I did an internship to get my foot in the door. I was hired on as a contract coder and just under 1 year later I was hired on directly by the hospital. I’ve been here over 10 years now. Wouldn’t change anything.
Thank you Victoria!!!! I have been following you since failing my 1st attempt at CPC Exam. I was listened and studied the tricks/tutorials you gave. March 19, 2022 I PASSED my CPC Certification Exam with ease & confidence.
This is what I love about this woman. Not only does she continue to provide content to those aspiring to become coders, but she; continually supplies new info on pertinent topics affecting those of us newly credentialed coders. #KEEP ON CODING ON VICTORIA!
Its very true about having to start at the bottom. It really surprises me that ppl don't know that in any job, you have to start somewhere. I'm going to go through it in the future. I'm completely changing my career in Quality Food Manufacturing of 18 years exp, to Medical Coding. I know I will have to restart at the bottom. But for me, to get out of manufacturing, its worth it.
I lost my job in March 2023. A friend told me about medical coding and AAPC. I won a full ride scholarship from AAPC for my CPC course in April 2023. I completed it, and passed my certification exam in March 2024. I completed Practicode in July, and am a fully certified CPC. I have been searching for an entry level coding position ever since. It's so discouraging, because I have no healthcare industry experience. I just want to be a coder.
I love all the advice you've been offering, Victoria! Thanks to you, I expanded my job searches to include Charge Entry, as you'd mentioned that this was your first role. I just landed an interview for next week at one of the major health systems in town for a Charge Entry Specialist position! Hopefully you won't mind my referring to you as "my coding mentor/guru on RUclips!" :)
This is great advice! I started as a registrar with a large hospital network years ago then did charge entry now medical claims scrubbing. I went back to school for coding and am finishing my program next month! I am so glad I stayed with the company now that I am finally ready to obtain a position as a coder because I have contacts and my foot in the door. Hard work and patience pay off!!
The timing of this video is spot on! I actually have an interview this afternoon. Right now it is for a Coding position that is PRN and it’s uncertified. I’ll say I do have a bit of an advantage because I currently work at the hospital that this position is for but in a different dept. I also know the manager who set up the interview as well as the director of the dept. But I don’t want that to distract me thinking that getting the job is a easy hire. With only 8-9 weeks left of school hopefully I will be able to land this position and be ready to go.

Hi Victoria! Thank you again so much! I’ve comment recently similar from one of your recent videos… this helps absolutely so much too! By far you are the best Victoria RUclips for medical billing and coding! You are my go to highly recommended RUclipsr on Medical Billing and Coding! Hopefully to see another video update with HRs not only one but two be nice because then we can see maybe 🤔 see both sides or something may help us future or already are there to not give up and know what it is and more for networking and resources or tips too for update on resumes or cover letter or how or what’s new expected for 2022. Thank you sooooo much Victoria! Absolutely blessed, gratefully, and extremely fortunate for you being you in the professionalism of Medical Billing and Coding and as a whole individual.🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌❤️😇😊
Thank you for this! I’m having a hard time finding a coding job. I just got my CPC-A certification in December. I had hoped my education and other skills would help but nope. I have HR, MBA, and medical training (MLT). I actually started in pre-nursing 20 years ago. I’ve done so many different things, including Quality Assurance. I had hoped to work toward becoming a Medical Auditor. Now I’m even looking into a HIM degree. I’m just at a loss. I’ve put in several job applications with no interviews, a few rejections, and some haven’t contacted at all. I really don’t know what else to do. I was hoping to work from a home office.
Keep going don’t give up, throw in your resume even if it says experience needed. My last two jobs were by people who just simply took a chance on me with no experience in the midst of so many who did. Your time will come
I feel like you're talking about me 😢.. I have BSc in genetical science, now I am doing my MBA Healthcare management but honestly I want an office job like coding, so I am thinking to take the certificate later.. Do you advice me to take it? , considering that I am 31 years old with no experience in coding
When I got the notification that you posted this video I Iiterally jumped and looked out my window! 👀👀 I had been up all night looking for coding jobs with no experience! I have worked in the healthcare industry since 2011. I’ve done health insurance, worked in ED as a financial counselor, pt access registrar adding pt charts and their insurance verification , interacting w pts on their hipaa compliance, and I’ve done prior authorizations with cpt, icd 10 cm and hcpcs. I have two associates degrees and a bachelors degree in ESS with a concentration in pre rehab, so I’m just like… I’ve got most of it down but I’m doing self study which is so much easier for me considering the amount of student debt I owe! I can’t wait to see where this takes me. I wanna take my cpc this fall wish me luck!
landed a job in billing and not happy in this part of revenue cycle. So continue to work toward my certification in coding and in search of entry level coding job.
Fingers cross not going to jinx myself but may have something coming up soon. Till then still at current job sucking up knowledge. Question why do offices insist they don't need coders? Half the problems we deal with would not be issue if they had coders in our office. Denials and insurance companies taking back payments is this common?
Hi Victoria, I just finished OS2’s HCC Basic course for RA coding and am about to start their Mock Project apprenticeship. Without experience and a CCA it seemed like I would only be able to find a coding-adjacent position. The teachers and the course are amazing. Thank you for mentioning them in your recommendation.
I've seen them advertise for that and considered trying them. Was skeptical to pay for courses without a guarantee to get the apprenticeship afterwards. Can you please share your experience with OS2 . Do you think the experience through the paid programs would be enough experience to be hired by someone else in the event you're not hired by them?
Hello, I have taken medical billing coding course online which cause me major debt and was never able to get a job in the field. Right now, I'm working in manufacturing and ready to leave and get back to leaving medical billing and coding again. I really like your video's which they are very informative.
So glad you posted this, I am two classes away from graduating with my degree. I am terrified of trying to find a job, when I have had no experience, and I have been a stay at home mom for 11+ years :( I feel like I have nothing to put on a resume.
Thanks Victoria. I learned a lot from you. I am yet to learn more, I am currently enrolled to an an online course for Medical Coding and Billing and it's because you inspired me.
Hi Ms. Moll ~ Happy Easter Weekend! Just watched your informative, encouraging and helpful April 14th Video about Medical Coding being worthwhile. Thank-you! I am loving the new hair! Although I know that has nothing to do with this subject!
To get a coder job, at least in my experience it is to know someone in the field. No other way to get in without being unemployed at least six months. I had 28 years of pharmacy experience that came with pharmacology, problem solving, Medi-cal, Medicare all payers.
I have recently retired after a long career in law enforcement in the US. I am looking towards a remote medical billing/coding career as my next chapter. My goal is to eventually work remotely overseas (Thailand). From what I have seen, it appears entry level positions are extremely hard to come by. As for salary, I am not looking for much....looking for experience and some extra income. Are my goals unrealistic? How difficult is it to get a entry-level career? I have seen so many people say the job search has been next to impossible.. Thank you.
I was able to land my very first coding job a couple of years ago with a local hospital with no coding experience solely based on my very strong medical transcription background of nearly 20 years. At the time I was hired, I had just passed the CPC exam and was newly certified, but I had never worked as a coder a day in my life. However, the hospital was willing to overlook that because I had been working full-time as a medical transcriptionist for almost two decades and had outstanding medical terminology and anatomy/physiology knowledge. I was an apprentice coder for my first year, but I "graduated" from apprentice status after I had completed my first 12 months on the job. It is entirely possible to land a coding job with no experience!
@@sarahmaragni6779 Not exactly. Yes, it helps that I have an extremely high level of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology knowledge and it did probably make it easier for me to land my first coding job, but coding is an ENTIRELY different animal than transcription.
I just found your channel, new subscriber here. I am a Registered Dental Assistant for 20 years now, thinking of changing careers and getting a lot of information from this channel so any feed back is appreciated! thinking on this career to close my working cycle, I am 56 and want to work from home...as you said on this episode, I want to start my classes after I get all the information and feed back I need, I am planning to start on January 2024 with my classes, and little by little start as part time on the evenings and weekends while I can maintain my full time job. Do you need a different certification or license if you move to another state>? I move from California to Texas and I had to renew my license ...I will definitely register to your masterclass to start my journey for the next final cycle of my professional life. Thanks for everything you do!!
Hi, great info. Can you let us know the names of any companies that will hire you and train you as a coder, or companies you can do an internship with so that you can get the experience? Thanks.
Congrats!! I just graduated from my coding course and am feeling a bit lost. Is there a way to sign up to take the cpc exam and are there practice exams?
@@brendamondragon6594 I used the AAPC Study Guide, and I watched a lot of RUclips videos… mainly these and Mr. Hoang…. It really helped with understanding…. You got this!
Hello Victoria, Thank you for helping every step. I will be joining the local chapter for the first time this month taking your advice. I was deciding between codify and Find a code software, while doing the Practicode by AAFP to take out that A from CPC A. Can you please recommend, which one is better?
I am curious to know if you find age as a hindrance to some companies? I am currently 55 years old and have been a registered respiratory therapist for 35 years. I took the AACP CPC and CRC courses and passed both the courses and the certifications in one sitting. Coding experience I lack but the understanding of the code meanings have been easy. Any suggestions on how to switch these 2 careers at my age?
I’m 50 an changing careers as well. I’m currently in the insurance call center business. I’m burned out and have heard a lot of positive things about coding. I would also like additional tips on us older people changing careers.
Excellent content. I took a follow-up claims in the Billing department and I sometimes have to review Dx codes and pull from the documentation that has what LCD requires for Equipment items that require specific type of diagnoses. For example, I switched I50.9, heart failure, unspecified from the first line to the second and replaced a respiratory dx that was on the second line to the first line because the equipment is a respiratory item. Anyways, great job!
I’ve worked with two different hospital networks before, during and directly after Covid. The only reasons I left was due to post covid layoffs and staff cuts. I have experience in HCSPCS and CPT codes since I was a claims processor at one job and I worked medical reception at another doing patient check ins. On top of my previous work for a Medicare advantage plan company as a CSR and claims adjuster (all of these positions together total to about 5 years of work) would that be enough “experience” for most places or would they still want me working directly in the billing and coding position for that?
Hey there I LOVE your content and your tips are so helpful! When I went to check on your courses offered I was bummed because it said the page is down due to upgrading the courses page, is there an ETA on maybe when it'll be back up? I don't know how long it's been down for or anything either I was just curious! Thank you!
@@brendamondragon6594 don’t be terrified I think it sounds scarier but it really isn’t. It’ll start off with 4-5 anatomy questions and medical terms and some guidelines and the rest goes by section and it’s 10 questions of each. The test is just like the practice quizzes they give and the last part is coding cases. Jot down what is bundled and double check what not to code
I got so much from this video. Is it possible to do a full video on other types of jobs than the average coding jobs to get the experience like the charge specialist. I would love to see that!! Please and thank you.
Hi Victoria and everyone here. I just want to share this. I have my medical coding certificate already but they advised me to take my CCS license exam so that I will be certified as a medical coder and find a job easily. The thing is I failed my exam twice already:( and some folks told me It is better to have an experience first before taking the exam. But Now, I have scheduled an exam again on May. Any thoughts ???
Hello. I noticed your page is titled coder? I haven't been on here long but I first saw your video on the difference between coding and billing. DO you mostly work with coding? Because I was convinced the job field was more so looking for billers than coders, but I am wayyyyy more interested in just coding. (This school I saw has both medical billing and coding and just coding) Am I wrong on this assumption?
I recently landed my dream job, but there’s a product you recommended in one of your videos that I can’t seem to find. Can you drop a link to the portable crate thing with wheels and a handle you recommended to carry all your coding books?
Do you think that 5 years as a nurse (LPN and RN), 10 years as a part time Massage Therapist, and 10+ years in IT are good skills that would appeal to employers to a CPC graduate with no coding experience?
Absolutely, your diverse background in nursing, massage therapy, and IT can make you an appealing candidate for a CPC position, even without direct coding experience. Your understanding of clinical care and IT systems would likely be considered major assets. Employers often look for candidates who bring a well-rounded skill set, and you certainly have that. Best of luck on your coding journey! 🌟
AAPC shouldnt be scam these poor people into paying for this license. You can’t get a job afterwards and they don’t even care. It’s beyond disgusting how greedy they are.
I just got my cbcs what is that good for? I've applied to many many jobs so far and no calls back. I've had it for about a month and a half. And network is not for me. I have crippling social anxiety that's why I try to get this so I can work from home.
So happy to see this message. I'm in my 60s also and was beginning to feel a bit down on this 'adventure'. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy doing this and have been studying for a while, hopefully will take exam end of year. Anything you can share with your study period. I am also a starter and found this video very helpful.. All the Best.
Excellent information here, thanks! I took classes and then we worked on 3m for most of the last year in school. We took our final and part of it was using 3m. Does that count as 3m experience? Or how would you word that on a resume? Thanks again I appreciate all the information! I’ll look at your courses too! I’d love a free laptop ✌️👍🙌🥰

Hey im Jose and been thinking on studyng medical coding and billing career as a male would you recommend this? Since this is more of a female field. Also ive noticed that sometimes they need people that speak spanish in this position to tell the clients if they got approved or not with their insurance things like that

Your website for your class will not open. Error message states website is harmful not sure why. I'm very interested in your class. I am Certified Medical Coding & Billings, study for the exam as we speak, what do you suggest for job searches with my Certificate?
When it comes to choosing a laptop for medical coding, there are a few key features to consider: Processing power: Medical coding software can be resource-intensive, so you'll want a laptop with a powerful processor. Look for at least an Intel Core i5 or i7, or an AMD Ryzen 5 or 7. Memory (RAM): Medical coding software can also be memory-hungry, so you'll want a laptop with at least 8GB of RAM. More is better if you can afford it. Storage: Medical coding files can take up a lot of space, so consider a laptop with a solid-state drive (SSD) instead of a traditional hard drive (HDD) for faster access to files. Display: A clear and bright display is important for reading small text and viewing images. Consider a laptop with a high-resolution display and good color accuracy. Portability: Depending on your needs, you may want a laptop that is lightweight and easy to carry around
I am very interested in doing billing and coding. For me, what's the best school? Should I do a certificate? Is there something with higher college level(im sure)? I need classes online(for my schdule)? Thank you!
Whatever you do, don’t get a HIM degree. For some reason, many people think you need a HIM degree to be a coder or biller and that’s SOOOOO not true. I had classmates that just wanted to do coding and I feel like they wasted so much time and money getting their HIM degree (and a HIM degree covers a lot more than just coding).

Working in a lab can provide some exposure to medical coding, as you may have had the opportunity to see codes related to the specimens you were accessioning. However, it is important to note that medical coding involves much more than such as as knowledge of coding guidelines and regulations. If you are interested in pursuing a career in medical coding, you may want to consider obtaining additional education and training, such as a medical coding certification program. This can help you develop a comprehensive understanding of the field and increase your job opportunities. Overall, while working in a lab can provide some basic exposure to medical coding and healthcare systems, it is not necessarily sufficient on its own to qualify you for a career in the field.

Do you advice me to take it? , considering that I am 31 years old with no experience in coding
Thanks!
Sounds like me I am a financial counselor in a hospital nyc
I am looking for a school for medical coding how is the self study going
landed a job in billing and not happy in this part of revenue cycle. So continue to work toward my certification in coding and in search of entry level coding job.
Good luck to you! Hope you are able to transfer or find a better suited position soon!
What do you have your degree in?
I feel the same way !
Thanks Victoria. I learned a lot from you. I am yet to learn more, I am currently enrolled to an an online course for Medical Coding and Billing and it's because you inspired me.
Valuable insight tips....."I'm glued to the screen"!
Hi Ms. Moll ~ Happy Easter Weekend! Just watched your informative, encouraging and helpful April 14th Video about Medical Coding being worthwhile. Thank-you! I am loving the new hair! Although I know that has nothing to do with this subject!
I am a LPN finishing my coding. I also have done prior authorization. Have you seen LPN coders having better opportunities?
Thank you.
Hi, can you get hired while finishing your medical/billing certificate? Or you have to wait until you get your certificate?
Transcription is experience
Thanks.
I would also love to know this, thanks for asking.
I passed my CPC Exam! Thank you for helping me grasp the concepts of coding!!
Hi can you please share where did you done your course I'll m from India please contact me
Hello Victoria, Thank you for helping every step. I will be joining the local chapter for the first time this month taking your advice. I was deciding between codify and Find a code software, while doing the Practicode by AAFP to take out that A from CPC A. Can you please recommend, which one is better?
Plzz tell me which certificates to get survive valuable for medical coding
I am curious to know if you find age as a hindrance to some companies? I am currently 55 years old and have been a registered respiratory therapist for 35 years. I took the AACP CPC and CRC courses and passed both the courses and the certifications in one sitting. Coding experience I lack but the understanding of the code meanings have been easy. Any suggestions on how to switch these 2 careers at my age?
I'm doing the same. 50 years old and have been a occupational therapy assistant for 25 years looking to transition to a medical coder :)
I’m 50 an changing careers as well. I’m currently in the insurance call center business. I’m burned out and have heard a lot of positive things about coding. I would also like additional tips on us older people changing careers.
Thank you Victoria. I have a certificate in Medical Coding and Billing, but I was unable to pass my CCS-P exam.
It’s so hard getting a job 😭 I’ve been trying for months without any success .
Thank you!
I just passed my exam!!! Your videos definitely helped me!!!
Hey! Congrats on passing your exam. I am terrified and am asking for help. How was the exam and what did it focus on?
@@brendamondragon6594 don’t be terrified I think it sounds scarier but it really isn’t. It’ll start off with 4-5 anatomy questions and medical terms and some guidelines and the rest goes by section and it’s 10 questions of each. The test is just like the practice quizzes they give and the last part is coding cases. Jot down what is bundled and double check what not to code
One of the best vids! Thank you
Hello Victoria
If you do not have a job should you still insure the expense for new books each year or what is your suggestion for buying books?
I got so much from this video. Is it possible to do a full video on other types of jobs than the average coding jobs to get the experience like the charge specialist. I would love to see that!! Please and thank you.
Hi Victoria and everyone here. I just want to share this. I have my medical coding certificate already but they advised me to take my CCS license exam so that I will be certified as a medical coder and find a job easily. The thing is I failed my exam twice already:( and some folks told me It is better to have an experience first before taking the exam. But Now, I have scheduled an exam again on May. Any thoughts ???
Cal regional program. Was going to sign up and take your class as well. What do you think?
Does anyone know if the program mentioned in the masterclass counts toward educational contact hours and if yes, how many?
So pharmacy tech experience is good? Also was a production manager.. very detailed oriented and anything my bosses want correctly is given to me.
How to work remote when you live rurally? What is the absolute minimum internet speed you need to have?
I just got my cbcs what is that good for? I've applied to many many jobs so far and no calls back. I've had it for about a month and a half. And network is not for me. I have crippling social anxiety that's why I try to get this so I can work from home.
Thank you very much Victoria. You are so kind hearted and more will benefit from your videos. God bless. I am a 65-year old starter
Wow
Excellent information here, thanks! I took classes and then we worked on 3m for most of the last year in school. We took our final and part of it was using 3m. Does that count as 3m experience? Or how would you word that on a resume? Thanks again
I appreciate all the information! I’ll look at your courses too! I’d love a free laptop ✌️👍🙌🥰
is the AAPC extern ship program good? I’m considering going with them, but I want to make sure that they have the extern ship.
Opportunities through the AAPC externship program are very limited, and experiences with externship sites can vary depending on the location and the participating organizations. I recommend checking out the AAPC Project Xtern page to learn more about what’s available in your area and what to expect.

I just took a position as Financial Integrity Analyst 1. I have done about 10 years of authorizations. Need to attain a certification within next 6 months. Which exam do you recomend?
I was wondering Victoria starting off as a new beginner is it better to work under a director or go on your own as contractor for CPC coding?
when i am looking for the diagnosis for an E/M under the assesment as the diagnosis...how is a increase in medicine for an increase in something physical to happen...how is it found in the book ...can a diagnosis be an increasein medications or is the diagnosis the increase that may have happened after the medication was increased
if that is not confusing enough sorry
❤ great advice and very helpful.
This was perfect. Thank you.
Hello looking for some advice . I currently dis like my job but I did take the medical billing and coding course along with medical Assistant from unilmate medical Academy back in 2015 . I have the certification but I don't have a degree in it. The job I have now I started over from being a child care director. I have all the certification for running a day care. Is it too late for me with getting into medical billing and coding .
I registered for the masterclass but it was not free? Did I miss something?
Currently in the AAPC CPC/CPB course. Looking to retire from the military in the next 18 months, so starting a new career. How do I get an internship in CPC?
I think that will help garner experience as a coder and possibly a job after.
Thank you
Internships are extremely hard to come by. The only resource the AAPC offers is project Xtern: www.aapc.com/medical-coding-jobs/project-xtern/
I wish I would of seen this or know of this before I was already so deep into loans with devry and feeling like i really am not getting much out of this program for the money have spent
Hey im Jose and been thinking on studyng medical coding and billing career as a male would you recommend this? Since this is more of a female field. Also ive noticed that sometimes they need people that speak spanish in this position to tell the clients if they got approved or not with their insurance things like that
Hey Jose! Absolutely, medical coding and billing is a great career choice for anyone, regardless of gender. Plus, being bilingual in Spanish is a fantastic asset in this field, as it can help bridge communication gaps with a diverse client base.
I wanted to get certified as COC. Is this Master class offer COC course?

I don't have any feedback to provide on Penn Foster, sorry.

Hello I would like to know what’s the best desk top or laptop computer to get for medical coding?
When it comes to choosing a laptop for medical coding, there are a few key features to consider:
Processing power: Medical coding software can be resource-intensive, so you'll want a laptop with a powerful processor.

Hi I m certified medical coder and I have jst 8 months of experience can I do work at country’s
I HAVE A QUESTION, DO YOU CODE DIAGNOSIS AND MODIFIERS ON PCS CODES
I work in a lab where I see codes when I’m accessioning specimen. Does working in a lab count as some form of experience?
