    Getting an expensive model to be a better VTuber is like getting an expensive racket to be better at tennis. It's just bad advice.

    • @HyattHyatt3179
      @HyattHyatt3179 Месяц назад +10

      This is a way too good analogy. Since if you have a broken racket/ a horrible model then you won't really hit any balls/ get any viewers, but if you have a working racket/ a bare minimum model then it's up to how good you are.
      Also most vtuber models won't be worth 1000 Euro. I don't mean to deny what artists do (and it's not because the quality is bad), but the truth is that only a few artists and riggers models are worth that much, and if you're in a spot where you can commission those few artists you'll probably have the money.

      I think a better comparison would be a music instrument, since you wouldn't check out a tennis player just because of their racket tho. Vtuber models _are_ a hook for a lot of people, they just don't guarantee viewer retention by themselves. Same for a music instrument, if it's an uncommon one or it sounds different from others, people might listen to you for a while, but they will only stay if you're actually good at playing it.

      I think is a bad analogy… I play ping pong and the difference on skill when I play with an expensive racket is so abysmal that I cannot compete without it 😂😂😂 However, there may be a ultra talented kid that can play better than me with chopsticks, yeah that is possible

    I think people forgot that there literally content creators that thrived without showing their face, and they don't even have a vtuber model (I think this generally predates vtubing), and that worked 'coz at the end of the day, it is the content that sells, the actual product. The model is just the packaging. In a business, the product is the one that had the most investment in, not the packaging. Good video~

    My VTuber career was entirely built on bad advice and I regret it, but try to live with my decisions anyways.
    When I first became interested and discussed with the community whether or not to become a VTuber, I explained that I'm very shy and quiet. But VTuber discussion groups convinced me that "shy and quiet" would be a unique VTuber concept so I decided to give it a shot.
    Turns out no one wants to listen to someone who hardly talks.
    Im a well known game modder in some circles and people asked me to stream how I create mods.
    So I did. They got bored watching me code and left within 5 minutes.

      Do you have teaching experience?
      Even though that is your personality, there are ways to make up for it. You could have AI voiceovers in your videos and explain well what you're doing.
      You could try focusing on helping people with clear, simple instructions to help them learn how to mod.
      Even though you think it's because you're quiet, it may have also been other factors. It may have been your titles, a lack of tags for people to find your vids, a lack of explanations, the visuals, and/or something else. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe even your own purpose behind the video may have been different.
      Since your specialty is quite niche, I think it'd be successful. It's NOT based entirely on your personality. Helping people can bring in great success even if it's a small, particular crowd you draw in. You could end up being a respected figure in your community even if it's only 1,000 ppl who are loyal to you 🤷‍♀️ If you incorporate other ideas into your channel for content, then you can stretch the boundaries of your channel (although you may upset the students of your game modding learning content 🤷‍♀️).
      In due time, you'd learn whether or not you have small or big crowds.

    Having a fully custom model is also not as important as people think!! At least, not when you start. I just paid $35 to get a premade model custom colored. It's also only a half-body, which is really fine I just adjusted my overlays slightly. It's far higher quality than something I could get for a couple hundred dollars because it's made to be sold multiple times. Take advice from the fleshtubers, your camera quality is your lowest priority. Get a good mic (not a $400 mic, just a good quality one. Mine's $35), learn how entertainment works, and do whatever is in your price range for your model. You can always upgrade.
    I've changed my mind a lot over the past year of streaming, so I appreciate the reminder that it takes time to figure yourself out. I feel sometimes like I'm exhausting my (small) audience with all the changes, but it's better than quitting because I'm not happy, right?

    I'm happy to see you addressing this issue, Mari.
    I see it everywhere. People who spend hundreds or even thousands on art and models when in reality they can spend a fraction (or even NOTHING) on a premade or customizable model and when they don't see the return they expect, they tend to get upset and quit. Even when commissioning a model they'll get tons of toggles/expressions and then never (or will seldom) use them. What's the point in spending so much when nobody will ever see the "bells and whistles" after the debut?
    The most important things are the content and overall vibe/branding. I say this as someone who is building a startup IRL and hasn't worked a "real job" since 2019. Money will only enhance what you have. It won't make up for what you don't have. 🦆

    I FEEL THIS ALL SO HARD!! I was so easily influenced by the prospect of having a nice model, or nice art to grow (granted i had health issues that inhibited my judgement-)
    Now that I have healed through my health issues, I have SO much clarity on the content I want to create, I have a plan, and it really is the sunk cost fallacy sometimes. You have to just create content, learn what you want to to create, how to do it, etc! Its a hard thing to figure out sometimes!
    You really don't need a lot of money, and god I wish I could go back and shake myself and tell myself to slow down and trust in my ability more rather than thinking it would be so beneficial to get all these things and follow the crowd. The reason a lot of content creators blow up is because theyre is something unique about them, not just their model or art.
    I really feel you at 10:30...I wish I put a lot more time and energy and thought into what I wanted to make, and portray. Everything feels like such a rush to catch up sometimes that we forget to slow down and think about truly what we want. I plan on starting with a new concept soon, something I have taken my time on to think about, and what to portray..and although in a sense it is a rebrand (and people dont like change, which makes it rough) it is nice knowing I have more confidence than I ever have before in the direction I'm going after I took time to disconnect and really think about what I want

    • @MariYumeCh
      @MariYumeCh  Месяц назад +3

      it's really hard to see what you have especially if you got people around you who have the things you want, but the best advice ive been given on that is to make little reminders of the things you do have and appreciate it. that way on bad brain days you can go back and see all the nice things youve acheived over the time spent making content.

    Nice vid Mari!
    I agree that it's always good to start with free or inexpensive premade models, or even PNG!
    I'm glad that I started streaming as a PNGtuber because even though that OC has been my online appearance for 4 years before I even started streaming, I felt quite awkward and disconnected when streaming with it.
    Due to this reason, I was determined to take my time on searching the VTuber artist that I really like, and designing a VTuber model that I feel comfortable and connected.

    One thing I want to note for people wanting a 'fancy' model, it might worth looking into some of the VRChat community. For context from time to time I stream for fun and I use a model I dance in VRChat with. The original model was free from the creator's discord and I may have spent around $50 for various booth accessories and clothes for her (and at the time it was just for VRChat). But I took that model and converted it over to a VSeeFace model (which is a VRM model but can support some extra fun stuff like shaders through unity its self). But after you learn the technical side of this, you can trial out different looks, models, styles and see what works. So I personally have a catalog of models that I can trial and bounce around through this.
    My only word of warning with this route is to don't fall into the trap even big names like Fillian falls into. If you grow attached to a model and want to use it more seriously, contact the creator and work out the rights and permissions for it. Most will have the FAQ or sheet to go over this and you have to respect it. For context Fillian uses a booth model by an artist named Jingo and when they did a run for physical goods they received a legal notice because in the usage notes they had to contact the licensor first. Honestly even with my VRChat work I tend to make excel sheets to keep a record of various usages rights along with links to their store and artist names so I can find them later.

    I think that Vtubers especially new ones are the most influenced by the "fake it until you make it" way of thinking. I have seen a wide variety of small sub 5k follower indie Vtubers feel the need to hire and editors and thumbnail artists for every video they make and it just ends up with their channel being dead since they can only afford to post one or two videos a month. I saw an interview where this Vtuber stated they pay an editor over 100 dollars a video, so curious I checked it out and saw it had 2k views and was essentially a cut down version of one of their stream segments with some meme edit. I'm happy the editor got paid well, but no wonder they could only post once every couple of weeks they are literally are in the negative every time they post.

That idea terrifies me. I would much rather take my time and grow my audience slowly. That way I can learn the do's and don'ts as I go with a smaller audience. Actually learn what I want to do to make this fun, while having everything be more manageable.

    Always good to see another Mari Video 😊 I really liked this one. It's a strong sentiment that I definitely agree with. While money can solve problems, it can't solve everything. It's really more important to find the thing you enjoy and stick to it. As they say it's takes 10 years minimum to become a master at craft, and that's only if you work incredibly hard everyday. To anyone who needs some extra encouragement, keep hanging in there. 1 years too short for anything, but who knows what the future holds.

    I’m in the process of mine being done, and I did pay quite a bit of money. Yes I do want to do well, but I really want a nice model and rig because it’s cool😆 I’ve always wanted one since I saw ai Chan, I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!! I plan on practicing off camera for a bit bc I know myself I’m too shy to start right when things are done. I plan on building things gradually until I’m ready. So yes I agree with everything about buying a premade model and practicing and building your skills like that, but in my case I don’t mind paying a bunch of money, I see it as a hobby and an art. At the end of the day it’s a art commission🩵 and it’s not like I’m paying a bunch of money at once. At least in my case, my art isn’t even done, and it’s been 4 months, I paid 4 months ago. I’ve seen another “vtuber” doing the same thing she has everything to stream or do content if she wanted to, but she’s “not ready” since she’s not comfortable yet, and just keeps commissioning art, and lots of people are waiting for her debut! everyone has their own reasons to do things, and in my case, I didn’t get any advice to spend a bunch of money on a model, I just thought it’d be a cool hobby and art to have✨

    Having a VTuber model is just anime puppetry
    Like, instead of taking influence from other VTubers people should look at Sesame Street and the Muppets tbh
    The culture around VTubing makes people think it's so different and aspirational but it's an excuse to hang out with people and play games lol
    and I LIKE VTubers
    but the culture just needs to redirect at this point
    It's not about the commissions or the drama or anyone else, you should just use it as an excuse to meet people, polish your skills, and improve your life idk
    But that's an issue with the Internet creator industry as a whole
    (also the "you" in this case is the vague idea of an audience reading this, not Mari specifically)

    • @HyattHyatt3179
      @HyattHyatt3179 Месяц назад

      I don't really agree with this. In my mind vtubing is still quite connected to the idol industry, and indie vtubers are sort of the same as underground or solo idol acts who have a lower budget, but will work just as hard.
      I don't think it's really the same as messing around and doing sketches with a puppet, even if there are some vtubers who do lean more that way.
      I don't think the problem lies with vtuber culture, and honestly I quite like it having some type of idol feel to it (Holo, V4Mirai etc ), including the goofy or clumsy idol type (Phase connect, Idol En, etc) but that's just my personal opinion.
      I don't really understand why vtubing should be used for the sake of networking, further your career, or how it could make your life better? I think all of those things should be up to the individual creator, and not some sort of general goal or standard for vtubers. The ones who want to meet other creators typically do, and your skills will keep getting better if you work hard, no matter if you do vtubing or not.
      I do agree that content creation, and internet's obsession with blowing drama out of proportion is an issue. But I don't see why that means that vtuber culture in general needs to change. And if you're not onboard with Holo's more idol leaning direction, then there's always other corpo's or indies with a very different culture in their communities. Which to me is part of the charm with the medium. So many people can do so many amazing different things with it.

      @@HyattHyatt3179 I appreciate the good faith discussion so I will ask this
      What do you think that VTubers generally aim for in terms of their goals and aspirations?

    • @HyattHyatt3179
      @HyattHyatt3179 Месяц назад

      @@MapleMilk Honestly I think it depends. Some people aim to get into big agencies so that they can preform on big stages and write their music.
      Some vtubers seem to just want a space to rant about and discuss their niche interests and thoughts.
      Others seem to just like to goof off and have people to chat with and friends in a company or circle.
      Of course there are people who are in it for money, or in general want it as a stable-ish job as well.
      This is why I'm not entirely sure why it needs to change directions. Other than to combat the genuine issues with bad companies, scams and harassment campaigns.
      Personally I just don't want the core elements of vtubing to change too much or to have a (in lack of better words) quality drop. I don't mean in terms of model, but more about the dedication to content creation or at least will to make something.
      If it became more like the Muppets and less like Idols I'm a bit worried that vtweeters would have it easier to create bigger dramas and issues if they lower the bar. Or that we'd have more children wanting to join in. (Sort of how a lot of kids became Minecraft youtubers back when that was big).

      @@HyattHyatt3179 Okay, now I get you
      Yeah, my whole point of comparison was to shift the focus from being inspired EXCLUSIVELY by other VTubers to being inspired by everything
      I think you misunderstood the direction I was kinda doing
      I don't actually mean that VTubers have to stop being idols or Japanese inspired
      I mean that VTubers have to stop acting insular and catty
      and not that they literally have to appeal to the same audience as puppets but just see themselves as people in the art of controlling a character
      So view it like this
      How are music genres made?
      They're a combination of various elements of different music the author likes until alot of people get inspired by them
      VTubing is like that but they're only inspired by people who do a single thing and act a single way
      This makes people who want to be different scared to do so because of not following "tradition"
      Honestly, idol culture itself has EXTREMELY strict rules and awful working conditions that I don't recommend anyone hold themselves up to
      But again, everyone's journey on this earth is different, so I think the jist I was going at was that people should go after what they want to instead of following what they see
      and do what inspires them instead of doing what they think will get them popular
      basically the same thing everyone else says but in a different way
      not specifically that people should ONLY do it for fun and ONLY be a crazy wacky model or ONLY use non japanese names or anything like that lol

      @@MapleMilk Then I agree with you. I've just been in way too many vtuber debates lately where shifting focus seems to mean to completely remake everything that vtubing currently is.
      I do agree that people should make new content that they actually feel inspired and want to make, and not just play game of the month and do karaoke streams since that's what the big ones does.
      If anything the big indies (at least that I watch) have made some sort of original thing, be it their brand of humor, the games they play, or the type of content. Which is what makes them stand out. As a watcher you can kind of tell which ones are forcing content and which are actually enjoying it.

    Another thing that a lot of these Vtubers need to understand that making these models takes TIME to get into a good quality, doesn't always mean expenstive. If they're asking their artist(s) to give them more stuff every month.... that's going to wear on the artist as well and thus the quality goes down as well because they have *other* orders to fill on top of that. So going for the most expensive for, Every. Single. Little. Thing, is going to cause burn out for even the artist. Good quality needs time as well.
    I'm making my own PNG model that have a swishing tail, my own layouts, my own twitch lables, my own assets, panels, badges, and even I tried to make my own stinger but I want to fix that because omg it looks so choppy but at least I figured out how the hell to make it work.... ish. But that's a whole other bag of worms. Do I sometimes want to just give my design to someone to make into a model? Oh hell yeah, because sometimes my energy levels are just out and gone. but I'm not going to learn anything if I just keep doing that, and I have a far bigger apperciation for those who do these things for a living because it's hard work. And I totally understand the burn out if they are forced to make a new version or a new toggle, or a new outfit every single month because that still takes time and energy. Even making assets and layouts takes time. (I took a good hour fixing up my TTRPG layout for the affiliate anniveristy and that's without boarders besides for myself being Judge, which I made a whole boarder for that specificly. and don't get me started how long the new bg for that layout took.) So yeah, I agree that you invest for better quality, not most expensive. You can find really good quality stuff on Kofi or etsy and work your way up over time as you build an audiance. If you can make your own stuff... do it. Because you'll just be so much prouder of yourself and what you've achived that I think it would also boost confidence. A friend of mine who isn't a vtuber created a whole layout for her art streams on Canva because she learned how to do graphic design and used that knowlage to help her build what she personally needed. You can make the free version work for you as long as you take the time to learn and understand how layout works and what works for your brand.

    From one Furry to another who both took a long time in soul-searching for that special thing that they really want to do, I really appreciate your advice. I think it is really sad that your channel’s lack of growth doesn’t match up with the amount of time, money, and effort that you have put into your VTubing career, but your perseverance is inspirational. I am a lot like you where I don’t really want to live stream, but I do like the aesthetics of Anime so making a hefty investment at the very start does seem worth it to me as someone who does have a strong interest in making video essays. At the very least - even if I still go with my initial plan of an expensive VTuber Model for my debut as a video essayist, my takeaway from your video is that it is SO important to have a plan - like life-or-death important.

    I made my own vtuber model and I'm very proud of her. It took time, a lot of love, and tears lol to make her. I do gaming videos, so it is easier to just slap her in the corner, since the main focus is the game. I also did a TON of research generally and found that it really depends on your personality more than the content or your model. I'm growing slowly, but I feel confident that my content and being able to speak throughout my gameplay - while being entertaining is good (:
    At the end of the day, we can only do our best with what we have :D!

    Always enjoying hearing your insight on things Mari. I agree that you can start pretty cheap and theoretically you could start with 0 dollars invested.
    In my experience, I made everything myself from backgrounds/overlays/pngtuber model/etc. I am a new artist so nothing too crazy. I made most of it through Canva plus they have free overlays to use (credit). I created my own because I wanted to try out the vibe I wanted the stream to have. I only invested in a microphone early because well I needed it for other things. Sure I could upgrade my laptop to something stronger but, I am enjoying the challenge of using what I have on hand rather than investing quickly.
    I think people don't realize how much free resources there are to starting (please always credit though people). It's a great way to start out to see whether you like streaming or the very least enjoy content creation. I know of some people who just like script making or wanted to transition to just making art. The options are pretty much endless where it could do becoming a png/vtuber. Then, I feel you have a better understanding what to commission or upgrade.
    Thank you for making these videos! Anyone interested in content creation, I say go for it man.

    I remember Shylily making a similar point. It's not so much about the model as it is HOW you use your model's capabilities and your personality. I mean, I do vtubing on TikTok as a hobby and I use Reality for goodness sake. But people like it and I'm very slowly building a following. So yeah. Don't sweat the expensive model and focus on your presentation. 😄

    Currently I make videos only for myself to watch (not publishing them. Also, possibility vtubing as hobby) because I feel calmer being by myself rather during stream, when someone can join and make me stressed.
    But I guess it is healthy approach to accept streaming with potential audience or not, but after I'm over my "just spam bad meme for fun" phase. Also I practice female voice (xd); among tens of different things (learning stuff for future), so, recording myself is not the main focus for me currently.

    I can definitely appreciate this topic. I've just recently decided to try jumping into content creation and I was close to driving myself crazy with " Oh I need to make a whole new model, I need a new background for videos" and etc etc. Thankfully my boyfriend had a lot more sense and suggested I just use the models and assets I have there already made and just slowly work on new stuff. Which is what I've done and I am forever grateful he told me that if not I wouldn't be trying to make content rn.

    It's a question of return on investment and risk vs. reward but, in the long run, I think the people who think they need an expensive or excellent model to get more views or more money is just a pipe dream on their part. Wanting to have them is one thing, needing is another.

    Needing an expensive model is so wrong. You can also go with a cheap doodle of as an avatar, it depends on how much the user can get out of it imo.
    A friend and me wanna start as twin VTubers. She will draw the stuff and I will rig it. For that we watched many videos and are planning everything for a few months now. So with a little bit of luck/having friends with the right talent and perseverance a model can even be for free.

    Something I always wanna say to newer vtubers is take that money you wanna spend on an expensive model and instead put it into your setup, if you have a decent set up then spend that money on the type of content you want to create, spend money for singing or instrument lessons, spend money for video game coaching. There are so many better things to spend that money on that'll get you much further than a great looking model.

    Dyarikku opened one commission slot. It's £11,000 GBP ($14,146 USD/19,597 CAD/21,604 AUD as of the date of the post.) Yes high-quality != Expensive. Most vtubers with nice looking models, paid less than $2000 USD and many are still using them 3 years later.
    Vtuber models are not cars or housing, paying more money doesn't automatically make it better. 90% of emotional impact is through the eyes and voice. That is where the design should be focused.

    I think this should've been modified to don't get expensive rigging/toggles as that seems to be the overall point of the video as that is honestly the most expensive part of models that people blow a crap ton of money on that they may use once every 20 streams/vids, heck I know of some pretty big vtuber's that even forget they have certain toggles. I will say if your gonna spend money the price for the actual art itself should be the main factor for newcomers not in how it moves case in point Sinder she was for the longest time a PNG-tuber before getting her 1.0 model

  • @WandererEris
    @WandererEris Месяц назад +2

    You mention Hololive models not have the Z-axis properly rigged, but honestly, most VTubers go WAY overboard with it and it ends up looking ridiculous when they're constantly shrinking and growing as they move. I don't mind when it's a little, but it's distracting when it's a lot and I'd rather they take the Hololive way than dial it up so high.

  • @79bigcat

    You don't give a kid who just got his license a new Ferrari. Even if a model is a little clunky, the important part is the practice, learning to navigate your road; I'm really stretching the metaphor here. Plenty of people can stream with just Voice over, the model gives easier branding and a means to emphasize your reactions(exaggerating a little, as the cartoon character you're trying to be). You start with "good enough;" you can always upgrade later once you've got your footing.

    I think a model generally doesn’t matter like you said since we did see the rise of say like Pikamee and Ironmouse who both started out with relatively cheap models especially in the case of Mousey. However, a good model isn’t a downside either, it is worth the investment if you can manage your resource properly.
    Not to be mean, but a model is like a thumbnail. You only click on interesting titles and thumbnails, right? So you’ll be more likely to check out a vtuber who has an interesting model rather than a bland one. So I’m not afraid to say that when I look for someone to watch, I first and foremost, look for a good model.

    Why not just learn how to make your own Vtuber model and rig it? Have we thought of that? You dont need to buy a bunch of expensive models, if you can just make them yourself. If anything youll make money. If people can do it, you can learn how to do it too. Itll take effort, and time, but once you got it, youre set for your vtuber career. Make whatever new model you want, get crazy.
    For some reason, artists really dont like it when other people learn to draw and make art. You can teach yourself. Were all capable of learning. Youll be glad you did it.

    • @piplupcola
      @piplupcola Месяц назад

      Theres a reason why vtuber models are god damm expensive. Because theyre really difficult to make. Not impossible, but if you're just a normal person who doesnt know how to draw, your idea of "just design one and rig it yourself!" Is the same as "Wanna go to japan? Just build a plane and fly there yourself!" Art takes years to master, and so does rigging. If getting a model to allow said person to start vtubing as early as they can so that they can learn whether they even like the idea of streaming then why make one from scratch when there are so many free options out there?

    • @Nightmare-wo2gd
      @Nightmare-wo2gd Месяц назад

      @@piplupcola you see, as an artist, "normal" people CAN learn to draw. It does take a while, but anybody can do it with practice, rigging takes a while too, but plenty of VTubers make their own models, outfits, etc and they look great, and they're self taught. Comparing learning art and code to building a plane is frankly laughable. Anybody can learn how to draw, and anybody can learn how to code. All you gotta do is start learning. This idea that only artistic people can make art, and everybody else can't is ridiculous.

    When you mentioned the Z axis, that made me realize what exactly I had an issue with, what I felt was so wrong looking, about a lot of Hololive's Vtubers, especially the guys, as well as many indi guys...the Z axis is what's missing.
    That also gave me an idea for you to make content about. Could you dedicate a video just explaining the ins & outs of what goes into getting a Vtuber model made, including explaining the 3 axis, with examples of what it looks like when a model does & doesn't use them, as well as programs available for model making & streaming (possibly ranked from easiest or cheapest to get/use, to highest quality), & then what you'd recommend for hardware, too?
