    What are your experiences with safety in Tulum?

    • @belizeguy
      @belizeguy 3 года назад +1

      Totally love Tulum and it always is amazing. I certainly remember the old days though without paved roads or electricity. (1987!) Safety here? Never been an issue, but, we also do not go out at night, and stick around the parts of town we know well, here and in Merida as well. Check Points? Feel the same way. They are never aggressive or hostile in my experience. Of course, we never have any drugs in our possession or are out while drinking. So, not a problem. Very Glad that you BOTH feel safe here. It is a great place to be. Enjoy!!!

      Guys your video was so thoughtful. It’s sad how dangerous the USA has gotten - or always was. I’m feeling safe in Tulum however I don’t go out after 7 or 8. Also it’s dangerous near the Invasion, the squatters area. I love La Valeta, because everyone knows each other and says hola every day. I’m going to be totally honest - it’s a great place to visit but not to live long term (for me). But for a few weeks or a month it’s amazing 🤩

      It’s all just a media agenda set into place to make Americans fear Mexico because IF they knew how much better the quality of life CAN be there… they would leave the US. If you research, many have had the time during the pandemic to leave and travel to Mexico. This is the huge influx of expats that Mexico is experiencing. The amount of vloggers setting up shop in MX is amazing.
      I, for one, want to move to Merida one day.
      It’s far enough from America and the west coast to hopefully avoid much of the fault line quakes that we will be experiencing soon. Hopefully to avoid a lot of the coastal flooding too.
      Anyhow, love what y’all do and thank you for sharing your lives with us!

    “We didn’t do anything wrong, and that was enough.”
    I don’t think a lot of Americans realize the gravity and importance of that statement.

    I absolutely love you guys. You are both so kind, funny and full of life.
    As for safety, I think we as a whole are kind of accepting of the violence that happens in our own country, but fearful of it happening elsewhere. Bad things happen everywhere, no place is immune to violence. However, if you act smart and dont place yourself in situations that could cause bad results, you are safe. When you look at the violence in america and compare it to mexico. America is off the charts.
    You both stay safe, happy and healthy. Keep the wonderful uploads coming!! You guys are wonderful!

Road rage is out of control 😟 I'm back to working in the office 3-days a week, when on the Highway, I don't look at anyone, get out of their way if I'm going to slow (even if I am doing 70mph on a 60mph section). I think being aware of your surrounding's applies to anywhere you go. Keep having fun and sharing with us unfortunate people that have to work in an office 🤣🤣🤣😉😉😉😘😘😘

    While we were in Merida in May ( you guys were in the US I think) there were two shootings in Tulum, and innocent bystanders were involved on the streets, in the daylight. We were given the shake down by the local police in Playa Del Carmen and accused of speeding and demanding cash...all very dark and illegal. The Tulum of today is not the Tulum of years ago....the more tourists that come and start looking for drugs the worse places can get. I love the safety of Merida. Have fun guys

    I work consistently online with confidential information so I can't work on a laptop in public and thus co-working spaces aren't ideal for me. My concern about spending a week or more in Tulum is not having adequate internet access. Can you speak to that concern? I hope to see you guys when I get to Merida next month. I'll be in Mexico for a few months. Smooches!

    • @TravelWTravis
      @TravelWTravis  3 года назад +1

      That's so interesting and obviously something we don't have to consider! Our AirBnb had great and reliable internet, so we'd probably just recommend making sure to read the reviews for wherever you're looking at staying and make sure the internet is strong (and consistent). We also stayed in town as opposed to the beach, and think the internet is probably a bit more reliable there, but double check that with someone with more Tulum experience than us!! Have an awesome trip though!!

I know these are tough questions but I am starting to wonder what I am going to do. Thanks.

      Hey Eric! I'm not Travis or David, but I just moved to Merida last week as a single person. Pick 3 places overseas that you would like to move to and search Facebook groups. You will find a group for all of them. There are people in those groups who are like you and others who made the move to guide you. I wanted to retire here, so I got here early, LOL. • @TravelWTravis
      @TravelWTravis  3 года назад

      Hey there! We'd love to have a conversation, and we tried responding to the comments yesterday with a little context, but found out pretty quickly people didn't want to actually engage as much as yell things at us.
      It's an incredibly complex and complicated issue, and one that we've spent a tremendous amount of time thinking and talking about. If you watched our RUclips channel, we discuss it at length and feel we're creating a community where people are learning more about places they might not otherwise have been exposed to, and hopefully are seeing our example of engaging and supporting local communities. We believe strongly that travel is a great way to open people's minds to our similarities as humans and helps erase national boundaries that can be beneficial to everyone, but obviously acknowledge the fundamental inequalities which exist in the system in which we participate. Is the answer to not travel at all? Or only travel to rich countries? Where do we draw the line on who is on whose land? Aren't most of us on stolen land, and weren't we also on stolen land if we had stayed in Los Angeles?
      We love learning and hearing different perspectives and if you'd like to comment back or send us an email, we'd appreciate it!

    After 35y in the US and with COVID and the subsequent closure of the company I was working for, I decided to move back at least to sail through the election/insurrection/total madness. It became just to stressful. I found a Mexico dealing with its problems just like in any other country, except I didn't 'find' the 'violence' that is advertised daily in the US by countless media sources. Now, I read about terrible shootings taking place in places traditionally immersed in drug cartel turf wars, like the state of Tamaulipas or Michoacan. It is horrible with raw violence in plain view. But... like you guys say, it is drug related. Period. I was in Tulum a couple of weeks ago and didn't see anything violent at all. I saw patrols of the National Guard and Federal Police on the street, just like you see cops patrolling in any US city. It was perfectly safe. Just stay out of the heavy party clubs and bars and stay away from drugs and you will be safe!

    According to El Diario del Yucatan in Merida, since the local Tulum police have behaved so badly....arresting a gay couple for kissing on the beach and killing an El Salvadoran woman ion a separate incident.....that the entire police force was fired and replaced by the state police. Maybe what you experienced was the new push to clean house. Funny thing about people's perception of danger. People here in Merida are a little bit like Americans in that they usually advise against travel within Mexico and especially Quintana Roo. Like Americans they are just basing their opinions on scary news stories that might be true but don't tell the whole story. I agree with you 100% that if you stay away from drugs and drugees you will reduce your chances of a bad experience down to being overcharged or getting hit while you're filming in the middle of the road.

    I think there’s a big difference in law-enforcement between Mexico and the US, for one I don’t think Mexico has qualified immunity that protects bad officers 👮‍♀️ like in the US and therefore US police feel like They can bully people, especially minorities.
    Second, I believe there is a deep-seated racism that permeates in the US law enforcement world that goes back decades if not centuries 🤷🏻‍♂️
    People have been saying this for decades and not until now when it’s been documented by videos on phone cameras that we see the true reality of police brutality in the US. 😕

    I have property in Tulum and I can tell you if you tried to resist complying with the Federal police like the overwhelming majority who make the news clips in the US do. You will be hating life for sure. The lesson is in any country if you are stopped by the police comply and you won't die. Content wise a very weak video.

      Comments regarding safety in Mexico, especially comments comparing personal safety in the USA with personal safety in Mexico should be based on information gathered from legitimate news sources. Or at the very least, one should understand Spanish well enough to be able to engage Mexicans themselves in frank discussions regarding how they feel regarding their personal safety.
      Anyone who follows Mexican news sources would question the validity of noting number of murders in the USA without a mention of the violence in Mexico.
      I would wonder about the ability of these utubers and the commenters to communicate and understand Spanish.
      To me, if you can’t follow the news or talk with the locals in the native language, I don’t see the value of making a comparison between Mexico and the USA.
      The area of discussion here, the Yucatán peninsula, is relatively free of cartel violence.
      Cartel violence, however, is not an issue when discussing personal safety. The issue is street crime, that is gangs and gangsters. Crime is rampant in Mexico and the police are very corrupt. The shakedown for money (la mordida)is a normal part of daily life for Mexicans. They pay that and go on with their day. That is the least of their problems.
      The police are frequently involved in kidnapping and extortion along with many other illegal activities.
      Myself, I have been following current events in Mexico since the arrival of cable in 1983. At that time, there was one Spanish station, S.I.N, which eventually became Univision.
      Today there are limitless sources of information regarding current events in Mexico.
      To those who are contemplating a move to Mexico, I would suggest that you learn the language prior to your move by seeking out Spanish language newspapers and news programs to both be able to speak to your new neighbors and to help you decide if Mexico is a safe place to throw down roots.
      Not to be argumentative, but I wish these videos would steer clear of comparisons and just discuss their experiences without making value judgments regarding topics like personal safety.

    Mmmm, safe while you were on bicycles. I have heard so many horror stories of gringos in vehicles paying through the nose to be let go...so, no physical violence, but financial rip offs galore...just do not get a car while living in Mexico
