Just got Volo's yesterday, I like it, ive heard some complaints about not enough stat blocks, but I appreciate the lore and background stuff, cause as a DM its a great mine for Ideas and concepts. Also that limited edition cover is awsome, which I can't believe I was still able to get at my local store lol. Great Video.
I mean great to have a flip through and I appreciate that but like 2 minutes of just looking at the front cover? It's a great cover and I want the book solely because of it but damn, had to skip a lot. Short for sounding quite negative I just wanted to leave honest feedback but thanks for the video though.
@@WASD20 I was tired and perhaps a little grouchy when I watched this though. It was super handy for you to compare the monster manual to volo. I think volo is more of what I'm after do cheers for that
Received my Volo's Guide to Monsters today. I cover my books with a brown paper grocery bag paper. I am tough on books so I try to keep the covers protected. I did this with my original first edition AD&D books which I still have. They still look pretty good.
Man I want that book... Very informative. My problem is whenever I go to look at one its covered in plastic. So thanks for showing us the inside. Those extra races and roleplaying styles for monsters is very very tempting!
Thanks for the review. I've seen other reviews elsewhere, but really found your approach and flip through informative. Volo's Guide has been added to my "need to buy" list.
Crazier things have happened. Like 3 players all playing Fighter and human and yet playing 3 Diffrent styles. Seem like Everyone forgot Yuan-ti Pureblood as playable race in VGM
I didn't know this limited edition was a thing before watching this. I was already teetering on picking up the book itself. But now I have paused at 2:38 and gone and ordered one of the limited edition copies. Impulse buy that I know I will be satisfied with. That cover is seeping coolness. Now I will resume the video
How do you get those variants of the books, the cover looks different than on amazon (edit: never mind I hadn’t seen the video yet when I commented it, you explain in the video)
That would be so helpful! I'm always have to find and create home-brew rules for other races. It'll be nice to have more racial options with set rules that are balanced and well rounded. Thanks for the preview, all the ones I saw were shrink-wrapped so I wasn't sure what was inside.
Im starting with d&d and I don't got a lot of money, yet I would love the books. My question is if I buy volo's guide would the monster manual be redundant or should I just get the monster manual and skip volo's guide?
Monster manual is required if you are dm. Every time a creature comes up in any book including the players handbook and dmg, their stats aren't listed up front to save space. Instead, you need to look them up in the MM. However, if you are a player and just want a pet horse or something but don't know it's stats... just google "horse 5e". Neither are necessary for a player.
I used to play an Aasimar a good year and half ago, I always took the racial features mentioned in the DMG. And then the Volo's Guide to Monsters comes out.. and BAM; I suddenly got wings now.. Haven't had the chance to play her tho, she was my first character but since I moved to a different country, I haven't played any D&D anymore (as a player), but I still play as a DM from time to time online with random people. But right now I haven't had time for that either, trying to figure out Fantasy Grounds. (I would like to mention, my brother likes to play monster characters himself, he was a Kobold Bard back in the time when I was an Aasimar.. xD I was the one working with him on the racial feats etc, since our groups DM was.. well, not interested in it. :P) But yeah, cool video! I sadly don't have the VGtM yet, but I plan on getting it within the next months. I had the chance to look into it and I simply can't wait until it's part of my collection. But once I have it; it will be hard for me to decide on what I should build an adventure/encounter of, there's simply too much good stuffs to choose from! Beholders sound very, very cool- (I have never played a game featuring a Beholder) and they don't necessarily have to be aggressive beings, I could imagine building a campaign for level 1 to level 4 characters about a beholder.. :D (But oh well, I've always had the wish to start off with a powerful being, like a Tiamat or an adult dragon.. It's a cool adventure hook! If it ends in a total party kill, then the players were just not mentally ready for it. If you gotta run, you gotta run after all.) Beholders can be talked to, and you can come to an agreement with them. :3 Maybe they will be your patron to your next adventure? You could be requested to take down a different Beholder who's heavily guarded by minions, which the party could take care off..
They do mention kraken priests tho! (and sea spawn / deep scions make good minions too for a kraken) But other than that, there's no deep lore about the Kraken itself..
you were the one that got me into d&d in the first place. I just wanted to thank you for that.
Thanks for the support, Kaden. :)
i like how it talks about iconic monsters in the first chapter, yet there aren't any dragons. you know the title creature of the franchise
"This book is not a monster manual. It is kind of a small monster manual."
Nice.
Definitely worth the money. Especially if you're way in to monster lore.

thanks for making this video short and sweet, all other reviews were like 2 hours long haha
:D Thanks!
That is a Ki-Rin on the first inside page, Nate.
Okay,you saw it....lol.

Honest feedback always appreciated!

Great idea! And then you can draw cool pictures and maps all over them. :P

Cool! Happy to help.
Kody Yount I bought mine just for the Kenku player race section! 😆
Goliaths were in the Elemental Evil Player's Companion which is a free PDF on Wizard's DnD site and is usable in Adventure League.
12:57 Luke? Is that you?
just ordered my copy. should come tomorrow. art looks great.
your video was the deciding factor for me
Cool! Enjoy!
Thanks for the review. I've seen other reviews elsewhere, but really found your approach and flip through informative. Volo's Guide has been added to my "need to buy" list.

Soy milk thats what I use to tell my mother, when i was much younger and she did my laundry.
The more proprietary and entrenched in a house setting they make it, the less interesting it is to me. This book is definitely on that side of things.
4:42 pause it. If you don’t see it try 4:41 or 4:43
That collectors edition! 😚
I got my regular edition, and I love it!
It's a great book.
Kobold Press Tome of Beasts. Awesome. Volo's guide. is pretty good. I really like the alternate art cover.
This and sword coast guide are both may favored books in the 5th edition and i would like the next monster manual to be more like this
a friend is playing a tobaxi warlock in much the style of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland
NATE! No lies, this is a BRILLIANT book review, love your coverage. ^^;
Thanks!

Great video, Nate! Thank you.
I also like to keep monsters rare. It makes them way more interesting.
Great review, Nate! If I didn't already own it, I would want to buy it.
That looks like a good book a nice variety and variants
Great review Sir, I could not help myself I picked up both of them.😁
How do you get those variants of the books, the cover looks different than on amazon (edit: never mind I hadn’t seen the video yet when I commented it, you explain in the video)

Many thanks for the review; can see me investing in this soon!
I know I'm late, but should I get this or the monster manual? I'm the DM of a new campaign and other than the free PDF's I have no more monsters.
I have also been home brewing some monsters but it's very time consuming and I just want some monsters to populate my areas.
The monster manual should definitely be purchased first in my opinion.
Thanks
Sounds like a cool book, but it's all tied to Forgotten Realms. Too bad other settings get ignored.
Im starting with d&d and I don't got a lot of money, yet I would love the books. My question is if I buy volo's guide would the monster manual be redundant or should I just get the monster manual and skip volo's guide?
Definitely get the Monster Manual before this. This one is much more optional.

Should I buy the Monster Manual, or Volo's Guide. I already have the Player's Handbook and the Dungeon Master's Guide.
I would say Monster Manual first. Definitely.
Thanks.
i would love if they did a mystaran monsters manual.

the monster on inside page is a kirin, very powerful beast
This was a great video, I now want to buy the book... especially for the NPC's in back. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching!
That version now can cost from $500 to $800
Fuck the red logo. I think they should all look more like that special edition.
Your shirt..................Is awesome..........
Would this work for me if I dont have monster manual? Has it like basic monsters?
It would work, but I would definitely recommend getting the monster manual before you get this.
As a Latin student I really want to call it wolo's guide to monsters
Kirin first page I'd say
Hey guys do anyone know we're I can get reprints of old D&D 2nd or any pdf were I can print them my self.
Check www.drivethrurpg.com

Does it give lore info on Krakens?
Linky64V2 No, the monsters it goes into in depth are: Beholders, Giants, Gnolls, Goblinoids, Hags, Kobolds, Mindflayers, Orcs and Yuan-Ti.
Thanks!
They do mention kraken priests tho! (and sea spawn / deep scions make good minions too for a kraken)
But other than that, there's no deep lore about the Kraken itself..
"New-ish...." :D
How many pages are these?
I don't have it with me, but you can see in the table of contents in the video.
Is of a game ? 💁 Oh 😦 perhaps based on true mythology 😏
You need to spend more time fondling the covers.
DnD ASMR?
