    I’ve found when people say they dislike politics in movies, they dislike any politics that differ from their own.

    Shockingly loved the movie. Though it was smart to take no side.
    In some very subtle way, I think they "did" pick a side. It wasn't the federal government.

    Re: Beau is Afraid; I felt the same way after seeing it in the theater (I think I even said it was downright bad), but after thinking more about it I watched it again in 2 parts at home a few months later and it was much, much more enjoyable. I'd love to see these over-long films be broken down into miniseries on TV honestly... much more digestible and gives you more time to consider what's happening.

    I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Civil War. I was VERY on the fence about seeing it, but I'm a pretty big Alex Garland fan, and I saw him him talking about it in various interviews, so I had a fairly good idea of what I was in for. I'm glad I went. I liked it. I had a fairly big point of frustration by the end, but it had nothing to do with politics. Something big happens, and I don't know how I'm "supposed" to feel about it. I'm not sure what the message of that event is supposed to be. Overall, it was a cool experience though. It really is about the reporters, like people have been saying. I didn't know how that would play, but I thought it played well. That acting was great, across the board.

    There is a nice interview with Garland where he really DOES emphasize the journalist "agenda", a word he used explicitly.

    I hate the "Just turn off your brain and enjoy it," mantra. I can't force myself to be entertained by something. If I have to force myself to like something, it is not really for me.
    Thank you for this wrap-up, James! I hope you are feeling better.

  • @Miskatonic1927
    @Miskatonic1927 Месяц назад +3

    "and conservative market Denver." In what universe is Denver conservative?!?! 🙄 Our city of Denver is something like 75% liberal based on the amount of elections that are huge wins by Democrats and even the Green Party regularly getting 5% in city wide elections and US House district 1.
    Even our suburbs of Denver lean very heavily towards Democratic Party voting. It is the largest population center in Colorado.
    Now if they had said conservative market of Colorado Springs, that would at least be more realistic.

    Being a horror fan, 2024 is more of a miss than hit. First few horror movies of the year were bland. Then, there were a few that weren't marketed enough by studios. Longlegs and Maxxine are coming out on July, so the year may turn around.

    I saw 'Civil War' yesterday, and for me it was miss. The only parts I really liked were the scenes with Jesse Plemons and the finale when they breach the White House (also the closing credits with that disturbing Abu Ghraib style picture). Ken Burns' 'Civil War' however is brilliant.

    I know that you said that we haven’t had a breakout hit for horror. My guess is that Maxxxine Ti Wests third movie in his (Mia Goth trilogy X and Pearl were the others) will do pretty well for horror movies I have friends that are not horror fans per say and are excited to see that movie just because of Mia Goth. So here’s hoping that movie is good and will do well at the box office.

    With people locked in cult mentality, there is no reaching them with facts. Any attempt to do so raises people's defenses and they double down on their programming. The only way to get thru to someone in a cult is the use of metaphor and analogy, which Civil War does with it's fictional scenario and imprecise definition of the conflict, it's causes or a bias towards a "side" (see also: the OG Star Trek).
    That said, if people come away from this remembering that they are human beings, first, and recognize that polite society is a thin veneer that, once lost, is difficult to restore... perhaps Alex Garland's story choices will have been the right ones.

  • @Corvetjoe1
    @Corvetjoe1 Месяц назад

    I thought it was brilliant. It reminds me of a realistic Christopher Nolan movie with hints of an Apocalypse Now style vibe. The music took me to the post Vietnam era.
    Many wanted to know the cause of the war but the context of the war is not important. Most 21st century Americans (except the naive) know how this could happen.
    Overall, this movie was an essay warning us (Americans) to not let our politicians lead us in this direction because…, in a war everyone loses.
    A future cult classic for sure!

    I really enjoyed Civil War. Easily one of the best movies of the year for me. Some great scenes with some lovely acting. Very stylish and very very unsettling. Jesse Plemons is getting a lot of attention for his work(well deserved), but let him not take away from Kirsten, Wagner, Stephen, Cailee, Nick and the rest of the supporting cast.

    My Top Ten Movies of 2024 (so far and subject to change):
    -Monkey Man
    -Late Night with the Devil
    -Love Lies Bleeding
    -Civil War
    -Dune Part 2
    Note: Other than Dune Part 2, these movies are flawed and pale in comparison to 2023’s top films.

    I dislike it when you say "liberal" or "conservative" biases like they are two sides of the same coin. Any point of politics has two sides and your phraseology gives the impression that both sides are equally valid. If Nazis advocate the extermination of the jews, Romani, homosexuals, disabled, etc then is that position right wing or is it simply despicable and evil? Same goes for facts. There are no alternative facts!
