 8th and 10th performances...but figured you'd enjoy this one! Keep up the good work 😁
This was the first one that got me right away. I came to appreciate many of their performances later, too, but this one was immediately obviously brilliant. The same is true for the 10th performance, with two less impressive ones (for me) in between. But generally speaking, this is where it became pretty clear to a lot of people, I think, that they were gonna win this.
My favorite part of this one is at the end where Avi really mimics someone just cranking on a base guitar. So incredible how many flavors he can achieve.
I think this is one of my favorite performances, too. Your performance reacting was worth seeing again and again. Rhythm section is KILLER. I didn’t know the lyrics alluded to the beginning of metal genre either - and this was a song if my EARLY music-loving years.
What always gets me about this performance is the timing. Earlier in the season they were called out 2-3x for timing problems, and then they did THIS!!! It showed they took the judge’s feedback to heart and were working to improve. A note about performance 8: it’s in the second half of this same show, so the two songs were done about 40 minutes apart. They don’t remind people of Kirstin’s illness, because it would have already been in the minds of the viewers.
Not sure how I found this channel, but I’ve binged from the beginning tonight and it’s fabulous to watch not only PTX grow, but also you! Great content. You’ve killed my battery and it’s getting late or else I’d keep watching more.
I listen to this one over and over again to single each person out because there is so much going on that's right with this performance. Avi absolutely blew my mind with that steady, bass guitar beat throughout that song! And everything you said about everybody else I absolutely agree with. I thought it was funny when you mentioned metal before the song Started because I already knew what Ben was going to say. I'm very glad you liked it but I think they have a couple more that you might be as impressed with.
My favorite performance of theirs. (I like bikes & bass) My favorite reaction of YOURS... but you ain’t seen Dog Days yet! You had me laughing all the way thru this one!!! 🙌🙌🙌 Keep Up the great work!!!! No concerns No Mo! 🤣🤣🤣
This is one of my favorite reactions from you! Makes me appreciate this performance even more now. Just wait. The 10th and 12th performances are coming. I'm not the first nor will I be the last to say these two performances are 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Agree on all points. They were so freaking amazing from so early on. They just had this incredible knack for knowing how to arrange and navigate around any genre that got thrown at them on this show.
This was my fav at this point too. The scary thing is that they have two upcoming performances that too this. Hold on a sec. I have been trying to get you to react to The Warning for months now, and you tell us that rock is your genre? Please try Dust to Dust by them. It's a live show and their energy and stage presence is unbelievable. Once again, Dust to Dust live at Lunario...It's bangin'.
2 songs for you to react to by Home Free. 1. Seven Bridges Road an Eagles cover....Fantastic arrangement and singing by all the guys in the band. 2. Mayday. Awesome cover where you get to see Tim Fousts range and Adam Chance filling in as the Bass
The Dartmouth Aires that were mentioned by Nick at the end of the video were the ones who came in second place in this competition. They are a 16 piece college group that specializes in rock music. They are not half bad. Obviously not as good as Pentatonix, but not bad.
Agreed with everything you said. And this time, Scott, who literally carried the vocals for the song (who probably took on more than normal due to Kirstie being sick, not sure) didn't get a single mention. The judges are strange sometimes.
The best thing about it was that they were the first group to perform and they absolutely put a high standard for the rest of the groups to follow
It’s so fun to relive seen these “for the first time” through other people, and watch you get blown away by what they do 😁.
Noticing your slight text inserts.
Shook. Double shook. Fun!
And my favorite: "TM." For "My concerns are gone." Perfect!
And the little cry for "help" after the gunshot rewind. Love every caption!
Thanks for bringing them to my attention. Had passed right by when watching the first time. Had to go back to catch them.

And the feeling that I'm under…
So, yes, you are right. 😉
BTW, I really enjoy your reactions. Keep ‘em comin’!
Oh yeah! I loooooved this one. They work so well together. Great reaction.
Sooo.
"My concerns are gone". Again? right? you know how good these guys are. Why have concerns?
I think I watched this here before, but just re-watched. Loved the reaction. Also one of my top 3, but I have always loved this song.
I've come back every day just to watch your reaction. LOL I can't wait for you to get to #10, 11 & 12. They probably won't make you as happy as this, but they're great!
Shook too! Why does this episode always make me cry? Great reaction.
I hardly ever subscribe any channel on RUclips. I subscribed after your third video. Still here. Kinda speaks for my appreciation ;-)
By far my favourite on the show!!!
You are the first one that has reacted to that second awesome break thet did! Blows my mind every time.
Good on you!
Awesome reaction 👏 This was one of my favorites ...but just wait for Number #10 and #12 ....My favorite is #12 😊
I think this performance is overlooked/overshadowed because of their 8th and 10th performances...but figured you'd enjoy this one! Keep up the good work 😁
I love the annotations.
This was the first one that got me right away. I came to appreciate many of their performances later, too, but this one was immediately obviously brilliant.
The same is true for the 10th performance, with two less impressive ones (for me) in between. But generally speaking, this is where it became pretty clear to a lot of people, I think, that they were gonna win this.
loved your reaction to this, I felt the same. WOW how great this performance is
My favorite part of this one is at the end where Avi really mimics someone just cranking on a base guitar. So incredible how many flavors he can achieve.
I love. your reactions and I LOVE PTX!
Adding to the chorus of "wait until Dog days".... :) love the side comment additions!
Kevin and Avi.........nuff said 🤘
Ohhh if I could only give more than one likes, i definitely would. Couldn't help but grin seeing your shook reactions!
😘🇵🇭
oh the ol meat and potatoes best combo ever
LOL. Told ya they got better! This one is in my playlist!. This is just awesome, it is one of my favs!! Love your reaction!!
This is in my top 3 PTX Sing Off performances. My favorite will always be 12 but this one and 10 are my other favs.
I knew you'd love this performance! This was my favorite when they were on the show!
Shook... Double Shook... Yeah man, same. 😹
This was my fave performance by far. Even without headphones u can tell Avi and Kevin are the totally dominating this song.
It's funny you should mention metal. This song was it. Heavy metal thunder was born here.
"This is going to be hard to beat"
PTX - "Hold my beer"
No kidding. This is not the top by far. :)
Hi Kyle, in my opinion they are phenomenal - they are the best!
This is also one of my faves😁 but the 10th and 12th ❤️❤️ wow
My favorite performance of theirs. (I like bikes & bass) My favorite reaction of YOURS... but you ain’t seen Dog Days yet!
You had me laughing all the way thru this one!!! 🙌🙌🙌 Keep Up the great work!!!! No concerns No Mo! 🤣🤣🤣
My God Avi....
Yeah that's what she said. 😂🤣😂🤣
Love this performance. Avi's bass was nuts and scott and the rest killed it.
Glad you finally saw this one. I’ve been asking for it since you started. This was the performance where I just fell in love with them!
Hi Kyle Avi has an amazing song called Change on the rise.you will love it.ive never heard anything like before
They do beat this with the next two. I can’t wait for them.
This is one of my favorite reactions from you! Makes me appreciate this performance even more now.
Just wait. The 10th and 12th performances are coming. I'm not the first nor will I be the last to say these two performances are 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Can't wait until you see10 and 12! I love this one too!
Dude, you really should TM your "My concerns are gone", it is hilarious!
Stay tuned, they get better than this and this is one of my favorite performances too. Love your authentic reactions as always!!
Your reaction was my reaction. They make almost any kind of music their own. They constantly amaze me.
Another great reaction! This is my second favorite sing-off performance by them. Also love the TM you threw in there next to your "catchphrase".
Just wait for 10, 11, & 12💙 love your reactions!!!
2 songs for you to react to by Home Free. 1. Seven Bridges Road an Eagles cover....Fantastic arrangement and singing by all the guys in the band. 2. Mayday. Awesome cover where you get to see Tim Fousts range and Adam Chance filling in as the Bass
Your eyes looked like they were about to blow out of your face! Lol
Cant wait to see you react to 10th and 12th performances!
The Dartmouth Aires that were mentioned by Nick at the end of the video were the ones who came in second place in this competition. They are a 16 piece college group that specializes in rock music. They are not half bad. Obviously not as good as Pentatonix, but not bad.
Can't wait for your reactions to the rest.
Fantastic reaction!!!
This was really the beginning of them killing their final performances. Nice to see you Kyle! Hi from Chicago.
Agreed with everything you said. And this time, Scott, who literally carried the vocals for the song (who probably took on more than normal due to Kirstie being sick, not sure) didn't get a single mention. The judges are strange sometimes.
Loving this series.
