Open the Hip and Standing Leg for the Muay Thai Kick or Knee

  • I put the camera on the base of a freestanding bag so that I could record what was going on with our feet. (Any time you don't understand how Master K is doing something, watch his feet!) The knees go in opposite directions, rotating out and the foot of the kicking leg rotates "in" to arc the shin down into the target. We transition into knees, because he's showing me how the kick and the knee are so fundamentally the same, with the hips opening and the lower back driving forward for all the power. I really struggle with this. If I get the rotation right, then my balance and head are wrong and I get no height on the kick; if I get height, then my head is in and my hips are back and I get no power or rotation. Bah!
This is one of the best training videos I've ever recorded, I think, just because it's so important and never explained.

This is fantastic! Something that is not emphasized enough.
Also cool to have jazz playing the background. Class!

@sharked Yes, he kept telling me to "slow down" my kicking leg and "speed up" the turn on the standing leg. I found the only way to slow down the kicking leg is to utterly relax it and let it become a whip or like a baseball bat trailing behind me and just focusing everything on that standing leg. But getting the turn and THEN the thrust is hard on kicks; I can do it with a knee, no problem, but I can't get height for a kick. Yet.

Sylvie von Duuglas-Ittu - Muay Thai ...yes that is right. These afternoon my instructor hit me with karate and Muay Boran kick. And i still feel the difference of Muay Thai kick coz it is still hurt inside my muscle coz when he kicked me with Muay Thai i felt like his bone and my bone squished my muscle 😵, unlike the karate kick stays only in the skin.

woa...I'm actually going through the exact same thing after my 2nd session with Master K, my legs where not spread enough and I didn't hump the air to initiate my kick. Also, this changes the point of impact(max speed) for the high kick. Its a little later in the arc.

@aoshi3000 I've heard it called a "banana bag", but we just call it the Fairtex bag. It's full of various kinds of cloth, I think.

It makes sense with the rear leg and switch kicks... but just kicking with the lead leg I can't really generate that whip effect off of my rear leg. I wonder if there is a different way to kick with just the lead leg? 🤔

What kind of heavy bag is that? Is it a pole bag?

By ‘knees turn in opposite directions,’ you mean, ‘one internally rotates, the other one externally rotates,’ right?
You’ve posted a vid with you holding the pad from the freestanding bag, where you drill by throwing knees into it, but I swear I can’t find it again, do you remember which one that is?

Coz we kick like baseball batt and i understand it and did my best to kick like Muay Thai kick and i did it

Karate kicks' power comes from the leg only, whereas in muay Thai, you use the full body, every part of it, to kick. And also, Thais don't focus on the kick, but more on the stance, the hip rotation, the twist, and then the end result is a kick!

Keep your guard up on one side as you swing your arm on the other side as you kick.
