Jimin (the one with the blonde ponytail) studied contemporary dance and modern dance in school. He was the top student of his group. In the Black Swan M/V (music video), this shows even more as he does some contemporary moves outside of the choreography. Loved your reaction 💜

Their next part of the performance, right after this was ON(its a song in case ur confused). The dove has a symbolic representation in ON. Thats why the dove, theyre transitioning from this performance to the next.

I'm so sorry I just realized some footage was lost around 6:12 I really have no idea where it went. Basically I was saying that in ballet the technique is to never reach an end point and to continue to grow your lines, while other styles have clear periods at the end of movements. I like the way that the stops are added to this choreo to make it dynamic. Once again so sorry I lost the footage, that's embarrassing lol. Hope y'all enjoy the video tho!

Hi! Was just recommended your channel! I might be repeating someone else or saying things you already know, but... No matter what some rude people say, don't be afraid to: pause, replay scenes frame by frame if you need to, make long videos, use onomatopoeia, and flail around (lol), etc. Don't worry about making mistakes re: K-pop terminology or BTS facts while you're learning. Talk about your assumptions, but don't make assumptions, because BTS are uncharted territory in the world of K-pop. ARMY is all about watching reactors bring their expertise to the table so we can learn even more about our group. As much examination as we can get in any aspect of their performance and their persons is fascinating. We hope it is fascinating for you, too, and you continue to explore their work! We always welcome new ARMY, too. ;-)
I suggest you enlarge those footnotes so they are easier to read. We are excellent subtitle readers, but that font makes it a bit difficult for older eyes. You might reference Cedric Gegel's use. He's got it down. Plus, among all his other specialties, he's a former dancer!

It was so fun to watch along with you! You should definitely watch the Black Swan Art Film MV vs. the Black Swam MV. The Art Film is a more classical interpretation of the song and the dancing is done by a professional contemporary ballet company. The Art Film is also how BTS/Big Hit unveiled this song to the world (the Art Film was released before the original MV and the spotify digital download). I found it profoundly interesting that they chose that method to release a new song. BTS' MV came almost a month later and filtered the same music through BTS' own choreography and style. As someone who loves BTS and also ballet, I found it extremely interesting that they chose to release new music in this way. Kpop as a genre, places a lot of importance on the visual aspects of the art--so music, performance, dance, stagecraft, concept--etc Is extremely important. They really are about the whole package. This is true for BTS and also other Kpop groups. For BTS, especially--everything is intentional.

Black Swan is based off a quote by Martha Graham who was famous for her work in modern dance. "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing and this death is the hardest." The song speaks about their fear of one day being on stage singing, rapping or dancing but it doesn't move them like it did before. They're all still young men (24-29) and have been active within this industry since 2013 when the youngest was just 15. There's another version of Black Swan that's more instrumental based and has a dance company perform. The second segment you watched used this version but only 6 of the 7 were able to perform as one of the rappers was out due to shoulder surgery. I'll link the other version because it's beautiful and you might have a deeper connection to it being a dancer.

To add on it is not only "Swan Lake" referenced but also the movie "Black Swan".
Since we are on "The Map of the Soul" - a book about Jungian psychology - this song is an exploration of their "Shadow"/Unconsciousness as artists. The fear of the death of passion.
And maybe they sound like that also because "everything is ocean floor" and they are drowning in their shadow/fear. Funnily enough the position at the end and beginning reminds me of "Fake Love" and them being/feeling like marionettes not in control of themselves even as the lack comes here from wthin instead from an outside relationship. So this was maybe wanted?

That was live at an awards show. This is how their set started. There was more after. You still need to watch the official music video. You see alot more of Jimin and his beautiful moves (he's trained in cobtemporary). Also, there is a dance cover by a dance troupe that you, as a dancer, will most likely like. There's also video from their recent L.A. concerts which is very cool. Also dance practices are usually the choreography for a live stage performance, so there can be more or less in official movie videos. Did that make sense?

Thanks for checking out BTS. Black Swan is one of my favorite songs by the band. As someone that grew up in ballet, hip hop and jazz I'm always impressed with the level of talent this group has in many forms of dance. I never cared of contemporary as a child but as you said, now often you see it with more hip hop elements which is far more pleasing to my eye. The song's lyrics deal with the fear of losing passion for your art and how that would be a fate almost worse than death itself. I'm sure all true artists feel this way at some point. Anyways, I hope you watch the music video, it really highlight's Jimin's (blonde in the pony tail) contemporary art school training and is just visually stunning in many ways.

It's very nice to see this from the perspective of a dancer. I enjoyed it very much, and I loved your personality. Would love to see more reaction videos to BTS dance practices. If you don't mind, though, I have a few requests: first, could you maybe make the written commentary (in white) a bit larger? Sometimes, due to my bad Internet speed, the video isn't very sharp, so I wasn't able to follow some of the things you had written. Second, could you please watch the whole thing once, and then go back and comment? It was a bit hard for me to visualize/appreciate the dance as a whole this way. Finally, could you also comment on how much the dance is related to the meaning the song is trying to get across? I know it's in Korean, but there are lyric videos, etc. that could help. For example, I know that this song in particular was inspired by the BTS members' fear of losing their passion for creating creating music, and particularly by a quote by a dancer named Martha Graham who is quoted as saying, "A dancer dies twice, once when she stops dancing, and this death is more painful." Thanks again for the reaction, and looking forward to more BTS. 😊🌺

First of all, I really love your reaction and the little edit comments that you include. So far you sound like a fun and amazing person! Your explanations and demonstrations make me want to try dancing even though I am a massive klutz and would probably break something or someone if I tried, lol.
Second, instead of haunted the song sounds to me like I am listening to it from under water. I think the way the instrumentals are distorted like that and the way the member's voices don't sound as distinctly different as they usually do relates well to the lyrics though I don't know if it was all intended that way (though knowing BTS it probably was).
Third (and last since this comment is getting long), you have given me even more appreciation for the dance in Black Swan. You've pointed some things out that I didn't notice before but now that you have mentioned and explained a few things, I can see what you were talking about like some of the sections with the switch between a more Hip Hop style to a more contemporary style that didn't stand out to me before.

We get it 😁. There's always going to be someone who complains you pause too much or not enough, so try to let it roll off your back and do what you need for yourself. We are most interested in authenticity, not doing it "right" or to a standard length of video time. Just be you. We love people sharing their expertise or passionate knowledge perspective. 💜

I loved your analysis and explanations! 🥰 I think you've already been informed but the person you pointed out the extension and leg lift for is the main dancer of the group called Jimin. He trained for about 6 years in hip hop - popping and locking and won a bunch of regional competitions and then went on to study dance in high school. He initially had training in general dance fields for the first year - a little bit of everything : ballet, Korean traditional dance, etc. And then went on to specialize in contemporary dance. He only trained for about a year before he left to become a Kpop idol but he was was considered an incredible talent in his city and his teachers even tried to convince him not to leave because they felt the dance world would lose a great talent 😅 I find Jimin's dance style the most interesting to watch in BTS because like you mentioned he is super versatile and he also has extensive martial arts training which I feel like shows through in his dancing? It's super lovely to watch that mix of fluidity, grace and power. I feel like you'd enjoy Lie by him. It's a more interpretive dance? I'll leave links in the reply :D

Thanks for the input. I really hope it didn't come off as trying to "other" kpop from dancing, I was trying to compare and contrast their style to other styles, like ballet, but I'll try and find a better way to refer to different styles in the future.

Jungkook has training, as well. He wanted to be a dancer (and he is) but it didn't originally include singing. He studied dance in the U.S. for a bit. I think it was about a year.

13:16 I love that they added the sun and moon, because Jimin and Jungkook (the two that open the scene) str often called the Sun and Moon duo in Korea!
16:53 Ohh you should watch how high his leg can go, Jimin is super flexible and has actually kicked himself in the head accidentally while trying to sit down dramatically (he fell down the stool) hahaha and in IDOL (another BTS song) there's a round kick as part of the choreo and his leg sometimes goes past his head.
18:54 Oh boy hahaha that's Jimin! His dancing is very impressive! He did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna in the MV (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA (7:25) during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space.
Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

loved your reaction and all your input/explanations as i know nothing about dance besides the little ive learned by watching bts.
bts is a 7 member group from south korea theyre not really kpop (its a long and nuanced convo that has many opinions but majority of bts fans and korean public along with bts themselves dont consider bts as kpop)
bts do ALL genres of music many different styles of dance and they write and produce their own music so very often the lyrics and dance are tied together to tell whatever story theyre telling for that song as its based on their own experiences.
theres 3 rappers and 4 vocalists all also have solo music along with the group music.
i know you specialize in dance but maybe you can also react to the lyrics/music videos/performances too not just dance practices im not sure what you plan on doing but id love to see your reactions to the dances as well as the lyrics. doolsetbangtan site is our go to for bts lyrics but if you wanna use lyric videos use af taehyung, zaty farhani and dial 6137. NEVER use jaeguchi or lemoring they get the most views but are always wrong with the translations. for music videos use the CC button but if it says auto generated dont use it the captions wont be correct. :)
to understand bts and korean music in general please also react to these videos itll help you understand so much more bts fans love long reactions so dont worry about videos being too long !!

K-Pop artists are called idols and MMA stand for Melon Music Awards. The hand movements at the beginning and end of this really makes this so very special. They mostly bring the one singing to the centre. Being able to sing and dance at the same time as they do is indeed impressive.

So actually, Jimin is a very complete dancer. He dances hip-hop, but he also took contemporary lessons when he was younger, so he is often used as the main dancer whenever contemporary/modern choreographies are taking place. He is really powerful when dancing hip-hop, but his movements are even sharper and more noticeable when he's doing contemporary routines. So yeah, he's just amazing.
