For many, the term "dumpster diving" evokes stomach-turning images of half-moldy rolls and recently-expired tuna salad snatched from the mouths of gnawing rats. But as many sophisticated urban survivalists know, there is an extraordinary amount of perfectly good, even gourmet, food set out every night in sanitary bags outside city delis, bakeries, restaurants, and supermarkets. The video above shows just how easy and clean the process of scoring great free food can be.

well, if you eat 20 dollars worth of food a day you save about 240 dollars every year if you do this every month. do it every other day, you save 3650 dollars every year. do it every day you save 7300.

I work at grocery store, and feel I should explain some of this. many times stuff like to yogurt will com in a pack that is damaged, aka one busted, and by law (at least in my state) we have to throw that out. Other times a customer will return something and for what ever reason we cant put in back on shelf or a customer left a cold item out somewhere in the store, again making it to where we havet throw it away. Lastly the sell by dates on the packages don't necessarily mean that the food is bad past that date, but again we have to throw it out cause it's the law. At least it means we get a free snack sometimes when pulling food.

Sarvesh Kumar if you are referring to the actual boxes, we sorta do. We crush and bail all cardboard then sell it to cardboard manufactures who make more boxes out of it
That sell by date thing is so crazy. LIke you go into a store and it says sell by September 10th and its an egg sandwich... so if I eat that egg sandwich on september 11th I'm gonna fucking die or get food poisoning? Its wild, I didnt realize how easy it is to do in NYC but never really thought of it. I'm gonna start looking at these garbages more often when I'm working in Manhattan from now on just to see how much shit gets thrown out.

That shit is real. I remember when I worked at Starbucks they used to try to make us do the same thing. Cakes, sandwiches, brownies, cookies and all kinda shit, TRASH. Perfectly good food just thrown away smmfh. I actually got in trouble for giving it to homeless people that hung around the store so I just started taking it with me when I left and giving it away in the neighborhood. Shit is just sad.

I remember this one time I had this part time job as a dishwasher in a Syrian fancy restaurant in Istanbul. I shit you not, there were thousands of pounds of leftovers plates and food that is so edible and untouched that you can't pack enough of it.

It really is, my mom's side of the family is from New York. I've never been there and I want visit so BAD! The whole foods markets in Boston are really generous with left over food. I volunteered with a group called student food rescue at Boston university and whole foods was by far our biggest supplier of bread, cakes, pastries etc. they were always happy to give to food pantries, sometimes 6 or more large trash bags full of fresh food, and they ended up feeding a lot of people in the Boston area!

Naldoking don't be scared to eat anything I have developed a very strong immune system due to myself not giving a fuck about expiry dates. Check organic food stores and farm markets they are very wasteful and provide me with nutrition and exotic organic foods. I am seventeen now and have overtime learned which locations are best to dumpster dive at in my area. If you have any pets go to pet stores they are by far the most wasteful people on the planet and love to throw out hundreds of pounds of high quality foods daily instead of donating it. Lastly, don't give a shit what others think. You will get much more if you don't care if people are watching you and continue to do your thing. Oh and if there is too much food for you to eat share it with others who need it or donate it. In the states they are more wasteful than Canada (where I live) so if you live there you are blessed with some damn good dumpsters, good luck

Probably was left out and contaminated, not kept cold while in the store. There are a number of temperature related, bacteria related recalls that force stores to cease the sale of a dangerous batch of food. That or the "Sell By" date can be why. If you're hungry then you're willing to take that risk.
