I never realized that the legacy Hornets were capable of this. I've seen the FA-18s numerous times at airshows and not once did I see them perform aerobatics like this. Kudos to the Finns for showing this jets long hidden potential.

That's because of two engines, two engines is always better and useful, not only in combat, to brought chicken at airshows....)), jokin' but Finish have in their ribs the Russians with SU-27/30, so, they have to flight like that, remember that.

    • @lebojay

Zak Jansen The moose tend to fly nap of the earth, making them hard targets.
Why do we have an airforce? Three reasons I expect:
      1. We have a couple dozen attack jets so we can contribute a token number of bombing sorties to any NATO effort.
      2. We need lots of cargo jets to for the support and logistics missions Canada often takes on. There’s more to an Air Force than attack and fighter jets; Canada does very well with the less glamorous air missions.
      3. We have to be able to intercept Russian planes coming over the Arctic. Even if that capability is never called on, a country has to be able to defend its own borders or it isn’t really a country.

    • @invertedv12powerhouse77

Filming of a planes full capabilities is actually not allowed i believe. We had 2 f18s do a mock dogfight above our cottage in quebec and anyone who hasnt seen a fighter jet pushed to the limit will be in awe.
The f18s are extremely capable. Even fully loaded. Remember canada doesnt even have the superhornet. Imagine that one

Nobody ever said the Hornet can't do this. The aircraft normally has software limitations on AOA and control deflection at certain angles and speeds. The whole point here is that the Finnish Demonstration Team disabled these "safety features" and put everything into the hands of the pilot. For a highly trained and experienced pilot this is fine in a sterile air show environment. In combat, it is nice to have the software keeping you from getting into trouble.

Also, Finn planes don't have to take the stresses of repeated daily carrier landings, so probably their airframe life requirements are much more relaxed.

Since one way to do your national service is to become a pro fighter pilot, Finnish Air Force has had every year tens of thousands of candidates from where to pick the best of the best. This was the recipe for success in WW2 and still stands unchanged today.
In WW2 The Soviet Strategical Air Force failed to destroy Helsinki, Soviet fighter pilots were far inferior with often better (American) equipment and at the same time 1/3 of Finnish pilots were Aces and still today Finland has the highest number of Aces per capita.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Blue Angels, but seeing a display that showcases the aircrafts potential instead of the pilot is where it's at.

When the US military noticed that the F16 and F17 where both capable aircraft they rightfully decided to build both. Why did the US not do the same with the F22 and F23?

Because contrary to public opinion the YF-23 has significant design flaws and would have required a near total redesign before it could have gone into production. The biggest problems were in the stacked weapon bays and the design of the aft section of the plane made thrust vectoring impossible. If a production model F-23A had ever been built it would have looked quite a bit different from the YF-23 prototype

The AF chose the F16 over the F17. When the Navy wanted a new fighter Congress told them to take the F17. It was modified to meet the NAVY requirements and renamed the F18.

I still have my old air force magazine here about the 2 acs, the F22 is far more maneuverable than the F23. The only consolation with the latter is its stealth - F23 has a small RCS.

I never quite understand why ground announcers attempt to compete with the noise generated during close passes. They need to allow the jet to be the centre of attention and provide short statements during the moments when the decibel level falls to an accetable level. Otherwise you are just wasting your breath!

Flares are allowed in the UK and are very common at some shows. However, RAF Fairford does not have a suitable area for the handling and loading of such material.
