North Wales 1.5 Kw Hydroelectric System Part 5 Making The Turgo Turbine

  • This week I have been working on the turgo turbine for the customer hydro electric installation. it is a 170mm pcd 17 spoon turgo turbine with a 2" bsp spear valve mounted in a custom made stainless steel housing. I have taken everything I have learnt from mine and applied all the changes I would have done if I had the skills and tools at the time. I think it came out well and im quite sure it will be very efficant

I’ve spent almost a month binging your initial hydro series, then the workshop, then the greenhouse, and now I’m watching some of the in-between videos. As someone who is planning to move out of the city and build a fully off-grid homestead, the knowledge I’m gaining from you has been invaluable and will be put to good use as I find the land that will fit me and my family’s needs all the way through how we develop the land for the best balance of conservation and usability.
Keep rocking on, you’re doing amazing things and are an inspiration to us all!

The last time I saw one of your videos you made a wool processing box out of plywood. Fast forward you have a full service machine shop with plasma cutter etc. These projects seem to flow out from your mind through your hands. Your God-given talents are maturing. Good on you bro, seems you built yourself an off-grid shop that would be a valuable community resource in a grid-down scenario.

The one thing that would be missing is a gauge telling you how much the valve is opened ... and this handle would be the thing to do it. A simple marker on one end (which is at the top when it is fully closed ... to give it an easy starting point) would do the trick and then you have to test/remember how many turns you can make with the handle for it to be fully open. Divide that into "sections" and add a way to remember/mark the number of turns it is opened atm. and you have a "power level".

Chris, research broaching a key in a bore with a boring bar in your lathe. Basically lock your spindle, mount a tool the width of the keyway you need in a boring bar. Just hand feed the carriage back and forth using the cross slide to make small cuts. Your a cleaver guy, this should be enough to get you started. Old machinist trick we were taught at the beginning of our machinist apprenticeships. My grandfather even did it that way back in the 1920's. Worked then, still works now.

Excellent Work! I love watching your videos! Your lathe speed 5:08 sounded and looked to be around 800-1000 ish rpm. Try running most stainless and chromoly steels around quarter that surface speed/cutting speed to avoid that high pitch chattering. Helpful little equation is (sorry, its for inches) CS x 3.82 / Dia. Guessing your bore is roughly 1.375" 35mm and a good cutting speed for stainless is 70, then 70 x 3.82 = 270* and 270 / 1.375 = 200*rpm. ID boring likes more speed given the nature of the cut so 200-300rpm. For the 12mm drill 270* / .472 = 566rpm. 500rpm, round down for drilling. Those alloys LOVE slow and heavier cuts. Cheers!

Nice another way to attach it would be using reverse threads to what ever the direction of the spin is, that way as it spins it will tighten it and maintain being tightly attached to it.. Thank you for sharing..

Chris could you add a secondary tank in line with your compressor to bypass the power issues that cause your plasma cutter to miss holes. Not sure if that would be adequate to get you through an entire job but might be worth a thought. I really enjoy following your channel. Keep up the great work.

I was going to say the same thing, if you can find an old broken compressor you can use the tank as an accumulator (more cheaply than just buying one new)

Please if possible do a small update video on your solar. Am so interested what you get out of those panels in british weather. With the insane electricity prices of late i've been looking into solar.

Would also like to know of any plans for disposal (etc.) when the time comes.
