As for their music, it is pretty remarkable that they were able to write great, ever-lasting songs in as many styles as they could without seeming or sounding phony, contrived or artificial. And I love that Bruce's voice seems like the higher-end of Paul's vocal registry. A match made in heaven, the three of them!
Weller was on a massive roll, and once he stopped it, I would say he found he couldn't start it again. Thus is the fickle nature of great art. Don't mess with the recipe.

Still going strong my favourite band growing up during "The Troubles"S that was Belfast Northern Ireland during late 70s early 80s it took me out off the mayhem during these dark days thank you Madness ,Specials ,Bad Manners,The Beat etc

I remember my dad used to tell me about the time Bruce Foxton came into his workshop and got my dad to mend his Merc, he's a huge Jam fan - said it was one of the best moments of his life, apparently Foxton's a really nice guy too.
Cool story! Always nice to know someone you carry a torch for is a decent human being.😊

I've seen Bruce Foxton 3 times always by mistake. Twice when he was playing bass for Stiff Little Fingers and once with The Rhythm Sisters. With the latter there were two young mods in parkas and stay-pressed trousers shouting "Bruce! Bruce!" between songs.
I was in my local pub, in Weybridge, with my mate. 1981. We were sat at a table, when two geezers sat at the table with us. I looked up. It was Bruce and his estate agent.
I one went to the moon and saw Bruce Foxton,he had a second job as an astronaut.

It is really satisfying that I can always dig deeper into British 60s, 70s, 80s music to find out a new pop/rock band to fall in love with, like The Jam (the previous one was Buzzcocks) and I have found them only quite recently (January this year). Cannot stop listening to them!

Oh heck! What a tune play full blast and remember The Jam and all there fantastic tunes but TSC developed and in a way I'm grateful to this day for all of PWs achievements the greatest songwriter ever

Totally agree! The man is a giant! I love this because in my head it is a Mod Classic! A bit of R N' B, a lot of soul and an iceing of Rock!

This last song from one of Britain’s best ever bands…….these guys were different gravy….The jam still being played today which says it all really.

When you read the lyrics, it sounds like it's describing him leaving the Jam behind for the Style Council.

Not a song of defeat but of hope and redemption.....
I'll never forget in 1985 American MTV playing this and I saw it! It was probably aired only once but I saw it .......and FUCKING FLIPPED OUT. There was nowhere to go afterward except to start a band. Which I goddamn did.

Bruce Foxton does an amazing vocal impersonation of weller
In this song, I get confused. Sounds like Weller not Foxton in the background vocals, but that overlay is impossible live.
That was one of the saddest things about the last year of The Jam; the dismissal of Bruce Foxton's vocals. I thought they were an essential part of the group's sound. This song, like almost all of the songs on 'The Gift' and the last few singles, features only Weller (and here, the extra girl vocal). If this had been pre-'82, Foxton would've sung one of the lead verse parts and the harmony on the chorus. Still, his bass was as powerful and melodic as ever.
@@yandosan Top of the Pop songs were mimed so it's a realistic possibility it was Paul's voice just dubbed over Bruce's miming to make it look believable.

Remember playing this over and over on our hi fidelity and my dad saying that's number one? There's no bloody tune?? As a kid of ten I didn't know what he was on about...needless to say he bought the bloody Rennie and renata single?

@@steffanhoffmann8937 What? The Jam catalog holds up with The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks & The Who. That's not any opinion. Also, none of those bands or their mates have stayed as relevant as long as Weller has. Almost five decades on, Weller's still churning out good tunes.

This was The Jam's last single and farewell TOTP appearance before calling it a day. The piano and brass sections of this song does sound like The Style Council which would become Paul Weller's next project soon after.
The "Rythm section" he employed were Beggar & Co. who were the same crew who put the Soul into Spandau Ballet.........
Can't believe it's 30 years ago this week that 'Beat Surrender' was number 1.

Last track by the brilliant The Jam. Most underrated UK band of all time compared to all the other 80's bands, so many great songs, Bitterest pill, David Watts, down in the tube station at midnight, smithers Jones are my favourites

My dad was a nurse in Edinburgh.
Bruce was playing in SLF and when he took his bass off during the end of the gig he hit his head.Went to hospital and my dad gave him stitches.My dad got an autograph from Bruce for me.V nice guy I was told.

Big in the UK, not so much in the States. No Jam singles charted int he top 100 in the US. Great band though.
I saw them on 2 dates @ The Palladium in NYC...The Jam ruled.Why they didn’t go over big in the states I never understood why...I saw the cover of “In The City “ in a record shop and I was hooked....I became an Anglophile according to a real good friend.

As much as I love The Jam, this song and this video. Poor Paul looks absolutely lost without his guitar. And he couldn't exactly cut a rug. Theres another video of him performing Beat Surrender live on The Tube. He's armed with his axe and looks much more comfortable.

Looks ok to me- just a little self conscious of the camera . Guess its awkward miming to songs that have belt to them when theres probably some tinny speakers playing and the camera is on you . Dance style is the same as one of TSC first releases Speak Like a Child and he looks like hes having a lot more fun there .

Weller wrote the majority of the stuff but you can't deny that Buckler and Foxton were just as important. Together they were tighter than 2 coats of paint! And then Foxton graced SLF as well. Great times!

@@PeggysuzTwitterI'm pretty sure she sent in an audition along with hundreds of other girls to do backing vocals on the song when she was only 17 and Paul picked her to sing on the track, it's rumoured they were in some sort of relationship at the time and she also appeared on early style council tracks

I think Paul was right to call it quits, if he felt there was nothing more he could have done with the Jam, so be it. Imagine if they had gone on all through the 80s into the 90s. The Jam wouldn't be the band you remember them as, if they had continued.

+James Grange well put James and the way I feel about most rock bands that hang around for decades doing songs in their 50's and beyond that they wrote in their early 20's (or earlier in some cases) yes, they aren't the band you remember them as.....
You could say that about the Beatles, the best thing a band can do is evolve like they did

You can tell that Weller couldn't be bothered anymore. He wanted out asap by then. The fact that he wasn't carrying or playing his trademark Rickenbacker was his way of telling us what the future would look like. I was 15 years old when this was #1 and I was gutted, but he's gone on to do so many quality songs since. And he's still doing it. Well done, brother.
Agree. He’s even said this particular song was kinda of a goodbye to his older style and a nod toward moving into another direction than The Jam.

Have you seen The Style Council 'movie' Jerusalem? There's a part in a church where Weller says "Let's do a song!" and it made me think (back then) that Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney) could play Weller in a bio movie :)
