  • I grew up in the circus, but by the time I left my real job in 2023, I'd been living in the "normal world" for a looooooong time. Here's a little story of how I ran away from the circus to go join and an office and then ran away again.

Well as someone who apparently listened to Jack for years on WBUR and who had NO IDEA he was also Jacques Ze Whipper, I can personally attest to his acting ability and capability to get into character.
Also, while I'm sure his show has improved and been refined through the years, this was a lesson for me in how much fantastic talent goes unrecognized, cast aside unwittingly by people who would make a fortune if they took a chance on someone.
Thanks for sharing your story, getting us through the pandemic, and making us laugh.

At the age of 29, I ran away and joined a Circus. That was in the mid 90s. Best adventure and learning experience I ever had. It was one of the last one ring tent circuses in the country at the time. It closed down 2 years later. Circuses are a wonderous part of history. We are blessed to be a part of that history. Life is such a crazy thing. I went to college initially for biology. Hated it and changed to Business and Poli Sci. Sadly, due to financial issues and family members with health problems, I never got to finish my degree. I eventually got a job at a bank and worked there for 9yrs. When my first child turned one, I became a SAHM. That's been 8yrs now. I had always put off my true hobby and passion as just a fun thing to do on the side, but I'm embracing it now. So at 40yrs old, I'm working on and nearly finished writing my first book. My goal is to have it completed and hopefully published this year. I don't even care if it becomes a best seller (though that would be amazing!) I'm just happy to accomplish this goal and to show my children that they should never give up on their dreams and you never know what life has in store for you!

I can relate. I've spent most of my career in middle management disability services but two years ago, I quit a well-paying job because the stress was literally killing me (I could feel it) and became a full-time self-employed ASL interpreter (I'd always worked it as a part-time side gig). BEST DECISION I'VE EVER MADE CAREER-WISE!! *I* determine my schedule, I decide what jobs to take or not take, I can take a day off if I want although that's sometimes the hardest thing to do as there's a lot of demand out there for what I do. I am my own boss! And I still make a good living doing it! Doing what you love or at least enjoy is THE most important thing career-wise. Glad you found yours!

So, after a lot of thought in introspection, she 'ran off' and started the steps to be a full time massage therapist. Well done you! ❤ You‘re right, sometimes one has to listen to that inner voice when it calls for change. I went into teaching at 42 and while it was a massive challenge, that truly was the best decision I ever made! 😊 So you could probably say that in my own way I joined a circus too - pretty much feels like it sometimes 😅 All the best from across the Atlantic (any shows in store for Germany, perhaps…? I‘m sure the Ramstein Community would love Jaques Ze Whipper to stop by one of these days) 🙃

I was a nurse for years, but I have a degenerative condition that makes walking difficult, so in my early 50s, I've gone back to school. It's fun and scary and I don't regret it at all.

Its so weird to me hearing about my city in videos. Despite being objectively young, hearing the dates of the snowmaggedon and the Boston Bombing makes me feel old🤣
But seriously, hearing stories like yours makes me feel much more hopeful. It's good to be reminded you can change paths.

Inspirational. ❤ I think this is such a great message for people who are worried about how to reinvent themselves. You can always start new. Can't wait to see you in Larkspur again!!
(And I so want to run away and join the circus. I do lyra, but definitely need the full-time job to fund training. Some circus can be so expensive.)

I wish you could come out to The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale, California, in the future. I volunteer there in St Ives Guild. I have enjoyed going to this faire since the 1970's in the Agoura Hills, California. Your quality of performance shines and gives enjoyment to many people including me. Glad I found your video/vlogs on Utube..... Hello 👋🏻 from Southern California 🌴😊

Great respect you‘ve done this step. I‘m in a similar situation. I wanna do something I think I will really enjoy. But sadly I can‘t afford it atm. I hope there will be a way to do it one day and it won‘t take long as I’m not the youngest anymore. Thanks for your video. Actually just watched it cause I saw some vids from you recently and I was a little bit curios about that whipper guy. Didn‘t expect such an important message for myself which fits so much to my current life. Thanks a lot! You done the right thing.

I went to school for archaeology and in my country you can easily get a job, but working your way up is a lot of hard work and even before finishing school I realized I didnt feel excited to do that. And the negatives of the job made me lose a lot of excitement for archaeology as a whole. I did however fall in love with something I never thought I would like: data analysis. I loved nothing more than taking the results of an excavation and analyzing them, but I found it really annoying how much of it end up coming down to interpretation and how often you lack a big enough data pool to really say anything of value, so a career in data analysis it is. And as a bonus there is way more money in it lol.
