      Great Britain is such a quaint island in general. You could be down south by Lands End or up Jorth by John O' Groats and you'll find the same small villages, rueal roads, ancient castles and homes littered across the countryside. I reckon this may be a huge reaosn for conservatism in rural areas. A lot of the outright SNP or Labour areas here are well built up and secluded from the traditional countryside. Funnily some of Scotlands most reliable Conservative voting constituencies are those near the border that lack big cities and oush for things like the reopening of the borders railway and preservation of the old textile buildings from centuries gone by. More people need to return to the countrysides, they are far more manageable if competent leadership by area is anything to go by.

    I am not from the UK, but an Italian-American by proud ancestry and nationality. It has nonetheless long been clear to me that the self-sacrificing Christ-Inspired fight for human dignity and civility for the world as a whole has heroically cut its way through England and the British Isles over many centuries as through no other land on earth, drawing both awe to and derision upon its inhabitants and those affected by them as to Christ himself, Who had clearly set the Ultimate stage upon the Cross and off again for all people everywhere, sending Jerusalem straight to the UK and beyond. The first time I heard this song it produced an intensity of feeling in me of naturally appropriated familiarity that brought tears of joy to my eyes by its conviction to the most noble cause of The Savior, as it has ever since in my repeated hearings of this profound hymn.

    I think that the reason this is so great isn't just the music - it's the words. It's talking about how great England is, but also about how we need to keep building and bettering so that it becomes the New Jerusalem (Heaven) on earth. Not about conquest or fame or power, but making life better for everyone. And that's not only hopeful, that's inspiring and a great thing for England (and everywhere) to strive for.

    • @stevenbrrtt

      Isadora, thank you for your reply. BTW, it doesn't look like we'll ever ditch the habit of treating our minorities like dirt. Just catch some of the hot air, bile and bloviations emanating from the GOP convention to see what I mean. Admittedly, I'm biased as a Democrat. But I used to be an active Republican until one day when I saw how the real up n' comers saw what they would later publicly come out and snidely put down as the "little people." Disgusting. Maggie Thatcher, if she was alive now, would not recognize what's become of both my country and our (deservedly minority-by-numbers) party. It deserves to be swept out of office or at least this time given a through-cleansing of its worse members and tendencies. If you think Trump's out of bounds, take a look at one of our most notorious pro-WASP Congressmen, Steve King of Iowa. He's never met a pro-Kiplingesque bit o' nonsense enter his thick head that he couldn't say enough kind words for it. I l love my country dearly, but expressing that love sometimes means I've got to do so in a public forum like this so more people can see what's what become of my nation's two party system and good decent civic-minded politics. The GOP has tons of Bible totin' quotin' bangin' "christians" all ready to tell you Obama's even worse than a "radical Islamicist pro terrorst-loving Manchurian candidate president" . . . but not one of the loudest Pharisees interviewed recently in Cleveland, esp. by MSNBC's desk hosts can adequately point to any reliable Biblical scripture verse or section in our two thousand year Tradition, save for "Deus Vult Est" the blood curdling cry to round up Crusaders centuries ago.
      Even more puzzling is the "comparison" of the average Trump voter to the average pro-Brexit voter by American reporters and pundits. Two different kinds of campaigns for two decidedly different kinds of results sought. Amazing. Pray God gets through enough thickened skulls and hearts of some of our most bewilderingly hardened fellow citizens and subjects. People have to listen, though, using all God has given us to make the best with in order to achieve the most humane results for all.

I would defend Scotland like it was England because this island is our home whether you're English, Scottish or Welsh, we're all one people. I even see the Irish as part of our family 1) because i have Irish family members and 2) because they're part of our little group of islands, same with the smaller islands like the Isle of man. Funnily enough i actually find the Scottish accent attractive on a women. I probably have one of the worst English accents ....... Manc, its not as bad as Scouse though lol.

    • @InimitaPaul
      @InimitaPaul 8 лет назад +4

      Toma Hawk The nation barely knows the first verse of the current national anthem that lasts 1 minute and even that is chaos most of the time. Jerusalem is nearly 3 minutes long and not even remotely simple in wording, it would be utter chaos. Also, the majority of England aren't religious now, myself included. Why should I be forced to sing of God, never mind Satanic mills? Currently I'm asked to sing about a Queen, next God and Satan, wth!
      For some reason, singing of God's holy lamb and satanic mills doesn't inspire me. When was the last time Jerusalem was a place worthy of praise? Do we really want to sing of building a new one here? When I think of Jerusalem I think of the crusades (that's not a good thing btw) and today's current strife.
      Also, I doubt your average ill-educated Muslim will get the subtlety of the verse and certain clerics will try to use it as propaganda against us, every time it's sung.

    • @3ADWOLF
      @3ADWOLF 8 лет назад +21

      Enlgand may not be as religious anymore but if you hadn't noticed the first word of the current national anthem is 'God' so i doubt it will be too much of a change.
      The line you quoted represents a part of our history so it has meaning therefore should be inspiring.
      As for learning the words, it's just like anything, the more you do it the easier it gets and let's face it people know lyrics to all sorts of songs so if they had to learn this i doubt it would be too difficult.

    • @InimitaPaul
      @InimitaPaul 8 лет назад +5

      Toma Hawk You say the current national anthem has God in it, and yet people want rid of it. Half the national football team refuse to sing it, for whatever reason, I refuse to sing it and I wouldn't sing Jerusalem either.
      Why are we even considering using old songs anyway, we have the richest vein of song writers and musicians in the world in this country, why not have a competition for something completely new?
