I bought the Fujifilm X-T1 instead of the Fujifilm X-T5. This videos explains why I purchased the older, cheaper and less sought after camera. I show example photos from the X-T1 and tell you why it was a better purchase for me. I also talk about the Fujifilm XF35mm 1.4 lens.

Bought X-T1 on release date. It is now so beat up and worn. Rubber has all peeled off and doors bowed up. Paint all scuffed up. Dropped it so many times. Been all over the world thru freezing temps of alaskian dog sleds, humid jungles, and dry safari. Still alive and working.

I agree with everything you said about the Fuji shooting experience. The XTrans II sensor is very special and gives my photos the character that I am looking for. I have a XE-2 that I bought on the used market last year and absolutely love it for the photos it takes and it’s compact size. For me, it’s the perfect camera.

Yep the XT1 is a lovely camera and one that is going to be sought after in a few years like most old cameras they find a place in some niche areas. The XT1 has the soft colours and B&W rendition that makes many expensive ones hard to justify. P.S Get a wide hat or you will get burned in the sun 😊🇦🇺

"some cameras feel like boxes with buttons" - yes, exactly right ! I have access through work to a Sony a7iii - it is such a capable workhorse camera but using it leaves me cold and disconnected from the gear. Using my Fujis makes me work harder but I enjoy the experiece more. When it comes to the X-T1 - I have a lovely graphite version and I am absolutely keeping it, even though I have an X-T3 and an X-H1. I adore the X-Trans v2 output in raw - the color and tonality is top notch for street, landscapes, travel, portraits. 16MP is plenty for my needs as well. The T1 feels great in the hand (I use the VG with bigger lenses like the 90 f2 or 16-55 f2.8). I like the T3 and H1 as well but for me X-Trans 3 and 4 don't quite have the magic colors and tones of X-Trans v1 or v2. With the 35 1.4 or 56 1.2 this is a magic combo !

I recently bought both the X-T1 and X-T5 and I've been blown away by both. The X-T1 will mostly be used for more casual walkaround stuff, especially when I'm concerned about damaging or losing the X-T5, plus it means that my wife can use some of my Fuji lenses too. The X-T5 will be used for everything else. I'm really, really enjoying them both so far.
I definitely agree that the X-T1 and one of Fuji's f/2 lenses are an absolute bargain.

100% agree! I have an XT3 with the 33mm 1.4 for my commercial work and faster paced work and a 5D Mk4 still (not used in an age!) but for some of my portrait work and personal work I go back to the XT1 of which I have the graphite and black versions. Just love the files from that sensor! I just need to re-purchase the old 35mm 1.4 to complete the best fuji combo for that organic filmic magic. I love the XT series but even for my commercial work I don't need 40mp so the XT5, lovely as it may appear, probably won't be joining my kit.

Several years ago, after tiring of hauling around my DSLR, I wanted to go mirrorless; but couldn't justify spending much. It had to be bargain basement. And as Chris aptly notes, older cameras can do very handsomely. So I did my research on a value proposition and came up with the Olympus EM5 (c. $230) and some well regarded cheap lenses. Couldn't be happier, though I wouldn't mind owning a couple of higher quality lenses.

  • @malfunkt

Totally agree. No matter how great the next generation of camera technology gets - these older cameras will remain just as relevant. The emotion, concepts, and life that is expressed does not change. To accompany my X-E3, I picked up an X-T2 instead of the 5, as its 24mp sensor is good enough for my personal use and event photography. I work within the limitations, and express myself within those confines. I don't see the latest generation being substantially better for my needs. That said, I am curious about medium format, and I think I'll need to rent one to see what I can do with it. Love your perspective on photography.

I think X-T1 and X-T5 have a very different usability today. If I only wanted to take photos, I'd go for the X-T1... but once you wanna use the latest IBIS + autofocus tech for being able to make some cinematic shots without carrying stabilizers (tripods, gimbal, etc) while also having the best performing AF for work (meaning you would only need one camera for all) then to me it seems like the X-T5 is the "ultimate" camera.
(I don't have any experience with the differences in sesnsors, cause I shoot with Trans IV only)

I had the exact same reasoning and bought a second hand XT1 (I wanted an XT3 but there was nothing available in my corner of the world for 4 months!). Unfortunately, the previous owner forgot to mention the bug that the camera switches to panorama or superposition mode by itself, without touching or sliding the ring under the ISO dial. So, I'm shooting a composition, and it switches to panorama and I can't get my picture. Annoying thing about second hand. You might be lucky, or unlucky if the previous owner just wants to unload a broken piece of gear.

I hate charging the batteries. I hate having to bring another battery. Always having to think about charging the thing ! My Film Rangefinder Cameras are always ready to go... no batteries, no lightmeter... just so simple. It's really the best of both Worlds. Your reasoning is quite valid. Bravo for the beautiful photos.
Don't forget to walk through Souk AlWakrah. It's smaller than Souk Wakef, but more harmonious (Maybe cause it's almost in the beach). You can also go to Boulevard de Lusail (during the night) and Lusail Marina (especially the restaurant/café The House, to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of Lusail from the 6th floor). There is also the panoramic view, the snapshot photo of Doha, from the garden of Mia Park (near the Islamic museum) and also Mshereib downtown (beautiful spot for Street/architecture photography). And if you have time, you can go a bit through the desert. Maybe I'll meet you somewhere.

Hmmm. So, I just bought an absolutely mint X-T1 after much too-ing and fro-ing about whether the 24mp X-T2 may have been a better bet. But with less than 50 shots (yes, really! According to shutter count software, at least) I decided that if I wanted "old" Fujifilm then I'd go fully "old". To round out that retro vibe without emptying the bank, I'm ordering a TTArtisan 1.4 prime. A 17, 23 or 35, still weighing that up. I have an original X100, this will be the first interchangeable Fuji in the cupboard.

just for kicks I pulled out my x-t10 (same sensor as the x-t1) and did some photos with it. I think part of it comes down to pixel pitch, the x-t4 sensor photosites are 3.77 microns and the x-t10 photosites are 4.76 microns. This puts it about on par with the GFX 50 cameras, whose pixel pitch is 5.1 microns. So the x-t1 in purely technical terms is somewhat equivalent to a cropped-down GFX 50, while an x-t3/t4 have the same pixel pitch as a GFX 100. Anyways, because of that, again speaking in purely technical terms, the x-t1 gets more light per pixel. What intrigues me is testing the x-h2s against the x-t1, as the x-h2s has some other things going on to increase ISO sensitivity, thus despite it having the same pixel pitch as an x-t4 the "performance" of each photosite might be about what one could get with an x-t1. I really wish Fuji would do the x-h2s sensor in the x-t5 body, maybe one day...

I know you, you'll buy the X-T5 anyway 😀 I'm gonna give my X-T1 together with the 35mm f2 to my soon 16 yo niece who wants to study photography, it's a great camera 👍 Cheers!

Front and back rubber peeled off so I patched the exposed area with Sugru and still works fantastically with my XT4

Also as fantastic camera - I just prefer the x trans 1 & 2 for the more filmic look.

Pay less for body but get the best glass available. Ain't that counter productive?
