Making the Psytrance Bassline was never an easy task, but we all agree that some keys are easier than others. My lowest track key was D, and I never made a track lower than D. This time I made a track in C#, so my thoughts were that I will transpose the track from D to C# and that will be the solution with minor changes on the processing. Surprisingly, just transposing it to C#, the bassline lost a lot of warmth and fullness, it become dull and kind of emptier. So my search for a C# bassline recipe has begun. Two weeks later, I found myself searching for the C# bassline recipe, calling other producers and soon enough realising that making a great sounding, snappy and powerful psytrance bassline in C# is not an easy task.

yeahh ! sounds awesome !! yes i have some tracks in D and is very dificult to mix with percussions and leads
This is exactly what we needed! Amazing
Sounds amazing!
You finally nailed it and the result is fkin’ brutal.. amazing work !!
The problem with c and c# is, that the main harmonic in the bass and the tail of the kick goes below 35hz, wich is barely recognizable for the human ear and below the cutoff off of many speakers. Taking it to the next octave (so doubling the frequency) makes the low end too high and I always struggle between no warmth and too high.
Anyways, you definitely nailed that bassline in c#.
Not only that, even the second harmonic is in a low zone, with D, the second harmonic is enough and it carries the bass. While in C# I believe it goes to the area where it doesn't have the warmth and that’s where the problem starts.
There are major problems with the synthesis as well as setting up the filter envelope. But it’s a pretty big topic
@@EClipChannel I would love a video comparing pros and cons of different keys in electronic music!
@EClipChannel hey mate. So how did you actually get it sounding right in the end? Are you able to show the patch and processing or are you going to hang on to that for now. I know it's cheeky to ask but thought I'd put it out there... I'm trying to make psytech in low keys like luis m, trillingo and green wolve. the closest I've been able to get is with a square saw combo with the square doing the lower octave. Then mid side eq boosting the mids between 150-300hz. + cutting everything below say 47hz on the bass and letting the kick provide that low harmonic. However the kick is in a higher note where its fundamental isn't too low. Also having to rely on the bass bending up in pitch , either octave jump or pitch bend into the "good range l" to get it sounding somewhat big. Anyway it's a massive headache and not sounding anwhere near as big as the references. Just keen to make a driving monotone bassline in c#, D , D# haha. Anyway cheers for the content
@@jojomarino7327 in that bpm zone is way easier. For faster musis it’s way harder as there is no time for lower frequecies to oscilate, when bpm is slower, then there is more time. Concentrate more on second harmonic.
TY mate
thanks bro
To make Basslines is like rocket science 😄,i m just joking 😀 but it is so hard to make the "perfect" sounding bassline 🤔
Thx for all your knowledge ,on RUclips and your Courses 🙂
Well, it can take years and years to master a solid kick and bass from scratch. Like, 10 years if you do it part-time, so yeah, kinda like rocket science : ) Or maybe I just suck, but I'm getting there! The game changer for me was to get acoustic treatment, and really really good monitors. Without this, I was pretty much wasting my time, unfortunately.
Heii Marko i really like your work, skills and your kindness for what you are sharing with us. Keep it up!
I remember your video about "styles" what is progressive and what's more uplifting and so on.. i really like to hear you opinion or definition of what's fullon and maybe some other "genres". Especially fullon would be interesting to me. I heard all over the years so many different explanations. So your video about progressive helped me a lot. Maybe it would help me as well for other styles. I'm just asking for that to improve my understanding and producing viewpoint, not to put other tracks in a box..
The name itself gives a description. Full-on refers to that in peak moments it’s gonna go full-on, many elements at the same time which gives that full-on energy. Compared with, let’s say dark-psy, dark-psy usually doesn’t give those energetic moments. Dark psy mostly keeps the amplitude of the track energy much slower and it progresses slowly, kick and bass will go almost the whole track, and track development would be much slower, similar to original progressive psy, while full-on will have ups and downs.
This comparison is between some kind of definitions and kore structures, but many artists are making fusions so speaking of genres is a bit hard.
Sorry for the late reply, been away for a while, trying to catch up now.
@@EClipChannel thank you very much. I appreciate your answer!
Very nice man Thank you for this!
But you did not show how you made the C# bass key
Nice 👍
ur next track broo i think ❤️❤️
Great tutorial. Is a rolling bass in D Sharp (low) easier or do you recommend I move it up a couple semitones (I really want to avoid doing this if possible). Cheers
I always wait atleast a month before i release it, and only if i then still like it and i don't want to change anything, i'll release it
So i dont have that overthinking with the final desicion... saves a lot of time in the longrun
Yeah C# is very hard because of the key targeting the low frequency in the spectrum. I only get it right when layering the bass, it's a bit easier if you're using a square wave for your bass but yeah, it hurts your feelings. I think the best way to approach your track when making it in C or C# is to try and take advantage of the mud in the track if that makes sense. I know that advice isn't from a technical point but yeah it kinda works for me when changing my mindset like that. I have a track in the key of C# that I'm really proud of.
fuckin amazing track man !
I've had success making bass in D# and transposing bounced audio down 2st. Will depend on the algorithm
Well in this case it didnt work out to transpose from the VST directly, not to mention sampling.
I've been keeping up with your videos for the past few years, and I've found them incredibly helpful! While Psychedelic Trance isn't my primary style, I've been able to gain some insights that I can apply to my own Trance productions, which lean towards the Uplifting and Tech subgenres.
At the moment, I'm in the process of creating a track in the key of C, and I'm encountering some difficulties in achieving a solid kick and bass... Do you have any valuable tips or advice that could help to get a solid kick&bass in C?
I would say that the same apples as for the bassline in C#
@@EClipChannel Does your kick and bass class demonstrate how to achieve a strong bass in C?
@@omarz7301 of course. C and C# are in the same zone!
@@EClipChannel Cool! Do you currently have any running promotions on the course? 😃
awsm 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I was really thinking, you developed your bass note with C# (the programming language) 😝
when is this track coming out? Sort of reminds me of Shuma but modernized, great stuff.

Still using reason. What about the track challange?
C# is definitely a nightmare, I have a track im working on which has a part of a melodic baseline that moves between c# and f# and the difference in the base energy is felt so much on my speakers, I’ve tried so many ways to improve it with no big success
Really tough note
I know this sound crazy but would it be possible to create a DrumnBass DnB kind of feel in a Psytrance track ? Regardless of Bassline
👍
What wound up being the major revelation in your approach?
I'm working on a track in C# right now and am struggling to get the bass right as well. It's not an easy one.
Some tracks I've heard seem to emphasize the harmonics up into the mid bass a lot more with saturation, which gives the illusion of more low end bass. The resulting bass sounds like it's higher than yours (if that makes sense), and has a warmer body to it. But that approach is hard to get right without it sounding too honky.
The processing. The right plugins + the unavoidable good synthesis. The right combination of the plugins that are affecting it and creating that “fat” sound shape.
@@EClipChannel So I guess you're saying there wasn't really any major change in your approach or technique, and that it was just a matter of persevering and trying a slew of different ideas and techniques you've already developed until you hit on a good one?
Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@hibouambigu2370 there was, the change was in the processing. Usually, I have a certain methodology of processing that I needed to change for C#, as the plugins I was using didn’t give the results I was seeking for.
I’m not mentioning plugins as I currently don’t recall which plugins I used for this bassline, I would need to dig a bit and see. Currently I’m not able to do so.
@@EClipChannel ahh ok!! Could be interesting to hear about some of those if you're working on ideas for new video topics. Could make a "dealing with super low bass notes" topic? Dunno! Going to check out your class by the way! Thanks for sharing your ideas.
@@hibouambigu2370 yes. Honestly, I’ve done so many bass videos. And for each outcome, I could make one. Rolling in low notes, glide, triplet, offbeat. I don’t want to sound harsh but that’s why I created Kick and Bass class. To explain one thing, it’s pulling 10 more questions/topics. That’s why it’s 7hr long as I gave my best to say everything someone should know about all from my perspective.
I wish as well that all of this is much easier, but we chose a pretty complicated genre to produce 😁
low c# to low and inaudible for many sound systems and the human ear , and c# one oct + weak bass and kick better keep in the middle around 40-55 hz
What do you mean inaduable? Why it would be inaudiable. Sorry but do you provlem hearing the bassline in the video? I believe you think about the first harmonic and it’s prety low possition on the freq spec. Saw waveform has many harmonics, 33.4hz firsth, 66.8hz second….
pro tip: if you use c# as a key, you can put the end of your kick to g# (perfect fifth)
That won’t help at all with perfectly aligning phases. Tonality and matching phases are two completely different thibgs.
@@EClipChannel don't having the same frequency with kick and bass but instead having a higher frequency for the kick (perfect fifth) gives you more room to play and when aligning it doesn't make as much problems as if the frequencys were the same, because they don't clash as much. i have great success with this technique, try it out :)
@@aidennymes6335kick is not a tonal element, kick is sinewave sweep through all frequencies, from 10-12-20khz to its end frequency. Setting the kick's end frequency to the frequency of a g# will not make the kick be tonal. So your theory of perfect 5th will not work in the case of kick and bass!
@@EClipChannel it's not about making it tonal but not having the kicks frequency be in the way of the harmonics of the bass. that way the kick ends right between the fundamental and the first harmonic of thr bass, where there is enough space for it and it doesn't interfere that much or at all.
@@aidennymes6335 your comments are confusing. Perfect 5th is all about tonality, and then you say it doesn’t have anything with tonality? If the kick is a bot tonal element, why would you put its frequency to the perfect fifth frequency? If you wish to avoid putting the kick on the same frequency as the first harmony of the bassline, then it could be any other frequency except the frequency of the bassline's first harmony! What makes you put the kick end frequency to the perfect fifth frequency?
There is no reason for doing that!
I’m sorry if I am about to sound rude, but this is one more example of people following certain rules that do not have any sense and following these rules will only push you away from some probable solution. Simply play around with the setting, without measuring anythibg untill you find what “SOUNDS” the best. It
