Rush - The Analog Kid bass, synths and pedals cover

- New version of The Analog Kid with synth and pedal parts. I wanted to do a new cover of this song with the additional parts included since I had spent some time making the patch on my M1 with the pad and choir sound split. The M1 has some awesome choir sounds and this is a good song to show them on. I also used an old Boss bass chorus pedal that I got years ago and hadn''t used for a long time until I recently started using it with my synths and it works well with the M1 in particular.
I used the Rickenbacker for this one as it's the bass that I believe Geddy recorded Signals with and I like the sound I was able to get out of it for this recording (brand new Rotosound strings and the YYZ pedal with highs/drive turned up a fair bit). I wanted to try and record the bass and pedal parts simultaneously with 2 cameras but I just don't have the room near my pc to set that up, so I did them separately. The guitar solo is one of the hardest bass/pedal together sections in any Rush song in my opinion. There is a lot going on in both parts!
This is the last of the songs on my channel I will do newer versions of for now (some of the other older videos on my channel such as YYZ are not as high quality as I would like, but they have more views so I'll leave them for a while) and I'll get onto some new stuff next. Planning to do some 90's stuff next but will see what mood I'm in when I decide to do some recording :)
Equipment used:
Rickenbacker 4001 (Rotosound Swingbass 66 strings for those interested)
Tech 21 YYZ pedal
Korg M1 (through a Boss Bass chorus pedal)
Roland PK-5 Pedals
Finally someone who’s not afraid to attack the strings. Well done Sir
Thanks. I do try and hit them hard! My fingers don't thank me for it though ;)
Hey man amazing stuff....it's funny though with no disrespect to you what so ever it looks like you were barely holding on there..lol...
I mean I get it...nice job..
I remember the day I matured as a guitarist... after years of careful playing. : the day I realized the artist has to get the sound out the music out at any cost, and treating the guitar as a delicate instrument is not intended. It has to be used : AHA it is an instrument in the true English sense of the word. Well done ! Indeed. Bravo.
This is one of Geddy's toughest bass lines in my opinion. Throw the pedals in and it really becomes difficult. Nice job man!
Thanks! Yeah it's a pretty crazy bass part. Really fast. Thanks for watching
Singing on top that bass line kind of makes it tough as well lol
@@HansMcGruber I can barely handle the bass on this one, let alone all the other stuff Geddy is doing, especially singing!
If you can play the bassline then pedals isn’t a challenge. All of it is on the 1 so it’s pretty easy to do if you can handle the bass.
That attack man, wow! If it weren’t for that little braid that gets caught on camera I’d totally believe you were Geddy 😂
Haha thanks dude. I always thought there was a lack of facial hair in Rush :)
Hard to appropriately comment on something done so well! Loved this, you did this song justice with your playing!!
Thanks! Appreciate the nice comment, glad you liked it
It amazes how Geddy can sing and play all those notes at the same time. Killer bass tone Bro, and well done
Thanks. Honestly even if he just played bass and did nothing else he would still be the best ever imo. The fact that he sings, synths and pedals at the same time is just mad
Yup Geddy is a musical freak of nature!
Easily the best bass/keys cover of “Analog Kid” I’ve ever seen. Cheers to you for capturing the passion and magic of this tune 👍
Thanks for watching! Great to hear that you enjoyed it. Plenty more rush stuff coming soon so stay tuned if you like this kind of stuff :)
I can't believe Geddy Plays these bass lines while singing
Yeah he's the multitask master for sure!
Jesus man... just found your channel and your killing all of these songs! Great job and great Geddy tone!
@wurger13 thanks! Glad you found it and are enjoying my videos
Been a Rush fan since 1979, began playing guitar in 1981. Analog Kid is my all time favorite Rush song. You did a super job of playing it on this cover, nailed it! In fact, I am going to feed this into my jam tracks to practice with (to simulate playing with another musician). It's been quite a long time since I performed this song with my former bandmates so it will be fun!
Thanks! It would rank pretty high on my rush list too. One of my favourites to play. Awesome I hope I prove a worthy geddy substitute :)
Spot on!!! Is it just the sound of the Ric itself? Best cover of Analog Kid I’ve seen!
Thanks! Very nice of you to say. It's the Ric through my Sansamp YYZ pedal with brand new strings
Daaaamn that tone is nasty that sounds great and awesome playing too! I haven't even tried learning to play Analog Kid yet since it's so complicated and you play it so easily :D
Thanks. I assure you it's not easy for me :)
Well done. Beautiful sound. It always amazes me that Geddy seems to be playing this with no effort at all and also while singing!😮
Thanks for watching. Yeah this must be one of the hardest ones for him to sing and play and also go between keyboards etc. Lots of multitasking required !
Amazing cover! Love the synths but man that Ric sound is absolutely amazing. I run a similar setup with my Ric and I love the tone.
Thanks. I thought it felt like a Rickenbacker song to be honest since the album version is the one I listen to all the time :)
Come on now, we all know that this is Geddy playing in this video. Must be mustn't it? 👏👏👏Awesome.
Haha thanks. I'm honored you think so :)
Anyone who thinks bass is boring watch this and look down in shame! Well played sir!
Thanks Qasim!
Yep! Way to ride that E!
So good! Bravo!
@@DomingoVoiceOver thanks for watching!
Completely Awesome!!!!🔥🔥🎉Your playing is such an inspiration, thank you for sharing 🙏🏻👍Nice Rick too 🤘
Thanks! My pleasure. Really glad you enjoyed it
Incredible. You just earned a new subscriber. Thanks for showing us how it's played. Cheers
Thanks for watching!
Simply superb. I’m off to check Colombian fields, then I’m pulling out the black 4003 for some Rush time….😊
Thanks for watching!!
My friend, you nailed the tone! Well done. Can you explain the signal chain? Rick4001>pedal type?>amp?
Thanks! I think for this video it was just the Ric into the YYZ pedal (it was a while ago so I can't remember exactly!). I'm going to do a video soon for my current setup and chain so you can see how I get my sound on more recent videos when I make that one
Let's play..
Thanks for watching!
Super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! :)
Well done! Now throw in the singing on top of it all! Heh. Mind-boggling... Geddy is a master.
Ever tried Digital Man? That's a pretty hairy one too.
Yep he sure is! And yes I'll do digital man sometime. Just want to do some other tracks from different albums first then come back to some more early 80s stuff
Bands like Meshuggah happen when guitarists get jelly of Geddy's bass tones.
Haha yep. And some 8 strong guitars or whatever the guys in meshuggah use :) thanks for watching
Dude…lol! That was incredible. Love it 👍
Thanks for watching :)
Talent on loan from God?
Haha thanks :)
Nicely done sir. Last hurdle is to do both and sing the song all at the same time. Yeah, I know.
Haha well I'm no singer so luckily I can just focus on the bass :) thanks for watching
Cool cover, well played Sir! Are these original Taurus pedals?
Thanks for watching! They are roland pk5 midi pedals connected to my korg m1 synth. They don't have any sounds themselves they are just used to trigger the synth that they are connected to. The Taurus pedals are a synthesizer with their own sounds which are controlled on the instrument.
@@hemibass Thanks for the info. Keep on going with the excellent work.
Goodnes. Nothing sounds quite like a Ricky. Wonderful tone!
Thanks glad you liked it
Oh, I’m gonna be geeking out on you, buddy….. subscribed.
Thanks :) new ones coming soon
Excellent Rickenbacker Signals tone! That is as dirty and nasty as any bass tone can get! The synth pedals! You nailed that wonderful angelic voice! The whole performance is as good as it gets! You definitely can channel Geddy Lee's tones! My question is how in the name of all that is holy. Hod does Geddy do it all live? I know Alex takes up many of the bass pedal lines, too! How does Alex do it all also? This song is deceptively complicated! That's like throwing the whole album of Hemispheres into a 4 minute song!
Thank you for posting this! That's the way to attack those strings! Beat those Rickenbacker strings like a rented pickup truck!
I used to use Rotosound strings. They started sending out bad strings that didn't have that "attack". I moved over to DR Stainless steel Hi Beams. I've never had a bad string from them. I'll never go back to Rotosound. They don't backup their product. But no matter what strings you use, you got that beautiful Ricky clank down pat!
Thanks for watching! Well it's always impressive how Geddy does the pedals and bass playing in the guitar solo section for this song. It's really hard to do both and he made it look pretty easy haha.
Rotosounds have always been good to me, I've not felt a need to change for a long time. The only thing that could put me off is if they keep going up in price!
@hemibass yeah, they've gone past DR too. I've got a bad taste since his kid took the business over. It is a typical story. Dad starts a business. Dad was poor but worked hard. He made a great product for a fair price. Dad builds business. Kid comes along. Kid is used to having an easy life. Never learned how hard it is to make a buck. Dad dies. Kid takes over. Kid wants more and more. Kid rides dads coat tails and name for all it's worth. Product quality starts to slip because Kid uses less expensive materials. People call to complain. Kid offers to send customer 10 low E strings. Customer asks if that was a joke. Kid says no. Customer with over 30 basses goes to new company. Customer gets better strings for less money and has much better experience with new company customer service.
I don't complain about businesses. I understand things happen. But when they continue to produce crap and you wast hundreds of dollars on 4 string basses, 5 string basses, 8 and 12 string basses and 6 string baritone bass strings, double neck basses and you have problems with 1 of 2 sets of strings. Then company offers you 10 low E strings.... It's time to leave company.
Awesome cover! Great tone and audio quality. Superb!
Thanks!
Geddy, is that you?
Thanks! There is no higher compliment than that for me :)
Beautifully done! What a great song.
Thanks. One of my favourite basslines of Geddys
What’s incredible is that Geddy created this! Something that never existed before. Just crazy
He certainly brought together some amazing influences into something very original. And I don't think anyone has played like him since! Thanks for watching
Michael jackson said geddy.is my teacher
What is the blue "BASS" in the background?
My squire precision. First bass I got. Don't play it at all anymore though
@@hemibass ok
I will start learning this one. I promiss I won't try to sing along. 😅
Haha good luck! I don't sing along either:D
i dont look at anyone else ' trying to copy geddy;s bass ' there crap ,
Glad you like my stuff :) Appreciate the support
This is soooo difficult to play. Great Job!
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
Wow, verrrrry nice; clean! ✌🏽👍🏾✌🏽👍🏾
Thanks!
Killer video. Great playing.
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated
Damn! I can't play it that well on the Kazoo.
Haha I imagine this would be very hard on a Kazoo to be fair :D Thanks for watching
Good job! Just curious though, that action on the Rick looks nice and low. How were you able to get it? I’ve exhausted options on mine (improved bridge - hipshot. And neck relief good) any suggestions?
Thanks for watching. Im really not sure about the action, it was fairly low but not as low as my jazz bass. I never did anything fancy with my basses though so it would have been like that naturally most likely
@@hemibass I think the Jazz basses naturally have good string height due to the bolt on neck. But I suppose the differences are acceptable and is a trade off! Ricks have awesome sound, but require aggressive playing and I think that’s just fine. Thanks for the reply!
@@michaelwilson3341 no problem. Hope you find a solution with your ric!
😲😲😲😲😲😲😲😲 AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! Glad you liked it :D
Hats off to you sir, best AK bass cover!

Very Nice!!!
Thanks :)
Sweet!! Can you do a video of your setup?
Thanks! Yes sure I can do that at some point soon. Got some new synth gear coming soon too so I'll wait for that
Dead nuts. Salute!
Thanks for watching! Hope to have a new video done this week
I loved your video man, such an amazing tone you're getting! A bit of a nerdy question but what year is your Ric and how thick does the neck feel in your hands? I bought a 77' Ric in Azureglo because I heard the 70's models were a bit thinner than the 4003's!
Thanks! It's from 1978. The neck is thicker than my fender but not uncomfortably thick at all. Glad you like the tone I think the pedal really helps the rick! Thanks for watching
That was fierce.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching
Hahaha damn, i'm not even a bass player, but i'm still mesmerized by watching your videos. Job well done sir.

That ric and your attack are perfect for this song man love it!
Thanks! Glad you liked it
well done sir.....
Thanks for watching
so sick, bass sounds like a Monster Tractor Truck!
Thanks. The ric with some distortion can get really gritty and aggressive. A sound I really like :). Glad you liked the video
How did you switch from Taurus to choir only at the end on the PK5A pedals while staying in Poly mode on the PK5A pedals the whole time ?
It all just one sound on my M1. Its split at a certain point between the sawtooth pad and the choir sound. So I just switch the pedals from the low octave to a high one and it goes from the bass to the choir sound on the pedals. Hope that makes sense!
@@hemibass yes that totally makes sense and something I can program using my Cantibile. I have Arturia VST's and just trying to find the right Choir sound. Taurus sound is no problem. Thanks so much for the idea on how you split it. Will work on it tonight.
@@tomcorley238 no problem. The korg m1 has some an amazing choir sounds. Maybe you can find it sampled somewhere to use
Most underrated Rush song imo
One of the best basslines for sure. I love the whole second half. Thanks for watching
NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!
The tempo of this song is so fast! and the fact that Geddy played bass and sung this is amazing..you are a great bass player bro!
Thanks appreciate the comment! I hope to have a kid gloves cover on my steinberger on the channel eventually :)
Speechless- you are quite an amazing bassist, my friend.

Very nice!

Fkn awesome!!
Thanks! 😀
Damn
Haha thanks :)
Awesome
Thanks!
I have opx-3 plug in
How can i create this pad sound with it?
Hi, I haven't ever used any of the Oberheim plugins so I'm not sure how they work, but basically you want sawtooths with high sustain then fiddle with the filter settings. And make sure the Oscillators are a little detuned from each other. You want to cutoff the highs to soften the sound a bit. That should get you somewhere close.
@@hemibass tx man...amazing job !

Wow. Thank you for that. It made me realise a few things; You are very talended!
Your sound is great.
Geddy is a madman.
Signals is a great album.
Thanks! Really glad you liked it. Geddy is the master :)
Excellent throughout! And the 5th fret A and D notes during the guitar solo section and beyond played by rocking the tip of the middle finger. Genius!

Hey brother, great job! What city are you in? We're a Rush tribute band in Toronto.
Thanks! I'm in London
@@hemibass Ontario or England?
@@GavinSteiner England haha. Didn't know there was a London in Canada!
@@hemibass There is! So pack your bags, get over here and join the biggest Rush tribute in Canada!
Got that hard attack going. Same way i play. Many bassists that cover rush songs just dont pluck nearly hard enough like geddy did so it doesnt sound right. Gotta murder those strings and get that fret buzz he always liked.
Yep I'm glad geddy is the guy i tried to copy. Hitting the strings hard makes a far more interesting tone imo. Thx for watching
Man the glorious Ric sound. I think Geddy didn't use the Rick when recording this album... but it does sound awesome 😎
Thanks. Signals is all the Ric as far as I know!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
😂
Has always been one of the best examples of Geddy's musicianship, and a pretty well kept secret unfortunately. My favourite. Well played!
Thanks so much! One of my favourites of geddys to play along to
YOU, are a frickin genius, this is my favorite rush song, i will be forever try to learn, you make it look so easy, no substitute for all your hard work, dedication and experience,. i love your channel and thank you for sharing this with us, you inspire me to try to play more with the limited education i have,.....you are one of the very best unknown players out there,..
Thanks so much dude glad you are enjoying my videos. I try and film them in a way that shows the notes clearly so people can learn how to play them too since RUclips covers were the way I learned most rush songs as a teenager! Plenty more coming :)
You should try using Ric-O-Sound, I run the bridge pickup of my 4001 through a YYZ and the neck straight into my 70's Ampeg V4. You can mix in as much grind as you want with the bridge pickup but you get a nice mid and bottom end kick, exactly how Geddy did it. You can also use different effects on both pickups like Chris Squire did. Love the attack! That's how Rics are supposed to be played and something most people are too afraid to do when they cover Rush songs.
Yeah I think geddy did something similar right? Sounds too complicated for me haha I'm limited to plug in and play. Wouldn't have a clue how to start splitting the sound etc... does it make a big difference?
@@hemibass It makes a huge difference, you just need to be able to EQ the two pickups separately and spend some time finding a sound that you like. It's a little tricky to get used to but for me it was completely worth it. I was talking to TJH3113 a little while ago and he had a similar opinion on it to you, especially since he went as far as to get the neck pickup taken out of his Ric. I know there's this weird box that some people use but all I use is a stereo 1/4" cable. Billy Sheehan also uses a Stereo setup but he uses two seperate mono jacks because he was afraid he'd break his stereo cable and not be able to find a new one
😊
😇😇😇
amazing amazing tone and love the attack in your playing!! 2:09 especially, you kicked ass :,)
Thanks for watching!
You nailed that tone! Brilliant.
Thanks for watching!
What’s your signal chain?
I can't remember what it was for this video. Possibly was just a yyz pedal into a palmer? My more recent videos I have my gear all listed. I have a sansamp into channel 1 on my palmer and a trace elliot head into my 2nd channel of my palmer and blend the two
@@hemibass you have a Palmer?? Is it the PD5? They are super rare. But awesome!
@@scottburell8261 yes a pdi-05! Cool bit of kit I like the sound a lot

Oh nice whats the m1 patch?
This one is a layered patch with a choir on top of a sawtooth pad. The choir sounds on the m1 are great. Still haven't found any equivalent I prefer. Thanks for watching
@@hemibass and you've got foot pedal?
@@amonster8mymother yeah those are my pk-5 midi pedals. They basically control a synth via midi, but don't have sounds themselves. So I use them with the m1 here
Can I ask your age?

Amazing
My eyes, while always a Rush fan, as to the incredible "work" done by Geddy Lee on the bass; have been opened. Nicely done and thank you.

Simply amazing. You have the picking technique of Geddy and sound like him. 👏👏👏Congrats from Brazil.
Thanks! I've always thought Brazils love of Rush is awesome :) Rush in Rio is an amazing show
Indeed it is. Geddy and Steve Harris are the reason why I play bass. I went to Rush concert in São Paulo just one day before they recorded the DVD in Rio. They played here in São Paulo for 60,000 fans, an audience bigger than the audience in Rio.
