- This foray into the 'modern era' MacBooks was a good lesson in focusing less on what you don't know and more on what you do know. Just because it's a newer machine, doesn't mean it has a new fault.

I've had many people suggest it in the past as an alternative to hot tweezers. I'll probably practise it, it was a bit jank here, but it worked.
@@Adamant_IT You could also glob some solder onto one tip and hit both edges of the cap at once to desolder it. That is if you have enough space though.

Hello Adam, for the Future : 20v 0 amps is mostlikeli a ppbus short. Ans that Cap dies a lot. Also Backlight cap. Also mesure Résistance between ppbus and ppcpu_s0 .If ist 0.somethimg Ohm , there ist a dead CPU mosfet. I have Seen 20% where ppbus Shorts 3v3_s5 at the CPU ! So after Clearing ppbus Short, there will BE a dead CPU since 3v3s5 goes to the cpu.

You did spend time looking for problems elsewhere, but I rather do a basic and check all.. like my mom always said, "people are quick to dispose an a electronic device, instead of checking for a repair, that could be simple or just a cleaning." "Check everything, even the smallest it could be the problem." "if not fixable, or complicated, then toss it."

Thanks for showing resistance to ground measurements of inductors on video and comparing with main power rail before any voltage injection, although I think it the reason behind it and the risks of not doing it should be made clearer. Too many people still injecting 19V not knowing it could go to the CPU (or something else) if high-side MOSFET is shorted, and recommending it to others…
Btw I'd recommend removing the SSD before working on the board, especially since PPBUS_G3H goes directly to it on this model.

I really appreciate that you are honest and upfront and you stick to fixing computers rather than to attack your viewers and to condemn other youtubers like Carey Hozerman does. He essentially is just a very experienced card swapper, but that is the extent of his abilities. He cannot do what you do. Keep up the great work!
Great vid. I don't mind capacitor repetition. When I first started watching repair vids I was worried I was just assimilating a lot of very specific cases. Now I feel like I have a more general understanding. Big part of that was multiple bad cap jobs.

Great fix Adam and no never get fed up with dead capacitors as I have had problems in the past with the wretched things though ones much larger than you have to deal with. I like watching your videos partially because you are a dead ringer for my grandson (without the goatee) here in Australia.😀

Brilliant video. Had a mac with similar problem. Tried injecting voltage but nothing seemed to warm up. Turned out it was thbe exact same capacitor as in your video! Just removed it and it worked fine :)
i was scared little bit too when i opened first a macbook made 2016 or late but after a little u will feel at home its very familiar and logically arranged

A situation like this calls for some hot tweezers.
I use the two pronged iron attack quite regularly. I think I would have tried the two caps in parallel one on top of the other if space allowed.

Nice fix, someday i'll get lucky and it's just a capacitor too.
Also, FlexBV has the option to send you from the component in the boardview to the one in the schematics or vice versa by just right clicking, no need to ctrl+f at all. You probably know this already and somehow that feature is not available but just throwing that out there.

One thing you said - putting 2 10uf capacitors in series would give you 10uf at a higher voltage rating - actually in series you add up 1/capacitance of each cap. (Example: 1/c1+1/c2+1/c3)

On your ts100 tip knife edge, is that the ts-ku thinner blade or the ts-k knife edge?
I still haven't purchased my ts100..
a bit of a pain when the power cord and the tip is not what I want.
Three different places, sell the ts100 and tips: Walfront, Uy Chan and Sain Smart. Great fix today... QUITE a tight fit to repair.. but done.. never tired of watching capacitors go bye bye! 😂"just toss them out Graham."

It's a TS-KU. I wouldn't expect to find an iron with this tip as standard though. However, the cheap tips on ebay for about $10 each are good enough IMHO.

Good video. I'm glad you didn't use Kapton tape. Kapton tape is highly conductive of heat and is sometimes used as a thermal pad and for electrical isolation, as in, isolating mosfets from ground. It's claim to fame is it's ability to withstand high heat and/or electrical current and not melt, so using it as a wall (not touching the component) to block heat does seem to work.. If you had use Kapton tape and hot air I think you would have melted the connectors. Don't believe me, look it up. It always seems that people want to use hot air (I blame RUclips repair videos) all the time when a soldering iron will and does work better in a lot of situations. When using the thermal camera get a sheet of cardboard and poke a hole in it. You can then use this hole to isolate your hotspot.
The UTI260B thermal imager is very good and only £250. I got it with the macro lens from China.

Question, I have a macbook air, that will not come on. The machine appears to have had water damage. The water damage is tripped. So I replaced the power board, thinking that it was not getting power. The chips are on the front of the board will spark when touched with probes.. Any suggestions?? If I am out of line, my apologies..

Quick question, the other soldering iron, would you recommend or not and what brand as a starter for now?
Pinecil and TS100 are both solid irons IMHO, same tips, same firmware. Pinecil is my favourite, and cheaper, but subject to actually being in stock.

It would be really cool to see a video "walkthrough" of your shop, including all (or most) of the equipment you use. I had just opened up a computer repair shop in my town, and am still needing to find certain tools, and everytime I watch one of your videos, I see a new tool I could use. XD
There's plans for this in the future, but it's waiting for me to get a bunch of stuff sorted first!

I have seen a lot of your videos where you replace caps, but what actually causes the cap to fail ?
Just fatigue I think. Sometimes it can be shock or heat, or a combination of both. I've not researched the analysis of ceramic failures to find out though.

If I may share a tip, since I also have a slow autoranging multimeter, when you're fishing for shorts in the ohm's range, you'll save a lot of time by going manual range.

@@Adamant_IT I'm confused! I was just referring to the auto-ranging between ΜΩ - kΩ - Ω of the multimeter and that it's much faster if you have it locked to a range using the blue "range" button. Thanks for the reply though!

Poormans Hot Tweezers. Been there done it!
Off topic and kind of urgent matter. I have a DELL Laptop given as a gift by a friend. It´s used but looks new. The thing is that the AC/DC Adapter and the laptop have no marking or sticker of any kind. It outputs 18.5 Volts aprox but when plugged into the laptop it drops to 10 ish - Volts. Any suggestion on what the issue is. Mobo or the adapter it self???

is this short a result of using a defective battery charger?
I'd say no. Just the usual component fatigue. I think bad chargers would most likely damage the Thunderbolt controllers, and that would manifest as the laptop not negotiating 20v with a known-good charger.
I think non-compliant type-c chargers that just belt out 20v all the time do exist, but I haven't seen on in the wild yet.

That's actually a really good way to describe boost mode 😄
You can set the boost temp in the iron settings, so if you work on lighter boards at run 350c or 380c set, you could boost to 400c for large connector anchors or something. But since I mostly work on mobos with 400c set, I just need mooooooooooooooooore.
How much resistance is added by your probe leads? I’m guessing almost an ohm.
I'm fairly certain my probes are broken. They feel a million miles out right now and they never used to be. Just time for a new set I think, regardless of compensating the multimeter.

Aah, it's a Pine64 PinePower Desktop, but I can't find it on their store, I suspect it may have been discontinued... I know they were a bit hit and miss for reliability. Mine was fine, but I did have problems with their other charger they also had at one point.

For Apple products that do not have a touch screen, they always have such dirty screens in these videos. Since they do not need to be touched, why are they always so filthy? My Dell touchscreen laptop has never had a screen that look as dirty as the ones here.
