I have a basket that looks like your floor basket. Do I wash it under the sink as well? TIA

Hi. Thanks for video. You didn’t mention, however, water temperature, color - dye issues- loss of color, lack of outside or a hose.
I have cleaned my baskets like that for years and they have always come out perfect. I buy mine at Goodwill and they are usually cheap. I like to use them for catchalls and storage. Having my TV controls in a cutie basket looks much nicer and makes them easier to find. Works great for magazines and stitching projects too.
Yay! I've actually thrown out wicker baskets that were dirty. Didn't realize we could completely wet wicker. The paint brush is a good one as well. Thank you so much.
Oh, I'm so glad you saw this then! It's perfectly okay to get it completely wet. The sun is the best way to dry it though because it will dry faster. I'm so happy this was helpful for you!
Thank You SO Much!!! I've been throwing out dirty Wicker for Years Thinking I couldn't get it wet!!! You have SAVED ME!! My MaMa passed away last year and has a Beautiful 3 Basket set that I've been moving closet to closet...Lol...So I wouldn't be tempted to throw it out!!! You Made My Day!!! Im Subscribed!!! Please keep making these Awesome Helpful Videos! Thank You so much for taking the time to explain things and share a story of your own!!👍👍👍👍👍
My wife passed 7 weeks ago and I'm finally getting around to cleaning up the house where she could not do it for quite some time. I've run into a problem she had wicker shaped like a hat with string hanging down from it and seashells tied to the string. Very pretty to look at but the Wicker is much finer by that I mean not as thick as what you showed in your example with the basket. How would I clean that? It is shaped like a a Chinese hat and also the shells have somewhat yellowed. Do you know what I should use to clean? I know this I know this question is a little awkward but I appreciate any help you can send me thank you
Hi Brian, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how much this must mean to you. I've never cleaned any wicker that is this delicate, but here's what I would do. You should still be able to wash it. You might try just using water first and possibly a mild soap, like Castile Soap, if necessary. I like Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap. It's mild, non-toxic and great for cleaning.
Here's a link if you can't find it at your local store. amzn.to/2ZdWl4l
I wouldn't put it outside to dry. Just put it on a towel inside to dry. I'd check it periodically during the drying process to see if you need to reshape it. Since it won't be in the sun, this probably won't be an issue but I'd keep an eye on it just in case.
I think you could use the Castile soap on the seashells too, but I've never tried this either. I have a friend who collects sea shells. I'll reach out to her to see if she has any tips for cleaning that part of your piece.
I hope this helps you! Let me know if there is any other way I can help with your cleaning process. If I don't know the answer to your questions, I'll try to find out for you.
I forgot to say that Castile soap is concentrated so you probably won't need much of it. You could try using a soft toothbrush with the Castile soap for scrubbing.
Hello again, Brian. I just reached out to my friend who collects seashells. She said that she uses Hydrogen Peroxide to clean hers and it works great.
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi thank you for getting back in touch with me. I took your advice and the wicker turned out well. Just dried on towel in house. Had to scrub shells with toothbrush. Took some time but I know she would have loved the results. Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this.
I'm sorry for the loss of your dear wife. I hope you are doing a little better these days. I lost both my parents last year and am still struggling with this loss as I was especially close to my Dad. He was always my rock here on earth for my whole life, no matter what was going on in my world. God is my heavenly Rock, but dealing with these losses has been very difficult.
Thank you so much! I just bought a used wicker bookshelf that needed some serious cleaning and I am so excited to clean it now that I know it’s this easy!
That wicker tray is a total score! That's how I clean my thrifted baskets too.
I know!! Can you believe it was only $3?!! 😍It's so easy to clean it this way. Only take a few minutes and you're done! My favorite kind of cleaning, quick and easy!!
Been washing my baskets for thirty years! As for cleaning baskets without getting them wet, the brush is a good idea, but I also use my vacuum with the brush attachment to suck up the dust! Better than just brushing it!
Hey Marylou! Me too! I’ve always known about washing wicker because my parents used to do it. I just assumed everyone knew you could do that. Using the vacuum with the brush attachment is a great idea! I’ll try that next time I clean my baskets. Thanks!! Have a wonderful day! 😊
This is such a great tip! Love the paint brush technique. Perfect for getting in those small spaces!

That's perfect! I recently cleaned out my childhood room after moving back home from college, but I was stumped on how to clean the very dusty basket that held my CDs. I tried wiping it down but the cloth just couldn't get into those crevices, so I've had a had a clean room and a not so clean basket. ^-^; The paintbrush trick is perfect for me though, since I've got lots of those laying around! Thank you for sharing Kristi!

Thank you! Found two lovely wicker baskets and was in a quandary as to how to clean them. This was very helpful. 👍🔥
You’re welcome! I’m so happy this was helpful for you! Happy Holidays!
I haven't read the comments below, so I apologize if someone else mentioned my tips. I recommend putting the dirty baskets if you decide to wash in the bathtub while kneeling beside it. When using a brush it keeps the spatter in the tub instead of the splatters of the brush gets away from you all over the sink area. I also recommend taking your electric sweeper with the brush attachment to remove dust in the cracks a crevices of the basket. This way the dust goes into the vacuum cleaners dust compartment. ❤
With a smaller painting brush you can dust corners and angles and things around the house that are hard to clean, like frame corners or statues, small things, chandeliers, literally everything that you find it difficult to dust with a cloth. I learned this trick from an old woman. It's so easy and lifesaving!
I know! I use a small paint brush for so many things. Even around our bathtub sometimes because it's made from stone and not a flat surface that can be easily wiped down. It does make cleaning so much easier!!!
Just found a huge wicker basket at thrift and didn’t know how to clean it. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the tip this is so helpful
Thank you soo much!! This was very helpful!!!!
You’re welcome, Oksana! I’m glad you found this helpful. 😊💕
Nice Tops. ALSO: Repel dust mites by spraying them with vinegar and tea tree or other anti dust mite oil: 20 drops of oil, four tablespoons of vinegar and a cup of water.
Omg this was so helpful 🥰
Yay! I’m so happy this was helpful for you, Dashawn! 🥰
I always thought that wicker would stink if I washed it down with soap and water, so thank you for the tip. I am going to give my wicker a good cleaning now !!
It seems like it would, but it ends up smelling fresh. I’m glad you know about this now. Happy cleaning! ❤️

Hi thanks for your video. I wonder if you know if varnish is food safe to put over a wicker fruit basket ?
Thanks for video.Do you have any Longaberger baskets you clean the same way. I just purchased over 70 baskets and they are very dusty been in the attic for years a little brush wouldn't work.
Thanks

Hi new to your channel. Thank you so much. I never knew this. Very helpful 😊
I had heard years ago that getting wicker wet was the best way to clean it and also keep it tightly woven. Thanks, Kristi!
I've heard that about keeping it tightly woven. Interesting! Thanks! 🙂
Kriisti, do you have any recommendation on how to clean burn black wicker?..I recovered a friend wicker bathroom toiltries tower from her burned bathroom.. The basket are not burned but black smoke covers most all the wicker on the tower. I would like to restore this pieces because is a beautiful piece but I need to help on how to remove the black and I need to paint it what should i use.? Thanks Joe
Omg this is how I’ve always done it
Hello. I have rattan chargers that I bought years ago and they were light when I bought them, but have darkened with age. Is there anything I can do to lighten them up again?
I have always taken my wicker outdoors and spray with water hose, heard the moisture is also good for it
Hey Mary! It makes sense that the water is good for wicker. Getting it wet periodically probably helps it from drying out. TFW and have a wonderful day!
Not too much water because it can mildew. But water periodically can be good, misting. Even putting a humidifier in the room with the wicker.
Wicker/rattan furniture normally gets oiled to help it stay moist.
But also not all wicker is made from natural fibers. Wicker just refers to the weaving process and there are synthetic fibers, plastic, used to make some wicker products. So I'm pretty sure if it's a synthetic wicker basket it wouldn't need to be watered.
Thanks for the tips, would have liked to get to the tips quicker. Thanks again
I have a Basket something like yours and it got bent during moving any tips on how to get it's shape back. Thanks for sharing
@AL Smith thanks doll
Thank you so much
You’re welcome, Crystal! I’m glad this was helpful for you. Have a wonderful day! ❤️
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi Thank you. You also have a good day
Thanks, I have wicker chairs that my cats threw up on so I will try this method.
You’re welcome! I’m glad this was helpful for you. ☺️
Do you have any tips for preserving the wicker that isn't paint
Kristi- Thanks for the tips. I just acquired a vintage , painted wicker storage piece. I was thinking maybe just hose it off with water and let it dry . Maybe use a blow dryer to speed up the process?I don't want to scrub it cause it will mess up the paint!. What do ya think?
Hi! Yes, hosing it down and letting it dry is a good plan. I’m not sure about the hair dryer. We’ve always let these type of pieces air dry. You might want to watch it if it’s in the sun to make sure it’s keeping its shape. That’s more of an issue with smaller pieces like baskets though. Enjoy your wicker! 💕
Great tips kristi! Love the paint brush tip I will be using that for sure! 💕💕
Thanks, Jessica! Glad you liked the paint brush tip. It's the quickest way I know and it works great!
Like you, I take my wicker outside and spray it with water to remove the worst of the dust and dirt. If I am keeping the wicker “natural”, rather than painting it, I then take a strong tea solution and a paintbrush, and paint the solution all over the wicker, inside and out. This cleans and strengthens the colour of the wicker.
That's a great idea! I can see how that would work to enhance the color of the wicker. Thanks for sharing that great tip!!
I do the same thing to clean grape vine wreaths after taking old decor off.
Hi Kim! That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing it! 💕
thanks for the help! i thought water and soap may ruin the picnic basket i got from a thrift shop.
I didn’t know you could hose it down or even really wet it that much or put soap on it. I thought it would ruin it . I bought one at thrift store the other day and spent like a whole container of Disinfecting wipes cleaning it. Now I know I can just soap and water it thanks
Rewatching some of your videos. Hope all is well.
Hey Ellie! It’s great to hear from you! I apologize for my delayed response. We were on a trip to Oregon to pick up a new puppy. We are well. Just have had a lot going on. I’m planning to get back to filming this week. Thanks for watching again and checking up on me! 💗
Thank you, just what I needed. I also subscribed, but issues with the bell, wouldn't let me apply it.
Hey Veronica! I’m glad this helped you! Welcome to our community. I’m thrilled to have you join us! I’m sorry about the bell issues. Maybe you’ll be able to turn it on later. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
Inspired Living with Kristi , thank you. You too.
Thanks, Veronica!
QUESTION: How can I get the shine off my basket? The basket is coated in a shiny layer probably to protect it but I would like it to have a more natural look.
Hi Hope! I’ve never done this before, but I think some light sanding might do the trick. I’d try sanding a small spot on the bottom to see if works first. Hope this helps you! Tfw and have a wonderful weekend! ❤️
It’s winter and it’s pouring every day where I live. I don’t want the baskets to mildew. Would it damage them to dry them in the dishwasher?
Hi Lily, I apologize for my delayed response. I wouldn’t put it in the dishwasher. You can just lay it out to dry somewhere inside. It you have a fireplace, you could put it somewhere close to the heat. Good luck with your baskets!
So I bought this Vintage rattan/wicker garbage can on ebay last week and today it arrived with some weird, dark sticky thing(old gum maybe? I really don't know what it is honestly)at the bottom of it(it's so GROSS!). Because I paid quite a bit for what I now think someone probably found at Goodwill/garage sale for a few bucks(I was charged $45), I feel like they could've at least cleaned it or not charged so much for it if they weren't willing to clean it, it's just nasty. I would never have bought it if I knew about it before. And as a seller, I would never have sold something like that to someone else that way. Anyway, my question is: how do you get mysterious sticky stuff out of rattan/wicker? Do you think I could try Goo Gone or would that cause damage?
Any advice is appreciated.
I guess if I’m gonna keep Thrifting them...I better figure best way! TFS
LOL! Yes, this is easy for sure! 💕
So you top is to wash in the sink?
I bought some pretty old pieces and I wanted to put oil on them to give them a nice shine after cleaning them. what type of oil do you recommend? a regular oil a spray oil or what type? thank you so much for this video
Hi Pzilla! I'm glad you found this helpful. To protect your pieces after you've cleaned them, you can use furniture polish. I recommend making your own so it's non-toxic. Here's an easy recipe for you.
1 c olive oil
1/4 c white vinegar
4-5 drops lemon essential oil (optional)
Mix in a spray bottle and spray it evenly onto your wicker.
Hope this helps! TFW and have a wonderful weekend!
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi THANK YOU! On the way to the store Now!
Great! I’m happy I could help. 😊
Amen
We bought little basket from a restaurant. They feel sticky. How do you clean it.
Can you get indoor wicker wet? I have a bedroom set that I want to clean up and paint, and I'm not sure how to go about it.
Hey Maggie! Yes, you can wet indoor wicker too. Just make sure if it's something that can lose shape that you keep reshaping it when it's out in the sun. Or just leave it out in the sun for a little bit and move it to the shade to finish drying. I hope this helps you. Hope you have a wonderful day! 💕
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi Thank you. Update: I have done one of the mirrors now, and I have painted it successfully.
That’s awesome! I’m so happy this helped you. 😊
Have been cleaning my Wicker like that for year's.There is another tip.Yes, Wicker does dry really fast outside, BUT, after they are wet, make sure the Wicker is not bent or uneven anywhere, because, it will stay in that shape.I find that it's better to not let Wicker be in the "direct" sunlight,🌞 because it will fade, as well.
Hey Kiki! Great tips about them being wet and the direct sunlight!!! Thanks for letting us all know!! Have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks Mam! Need one more help How to clean wood sofa?
You’re welcome. Hmm, beyond using a damp cloth and furniture polish I’m not really sure about that one. I’ll do some research and see if I can find any good ideas.
It would be nice to see specifics of what you use. It’s told to us but pictures and names would be awesome. Right now I’m wondering what kind of soap and brush. If more than one kind of soap can be used. If a certain soap is off limits. Such like that.
A drop of Dawn dish washing liquid in a spray bottle works great. If the basket was in a "Smoker's " house you may need to use simple green and let it air out in the sun.
Mine is a bedside table, it have metal for the structure, will washing it making it rust? Thanks
Hi C Yie, I'm not positive about the metal but here's what I'd try. I'd go ahead and wash it and then immediately towel dry the metal and any wicker that touches the metal. Then I'd set it outside to finish drying the wicker. I think if you don't keep it underwater too long it probably won't rust. If you are really worried about the base rusting, you can just get a very wet cloth and use it to wipe down the wicker as good as possible. I hope this helps!
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi thank you for responding❤️❤️
C Yie You’re welcome! 💕
Great video 👍 I didn't realise you could wash them, so washed some wicker baskets and they're good as new, thank you 👋👋👋👋👋 Now thinking of painting them, any tips?
Yay!! 🤗 I’m so happy this helped you! Spray paint works great on wicker because you can get in the creases easily. I painted the wicker tray in the video white and it looks great. Just be patient with it. It’ll take several coats because the wicker will soak up the paint. Good luck! 💕
@@InspiredLivingwithKristi thank you 😘 these two little baskets had been tucked away unused and I was going to throw them out but, after I saw your video 👍 I got them out and gave them a scrub to do both of them up, they may look ok painted white with ribbons 🤔
You’re welcome, Susan! I think you’ll be pleased with them. I love my tray painted white. If you can, tag me on Instagram with a picture when you’re finished. I’d love to see them! 😊 I’m @inspiredlivingwithkristi

Love your shirt and this was helpful ❤
Wicker/rattan furniture should get oiled to help it from drying out. Also helps restore the color/finish.
Can wicker baskets be oiled? Should they be?
Great question! Yes, you can and should oil wicker baskets occasionally.
What type of oil do you use for wicker baskets?
Does spraying wicker with cutting board oil restore it.
Hi Brandon, that’s a great question! I’m not sure but it would be worth a try. It seems like it might help. I’d test it on a spot that’s not too obvious before treating the entire piece. If you try it, please come back and let us know how it goes.
I washed one of mine and red colour came out.? Help
I just broke a raw egg into a wicker basket. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to clean it? Thanks
Wouldn't it warp the wood? You been doing it for years though
