This duet makes much more sense to reflect their sisterhood! Amazing choice from the producers and creative team! "You make yourself up and leave that man"!
i do believe this too because it shows effie gave her the push and strength back when they were friends thats why she led the group so the wouldnt get hurt in the movie they didnt really have backstories but this gave them one
I would have loved to see this version in the movie. I like the movie version but this one is just so much better. Loved to have seen J and Bey belt it out together. 💛💛💛💛
"Listen" was written for the movie version as a solo for Deena (Beyonce). But they've rewritten it as a duet in the stage revival. I think it works so much better here - showcasing these women's voices, and telling the story of their characters journey, friendship and redemption. It really brings closure to their story so beautifully.
punkypower I agree with you however I think this wouldn’t have fit in the movie like it does in the play since the movie wasn’t really a “hop out the blue singing” movie
Because of ICSYV, I found this! I really like this one as this song has patched their tainted relationship as Deena is like asking for Effie's guidance ❤️❤️
I hate that this song was not in the movie, and that instead Beyoncé got a solo... don't get me wrong she's a great artist and I like her very much, but this song is way more powerful and emotional as a duet than as the song they made for Beyoncé. They probably should have made it a duet back then too.
I know, that's why I said they should have made it a duet back then too. I know it wasn't part of the original musical, but I like the duet version of the song more than the solo one. I was saying it would have been a great duet in the movie too, but in order for Beyonce to have a solo they didn't do it as a duet though it's (at least in my opinion) more powerful in lyrics and makes more sense in the story than as a solo.
wow,,,, this is not new lyrics... this one is the original from the broadway stage. Beyonce's version is for the movie... both powerful, but i prefer the original which is this one
This song was not in the original Broadway production. It was written for (and, partially by) Beyoncé for the film. It was later incorporated into the 2009 U.S. National Tour as a duet, presumably to appeal to fans of the film.
+Dan Indano I really enjoy it as a duet because it "patches" Effie and Deana's relationship up, whereas in the original & movie you're like "ohh, they're friends again??"

the movie version and the broadway version of listen is totally different
I saw the original cast in '83. I don't think this song was in the original play at all.

Thanks for clarifying
