The steel hook made in Japan could be a Tulip. My grandmother had a set predating WWII. After Pearl Harbor my grandfather donated them to the war effort. Fortunately he missed the one she used the most and I ended up with it. I've never seen another one and I'm 71.

I would like to think that all the crochet hooks and thread of my mom's went to a collector like you. I actually had to stop crocheting just to watch the pure joy you had discovering some really fascinating finds. I had given her supplies away after she passed before myself and my daughter took up crocheting. It's something I regret, so imagining that they went to someone who truly loves them and could see the stories each hook, book and left over yarn and thread, makes it feel like she is still enjoying them through someone else. Those wooden one I imagine a young boy without much money for Christmas painstakingly making them for his momma, and presenting with pride on Christmas day. I have a carved bone hook I inherited when my Mom passed that belonged to my great-grandmother, which possibly belonged to her mother. My great-grandmother was born in 1901.
I have a hand-carved crochet hook too. Back in the 80's there was a young man who inherited a large estate from his parents it was too expensive for him to run with his sister, so he began carving crochet hooks and selling them to make some extra money. You sent the man the specs of the hook you wanted (like a Bates, like a Boye, and what size or sizes you wanted) and he sent them to you. I think mine came from someplace in Oregon (made from a type of Cherry Tree) as they were made from various kinds of wood found on the estate. His sister belonged to an old Crochet Forum, and she was selling them to other members of the forum. Cool idea for making money doing something you love.

I keep it in a separate box and marked on its own. It’s a family treasure as well as a crochet treasure. I will never part with it

Oh man, my eyes turned into saucers seeing that first box. Have to admit, I'm a tad jealous - I adore old thread. The older threads are better quality, and came in so many colors. Newer threads are poorer quality, and it's near impossible to find size 20 and 30 in stores, let alone in colors other than white or ecru. Also, on the whole, threads have risen in price quite a bit. One thing to remember is to not go too fast when you are showing items to us. Sometimes you get so excited you barely show it. My Great Aunts used the unique end for many things with crochet! It was invented to help you when crocheting or tatting! This was invented so if you didn’t have a good grip on your thread then it would hold it in place as you crocheted. My Great Aunts would use more than one crochet hook to crochet the item that they were crocheting on. They would use the end thing to hold the project in place while they crocheted further on down the row. They would use one hook to crochet and another to catch the crochet and pull it through! It was extremely fascinating to watch! They said that this is how they crochet because the arthritis in their hands would impede on what they wanted to make. They also used it to hold the crochet together so it wouldn’t unravel while making the project. The two hooks with the stars and wooden handles were made to help people with arthritis so that they could crochet still. Mr. BOD is a keeper! It’s so very good of him to straighten things up and hand you the crochet hook! My parents and grandparents knew of some men that would go out and find wood for making crochet hooks for their wives because they couldn’t afford any crochet hooks at that time. It was easy to get wool in those times but not the hooks. The husband would borrow some hooks from another woman who crocheted and made sure they were the right size that their wife wanted. This brings up so many good memories of the past for me! Thank You Chrystal! You are such an angel! Your singing is just perfect! It brightens my day!

Sadly, someone got rid of all of my grandma's crochet supplies before moving her into assisted living before she passed. I'm the only grandchild who she taught to crochet and because I lived in Georgia and she was in Ohio, no one thought to ask me. Just devastating. 😥 So glad you got a good haul, Crystal! My maternal grandmother was the first generation born to German emergrants here in the USA. Alll the women in her family were crocheters and brought their hooks with them. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of them passed to when the older ladies started dying off. That very long thin one with hooks at either ends used to have a cap on it. When you used the hook, the cap covered the end that you weren't using to protect it from catching on your work. I have another old steel one that has turned black with age. Very slim and it has a tiny ddouble headed German eagle on the thumb rest. Some of the hooks show an incredible amount of age, which the shafts are becoming thin and one hook is bent and looks llike it was very badly bent at one time and wasn't fully straightened. Have fun with the new hooks!

I have a lot of vintage hooks. I recently got a set of Lee Wards Steel hooks made in Germany. They are rusty and I haven't looked into how to clean them up yet, because I don't want to ruin them. That auction also had 3 Hero hooks in it. I love looking at all the old yarn working tools.

I'm happy you found more heros!! Another hook you don't see much of is "dritz"... Its a Swiss made hook, but I've only seen the sizes for lace, or at least that's what my mom had. She would put lace on hankies. All JPCoats. She probably had all those books too!!! 😊 That brought back memories!! Unfortunately, my SIL's just tossed all of them when she passed. 😢 The set of boyes looks exactly like the set that my grandmother gave me in the '60's!!!! Yes, I STILL have them!! And I learned to knit on those old boye needles in the early '60's!!! They were so unwieldy for a little kid. 🥰 (I'd LOVE another OLD steel "boye" 10, I use them for beading my knitting, they're so smooth!!! The new one's are c**p!! I had 2, one black, one silver.... I accidentally broke the black one.... I cried!!).

The small knitting needles are double-ended for sox and sleeves. Those are tunisian crochet hooks. Congrats on your Hero hooks. Whan had a disaster when his mother threw away the envelope his Hero hooks were in.

My Father gave me a box of hooks that he picked up at an estate sale or garage/yard sale. It had several HERO'S, GEM'S, old BOYES and SUSAN BATES. Also one bone like the one you got. There were a couple with that little cap on the end. They were on the hook end like a pen cap. I thought it was to protect the delicate hook.

One thing to remember is to not go too fast when you are showing items to us. Sometimes you get so excited you barely show it. I noticed that with the hooks and needles in this video 😊 I love antiques too and i didn't hardly comprehend what I was seeing. I am not criticising or complaining. I am just reminding. Hand carved hooks are great. My Aunt carved her knitting needles so they would fit her hands after arthritis set in.
What a find... I'm 75 and when I was little, my Mom use to make rag rugs with a crochet hook she widdled out. Sure would love to have that hook !!

That booklet that you showed on learn to crochet is how i taught myself to crochet in 1971 when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was a teacher and it was summer.

The knitting needles look like many i have that were passed down. I even have some bakelite and bone needles from the UK and Canada. I do tey to use them and shre them out among the grandies who craft.

My Great Aunts used the unique end for many things with crochet! It was invented to help you when crocheting or tatting! This was invented so if you didn’t have a good grip on your thread then it would hold it in place as you crocheted. My Great Aunts would use more than one crochet hook to crochet the item that they were crocheting on. They would use the end thing to hold the project in place while they crocheted further on down the row. They would use one hook to crochet and another to catch the crochet and pull it through! It was extremely fascinating to watch! They said that this is how they crochet because the arthritis in their hands would impede on what they wanted to make. They also used it to hold the crochet together so it wouldn’t unravel while making the project. The two hooks with the stars and wooden handles were made to help people with arthritis so that they could crochet still. Mr. BOD is a keeper! It’s so very good of him to straighten things up and hand you the crochet hook! My parents and grandparents knew of some men that would go out and find wood for making crochet hooks for their wives because they couldn’t afford any crochet hooks at that time. It was easy to get wool in those times but not the hooks. The husband would borrow some hooks from another woman who crocheted and made sure they were the right size that their wife wanted. This brings up so many good memories of the past for me! Thank You Chrystal! You are such an angel! Your singing is just perfect! It brightens my day!

Sadly, someone got rid of all of my grandma's crochet supplies before moving her into assisted living before she passed. I'm the only grandchild who she taught to crochet and because I lived in Georgia and she was in Ohio, no one thought to ask me. Just devastating. 😥 So glad you got a good haul, Crystal! My maternal grandmother was the first generation born to German emergrants here in the USA. Alll the women in her family were crocheters and brought their hooks with them. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of them passed to when the older ladies started dying off. That very long thin one with hooks at either ends used to have a cap on it. When you used the hook, the cap covered the end that you weren't using to protect it from catching on your work. I have another old steel one that has turned black with age. Very slim and it has a tiny ddouble headed German eagle on the thumb rest. Some of the hooks show an incredible amount of age, which the shafts are becoming thin and one hook is bent and looks llike it was very badly bent at one time and wasn't fully straightened. Have fun with the new hooks!

I think you should start a museum with all your old thread, yarn, hooks and instruction books! I can remember my grandma and great aunt giving me handkerchiefs with really fine thread edgings crocheted on them. So pretty.
I have a lot of vintage hooks. I recently got a set of Lee Wards Steel hooks made in Germany. They are rusty and I haven't looked into how to clean them up yet, because I don't want to ruin them. That auction also had 3 Hero hooks in it. I love looking at all the old yarn working tools.

I’m big on vintage to. Just last week I found a bag of vintage crochet hooks with several hero hooks and a few Susan Bate hooks that had a 29 cents embossed on it. Super cool find. I want to start make Dollie’s I just love them.I enjoyed this video very much.

Another hook you don't see much of is "dritz"... Its a Swiss made hook, but I've only seen the sizes for lace, or at least that's what my mom had. She would put lace on hankies. All JPCoats. She probably had all those books too!!! 😊 That brought back memories!!

The set of boyes looks exactly like the set that my grandmother gave me in the '60's!!!! Yes, I STILL have them!! And I learned to knit on those old boye needles in the early '60's!!! They were so unwieldy for a little kid. 🥰
(I'd LOVE another OLD steel "boye" 10, I use them for beading my knitting, they're so smooth!!! The new one's are c**p!! I had 2, one black, one silver.... I accidentally broke the black one.... I cried!!).

The small knitting needles are double-ended for sox and sleeves. Those are tunisian crochet hooks. Congrats on your Hero hooks. Whan had a disaster when his mother threw away the envelope his Hero hooks were in.

In Canada, they use the word "dollar", but it is a completely different economic system and has different valuation. As a knitter, please try to keep the pairs together of the ones you keep. That really tiny knitting needle you kept has a partner.

Hi 😊👋 awesome haul great information i inherited all the yarn needles from my mother rip she knew how to knit incredibly skilled we(me and my two girls) still wear them now crochet hooks some don't have any markings and i know she bought them in Mexico and some here in Israel the marks are haero or inoxal jmra md from England aero Millward BMC if you find yourself wanting them i will send them to you thank you Nora
My Father gave me a box of hooks that he picked up at an estate sale or garage/yard sale. It had several HERO'S, GEM'S, old BOYES and SUSAN BATES. Also one bone like the one you got. There were a couple with that little cap on the end. They were on the hook end like a pen cap. I thought it was to protect the delicate hook.

Enjoy your hooks, books, and thread. I have some hooks that have that hook at the end, I use it to hook the last stitch on the hook so it doesn’t unravel when I set my project aside.
I am so envious of those doily pattern books! The 2nd thing I ever learned to crochet was doilies! A friend explained how to read a pattern and I took off like a rocket! 😊
My Godmother's Mother taught me how to crotchet with the threads and I did dollies at first, then graduated up. Ive been crotchet since I was a kid, now 62

Crystal, I really enjoyed seeing you with those hooks. I am from Wales in the UK and the one made in England is probably a Millward. They made hooks and needles.
