    LEAD IN:
It's hard to imagine a world without teddy bears.
The Steiff German teddy bear is over 100 years old, and remains the most sought after and highly prized bear by collectors' worldwide.
    STORYLINE:
Today teddy bears come in all shapes, sizes and colours.
Unlike many modern teddy bear designs, early teddy bears were designed to look like real bears.
Highly collectable Steiff teddy bears still maintain the classic look.
The world renowned Steiff teddy bear company was founded in the early 1880's in the region Giengen-on-the-Brenz in Germany.
In the 1880's Margarete Steiff (confined to a wheelchair since childhood due to polio) made her first stuffed toy, a felt elephant for a friend.
Soon everyone seemed to want one of Margarete's felt animals, so a workshop was set up to cope with demand.
The family business employed five of Margarete's nephews, the most important one to us being Richard.
Richard Steiff had studied commercial art at Stuttgart.
