I can't believe the very first question. Garnt is right, ALL art can make you more intelligent. Just because most people just watch to turn their brain off doesn't mean it invalidates it. I learned about Ainu through Golden Kamuy for example, something I knew nothing about before. Avatar literally made me reevaluate my spirituality and morals.
THANK YOU. Someone with a brain. Connor basically dodged the question with that same argument and was like "Well, ignoring the 'can' of the question (which literally changes the question), I think no."
And, if you're a writer or an artist, watching anime can teach you a lot about animation, writing, artistic expression and all that. Becoming "smarter" isn't just about learning about other fields, learning more about the media of animation will make you smarter in relation to that topic. Also, like Garnt said, thinking critically is a skill that you can learn and improve by watching anime too
If you have even half of a brain, you tend to think about the media you just watched right? Like watching Evangelion makes you think "huh, being angsty and indecisive like Shinji sucks" or watching spice&wolf and going "oh yeah, I suppose that's how basic economics work" and you become better at bartering. Many other shows pose interesting morality situations and could get you thinking about how you'd act when put in that place. You learn about yourself mostly, and art doesn't tend to teach you things explicitly.
I disagree. I think it's a huge cope by people to justify watching anime. Yes, you can learn something from anime but you can learn something from almost anything. On top of that learning something =/= being smarter. Heck learning something wrong would actually make you dumber (which is the case when so many people learn wrong things about Japan from anime ). Your brain does not always have to consume things. A few hours of self reflection and sitting alone would do so many people better than always being distracted with shows. Not to mention anime is one of the shallowest media I have ever consumed and I say that as a Japanese. If you get into books or talking with people or travelling or even just thinking alone, you will realize that life itself has so much more depth and things to explore and learn. The most intelligent or deepest thing I have ever consumed related to anime might be vagabond or berserker and one of those manga is based on a book. 100% especially since the question was "Anime CAN make you smarter" I would think the default/automatic response would be somewhat agree, because yes it CAN, it just might not in a lot of cases
Agreed. I expected Garnt to dive into that, but he argued learning about Japanese culture instead- which is a weaker argument tbh lol. Any media and art can develop our emotional intelligence greatly than without it.
Also depends on the person. Some people, when they interact with art, completely turn their brains off and aren't interested in engaging with it in a deeper level - be it emotional or intellectual. Media literacy is at all-time low, and no media, no matter how well-crafted it was, can help someone who lacks the resources to approach it the way it yearns to be.

I absolutely love their friendship. I strive to be this close to any friend who's interested in my personality and weird takes. I'm just so introverted that I'm my own worst enemy. But anyway, I hope Trash Taste realizes what they have. Amazing friendship and family, that's very rare to find in today's world. Love you guys!
I feel like Q3 was kind of a given , the position they're in now is what everyone has dreamed of having. Not just the fame or money, but the rate of success and experiences they've had throughout their adult life. It's been nothing but great opportunities to so many fascinating places and meet amazing people in countries around the world, especially since the start of trash taste. So yeah, why would you change things in the past to create another path were you don't have the money or success that you have already?
Yea i agree but also looking at life of someone below I would say yes to change my life to make it better and for my family as well, so I would say neutral
I've only watched 40 minutes of this episode so far and it's making me feel depressed. The question about school and the question about going back to your past mainly. I've suffered so much bullying as a teen during school and I only found out I had severe ADHD last year, so I suffer from repressed memories as a 29 y/o. I don't remember a lot of my childhood and teenage years, and not even my early adulthood clearly because of that, I've been so emptied mentally for most of my teens and early adulthood that I went autopilot for so, SO long, and just hearing people having good memories about their earlier years makes me feel bad about myself. This episode is being hard to listen to while I work, but I feel like it's a duty to myself to think about where I am now and all I've been through compared to three dudes I have a weird parasocial friendship with.
Hey buddy, I'm at the same boat and well, I'm just about to complete university and my school life was so dogcrap that I suffered from severe impostor syndrome and severe bullying. I had the unfortunate luck of dealing with an abusive parent in an Asian country, so well, things didn't go well, I was depressed for so long and the fact that no matter how I want to change my decisions, the fact I'll have to relive my nightmares and my darkest times is a cost I'm not willing to pay. Anyways, TL;DR, you're still at your prime man, I know it's easy for me to just say "You've got your whole life ahead of you. And don't think of the past". But life rarely goes that way, so hope you are doing okay now, buddy.

On what Connor said at 1:17:15 about social media, "if it was really that bad for us, why would we all participate," I'd just like to chime in here that just because you do something doesn't mean it isn't bad for you. People do stuff that's bad for them all the time because a lot of the time, there's an impulse to do it. Social media is no different, they operate on algorithms that are designed to take in information about what you engage with and feed you more of it in a way that can game your brain's reward pathways and really fuck it up, depending on your level of exposure. Completely agree with Joe RoGarnt on this one. I do think Connor makes a great and interesting point about bad journalism being a problem before social media, and the internet allowing a more even playing field, but honestly I feel like that evening of the playing field is down to the internet itself rather than social media specifically. If anything, I find that social media tends to be a counter to fact-checking since if someone sees an article with tons of likes and comments affirming it, they are less likely to fact-check than if they see one with no indication of engagement. The reality is that most people simply do not check their news or sources because they do not have the time and (probably) want to lean in to their bias. Social media enables the worst of human instincts. I think if we all just kept 1-1 chat (and maybe allowed groups of up to a few people) and got rid of the rest, the world would be better off for it. Yes humans have always found ways of spreading negativity and misinformation, but to me that's kinda like the argument that gun control doesn't work because the perp would just use a knife. Like, yeah maybe, but one person can do a lot more damage with a gun than a knife. And that's not even getting into the prevalence of loneliness and parasocial relationships, as well as the business that have sprung up to prey on vulnerable people.
The people who don't want to go back in time to change things don't want to lose what they have in the present and don't want to change their way of life, but if your life is crap they'd go back in time in a heartbeat.

I'd personally be on the side of the Gaming Industry was better years ago than it is nowadays. They released full games, no paid dlc bs, no half-baked games, no gacha, etc. There used to be a passion for the games they made and the communities they fostered. Now, it's all about rushing the devs as much as possible to be greedy as fuck. I should not have to pay $70 for an unfinished game. I hate that everyone has collectively accepted and normalized this half-assing from game companies. I hope Baldur's Gate 3 can wake some people up to what kind of games we should be presented with in the 2020's.
Now that i think about it i never withnessed an end of a podcast, i have been watching trash taste from episode 2 for 3 years now, and i am 22, so it is a big chunk of my life, i was still in uni when it started and my friday routine somewhat revolves around it, and i cant imagine not having it, that would most likely be very sad
Garnt's argument for why anime can sometimes make you smarter regarding how funs understand and disect an anime was so on point, the best example of this from recent memory being Luffy's Gear 5. The shonen hungry brainlets hated it vs the fans willing the realise how fitting it was was a really good way to demonstrate that divide
These guys built a career from anime and they can still be weirdly ashamed from it. Like ye it's anime but it can still be informative admitting that doesn't make you a degenerate.
Btw "GOOD TASTE" is a name of a fastfood chain in the Philippines where it is love by many for it's affordable and big servings with really good tasting food for its value.
This was by far the best After Dark ever. This was just all based takes. The biggest problem with this episode is that they didn't specify which type of isakei you came back from makes the show valid for continuation. Like if Joey came back as a vending machine, should trash taste continue? Seriously though, all the takes were so grounded and realistic. Loved it.
Yeah, me too! Back when anime was obscure, the only way I'd know who was an anime fan were the people who'd run like Naruto or try being expressive like the characters (Ex: Flailing their arms when talking). It was funny and I miss that!

Connor was the one that pointed out the word "can", and how that word alone does all the heavy lifting, and should therefore be ignored, as it clearly wasn't the intent of the question. Even he argued his entire point while openly ignoring the word "can". Stop trying to make it some sort of anti-joey thing. You're free to not like someone, but at least be consistent with your hate.

Nah, they’re crazy. You can say there was a lot of crunch and bad conditions in the gaming industry, but a lot of people were passionate in making the games fun. Most of the developers were GAMERS. They wanted to make sure their games were ready, fun to play, and send out. Some stayed up to work because it was their PASSION. Nowadays, most people making games hate video games or are genuinely trying to make easy money.
I like how @1:24:56 Garnt and Connor are sharing serious opinions about the responsibility of social media companies in influencing people and the patterns of toxicity online but the chat just starts going crazy due to a "jump scare" that happened during the broadcast

The biggest misconception in the world is thinking media isn't a factor in a shaping person's thought process. The impact of media can't be underestimated. It can make you dumber, like Joey and Connor seems to lean onto, but that's falling into the black-and-white fallacy and thinking it can't also make you smarter, which is more allign with the spirit of the question.
Personally, I would honestly pick a GBA game over a PS5 or Switch game. Pokemon Emerald has withstood the test of time and Megaman Battle Network 6 is one of my favorite games. They are both in my 3x3 Video games
If you ever watched Yakitate Japan then you'd probably have a stock knowledge of random trivia. I mean there's no episode that you don't learn anything, there's also always the seed of knowledge segments after the end of every episode. Did you know that you couldn't get anaphylaxis from goats milk? I didn't. I learned it there. But still, double checking helps. So whatever it is you learn especially in anime double check it.
I feel like that isekai question was unfortunate. They should have taken it literally as if they passed out one day, and the next day started to act completely different and talking to a system

on topic 9, i think video games have the potential to be more interesting than anime / tv shows because it's an interactive medium, there can be non-linearity, different play-styles or side content you missed previously can give you new experiences that other media can't, and you could even have an effect on the story where there are multiple endings and/or story lines.

Our definition of ‘pretentious’ is so diluted now. This comment was possibly a reflection of that lol
The bois always cure my after school socializing mental anguish. Thanks for making the world feel better after a long academic day

“I like being railroaded”
-Garnt, 2023
9:00 I think a lot of niche anime can grow interest in new things through plot and story.
I legit learned several drinks from reading “Bartender”. Some stuff was wrong, but it made me research a lot of things.
100% especially since the question was "Anime CAN make you smarter" I would think the default/automatic response would be somewhat agree, because yes it CAN, it just might not in a lot of cases
any sort of media can make you smarter tbh
only thing that will make you lose iq is if you read tweets or something
I think anime can make you emotionally smarter
Agreed. I expected Garnt to dive into that, but he argued learning about Japanese culture instead- which is a weaker argument tbh lol. Any media and art can develop our emotional intelligence greatly than without it.
True, rent a girlfriend, wonder egg project and Darling in the franxx increased my tolerance for cringe and disappointment.
Agree, GTO, gintama, and silence voice and Violet is really good and help me understand myself more
@@cyan_oxy6734LMAO
Vinland Saga make me want to be a better and kinder person
Such a thoughtful and deep episode, really loving this one! 🥰
Went to the Dublin Live Show yesterday and had a great time. Glad I got to see you guys live!
Garnt misses being the age when he was at school but not actually being in school
I think consuming any piece of media can make you smarter, it just depends on the type you consume
I'll always be grateful to those indian tutorial videos that were better than most of my teachers and professors
yeah but most people consume it as entertaiment not something to learn from and implement in life
Also depends on the person. Some people, when they interact with art, completely turn their brains off and aren't interested in engaging with it in a deeper level - be it emotional or intellectual. Media literacy is at all-time low, and no media, no matter how well-crafted it was, can help someone who lacks the resources to approach it the way it yearns to be.
you: any, but depends on the type
huh
@@okapibibi then its not the medias fault, its the persons fault, if you really cannot learn anything after putting 100s if not tens of thousands of hours of your life into something then you are actually stupid beyond redemption.
That hit me in the soul :(
real
@@JarlBalgruff_ Hey dude, thank you for your words. It means a lot to me and yes, I always rest assured it gets better, day by day. The future tends to be better than the past.
Its interesting, as someone who went through it and Like 80% of my school Life has been sh*tty but i Had a few very good years after moving and changing Schools, so i basically can relate to both, the Fond memories of the Last couple of years at school but the Bad memories are really so Bad that i would never be able to say i Miss it so i picked neutral for that one as well lol and for the time travel...i would try to Change Something that couldve saved the Life of my mom😢so yeah i guess the Boys didnt have that much Trauma, garnt kinda Had the best answers There. You guys are Not alone with Trauma/Bad stuff Happening and Life getting better after school❤

Bread aside, Garnt seems to most consistently have good takes in comparison to the other two.
He's older, and more mature. I'd imagine that monk training helped in his character arc and how he views the world.
5:15 is always a blast to rewind to
Nobody still has told Connor that leaving his marker uncapped for a long time dries it out.
The vod is finally up, nice!
my actual favourite part of the livestream the past vods were part of
The people who don't want to go back in time to change things don't want to lose what they have in the present and don't want to change their way of life, but if your life is crap they'd go back in time in a heartbeat.
This is my favourite trash taste episode so far, main channel and after dark both included. I really enjoy the boys talking about goofy stuff but them having a serious conversation hits different for some reason. Really enjoyed it.

That final question is so real. I fairly recently started actively using twitter and got to really toxic topics. It wasn't until a major event happened in my life (my dog passed away) until I realized it was all stupid and stopped using it after deleting recent posts and I plan on going and deleting even more
I think watching anime can make you smarter. it's art and it can make you think more deeply about what you're consuming. I think that takes some intelligence
Yea i would say it develops are emotions intelligent specially as kids

I'd personally be on the side of the Gaming Industry was better years ago than it is nowadays. They released full games, no paid dlc bs, no half-baked games, no gacha, etc. There used to be a passion for the games they made and the communities they fostered. Now, it's all about rushing the devs as much as possible to be greedy as fuck. I should not have to pay $70 for an unfinished game. I hate that everyone has collectively accepted and normalized this half-assing from game companies. I hope Baldur's Gate 3 can wake some people up to what kind of games we should be presented with in the 2020's.
22:01 I didn't expect to get a philosophical lesson from Conner...
"I learned alot about economics from spice and wolf" "Does it make me smarter in economics? No."

These guys built a career from anime and they can still be weirdly ashamed from it. Like ye it's anime but it can still be informative admitting that doesn't make you a degenerate.

The first special would be "We tried to go to an elf brothel and failed !"

Trash taste special idea right here
I like this middle ground approach
Btw "GOOD TASTE" is a name of a fastfood chain in the Philippines where it is love by many for it's affordable and big servings with really good tasting food for its value.

@pancakedroid i do like thrombocytes, ill give them that.
Loved it.
now i low key want to watch a episode with a sword, a slime and a vending machine.
"I will watch Trash Taste for fun while doing the dishes" says me, before the first question makes me rethink the way I view anime.
I miss when anime wasn’t maninstream only because of how many creepers it made.
Yeah, me too! Back when anime was obscure, the only way I'd know who was an anime fan were the people who'd run like Naruto or try being expressive like the characters (Ex: Flailing their arms when talking). It was funny and I miss that!
Trash Taste isnt an anime podcast. Strongly Agree
Loved this format! Would have loved it if they had polled chat though. Also, it would have been interesting if they had responded all the statements first, then discussed, then put new ratings and see if their discussion changed their views at all. Probably the psychologist in me talking tho xd
Probably one of my favorite after dark streams
This Episode got effing real
The question was CAN.. not, WILL EVERYONE.. Joey keeps arguing against his own answer. lol
He really loves being pretentious
Connor was the one that pointed out the word "can", and how that word alone does all the heavy lifting, and should therefore be ignored, as it clearly wasn't the intent of the question. Even he argued his entire point while openly ignoring the word "can". Stop trying to make it some sort of anti-joey thing. You're free to not like someone, but at least be consistent with your hate.
@@moistman3110 Its not an anti joey thing lol. If anything Im biased towards him because Im also Australian.. Im sure he'll be happy you came to white knight him in the comments though..
Unsurprisingly great game format for three boys with a podcast, they love dispensing their takes and we love hearing them. Ironically Q6 made my respect for them increase, it's nice to know they're very aware of how lucky and privileged they are, rich people are so often the worst people ever that it's nice to know there are some decent rich people out there like the boys.
I always love the videos creators do where they get real and genuine. They are a dime a dozen "peak behind the curtain" that I always welcome.
thank you for those hidden memories of mini clips haven't heard mini clip in a hot minute
If I could go back in time, Id spend even more time with my dogs that passed away. More days focused on them.
Most chill episode in awhile. I expected hot debates. Almost like they were about to be isekai'd. 😂 emotional episode isnt trashtaste style but i'm loving it!
21:16 I know Joey meant it as a joke, but I had two degrees of separation from Steve Irwin. Based on the rules laid out, I could see myself going back, getting my connection to meet Steve directly and encourage him to be wary and wear protection around stingrays.
I respect Nabi pulling out the teacher voice here.

They are both in my 3x3 Video games
catching TT as soon as it come out - I feel like i just won a prize. yay!!

So whatever it is you learn especially in anime double check it.
whoa whoa whoa connor said ET 20 years ago?? bruh HALO WAS 20-15 YEARS AGO, CHILD I SWEAR!!!
I feel like that isekai question was unfortunate. They should have taken it literally as if they passed out one day, and the next day started to act completely different and talking to a system
that third question hit hard dude
8:06 "I learned alot about economics, but does that make me smarter about economics? No"
I don’t really watch Trash Taste or their own respective channel (except Connor) anymore, but I forgot how smart of a speaker Garnt is. He goes so into depth of topics and explains things so thoroughly and is a super understanding person.
i am so happy that i never got into social media
Thx for the Dublin show!! ❤❤❤
I thought Joey and Connor were a bit ignorant on the social media argument but I do appreciate when the boys get deep
What are they ignorant about?
@@ez_is_bloo I think the original comment is thinking about how joey and connor seem to only focus on the positive aspects of social media; if you genuinely listen to their arguments and their response to garnt, they do seem to understand that social media has positives and negatives and it all depends on how you use it.
No fear is not respect! And fear is bad!
I'll take a quick moment to appreciate Connor's Hamster joke ... thank you
on topic 9, i think video games have the potential to be more interesting than anime / tv shows because it's an interactive medium, there can be non-linearity, different play-styles or side content you missed previously can give you new experiences that other media can't, and you could even have an effect on the story where there are multiple endings and/or story lines.
Yea just imagening VR and AR
Just finished the episode while on the way to trash taste live in Berlin and I have to say I'm so fucking hyped! Thanks guys for finally comming to germany!
I find their definition of social media really delusional

"If a Trash Taste member got isekai'd would we continue Trash Taste?"
Just substitute him with Chris. Problem solved. 😂
He has his own podcast though, gotta save some topics.
Baffling how people believe there are objectively right and wrong takes to these open ended questions. There are just takes that you, as an individual, agree with and disagree with. Nobody's opinion invalidates or matters more than anybody else's opinion in this context.
1:18:13 these answers piss me off. I swear Garnt is the only one who's still somewhat grounded.
