  • Discussion on evaluation and management of syncope.
Syncope is a transient loss of consciousness due to transient global cerebral hypoperfusion characterised by rapid onset, short duration and complete recovery. A less severe symptom is called near-syncope. Syncope may be preceded by warning symptoms like blurred vision, sweating or yawning. Syncope can occur at rest as in arrhythmic syncope or with exertion in severe aortic stenosis or after exertion in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. A much simpler cause is severe anemia. Syncope causes a lot of psychological trauma and limitation of activities of daily life, change of employment, restriction of driving etc.
