  • We're all familiar with Windows Vista, and it's common knowledge that reception for it wasn't very positive, but how could an OS that had years of work behind it and plenty of new ideas fail?

    I remember my dad upgrading to Vista one morning without telling anyone.
    I lost my shit when I saw it because it looked so good, everything was shiny and round. For someone who was used to Win 95 and XP, this blew my mind!

      travos k Vista looked cool though this came at the cost of running slow on lower end hardware. Win7 struck a better balance and was improved under the hood so it could run better on low end computer without looking out of style they Windows XP was looking by then, Imo.

  • @JasonCoulls
    @JasonCoulls 6 лет назад +199

    There's one important point totally omitted from this video: The driver architecture changes. Windows drivers were originally designed to handle simple peripherals that did simple tasks (mice, keyboards, cameras, printers, etc). Next gen peripherals required next gen hardware driver architecture - which we still use today, but obviously, that broke compatibility with many existing hardware items and those manufacturers didn't have drivers ready when Vista came out.

    • @Elijah_Markin
      @Elijah_Markin 6 лет назад +11

      This.

    • @ant.upptech
      @ant.upptech 6 лет назад +4

      you are right, that the driver model changed in Vista, but you are wrong that "windows drivers were originally designed to handle simple peripherals". WDM existed before Vista, NT had its DM too both preivious models' drivers could manage everything what existed, not only "mice, keyboards and printers". SCSI, IDE, PCI, USB, ethernet, display drivers, any peripherals.

    • @Bobcat665
      @Bobcat665 5 лет назад +10

      Despite the prior existence of NT-based "DM" drivers, there was still plenty of consumer grade hardware that was left hanging out to dry. The manufacturers' initial attempts at driver support, overall, were quite shoddy. The OS, itself, was good but its launch was pretty terrible.

    • @Charlesb88
      @Charlesb88 5 лет назад +5

      The new driver model in Vista was indeed one of the big issues that caused problems for users of Vista. For users upgrading from Windows XP and trying to use older hardware that worked fine with XP, they ran into buggy driver issues if the found updated drivers at all. Even new drivers for new peripherals could be buggy at first as the manufacturers learned the new driver model. The peripheral manufacturers just didn’t do a good job at first of providing solid drivers for Vista at first. I’ve heard the same complaint about Windows ME though there is some debate about this. Likely Windows Me suffered from being a stopgap OS until Windows XP was ready and thus suffered from rushed development and lack of sufficient attention, with resources devoted to Win2000 and later XP (based on Win2000 in certain respects)

    • @althejazzman
      @althejazzman 5 лет назад +3

      Exactly, and have barely changed since. Also driver support for Vista was very slow because XP had been around for far too long, leading to complacency.

    I installed Vista a year after release. By then, most programs had been updated and the worst bugs ironed out, so things generally worked fine. At least Vista had a great IPv6 stack at the time, the best one available. It took many years before MacOS and Linux caught up with it. The reason people had much less problems with Win7 is probably because most software didn't really have to change and Win7 benefited from a lot of work that went into Vista.

      Vista was better than its reputation, it just demanded too much hardware for its time. I think thats why it turned out so shitty. When the first netbooks came out they put XP onto them because they were too weak to run Vista. And doing so under 1 GB of RAM is hell.

    Yeah, honestky vista wasn't so bad, hell, i feel like 7 is just vista with a few smoothed edges, but i feel like the main problem was that most common computers at te time were not prepared, hell, i. Remember when XP came out it suffered from the same problem, and yet nowdays is praised as one of the best windows out there, is just that with vista the threshold was bigger and by the time the computers stepped up to an acceptable level 7 came out. And the difference in requirements between the two was minimal, so people skipped directly to the new system, leaving vista with its original bad reputation

    Vista wasn't bad if you had a good machine. The manufacturers selling trash Atom processors with Vista installed, of course would run like trash. Vista was the beginning of the "signed drivers" being mandatory which overall was a big deal and was seriously needed. I will admit, the driver issue was a problem initially, but worked out in the end.

    • @amirabudubai2279
      @amirabudubai2279 7 лет назад +5

      Signed drivers are a waste of time, hints the fact the more secure OS's don't even bother; it takes the same user privileges to install a singed driver as it does to destroy the system in other ways.
      Most of Microsoft's security updates are just security theater with the actual security upgrades coming from better browsers and email scans.

    • @SupraBlack-dp4zz
      @SupraBlack-dp4zz 7 лет назад +30

      Signed drivers are not a waste of time. You ever install RAID drivers that aren't signed? Do you really want (or trust) those types of drivers? Trust me, you want drivers to be signed and certified by MS to make sure they work with your system. Of course I'm talking about enterprise level hardware. But since Vista and signed drivers, blue screens have disappeared for the most part due to crap drivers.

      Vista at release was shit, and even I can agree with that even though Vista is by far my favorite release. Add service pack 2 and you got a pretty stable operating system, although you'd be hard pressed to find updates since they stopped supporting it. It was the stepping stone for many newer operating systems like 7, which went on to be one of the most successful OS's Microsoft produced. If you want to run Vista properly, a decent dual-core CPU is necessary with a small graphics chip (at least GMA) and a good amount of RAM (at least 2 GB) and it will do fine. These heavy requirements pushed computer manufacturers to install better components and push the industry forward, IMO. I was able to run Vista (with no SP mind you) on an Intel Pentium 4 and 4 GB of RAM (a Dell Dimension 4700), and you know how bad those old Pentium 4's are now what with how shitty NetBurst was...

      If you want a superficial answer, just Google how many incidents in past a couple years caused by Windows 10 update. If you want a much deeper answer, you need to understand the underlying technology called WinRT used by Windows 10 App framework and how it is integrated with traditional desktop. WinRT is worst mistake of Window Architect, inefficient, terrible usability and overly complicated. Android copied many technology from Windows (most people don't know about this) but did a better job to make those things more modern.

      To me that is exactly how I think of Windows today. Windows 8.1 is at least customizable and can be made to look like Windows 7 with centered titlebar text, as well as having Metro be avoided. WinPadOS 10's metro cannot be avoided, and you can _only_ dial it down. There is also spyware and adware built-in, which is awful. Windows 8.1, Vista and even ME is better than that piece of Tablet UI crap.

    I've been using Vista for last 8 years, works great. I mostly use chrome and google, but this OS works good and doesn't have all the extra stuff on Windows 10. Just read some comments after posting, I'm running it with 4GBs of Ram and a Dell Inspiron. Seems like everything works smooth together. I did buy a new computer 8 months ago with Windows 10, but returned it because I was spending time trying to get the same ease of Vista. Couldn't really get the start menu/button to really feel the same. I feel on W10 they tru to push other MS programs/games/apps on me, and I just want a clean experience. I do use apps, but all under chrome and it works smooth. I did try Cortana, but since I just use chrome, it works smooth with all my apps and syncs on my android phone very intuitively. Now I've been using android more as an OS system, but MS is smoother in some areas. Now smartphones are powerful enough to run about all normal programs ( not a gamer), and you can cast it to a monitor and use BT keyboard and mouse. Please I like my old MS office. I did try 365 but seemed like it took longer, maybe the whole cloud system. My system works good, but I know Vista is dated, and I would like to upgrade. I wish Android has a smooth OS that would run MS. I kind of thought maybe a chrome book, but looks a little too light for what I really need for business. If anyone has a good suggestion, please let me know.

      OS X isn't much better, it does have slightly better APIs, though.
      The point is: Windows 10 is still a pile of garbage even if you return to the old start menu and disable the spying systems that your can disable. OS X is also bad, with even worse proprietary-ness.

    In my experience Vista failed because it looked different. I know, that sounds ridiculous, but hear me out. Most users don't care about all that technical stuff, in fact they're intimidated by it. Anything new to a typical user in this era was very intimidating. They'll be worried that they have to "learn a new OS" and would rather just stick with something familiar, like Windows XP. I was building PCs at the time and I knew people who just wouldn't even consider using Vista simply because they wanted what was familiar, so I put XP on the machines.
    Things are different now, people are somewhat more computer literate. PCs then to non-technical people were the magic box they used to get onto MySpace and type things up in Word. Now they carry computers in their pocket and are at least much more accustomed to navigating a user interface. If XP were the dominant Windows version now and they just launched Vista, I don't think they'd have as much as a problem with it today.

    I mainly used Vista for several years, and while Aero looks great out of the box, it tends to slow things down to a crawl as the hardware ages. The Geek Squad guys were incredulous that we had been running it for years on 1 GB of RAM.
    The other problem was the lack of backwards compatibility. While XP could do a decent job of running games designed for slightly older versions of Windows (98, 2000, etc.), Vista only had maybe a 1-in-3 success rate of smoothly running games designed for XP.
    That said, I do still like Vista's versions of 'Mahjong Titans' and 'Paint'.

    This will sound incredible but I used Vista from '07 to '17, on a Toshiba satellite laptop, 10 YEARS, heavy use every day. The last year and a half I stopped ALL updates, and had NO anti-virus software for the last year (except Defender), just used half a dozen cleaners and malware scanners every 3 or so days. had NO virus's, though occasional malware/trojans, bsod's once in a while (none that weren't fixed in a day or two...and I'm no techie). I never had any problems with Vista worth mentioning, but I went directly to it from Win95 so never knew XP. Now I'm on Win10 latest version (a few days ago). Meh.

    I knew the gentleman that had the responsibility for giving the go ahead to release the home version of Vista. Or I should say, the gentleman who was forced to release the home version. He knew it wasn't ready. The last time I saw him, before he passed away from diabetes a few years later, I was in a meeting room setting up my webcast equipment (nothing to do with Microsoft). He walked in, looked at me, and said, "I don't want to talk about Vista." Enough said. He was a great fellow and we miss him.

    Most of the complaints came from a change in how drivers work. A lot of hardware manufacturers screwed up, and Vista kind of got the blame. Eventually, the hardware manufacturers got their drivers up to snuff, but by then Vista already had an undeserved reputation for being buggy and crash-prone.

    My aunt has had a windows vista laptop since the time it came out. She recently bought a new laptop, since vista went unsupported April 11, 2017. I asked her if she had any plans for her vista laptop, and she said that I could have it! I don't care if the operating system was unpopular. I still think it would be very cool to own!

    I guess Windows Vista isn't that bad. In fact, I had one when my mom bought a new laptop, which is Dell, years ago. Unfortunately, we had Vista for less than a year because there was trouble in its hardware. Had to bring the laptop for service. When it's done, someone upgrade our Vista to Windows 7. That version of 7 was a pirated copy however.

      What kind of service would do that? Someone who hates vista? I can't bear this kind of people who thinks they know better what the consumer wants. My aunt got an XP pc in 2009, she had it set up by an IT guy so I guess this guy downgraded it. She's confident she never asked, and it made her life more complicated if anything. Besides, in 2009, Vista was miles above XP, and milimeters under 7.

    I think it really depended on what hardware you had at the time. I remember having a computer at the time with some single core AMD Athlon 64 and it's motherboard received proper vista drivers and it ran flawlessly. Even on a first generation SATA drive it ran quite snappy for the time. I never experienced any crashes whatsoever and it only came to an end when the board gave up and died. We moved on to a laptop with an AMD Turion Dual core I believe, and that ran absolutely fine as well, that was one of the HP Pavilions with the famous GPU failure fault so after that died I moved on to a desktop based on the AM3+ socket, an ASUS board which also had proper Windows Vista drivers, and once again it ran flawlessly! I had been on that OS for a solid 8 years before moving to Windows 7 as I needed better software compatibility, but my time on Vista was great and it'll always be my favourite OS

  • @althejazzman

    People also forget that Vista was the first properly supported 64-bit Windows. XP 64-bit never had a good driver development base. Once the hardware and drivers caught up with Vista, the changes to 7 were tiny, but by that time the reputation damage was done.

    They were able to finish it. It's a shame that the "major features cut from the OS" list has a length of several dozen. Here's some features intended for Longhorn:
    - Aero (shipped)
    - Aero Glass (shipped, removed after Windows 8 Release Preview)
    - Sidebar (shipped, removed in Windows 7 (the gadgets could float around on their own), and then completely removed after Windows 8 Release Preview, although all of the things that would make it useful were gone after 2005)
    - WinFS (dropped from the OS in 2004, after the reset, and planned to be integrated into SP1. A beta version was released in 2005, then a "beta 1 refresh" in early 2006, before being cancelled in June of 2006.)
    - Avalon (shipped as the Windows Presentation Foundation)
    - Indigo (shipped as the Windows Communication Foundation)
    - Virtual desktops (dropped, shipped in Win10, although in LH there were only 4 but you could have separate wallpapers for each)
    - Castles (kind of shipped as HomeGroups in windows 7, but not really)
    - Libraries/virtual folders (dropped in 2006, shipped in Windows 7)
    - PC-to-PC Sync (dropped in June 2006)
    - Active Content Wizard (renamed to Guided Help, then dropped in 2006 - technically did ship with Vista RTM/SP0, but nothing used it)
    - WinFX (Avalon, Indigo, and WinFS) (partially shipped)
    - New start menu (shipped)
    there's a lot more.
