@@NoeliAcoba Oh tell me about it! I started 3 years ago and was worried that I'd never be taken seriously. Now I'm looking at applying to NECCA after I get my graphic design degree next year. I train in rope, silks, duo aerials, trapeze, tightwire, and partner acro. My husband also started as an adult, and I tease him all the time because his first gig was at the Kimmel Center in Philly whereas most get their feet wet in studio recitals.

old age of 21!!? im just starting a foundation degree in circus and i am 24 years old. I have Zero background in gymnastics, dance, aerial, sport or anything physical. I started training at the age of 22 (while doing a masters degree in Nutrition), Istarted from ground zero, with very minimal strength and no flexibility. But i trained HARD for two straight years and auditioned for a circus school with veryyyyy little hope of getting accepted but somehow did!! I have just started my first year and I have no idea how things will go yet but i just wanted to say that it is never too late!! 21 is not old at all! i am starting at the age of 24 and yes many of the students with me are 18 years old with years of professional gymnastics training and yes I may need to train harder and longer to catch up but if you really want something you can make it possible.

    • @NoeliAcoba

Hi Nora! You are very inspirational 🤗I wholeheartedly agree with you! I believe that anyone, of any age, with or without a sport background can start circus. I meant the "old age" part jokingly, and I am so sorry if it didn't seem that way! 😭I think it's silly that anyone over 16-years-old is oftentimes considered "old" in the circus world and in the sports world in general (at least that has been my experience). This myth really limits what people believe they can do and achieve when they find circus or a sport that they love at a later age, and I've felt this limitation as well in the beginning of my circus career. That's why I believe your strong mindset, hard work, and tenacity will take you far in circus. And I admire you and the other circus people I've met who started circus in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even in their 60s - who had to work extra hard to achieve their circus goals 💜Congratulations on getting into circus school and I'm wishing you all the best on your circus journey! And if you don't mind me asking, I'd love to know which one you got into and what your circus discipline is 🤗 I love meeting new circus people 😊

@@NoeliAcoba Thank you for your lovely reply!! I definitely felt like I was too old to just now be starting a foundation degree in circus especially since I have no background in anything professional but then I heard inspiring stories from people who started even later in life! It is incredible! The beauty of circus is that there are so many different disciplines so you'd see people from all walks of life!
I got into the National Centre for Circus Arts in London xD still don't know what my discipline is as I am literally in my fourth day in school! The first term is for us to taste test all the different disciplines so we can then narrow down our choices and then eventually choose which disciplines we want to specialize in! So I am hoping I find something I love and not get overwhelmed as I am already struggling with imposter syndrome haha. I really loveee aerial straps acts though and I am hoping that would be my discipline!
Maybe one day we'd cross paths in some performance or circus event ;) would be lovely to meet you!! keep inspiring others and thank you for this video

I also took my first silks class at 21 (and then had nowhere to train for a year during the pandemic lol), got a 4 year degree and worked for two years. It's so inspiring to see others who started circus "late" and managed to go professional! Love your RUclips channel, keep up the great work.

This was wonderful, thank you so so much for your insight! I'm a 20 year old girl, and I really tried hard to convince myself that juggling was just a silly teenager phase and infatuation of mine, and that I should have left it after I was left with an injury that made me leave my dear first discipline... But now I have found two other juggling disciplines that I've fallen in love with, and people around me are reminding me of how when I was a child I used to play around with all kinds of objects, so I have started to come to terms with the fact that I REALLY want to become a juggler (for personal motives too, it's a huge journey for me in so many aspects). I am studying in college too and plan on finishing as I really like that too in case all else fails :)
However, my disciplines are... quite rare in the circus, but I have a clear vision of where I want to get with them. So what do I do? I'm finding that circus schools often center more around aerial and/or floor gymnastics, or clown, and if there's juggling it's always numbers disciplines (maces, balls... which I have zero interest in). I really want to hone my chosen disciplines, but one of them doesn't even exist in my country (twirling baton), and the other is extremely rare, especially in performances. Do you perhaps know what I could do about that in my case? How do I climb up the ladder to being a performer, when there are no doors to what I want to do?

I’ve always wanted to do circus but I come from a family that did not have loads of money. I kindly asked my mom and I got to try a few lesson group lessons. Though I back then was shy, i was one of the oldest there (I was 12 but everyone else was like 6 or 7) but we had to stop taking lessons after 5 classes because my mom didn’t have the money for it anymore. I had a bad experience with those 5 lessons because of me feeling not fitting in because of my age and being scared to do acts because every child was watching me. I was older so I should know what and how to do it. Besides all that I did really have the urge to go crazy and fall in love with doing stunts but I kept myself from doing that. Now I’m 17 and I’m planning on going back to the same school-ish thingy to take lessons again when I turn 18. Mainly because I have more money now and because they give adult classes. Making me probably the youngest. And I really hope I fall in love with it again and eventually perform

That was amazing. The family bit made me tear up a bit.
I think you did a really great job of balancing the inspirational part and the “this is really hard work” part. Hindsight is 20/20 but I think I really got a glimpse of just how much of a mountain you’ve climbed.
I know I joke but I really really wanna see this movie.
Not only is it a genuine “follow your dreams” tale but it’s also an underdog story in a way you don’t see many good ones these days. Like recently they’ve been making them up from situations that ARE impossible but yours is something that should be shown on screen as a genuine example of something that IS possible even though it was really f***ing hard. You’re an inspiration to so many people. I’m so about this. I want to make it happen. It has everything. Love, family, rooting for the underdog who WAS at a disadvantage because of your age, training etc. but who refused to give up, reaching for “impossible” dreams... you had and have so so much at stake and that would’ve scared people off from even thinking about *starting*, but you’ve never given up. I’m sure you’ve been terrified but you’ve never backed down. You’re an inspiration Noeli and I’m so proud to know you! ❤️
Someone who has connections who is watching this- give the people what they want! Make the movie!

I have a bit of dance background and I’ve been doing silks for about a year now, but I’m just wondering, how many hours did you spend a week training? I can’t really afford to go to classes everyday , only twice a week if I’m lucky. Do you have any at home training tips ? :)

I relate to your experience a lot! I also didn't start until I was 21 and in college, but didn't begin training seriously until I was 23 when I started protrack at NECCA. And I do rope! Now I'm a year and a half out of school trying to figure out what the next step is during all of this. I'm super inspired by your trajectory and move to MTL to work with Irena - I had a couple lessons with her in 2019 and have been wanting to go back and train with her ever since. How did you manage to stay in Montreal (I'm assuming you're not a Canadian citizen)? And do you have any tips on finding online work so you don't have to be rooted to one place? I've also been getting a little into video editing and thinking that could be something I could offer eventually :)

Hello there! I'm a new subscriber and I've always wanted to perform as a circus preformer. I'm a young teen girl and I've already started to train my body and skills. My main question is, is that when you were performing, did you feel any pain or unbearable feeling?

    How about E:
Your mom said she always thought you where going to be a circus act (specifically Ariel silks) and now that you’re 20 with your first ever OK job you want something to look forward too because you already want to travel and have reliable income while you do so? 😳

Hello, I’m a teen aerial and contortionist. I’m not old enough to apply for most cirque performance jobs in my area and I’m still in school. Should I keep training and wait till I’m old enough to apply? I also keep second guessing myself because not much of my family or friends support me in this state. What should I do?

Do you think 25 is too late? I have been doing hula hoop for 3 to 4 years now and am just getting into gymnastics and aerial but I'm SO ready to go all in for this. If it takes years to hone the craft, am I still going to get hired at 30 or something?

Yeah better now than later, this comment old but maybe eomeone else want some insight on this too. If you wait and dont do it, more and more years will pass on and by then you would of already been able to be set on getting a career on it, so might as well start asap

I have always wanted to perform at circus. I’m curious, I done classes for Areal hoop and silk. I don’t think it’s enough, is it a good idea if when I leave school, I sign up for circus arts collage in London, will that be able to get me somewhere in life and join the circus after training for years? I’m struggling to find advice what to do…

That's true - live circus took a hiatus for a while 😅 Circus performers went virtual during the pandemic, but now live performances are slowly coming back 🤗
