This is a topic that is never really resolved as everyone seems to have their own opinion. I agree with your assessment, and knuckle height has always been a good standby as well. My current setup is knuckle height, but then you have striking anvils which are better at knee or thigh height. Thanks for the video!

Very informative Roy. Covered all aspects well. For me I found at fist height I was always bending over no matter what I was working on. I have since raised it to just above wrist and I find I don’t bend over nearly as much. Has helped with my dexterity a whole bunch and can spend more time at the anvil and less coffee breaks. Again well said and thanks. 👍🏼

Great explanation Roy!! I set my anvil using my knuckles as a guide.I am a slight bit higher so I do not have to bend over. That really hurts my back. I will be doing all kinds of work during the learning process. After a while I may change it if necessary. Wayne

Great points. I'm going to make a new stand for my 100 lb anvil. It needs raised up about 4".

I agree ,Roy. Each smith will have to adjust the height of his, or her anvil to their individual needs and size. I do a lot of work at the vise, and have found the same height adjustment is needed there as well.

I have been using the knuckle height for my anvil and have always wondered how you and others are able to use your third hand to hold stock on the anvil surface. You just answered my question. I make some tools, coat racks, curtain hold backs and lots of hooks. Also reproduction items for Drake Well, trivets, early lighting and things for cooking at the fireplace or over the open fire.

Mine was set as discussed but found was giving me elbow problems so was advised to raise to prevent this and is now where my palm lays flat on the face and have found this a great improvement with less elbow pain but we're all different and if it works for you go with it

Knuckle hight seems to work best so far for the general work, I use other tools to bring the working surface higher is needed for finer work.

I defineatly wouldnt want it set up so id have to lean over any at all. That kills my back in minutes...left overs from being blessed with learning to walk again in 93. So the ASO i use is on a table at work sitting right at 40in. Seems a bit to high if i have to move material but seems oh for the more detailed work. That said im very new at this and work w what you got is the rule. Lol
    On a side note
Ive noted several people comment over Glen at GSTongs and the japanese style of sitting while at the anvil. So id like to throw this out. Tractor Supply company sells a Tractor seat stool/ chair. Its a cast seat representative of an old tractor seat. Its set up on a long screw and is hight adjustable and swivels 360. I do use it while im working cuz of my back, i switch in and out from standing and sitting as its set at the right hight to do that. Just thought id throw that out there for those who may not have 25 yr old backs any longer lol
    Thanks for sharing Mr. Roy.
    Blessings to you now,
    Crawford out

Thank you a lot! I have the same Anvil! I was amazed, it is looking like my anvil, lol. Is it 125 kg and the sound is very bright?
I have a new log out of good old german oak and it is definitely to high. A few days ago I took the bark off and planed it with a drawknife. After that I flamed and oiled the log. Now I need to make a fixture for the Anvil and a log clamp/steel strip. Under the Anvil I have a thick hard rubber mat for washing machines.

Wow. You are tall. My main anvil is set at 30.5". My little anvil is set at 36" for doing fine work. My striking anvil is set at 28". Just what works for me at 5'6".

Less than perfect vision dictates some working heights I need. But regular whacking is awesome nuckle high.

I have it set about an inch higher than my knuckles mostly because I received it that way but my back isn’t usually my friend so it doesn’t hurt and i do intricate work and heavy hammering and work great for both.

In my younger years, I was just shy of 5'11", with time, I'm about 5'10".... I knew you were a man to "look up to", lol. I typically do smaller work, so right at, or just shy of knuckle hight, is where my anvil set

  • @ericjason5773

I got mine just a tad over my knuckles. When i first started i set my anvil at about wrist height if not just over. I noticed i was getting a lot of elbow pain and that is when i looked into anvil height. Now however i get a lot of knee pain. I am kind of long in the legs and when i hold a piece between my legs i have to crouch with my knees in an awkward position.
I have found that the anvil is a tool. And like any tool, however it suits your purpose is the right way.

I like to set my anvil up quite a bit higher than most guys. I’m a big guy as it is (6’5”), so leaning into my work really hurts my back. I also don’t do a lot of forging on large stock. 5/8” is the majority of what I work with. I keep mine about an inch higher than knuckle height.

  • @brianmorrow6355

My anvil is about an inch or so higher than my knuckles. I spend half my time wishing it was taller and the other half satisfied so who knows

Brian Morrow same here. At knuckle height I still find myself bending over slightly. I don’t use many hardie tools, as I do most of my work with different hammers

  • @shadetreeforge
    @shadetreeforge 5 лет назад +1

Another thing to possibly consider is if you do a lot of work held in tongs and you hold it between your legs, the top of the anvil should be no higher than crotch height so the work lies flat on the anvil. Because if you have to stand on your tip toes to do this you will be off balance and could injure yourself if you slip and fall. Not to mention your work will suffer as well.

Brand new blacksmith here...journyman framer+ lifelong musician..... "professional drummer"....In drum core I learned to keep my snare at belt hight and make sure when the bead of my sticks contact the drumhead my elbows are at 90° angles...
I don't like extending my arms past the 90° mark unless I'm two handed on a maul while chopping wood, or a sledgehammer driving steaks into the ground...
I also am a short guy, with long arms....
    Oh and Im near sighted.....
Ive tried the knuckle thing.....for anvil hight.... I'm bending over and screwing up my back constantly....
I need my anvil at the hight of my belt.

I took my main hammer (2 1/2lb) and brought it down till the striking face was level then lowered it a inch and marked the wall and measured. I subtracted my anvil’s height and cut a 18” diameter spruce round and rail road spiked my anvil to it. The new chain cut the round perfect!

Christ Centered Ironworks _I meant it was a lengthy way to explain how to Judge what height your anvil at when it’s as simple as putting it at waste level but ok I guess..._
Also another 53 seconds and you would be hitting the 10 min mark! _should’ve thrown in a minute long outro_
