I used to think I hated rap. Turns out I just hated hip hop culture... Guys flexing about sex, money, and drugs.
BTS does it right.

Just a note that not all of hip hop culture is like that... don't get me wrong a LOT of it is, especially these days, but it didn't start like that and there's a lot beneath the surface. BTS themselves make a big effort to talk about how much they love (authentic) hip hop culture and care about its roots. Newer ARMY should make sure to listen to their song 'Hip Hop Lover' and think about all the times they've expressed how deeply important hip hop is to them, and chosen to shout out and collaborate with hip hop artists. It's just good to be careful because occasionally some fans end up leaning into a narrative the boys themselves definitely don't support, like saying "those American (black) rappers are all nasty criminals, BTS are the only ones making good music with good values" when they actually know very little about hip hop culture, music or history. Not saying you were doing that, it's just something I think ARMY need to be more aware about in general 😅

The last track, "Telepathy" is off of their album "BE" that they wrote entirely during the pandemic and released in Nov of 2020. It's only 8 tracks and one of the tracks is a skit of when they won their first #1 on BBH100. It also has "Life Goes On" and "Dynamite", both of which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. You should really check out this entire album from top to bottom since it is very much a concept album. :)

Most people will recommend BTS’s most popular songs but they have so many little gems like “Louder Than Bombs” or “21st Century Girls.” I really love a song called “Paradise” because it shows off everyone’s range. i didnt know BTS could rap at first too and it's what actully got me into them. They had an online concert last year and I was skeptical of watching it bc i was a kpop hater all my life but my cousins invited me to watch it with them and i decided to come with an open mind. The first time I heard Daechwita performed by all the members, something clicked and the moment I got home, i started looking up who they were and everything that happened after is history 🥺 It's even better when you find the right crowd on twitter because it's such a loving community 😭 If you do ever end up joining ARMY twitter, please plase please stay away from solo stans, member victimizers, and toxic shippers by all means. They ruin the ARMY experience ://

I just stay away from twitter altogether. I’ve been ARMY for seven years and I have met so many ARMY through other platforms. Twitter made my anxiety so much worse. I love your reaction! I’m 68 and have been BTS ARMY since 2016. They sing in Korean,English & Japanese. All of them release solo music for free on SoundCloud & it is amazing as well. As for recommendations, I could literally list hundreds of songs. But definitely suggest Black Swan, On:Kinetic Manifesto, Dope, For You & Danger. The song on the end you liked so much is Telepathy from their BE album which was created for ARMY as a way to stay connected during the Covid pandemic. It was written by Suga, real name Min Yoongi, one of the rappers.
90%songs of BTS are meaningful, heart touching, against injustices
10% are about love, funky but still meaningful

They are just a really rare special group, and what a lucky coincidence they are. I think the first members being RM & Suga really set the tone for the group musically, with both having prior underground hip hop background, and have both songwriter & producer experience (fun fact Suga was initially signed on as a producer before he was persuaded to join the group). RM ended being a major contributor lyricist to the majority of their discography (tho personally I prefer Suga’s lyricism).
To me, I think around and after 2017, BTS’s music have largely diverged from ‘kpop’ sounds to a sound that’s quite unique to them (yet so diverse and everchanging).
They have 3 world tour behind the scenes docuseries that I think you might find quite interesting as a singer, the first one is called burn the stage and it’s on RUclips premium (1st episode is free😁). Or alternatively, there’s a mini documentary on the Coldplay collab My Universe that showed rare footage of them recording in the studio with Chris Martin that you might find interesting.
since their debut they make music far from what is "kpop", they debuted as a hip hop group and most of their songs were hip hop and R&B, now they don't just do those genres, they make more diverse music

They're amazing, they're literally have everything and not stuck just into one genre. They have various of songs with always a new concept and different genre so that's probably why our fandom has so much diversity in terms of age.

Just to back up what others have told you regarding the varied backgrounds and ages of ARMY. I became a fan four years ago at the age of 67! I happened to see them on “The Voice.” The song was Boy With Love. Actually the choreography caught my attention. I decided to check out some other songs. I’m so fortunate I did. BTS and ARMY are so welcoming to newbies. I attended one of their LA concerts last November with my daughter as my “cover.” Recently I’ve went to view the Live Stream of their Seoul concert in the theater. A middle aged woman and young adult sat by us. The older woman was the fan! 😄. I love each member for their unique talents. I believe that each member contributes to the success of the group. I don’t like them being called a “boy band.” They are seven unique musicians that have created a very special group that will have their place in musical history.

The last three are their all English songs they did during the Pandemic to help cheer us up during the ruff times. I love you reacting with your Bird. I have been an ARMY almost a year now. These men make me smile so much…I actually am an ARMY who fell in love with their personalities (I didn’t know they where artists) and they fell in love with their lyrics and music…
I highly recommend this video to get to know the members and also get a peek and getting to know the members personalities. This is a newer introduction but this ARMY is trying to make an introduction that is accurate, up to date, etc. so most ARMY can agree on. Oh, you like hip-hop! BTS is from a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
I recommend We On. This song is a track in their debut album, and you can see how much emotion they put in it.
For reference, most of the BTS members were teenagers at that time. It would have been hard to bear at such a young age. But like We On's lyrics, they did it.
And Jump, Mic Drop, Cypher 1-4, Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo), Ugh, Interlude : Shadow, DDAENG, Outro : Tear are great too. :)
Oh, you know they're great dancers! Among the songs in this video, Save Me has a music video. And there's choreography. :)

Watching this made me so happy just seeing my boys smile and having fun, it also showed me why I loved all the songs that they performed.
Also Jimin was defo the pies piper during the performance as he just hypnotized me and I couldn't keep my eyes of off him (also I might be biased saying that as he is my ult bias)

Their live performances are always amazing! Their voices live is much better than the studio version even while dancing intense choreography at the same time. You can check out their live medleys on their concerts esp the one in Japan, Wembley or the most recent concert in LA where they do 3-5 songs in a set. Their award show performances are iconic esp MMA 2019, MAMA 2019, MAMA 2018, MMA 2018, MAMA 2016 and so on. Hello 💜 Glad you enjoyed the BTS Room Live Festa performance. I will echo my fellow Army and recommend you watch the BTS Tiny Desk concert- 3 full songs video is about 14 mins long. BTS are terrific live, and some other performances great for newcomers would be the 5 songs they did for MTV Unplugged, including Telepathy, the last song you heard here that you particularly liked and a cover of Coldplay’s Fix You.
They did 4 songs for BBC One, their 3 all English songs plus a cover of I’ll Be Missing You.
Love your bird, to be honest he stole the show for me. I especially liked his little head bop dance to Telepathy! 🐥

BTS doesn’t restrict themselves to 2 or 3 genres, they love all types w music hence they compose different melodies and even experiment on a sound of their own. That’s why for us, BTS is their own genre. BTS is the best! There’s nothing like BTS!

I'm not that old, but I'm 37 and it often surprises people that I'm a huge BTS fan at my age. My parents still don't get it haha. I've been a fan since Feb/March 2018. Thank you for your reaction and I just like your positive vibe! Since you mentioned that you like Ed Sheeren, he also wrote them another song Make It Right which is super good and has a different vibe from any of the songs in this video. Other songs that are different so you can sort of see their whole range are hip hop song Mic Drop (one of their very popular songs I recommend the Steve Aoki remix version), 134340 and House of Cards are sort of Jazz-y but in different ways, The Truth Untold for ballad, So What or DNA for EDM, Dis-ease is off of their album BE and I just love it the more I listen to it...but I'm not sure of it's genre. It seems to be 3 different types of song, but ultimately sort of gives me an old-school hip hop feel. For some of their OLD old songs, I would recommend Paldogangsan / Satoori Rap (the rappers flexing about their hometowns in their dialects where they just seem to have a blast), Coffee (chill pop/R&B type song), N.O. (criticizing their education system), Boy in Luv (the song that comes years before Boy With Luv that you already reacted to. I actually prefer Boy in Luv for the more rock feeling), No More Dream (their debut song which tries to tell kids to not settle for what their parents/teachers/adults want and to follow their own dreams), Just One Day (a song that reminds me of older R&B songs). If any of these genres are your cup of tea, then there are some recommendations that come quickly to mind. Sadly as soon as I post this comment I'll probably think of 10-15 other songs that I should have recommended. That's the downfall of their large discography with almost all amazing songs. Their B-sides are usually better than their title tracks, and rarely have I ever considered a song worth skipping on an album listen. I also usually prefer their live performances better because the sound AMAZING live.
