      I had my suspicions, thanks for the info. That's pretty crappy! It's a bummer because it's a really cool new shop that's by far the closest to my house. I even mentioned my shock to the clerk and said, "really? In the past I don't remember paying that more for the special covers."
      He seemed to be trying to discourage me. Like, "you don't want this one - it's like a hundred bucks" (AKA we're trying to sell them for an inflated cost online).

      The limited edition cover is for those willing to spend their money at a local game store on a new release book. The irony is that by them overpricing it, they’ve proven why people shouldn’t buy from local gamestores.

    I found the book really useful and definitely was one of the better additional supplement books so far for 5th edition. Also loved that they brought back old Xanathar the villian from the old SSI-Westwood Dungeon master clone AD&D Eye of the Beholder(if you never played it, your party is tasked by the lords of Waterdeep to investigate a criminal group working from deep under the city and it turns out to be lead by Xanathar the beholder)

      Thanks! They have sent me stuff in the past, but I waited until a week before release before reaching out and they're we're in - "we'll see what we can do and get back to you soon" mode. They finally got back to me after I bought it so I told them maybe next time. :)
      It's nice to get products for review, but I also feel blessed to be in a place where I have a bit of revenue from the channel, Patreon, and Amazon affiliate to be able to justify purchases for review occasionally.

      Spreading class option across three books: more $$ for WotC. But you can look up all the classes on wiki sites. But using the web too much defeats the purpose of playing a table top game.

    • @Cerebus1000
      @Cerebus1000 6 лет назад

      Sticking all the classes and spells from Scag and the EE companion into Xanathar's Guide was mainly done for Adventure League Play, where players are only to craft a character using the PHB and one extra splat book. So this way I guess they've split Race options and Class options up.
      Not sure how this works for Spellcasters though.

    Does it have any more gish? I've heard there are new subclasses in this, which will be awesome if they have anything like the Duskblade. Delivering touch spells through a weapon was the main draw for on that and Magus. 5e's really been lacking in terms of gish.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      I do not know this gish of which you speak.

    • @helloworld2848
      @helloworld2848 6 лет назад +1

      Their is more Gish. They have several new invocations for Blade Pact (including Eldritch Smite, and Improves Pact Weapon). They also have the Hexblade, a warlock patron where you bond to a magical sword, which gives you access to Paladin smites as well as other combat. Lastly, they have the Shadow Blade spell at 2nd level that lets you create a blade of energy.

    • @nicholasmorgan7609

      "Gish" means a fighter-mage. What in Basic D&D was called an "Elf". ;)
      I don't really know where the term "gish" comes from, it seems pretty new. Back in the day, if we didn't say "Fighter/Magic-User" (or Elf, as mentioned), we mostly called them "tank-mages".

    New to D&D but should be joining my first campaign early January. I have three characters in mind at the moment one of them happens to do with the Storm Herald.
    Lizardfolk Sun Soul Monk - I dig the race and the bite is considered an unarmed strike so in theory it seems the damage will scale up as you level. Plus I like the added bonus of swim speed and the other racial traits that go along with the lizardfolk. Mini super saiyan godzilla for the win!
    Aasimar Sun Soul Monk - Specifically the Protecter Aasimar considering you get flight and an increase in radiant damage which is most of the Sun Souls abilities. Seems to go hand in hand. From what Ive read the Monk class really intrigues me and Ive seen that a few people don't care for the Sun Soul archetype but I feel like it would be a fun character to experience. Goku with wings!
    Dragonborn Storm Herald Barbarian - Most likely the Bronze Dragonborn with the lightning breath to go along with the Sea abilities of the Storm Herald. Perhaps weilding a trident and a net. Aqua-dragon-man!
    I'm having a difficult time deciding which to use first. Thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      Haha. Oh boy - how bout a human fighter? :P
      Some people just have to go nuts. They all sound pretty cool, I s'pose. I'd probably go with #3 or #1.

    • @MrAmericanBarricade
      @MrAmericanBarricade 6 лет назад +1

      So because I'm a "noob" I should start with a character a lot of people start off with instead of a character I'd be invested in and excited to play? Lol
      You've probably thought/heard of these combinations before but they seem pretty cool to me. Lol
      So far in our group there will be an Elf/Druid, Dragonborn/Fighter, Tiefling/Arcane Trickster?(it's a rouge/necromancer he says), and a Something/Cleric(not sure which race he's going to choose). There will be to more joining us but I have never met them and don't know what their choices will be.
      Thanks!

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад +1

      Sorry! Haha. I'm just throwing shade because they're all such fantastical out of the norm characters. I couldn't resist! :P We RPG scrooges might call them special snowflakes, because they really are very unique. But you're absolutely right. Go with what you are most excited to play. What you think would be the most fun from a mechanical and role-playing standpoint. I also like how you have some existing fictional characters in mind for each. I love it when players can think, "I really like so and so from that one movie". Then we can go try to make a character like that in game.
      Sounds like you've got a good party arranged and surely mayhem will ensue! :) Enjoy!

    • @MrAmericanBarricade
      @MrAmericanBarricade 6 лет назад

      I actually didn't make the fictional character comparisons until after I came up with the character. I was like oh this Lizardfolk almost sounds like a super saiyan with these Sun Soul abilities as well as the 3rd option made me thing of Aquaman after I kind of threw it together.
      I was originally going to go with the Lizardfolk because that was the first one I kind of meshed together but the Dragonborn Storm Herald is sounding really interesting at the moment. And I'm really wanting to use a net+trident combo but the trident is basically a heavier expensive spear and the net takes up your whole turn to use it(if I read it's mechanics right) I don't see why the trident can't do 1d8(one-handed) and 1d10(two-handed) instead. Maybe construct a net using chains so it can't be cut as easily as a normal net? Idk. Lol

  • @RicharddelaHarpe

    Sounds like a bit of a rehash and doesn't appear to add that much to the roleplaying. I would appreciate the section on traps most because it is hard creat a good roleplaying trap that is challenging and enhances the game. I agree with the concept of developing characters as play goes rather than rolling complex backgrounds. In my game, every session starts with the players having to draw a card from a deck I've created, which then requires them to add a development to their character. For example, traits can change, family members can send messages, allies can send assistance, a detail is added to their history, their appearance changes slightly (eg a scar, or an item of clothing is replaced), an old trait can be replaced by a new trait, and the table then discusses how these occurred and fit in. This means that each session all the players refocus on each others different characters for a few minutes which helps to get everyone into character.

      Get the handbook first definitely since it has EVERYTHING you need to play and leaves nothing basic out. This book has extended information, not the handbooks content, for people who are already playing and want to get more. If you don't have the player's handbook yet, get it before this, xanathar's guide is a good choice for a second buy still, good stuff in this too.

      Eh, I don't think we're anywhere near the end yet. I think we'll see more unearthed Arcana, and possibly (hopefully) branching out into some different settings.

      the only reason I am saying that 3 years into the hated 4e they announced the end of the line after a few more books and they were developing 5e

      5e is beloved so a new edition will IMO be 5.5e

      5E's reception is night and day difference from 4E. 4E was rejected by a LOT of core fans and did not have a good reputation overall. 5e has been pretty universally praised and embraced by the community as well as bringing in far more new players than 4E did. I don't think we're even halfway through the life of this edition.

      I don't think another edition will be a call for wizard of the coast. Hasbro calls the shots based on how many core book sells they are having and can they make more with a new set of core books 6e will come. In the past 17 years, we have gone from 3.0 launch to 5e. Also, there is not a debate 3e/Pathfinder was loved, but 4e was made because Hasbro knows best.

    Good Work! Can you explain how magic works? I had to learn how to play by myself and that is tough to understand.

    What's up with the redundant filler material from SCAG?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

      Easy to throw in and appreciated by people like me who weren't really too interested in SCAG.

      Can't say I share your appreciation. I paid for an all new book in order to receive all new content. 5E is hardly in any danger of bloat and while there's plenty of other new information in the book, I believe sub-classes and spells are something of a crown jewel to many, including myself. That's certainly not where I want to see space wasted with redundant info.
      Ah well, should have read the thing first before dropping the money on it. That's on me.

      I'm thinking so. Lot's of people getting it for $50 at their shops.

    Nice book with good content though they could have replaced the names pages with the Artificer and Mystic classes... But I guess its nice for people that doesn't know how to use Google.

      Rubén Richarte Mike Mearls has recently said Artificer and Mystic are undergoing final playtesting and should be available soon. Maybe even for free.

    Does the book smell bad? All of the 5e books I've bought have had a foul odor.

      Randy Cox really? Not one of my books have ever smelt bad...did you buy them from a game store or online from like amazon? Amazon has aleays given me excellent condition books but the two times I bought from a game store the books had some kind of problem with them.

    • @nickmoniker

      All of mine came from Amazon. I should go to our local game store and sniff their books.

      Randy Cox that is odd indeed. Thats never happened to me.

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад +1

      Funny you should mention that! I have not noticed that in previous books, but within seconds of carrying this book out of the shop, I noticed that it DID smell pretty bad. Haha! I haven't really noticed it since then. Perhaps it's just the fresh out of the box smell and it has now faded away.

    At least ~20% of the book is utterly pointless, 17 pages for random names (the internet exists for this) and 20 for random encounters (DMG exists for this). 10 more pages (your imaginations exists for this) if you count the backgrounds/personalities stuff. So its 50$ on the official site, meaning if 20% is utterly pointless, your wasting 10$ at least, pointless content. Try to buy it for under 40$ if possible.

    This is a great book. Totally not what I expected from Xanathar's personality (little cringe imo).

      Yeah, I can see why you'd say that. It was a little odd to me too.
