Salmon Fishing In Alaska's Copper River

  • I am excited to share this video of my family's annual salmon fishing trip to the Copper River. The first time I can remember fishing the Copper was in 1969. I was 5 years old. Today the river is essentially unchanged. When I go there with my children and grandchildren I don't have to tell them stories of what it used to be like when I was a boy, it is still the same.
    The Copper River Basin is full of a sandy silt which the constant wind blows into your tent, sleeping bag, food supply and fishing gear. The river itself is heavy with silt making it impossible to see into more than a few inches. In the place where we fish it is about 6 to 10 feet deep. We drag our nets along the bottom where the migrating salmon travel and hope to find them.
    We take very good care of our fish. At our campsite, we clean the fillets in a freshwater stream and immediately pack them on ice for the trip home. After the long drive back home we all work together to vacuum pack the fish and get it into the freezers. Copper River Reds are some of the highest quality wild salmon the world has to offer.
    I hope you enjoy the trip as much as I do. Perhaps I will see you downriver someday.

Just know that the 40 minutes or so you post every Friday bring me not only peace, and comfort but just as importantly, an escape from all my personal struggles if only for a brief amount of time.

    I love seeing how the entire family gets involved with the catching, cleaning, processing, and packaging the salmon. Everyone seems to have so much fun and it creates so many memories to pass down. You have taught your children and grandchildren well. They have a lot of knowledge and skills to pass on. You are one of the few people that know for a fact that no matter what happens, your children and grandchildren will never go hungry or without safe shelter. God Bless you and all the men like you for passing on your wisdom, knowledge, and skills.

    It's really great to see men investing in younger generations, teaching them how to do things and how to be men. What you're building are family ties that help people feel grounded and loved, instilling the kind of confidence that allows people to pursue their dreams and invest in others' lives. My father and brothers went out there every year and I was so jealous I could never tag along because I would rather be catching then processing. Lol. Hearing my brothers stories and the bond they had with our father always put a smile on my face. Luckily, I married a man who also loves the copper river and we make it out there every year with our daughter. The catching is one of my favorites but most importantly the memories my daughter will hopefully have...priceless. Beautiful family you have and thank you for this video!

      Good morning my friend. It is so great to hear from you. I loved reading your comments about your experiences on the Copper. Yes, it is so important to take the family (both boys and girls) to the river and make some memories together. I can think of no better place to do that than fishing at Chitina. One of the awesome things about the Copper River is that it remains essentially unchanged from my childhood over half a century ago. I don't have to describe to my grandchildren what it was like in the good old days, I can just grab my dip nets and show them. Peace to you my friend.

In the videos of the campsite you can see the hazy air in front of the mountains. That is the wind-borne dust that fills the whole valley. We come home coated in it. This river is as wild and wonderful as Alaska can get. It is essentially unchanged from my first trip over 50 years ago.

    A wonderful celebration of family and life my friend. I have no doubt you see yourself as a young boy and man as you look upon your family, your own past experiences on this very same river, as your family, the next two generations, gather and prepare your catch for the coming year. The humor and good-natured banter of fish camp; the bountiful harvest you and your family have secured from the Copper River, just as you and your family have done your entire lives. These are the memories that will last a lifetime, and the lifetimes of your future generations as they in turn pass on these heartfelt, family traditions. I have many of these same memories with my father, as we fished and hunted on the streams and in the woods of Maine. Peace and blessings to you and your wonderful family. Thank you for sharing.

      You are so welcome my friend. I was actually thinking about you when I was down there fishing. I knew you would enjoy the trip. You are correct that the Copper is powerful. Almost every year someone loses their life in that 10 mile stretch of water. It is very dangerous and very cold, and the heavy silt in the water makes swimming almost impossible. We alway shoot straight down through the canyon and fish the calmer water at the lower limit. It is not a river to take lightly.

    • @afishingmagician
      @afishingmagician 3 года назад

      @@ThisIsMyAlaska I can well imagine that silt would cling to wet clothing pretty quickly. Make a mud popsicle of you in a moment or two. But good to see you and your guys treated the river with the respect it deserves. A fishing trip to Alaska is on my bucket list for sure! Who knows, maybe we'll run into you some year on the Copper! It is a river I have always wanted to fish, and see. I am situated between the Fraser River and the Vedder/Chilliwack River. Two of the most productive rivers in Canada. I moved here to be close to them. Love to have you come and fish sometime. We have an extra ensuite should you ever come this way. I have 20 plus years of fishing those rivers and could show you a really good time. We get huge Chinook salmon here as well. You would call them King. The Fraser produces some of the largest Sockeye runs on the western seaboard.

In Florida it is either in a can or in a freezer case or on a buffet and the canned is the best. What an amazing family and it was a sure pleasure being a part of it with you. It hasn't changed at all since those days. It is still as wild and wonderful as it was a half a century ago.

So seeing all your videos is lovely. When you and grandson? Were setting up the tent brought back so many memories of our camping years with my late husband. We raised our boys starting as babies in 9x12 wall tent. I could probably still erect a tent with little help? We did lots wilderness camping in Canada in the 70s.

    If your allowed to net catch are you allowed to snag them with a weighted treble hook. I can't believe your boat is that old and runs that good. Thank you for taking us on your trip.

    • @ThisIsMyAlaska
      @ThisIsMyAlaska  3 года назад

      Good morning Jeff. I am just sitting down with my coffee. In this area, we are only allowed to dip-net. Upriver from the bridge (where we launched) is the subsistence section. People there can use fish wheels as well as dip-nets. On the shot coming over the bridge you can see that old truck with the long boom and the fish wheel (that was quiet the set up). There are many clear water streams where rod and reel fishing are permitted but I don't know of any place that permits snagging. I don't do any other type of fishing though other than dip-netting. It is by far my favorite method of fishing in this river. My old boat has a fairly new Merc and jet under the hood. So far so good.

    Nice haul! I'd say it's worth that long but gorgeous drive! Great times and the best memories are made when Family comes together to work and play. I bet those nets take some strength to manage. The laughing was contagious :D Such a beautiful Family you have. What's the limit? With that much silt, is it difficult to see sandbars? Thank you for sharing your adventure with your Boys and the gathering back home. Wishing you and your Boys and all the Fathers who have gathered here on your channel, a Happy Fathers Day!

    • @ThisIsMyAlaska
      @ThisIsMyAlaska  3 года назад +7

      Thanks for the comments and questions Ginger. Yes, those nets will wear you out by the end of the day. We usually lose one or two a year into the river. The limit is 29 reds and one king per head of household and 10 additional fish for each member of the household. My wife and I still have two boys living at home, so our household lime is 59 reds and 1 king. We can't see into the water at all. The river rises and falls from day to day depending on the temperature. When it is very warm (like this weekend) the snow in the mountains melts and the river rises quickly. When it is high we can run the boat just about anywhere, but when it is low the channel is very defined. Lots of people get stuck on the sandbars. Thanks again for writing. Great questions.

    Hello It's already night here but I had to write you back on your wonderful letter. i have no words of appreciation for you and your wife. You are wonderful people with big hearts. Only such people are capable of such beautiful things as adopting strange children. I have no words of appreciation. I'll tell you honestly, it's probably unthinkable in Europe and that's why I'm full of praise. what good people you are. Give my deepest appreciation to your wife for raising so many children (and to you, of course). And the fact that your daughter also adopted so many children only proves how great you raised her and passed on your love for humanity
