We'll learn what polyatomic ions are. Polyatomic ions are created when a number of atoms come to together to form a group, and then that group has either a positive or a negative charge, which means that it can be either a cation or an anion. We discuss how protons and electrons balance to give a net charge, and then discuss some common polyatomic ions.

    Tyler,
Im up to 1:24 in your video. I understand how you have added up the protons ( H=1x4 + N=7 = 11) however i thought that the number of protons mimics electrons so why is there only 10 electrons and not 11?

I think to find the number of electrons you have to add up the charges of each atom in the polyatomic ion and that will tell you how much more or less the electrons are compared to the protons. For example, for ammonium, there are 4 hydrogens each containing 1 proton. Four hydrogen= 4 protons. Then, nitrogen has 7 protons, and when u add it with with the hydrogens you get 11 protons. Now, to find the number of electrons for ammonium, you find the charge hydrogen and nitrogen in ammonium. Hydrogen each have 1+ charge, 4 hydrogens = 4+. Nitrogen has a charge of 3-. Add all of it and you get 1+. That means there is 1 more proton than electron. It's calculated that there are 11 protons. As a result, there will obviously be 10 electrons.
