or too, you could contrast that with Dean's upbringing. he was socialized more with monsters than real people, so part of it could have also been not knowing how to act around people who'd revealed something so deep and personal, right out to him... I mean think about how Dean and Sam are constantly at odds bc they don't communicate. "You want to know what I confessed in there[in the church]" Sam says to Dean at the end of season 8, during the trials. "What my greatest sin was? It was how many times I let you down. I can't do that again."
... or think about how many times one of them is dying or in trouble and never wants to bother/trouble the other so they don't say anything. gosh, it's almost like Dean runs on secrets and suppressed emotions.
and come on, Dean's face in that scene where he's faces with the "Sam+Dean" cosplayers, wasn't disgust, it was shock. I honestly think it was shock that they were revealing that to him, or shock that they were playing him & his brother as a couple.

I've always used the argument that the angels don't exactly have genders and if Castiel would've gone into a female vessel instead, they would've been in a relationship immediately. We all know that's the truth.
It's not, though. If he'd been in a female vessel he'd have been killed off way earlier, just like Anna, because that's not what the show is about.

I think the reason Dean said "I need you" instead of "I love you" is because it is completely out of character. There is only one person Dean has said "I love you" to, and that's Mary. Dean says he loves people in other ways. I don't think it's because the writers think it's too gay. I think it's just because it's not something Dean would say at all. He hasn't even said it to Sam.

That's actully what Jenson said when someone asked him about it. He said that he changed the line because he didn't think Dean would just admit how he felt.
+S'chn T'gai Spock he never said it to Charlie. Charlie said it to him once and he said "I know." Jensen isn't homophobic. He has a lesbian aunt that he cares for very much. He's also actually very open with his sexuality, joking around with men (coworkers normally) all of the time on set. Also, there have been a few times where he's met with gay fans and treated them like everyone else, hugging them, taking pictures with them. He's not homophobic. He didn't say it because it's not in the dean mindset. Dean doesn't say he loves people.
Dude... It's Charlie. She said "I love you.", he said "I know.", they were quoting Star Wars. And just like Han Solo, Dean obviously meant "me too". And of course Jensen isn't homophobic, he changed that line to respect his character. Like someone said above, we only hear Dean say it once, and it's to his mom. His mom died and we know that left deep scars in him.
Also, as much as I love Destiel, if they want to stay true to the show, if we ever hear Dean say "I love you" to someone, it has to be Sam.

A man and a woman can snark at each other and people will gush about their chemistry and they'll be making out by the end of the season. A gay ship with 7 years of build-up, who have literally given up everything for each other, often share long, profound glances, have had so many parallels, and have had many emotional scenes and quotes I can't fit them on one piece of paper somehow can still be referred to as "Just close friends, you don't have to see gay in everything" by hetero-normative people.

+mfaerie32 yeah but there's the fact that "I love you" was scripted, as was the Colette parallel, Dean staying in purgatory to find Cas, the scenes where Sam had something with a girl and it was reflected with Dean and a guy (see: the wrestling episode), and when Dean flirts with/looks at a dude. Added in the obvious "John telling his son to be manly" plot, you've got a very likely closeted bi character. Cas also literally betrayed everything he'd believed in, for Dean, specifically. Even if they don't have a lot of chemistry in your opinion (which is your own and very valid to you), they definitely have more reason than most, and would be obviously considered romantic by mainstream viewers if the plot was reflected onto a straight couple. Really sorry for ranting, you do you.
One of the top comments here is that their relationship not turning canon is that person's villain origin story. Its November 2020 and destiel turning canon in the most homophobic way possible is my villain origin story

I’m not in the fandom nor have I been watching the show for years but the writers/show do have a long history now of queerbaiting and killing off specifically gay characters, which in itself if pretty homophobic, so I think its a much bigger situation than just this scene itself being “homophobic”. from what i’ve seen, most people have not been taking it all that seriously.

It's ridiculous how long the CW is dragging Destiel out. It's exactly like you said, if Cas (for example) had been a female, they would've been together a LONG time ago; and that's sad because there is so much chemistry between these two characters. So much so that even my boyfriend (who isn't a hardcore fan but watches for my sake) has even noticed that they act differently towards one another. I don't even need them to kiss, even if they just held hands or something I would be satisfied. I just want their love to be recognized.

I mean, I don't really ship anything in Supernatural and Dean has called Cas his best friend and brother so many times, I think people read too much into things (not to mention both Dean and Cas have only been with women) On a side note, I'm not against those who do ship it, I just think the show is fine without focusing on relationships (I don't really want any of them settling, would seem so out of character for them)

I love how people use the argument of Dean saying that "he doesn't swing that way" like a decade ago to argue he's straight, because Dean has already admitted to "lying professionally", and you can clearly see that in the show, like when he said he isn't disgusted by dirt/germs, yet see him make a face and be grossed out every time he encounters something dirty or gross, and when he insisted on only liking pie yet eating cake at some point (seriously? This analogy just writes itself), and recently hating on the cucumber water in 12x7 I think, then ending up drinking it himself by the end of the episode. All of these just show how Dean tries so hard to do what he thinks he's expected to do, even though it's not everything he truly wants to do. There's literally nothing in the show that suggests that he wasn't lying about being straight because he was closeted and internally biphobic. If you ask me, there's more evidence of him being possibly bi than of him being straight.

Before I even became a fan of the show, I thought they were canon. My friend would post destiel scenes and I would go “what a beautiful couple. I love this representation”. When I became a fan and found out they weren’t canon I was like “WHAT????????? HOW?????”

By literature rules and by the fact that SPN is following the 3-act-structure their endgame should be with each other but since so many storylines have been ignored on the show nothing is guaranteed. If we're talking parallels there was the "I was there, where were you" parallel that the writers didn't even try to disguise. That's why the show is so sly, they place beautiful evidence for their blooming love for anyone who would pick up on them, but when they don't follow through they can simply say we read it wrong.

I disagree. In his many, many years before he met dean, Castiel was lost in his own thoughts, suppressing his doubts and feelings. Trying his best to deny how miserable he was, serving heaven for millions of years, with no love, or fulfilment, and no end in sight.
But then he met Dean, and Dean taught Castiel how to have friendships, and how to love. How to choose your own path in life, how to choose what/who has value to you, and defend it with everything you have. Because of Dean, we’ve seen many occasions where Castiel genuinely smiles, and even laughs. He’s finally discovered who he is, and he’s happy with it.
When Castiel first laid a hand on Dean in hell, he was found.

Supernatural hurts my brain with the gay baiting. Let's all be real, if Dean was real, anyone with any kind of gaydar who's ever even interacted with a closeted person would assume he's gay, plus Castiel isn't even the only male character he comes off as a bit too close with. Legit, if Castiel(or Crowley) had been female, we not only would assume the same thing but the show obviously woulda, at least, had them hook up. Or maybe even for the first time". To me that sounded absolutely like a coming out to himself, because that's exactly what I was thinking when I was coming out to myself. That maybe I can act upon this, because maybe it's not wrong at all. To me Dean is 100% bi, because I could relate to him and his journey so much. In my opinion it won't do justice to his character to leave his bisexuality unconfirmed. They've hinted at it in and outside the show way too much for it to be discarded.
