In other words ... don't play a thief and then pull he DM aside for some side thief adventure. Everyone hates "OK, hang on, I have too talk to the DM" then "OK, DM, so I sneak away from the party and do X". ie; the game is for everyone, not several separate mini-games.

I accidentally volunteered to be a DM for my younger cousins (I'm 26, they're all around 15/14). They all have pretty bad social anxiety, and we aren't very close. They really want to play, but needed a DM. I'm hoping this can be a fun way for us to hang out, and bring them out of their shell a bit!

I’m about the same age, I got into DnD while deployed in the army. We had limited resources and no power, so it was perfect for down time.
I now play pathfinder in a group of about 10 we are all prior military law enforcement guys and we’ve had the campaign running for about 6-7 years.
It’s tough to learn but stick with it and don’t be afraid to go to your local gaming store see if there are any groups you can play with.
I’ve had so many laughs, memories and good times playing.
I’m currently about to start teaching my wife and three sons how to play, maybe spark interest and have good family laughs as well.
Good luck on your journey! Biggest tip I can give once you learn the rules, build a character that fits your own personality.
Find something that comes naturally to you or you enjoy.
Do you like gambling? A chaotic based character might be for you.
One of the most fun characters I played personally was a witch.
I didn’t do lots of damage but I made such a headache for my DM when fighting just being in a supportive role and the utility I brought to the group made me feel like a valued part.

God I relate, being a "nerdy" and quiet loner with few friends who either love the same stuff but aren't close by at ALL to do it with you or friends close by but aren't into it is so inconvenient especially when you hate socializing with new people I mean hell I met all my friends because they talked to me first or I was forced to talk to them and eventually warmed up ( somewhat ) to them 😭

I can relate, it's really hard to get into group activities when you have social anxiety. I would recommend online D&D at first. People are usually friendly with beginners and if you do not like the group you can just disconnect. Local shops and D&D groups are risky, because you might run into a bunch of idiots first time and that is a way harder impression thenan online one and might make you lose interest completely in the game.

Excellent video as always Nate, and welcome to any new D&D players (or those considering it) who are watching! Definitely agree with your advice that it's best to find someone else who already knows how to play and join a session. You can even ask to "observe" a few sessions first to understand how the game works. Or just grab/borrow a box set or the Player's Handbook and try to create a character or two to get started, that's how I began 😄

Critical Roll and shows like Big Bang theory, Dangerous creatures even the actual movie itself have assisted in creating interest in the Hobby. This can be seen as a good thing. The down side is the investment as the costs of books and the rules updates are a thing that can impact new players. What would you invest in a few hundred dollars of books and sets only to have to replace them in a few years time. Unlike a board game you can essentially just get the one box and run it without the problem.

When I first started playing d and d the "map" was a table top, paper, and pencil. The player pieces and monsters were bottle caps, coins, salt and pepper shakers, and kids toys. Best games I ever played!!!!

I have two other suggestions: 1 videogame, 1 5e compatible.
Sometimes people learn by doing and with a videogame angle Solasta: Crown of the Magister would be a good place to get your feet wet with 5e in video game form since its the closest in accuracy to how the 5e system works. Tho bear in mind your gm cannot replicate what Solasta does and you may have to pay a bit more for other classes but if you wanna be familiar with 5e it wouldnt hurt to play Solasta beforehand.
Alternatively if you wanted a more streamlined approach to 5e based on an older version of dnd then Izegrim Creation's Bugbears and Borderlands might be worth checking out. For a dollar for the core book (or two for seperate versions for both player and gm) you will be able to play 5e in said streamlined format whilst still able to play all 5e modules (albeit with some cross referencing since skill checks have been trimmed in favor of direct ability checks) though converting bugbears and borderlands pcs to 5e proper might need some work due to said streamlining.

Start with 4-5. I started with 9 and no one could shut up for 5 minutes for me to describe a scene.
Also, don't allow a lot of pets. Party pets become annoying to keep track of.
If you are trying to create a good fight for a high level party, add more enemies than there are players. It makes it so they have to move, consider those around them, and be smarter in battle rather than saying "I want to bonk" over and over.
Currently, I am DMing for a campaign that has been going for 2 years in a homebrew campaign with the world slowly falling into nonexistence as the gods rage war in the mortal realms. The party has a piece of the overgod and must find the other 4 pieces scattered through the realms. Lost gods try to tempt or help the party along the way. We started with around 7 people and some have come and gone. Currently, we are on 5-6 and are facing the problem of too many rogues.

I would argue that buying the "Old School Essentials" rules book, is a good way to get into D&D, and then move onto 5e later, if you want to. OSE (using ascending armor class!) is quite newbie friendly! It's basically the old D&D Basic/Expert rules, redone in an easy to understand/look up format.

I may jave gone a bit overboard on more physical propa to keep them engaged, but im thinking it may be the way to keep them interested. Time will tell!

Are there RPGs or Wargames designed specifically for 3D printed models. Not like their specific set, but where you just need "types" of models for it to work?

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  Месяц назад

Yes there are lots of war games and skirmish games.
RPG’s are less common, but there might be some. In general, RPG’s are so open and flexible that any models you think could work, could definitely work.
Check out One Page Rules, Titanforge, or Idols of torment for war/skirmish games.

Ive been wanting to play DnD since i was a kid, but never had a group to play with. I went to the one comic shop in my community, but the group that ran the shop was incredibly xenophobic.
I walked up to the table they were sitting at, all dressed in elf ears, wizard hats, and mock helmets, and asked "hey, ive always wanted to play DnD, can i join you?"
They all stopped what they were going and stared at me, motionless, silent, petrified, as if they were staring at a ghost.
After one of the longest minutes in my life i just said "nevermind" and walked out of the store.
I would look online for games, but cannot afford internet so....

What If Dungeons and Dragons were a miniature war gaming experience like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, here's a possible scenario:
*Title:* Dungeons and Dragons: Realm of Adventure
    *Game Overview:*
Players take on the roles of adventurers, guiding miniature parties through fantastical realms. The game board comes alive, transporting players into the world of Faerun.
    *Gameplay:*
    1. Choose your party: Select miniatures representing iconic classes (Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, etc.).
    2. Roll the dice: Determine initiative, movement, combat outcomes, and skill checks.
    3. Explore realms: Battle through dungeons, forests, and cities, overcoming challenges.
    4. Encounter legendary creatures: Dragons, Beholders, Mind Flayers, and more.
    *Jumanji Twist:*
As players progress, the game board changes, reflecting the consequences of their actions:
    - Losing battles unleashes darkness, spreading evil forces.
    - Winning battles pushes back the darkness, revealing hidden treasures.
    - Drawing certain cards summons powerful allies or foes, altering the game's course.
    *Transported into Faerun:*
Players are sucked into the game, becoming adventurers in the Realm:
    - Navigate treacherous terrain, avoiding deadly traps.
    - Interact with iconic characters: Drizzt, Elminster, or Vecna.
    - Make strategic decisions, influencing the fate of Faerun.
    *Quests and Challenges:*
    - Retrieve the Eye of Vecna.
    - Defeat the Cult of the Dragon.
    - Escape the Underdark.
    *Consequences:*
    - Failure: Darkness consumes Faerun.
    - Victory: The Realm is saved, and heroes rise.
    *Game Modes:*
    1. Solo: Battle through a narrative campaign.
    2. Multiplayer: Compete against friends, form alliances, or engage in cooperative play.
    *Expansions:*
    - New classes and miniatures.
    - Additional realms (Greyhawk, Ravenloft).
    - Alternate scenarios (Forgotten Realms, Eberron).
    *Miniature Packs:*
    - Monster packs (Goblins, Undead, etc.).
    - Hero packs (legendary characters).
    - Terrain packs (dungeons, forests, etc.).
    *Digital Integration:*
    - Scan miniatures to unlock digital characters.
    - Access digital campaigns and quests.
    - Track progress and character development.
Embark on this thrilling adventure, navigating the perils of Faerun. Will you answer the call to save the Realm?
    *Special Features:*
    - Dynamic Weather and Time systems.
    - Environmental Hazards (traps, puzzles).
    - NPC interactions and alliances.
Get ready to roll for initiative!
