DUDE. Thank you so much for this. I'm taking a college chemistry course (for the first time in 25 years) that used a mishmash of other RUclips videos that confused more than it helped. Your video solved the dilemma. Thanks so much!
Tyler, Im up to 1:24 in your video. I understand how you have added up the protons ( H=1x4 + N=7 = 11) however i thought that the number of protons mimics electrons so why is there only 10 electrons and not 11? Thanks Lee
The reason is because it is an ion, it has a charge, so protons and electrons don't equal each other. I made this video to address your question: ruclips.net/video/GyJBstOn4t4/видео.html
Tyler DeWitt Tyler, Thanks so much for replying to me you definitely solved my question . Just wondering how you made the video's you make i have to do one for an A&P assessment and would like to do something similar to yours? Thanks again Lee
+mmoore if there is like 5 to gain but 3 to loose obviously it will be easier to lose 3 than gain 5 😀but if you have like something that you have to gain 2 but loose 6 then it will be easier to lose 2
no. the protons and electrons are often different, which is what gives atoms a charge. watch my video called "What's an Ion?" for more information about this.
i know what an ion is, but you did not specify we started with any. You just combined 4 oxygen with a nitrogen so I assumed it was neutral atoms not ions. How was i to know you were using ions or why the electrons is different than protons
I've just seen three of your videos and I can tell you that I've learned more in these 30 min than I have in two months in my COLLEGE COURSE FOR CHEM! THANK YOU SO MUCH KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO!

Good morning, May I ask how did u count 32 electrons for the carbonate, as one atom of carbon contain 6 electrons, and 3 atoms of oxygen contain 24 electrons , the total is 30 not 32
@@germinbarakat5517 Im having the same problem. The ammonium should also have 11 electrons if i'm not wrong. 4 hydrogens = 4 electrons and one nitrogen = 7. I really dont get this
I spent 4 days 17 hours 49 minutes and 20 seconds trying to figure out the polyatomic ion’s charge on my own whiteout almost any knowledge about chemistry 👍🏻 You saved me from wasting more of my useless time 👍🏻
You're amazing!!! Every video is just spot on. I constantly have to do a small reminder of something in chem and it's so refreshing to just get a quick explanation and refresher!!!
I'm a student in 2019. I'm taking AP chem, but never took any science class before (weird schedule conflict with my school.) I think this channel will prevent me from failing this class. Thank you.
You should be a professor at a university and simply just play your videos during class. These videos are amazing And i learn more from the video than from the textbook!
u r the great. i have scored well in chemistry when i was in 10th grade. now i m in 12th and i still get lots and lots of benefit out of you. thanks for doing these jobs.
You are really amazing!! Please please make a tutorial about reactions, so far Synthesis reaction is the only one I can fully understand. From my experience, when the discussion is from you, I can briefly understand it not like when my chem teacher is the one teaching it. He's so serious and everything. And he also is always absent so what happens is that he can't briefly go through a topic.
at 2:34 why doesn’t carbonate have 30 electrons? because if oxygen ions are O and then the little 2 negative. so an oxygen ion would have 10 electrons? so 10 times 3 is 30. then for carbon, doesn’t the carbon ion have a charge of plus 4? so it would be 6+4. so it would be 40 electrons?
I pretty sure nobody is gonna answer my question at this time ... but I got a question from the video 2:41 I tried to make lewis structure for NH4 but I still couldn't understand how it has 10 electrons .... it has 5 outermost electrons of N and 4 electrons of H so it should be 9 I think.. I still don get how 10 electrons came out ... somebody teach me plz

In the ammonium ion, nitrogen has 7 electrons, and 4 hydrogens add 4 more, making 11 electrons total. Since it has a +1 charge, it loses 1 electron, leaving 10 electrons.

Thank you so much for these videos. You are an amazing teacher and I really found these easy and cool to understand. Thank you Tyler
I’m confused how do you get 10 electrons instead of 11?
I am also confused on how you calculated the 10 electrons.
Since Ammonium is an ion so its charge is 1+ meaning that it has 11 protons and 10 electrons.
In the ammonium ion, nitrogen has 7 electrons, and 4 hydrogens add 4 more, making 11 electrons total. Since it has a +1 charge, it loses 1 electron, leaving 10 electrons.
He said u can't just calculate it by yourself and the netcharges are constant for polyatomic ions so I guess the only option is memorizing it
