REVIEW of the SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 EF-M on the CANON M50 / Worth buying?

- There's a new wide-angle lens in town for EF-M mount cameras - the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 DC DN. This lens is also available for Sony E-Mount and Micro 4/3 cameras, but I'll be reviewing the lens with the APS-C Canon M50. I'll also compare and contrast the Sigma against the lens I've been using on my M50 - Canon's 11-22 f/4-5.6. The Canon lens can also shoot at 16mm, so is there any point in owning the Sigma? Does it improve video quality on the M50? Check out my review to find out.

Thanks for this review. I couldnt decide whether to get the 11-22 but you convinced me to skip that one in favor of the Sigma 16. Have you tried the other Sigma lenses vs their Canon equivalent?
Todd Dominey Timestamps. 👏👏👏
So the sigma 16mm attaches do the M50 without and adapter lenses ?
Hello Sir,
I will be upgrading my lens for my M50 by selling of my existing 18-150EFM lens.
Purpose: Landscape, Portrait, VLOG
Please help me out what to pick without cutting much into my pocket?
Few I have shortlisted.
Canon EF-M 11-22MM
Canon EF-M 22MM
Sigma 16MM F 1.4
Sigma 30MM F1.4
Do you remember what lens you shot this with?
That sigma 16mm is one of the best crop lenses ever made. Thanks for showing it to us with your M50!
The Everyday Dad Thanks!
M50 s image quality tho..... (i don’t like it and unfortunately i have one)
I put this and the Sigma 30mm 1.4 on the Canon M6 II and loving it.
Its a great combo for sure!
The Everyday Dad Is here... NICE!!!
So stoked about this lens and I love this review! I feel like we could watch it with no sound and get all the info we need from the smile on your face while talking about the Sigma 😊Such a game-changer for vlogging on the M50!
This is one of the best lens reviews I've watched on RUclips. Nice job!
Out Here Having A Pint Thanks!!
would you prefer the digital IS of the M50 or a stabilizer in your editing software like davinci resolve stabilizer?
Awesome video! Thanks for kind sharing & comparison! I just own a M50 mark II & also got the sigma f1.4 16mm lens. So excited to make more videos! 🤩👍👋🌟
hi Dr. I hope you wanna help me with this situation. I own a M50 mark II too and really want to buy the sigma 16mm but in the section of questions and answers the seller said that is not compatible with the mark II so i wanna know if you already have some problema with the lens? thanks a lot for your time.
@@homeless3 Are you really sure with your claims?
Thanks for this outstanding overview. I bought the 16mm and truly feel it's one of the best purchases I have ever made. Feels like a 2k piece of glass. Absolute game changer for the modest M50. Just buy it!
Fantastic video! Super useful and well made comparisons, honestly one of the best pieces of content I've seen on this lens so far (and RUclips is full of 'em). Props!
Probably the most underrated reviews for a M50 lens, especially a sigma one. Great job and great quality (:
Koby Somozo Thanks Koby! :)
Your set, lighting, and sound is perfect! Your videos are so comfortable and relaxing to watch. Great job! And thanks for the video, I'm looking at this lens now :)
What a great review! I’ve been gathering up all the info I could find on this combo (Sigma 16mm on Canon m50). Well done!
This is the review I've been waiting for! About to order one now!
Great review! I really appreciate the side-by-side comparisons. I just purchased this lens for my Canon M50 and absolutely love it! It's a great focal length for the type video I shoot, and the performance in low-light compared to the kit lens is amazing.
lovely video - literally i'd love this set up for travelling commuting everyday set up really. I had the 30mm when i was using Sony but always wanted them to make this for M mount. really opens up the system a bit for the enthusiasts.
One of the most under-rated channels out there.
Thanks man, by the way you have a really deep wonderful voice.
Thanks :)
I have watched many lens reviews but this one is the best one yet. Amazing detail with examples to match. I was sold on the Sigma the day I saw this and I keep coming back.
Finally someone did an ACTUAL REVIEW of this awesome lens! i've been thinking of getting this someday when it was announced. That 1.4 is so crisp! i was gonna ask if the Tiffen 77mm ND filter will make a vignette, but saw that you had the same ND filter as i did. awesome! i'm gonna use that mainly for video someday with my M50 + Ronin SC! Can you make more videos using this lens outside 😁👍 like a real world test or maybe a cinematic video using it. I'm subscribed so i'll be able to watch you use this lens.
Jasper Tordilla Vlogs Thanks! Glad you liked the review. I think the Sigma looks really crisp as well. I’ve used the 11-22mm w/ the M50 on a Ronin SC and it works beautifully. At only half a pound heavier, I would imagine the Ronin should perform just as well.
That was a great review. I like how you are pretty idle in the comparison videos. It makes it easy to analyze the image quality. Thank you.
Thank you for helping me making my mind up. I was facing the same dilemma of ditching M50 for a EOS-r or RP due to the lack of affordable low-light lenses for it. I'm keeping the M50 now and buying this lens.
Great comparison. This was really helpful in deciding which one to get!
Best review of this lens in a straight “apples to apples” comparison. Thanks for helping make up my mind on the Sigma. 👍🏼
This is indeed the best comparison video between the Sigma 16mm F/1.4 and the Canon's 11-22 f/4-5.6, great details and accurate analysis that only a professional can present. Thank you very much for helping me choose which one to buy.
This is a great review and so informative. I loved how much you showed and explained the lens. Thank you!
What a great review and presentation...absolutely loved it.
I tested the Sigm 56 mm in my M50 in the PDN Expo last october in NY and I fell in love with it. I have owned the Sigma 16mm for Sony A6500 and I enjoyed shooting with it. The 56mm is in my wishlist right now. Thanks for this magnificent review
First of your videos that I have stumbled upon, this is another level comparison video, incredibly informative with very fair and equal tests to really show differences! Wish I could have you compare everything I ever look at buying 😆 , subbed immediately
Hey, Todd! I like your series about ef-m lenses. Thank you.
This was a great video. I was looking at sigma 18-35 mm f/1.8 Art DC HSM but now I feel like this is the lens I need for my set up.
Perfect timing for this video! Thank you, great review!
Wow that was so helpful. The comparisons were so great. thanks for the effort here.
Thank you for creating such a detailed video. I was thinking of my first camera , the same one you are using , the canon M50. I was deciding which lens to choose, you have clarified your opinion very well with back up data.
Would the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 be a drastic difference from my stock EOS M50 lens? I Game Streaming with vlogs from time to time but wondering if its that much difference??
Nice review! This will definitely be my next lens purchase for my M50.
Thank you so much, Todd! Such a helpful video for someone trying to decide whether or not to purchase the Sigma lens - I'm definitely sold now! haha beautiful video
great video, watched after making my order for the 16mm and i’m glad I placed the order now!
Thanks for the review, I was trying to decide if this lens was worth it and you have shown me that it is.
Great review. I'm hoping to move from APSC-DSLR to Mirrorless in the next years and lenses like these make the APSC mirrorles system more mature and interesting. And they also make the corporations to invest more in crop mirrorless bodies, so I hope that in the future, those of us, who dont want or can spend in FF, will have great options.
Now you can upgrade to the m6 kii or wait to see if there will be a m5 mkii or an m60.
Again, great work. I wish the best for your channel.
Hey, this video is awesome. Super informative and easy to watch too. Keep up the good work! Just bought an m.50 to improve our content and learning lots about it. Will be following what you do :)
Your videos are so great. Went down a rabbit home if your sigma reviews. Definitely subscribed!
Wow. I love the side by side comparisons. I have an M50 and will be getting the Sigma 16mm.
Great video and comparison Todd! really helped me to decide which lens to buy on my M50.
Great video. I am glad I have just ordered the Sigma 16mm for new my Canon EOS M6 Mark ii. I can't wait for it to arrive.
Great review , thanks for your thoughts and show to us this Sigma lens!
Seriously that was probably one of the best lens reviews I have seen in a long time. Thank you very much you made me buy the sigma 16mm for my Canon M5 I was actually going to sell it because I own two Sony A7R3s which I love but my wife and I went camping and she used my little cannon and the pictures came out really nice I was surprised so I now own the sigma 16mm as of today I haven't had a chance to take it out but after watching your review I'm going to get to it. Thank you again
Review done right! Great comparison between the 2 lenses.
Thanks Todd, loved your review side-by-side... good.... this wasn't a lens i wanted but seeing it LIVE outside with the ND filter, I am definately getting it
Wow this is such a good review, thank you!
Thank you so much for this review. Very comprehensive and helpful. Will definitely get this for my M50. Btw, you remind me of Colin Firth 😊
This was honestly a great video! Very crisp and clear :D
Great job! This really helped me
Glad it helped!
First video of yours I’ve seen - really nice job. Will definitely be back :)
As an owner of an EOS M10, having Sigma making such nice glass for this mount is really good news!
RealBesty Thanks!
Very insightful review. Love it and subscribed!!!
Great comparison/review! Thanks for making this video!
Tq very much for giving me such great knowledge on cameras and lenses. I just start learning and my first camera is a canon m6 mkii. Love all your videos
I *love* my Sigma 16mm f1.4! -Color, contrast, & crisp detail make stills that just *pop*.
I use it on my Canon M50 and I also have the Canon10-22mm & 17-55mm f2.8 (the later of which stays on the camera by default) so those two other lenses overlap (more or less) with the focal range of the Sigma but, the Sigma blows the other two away for beautiful images!
It’s the only prime lens I own so far and it’s the kind of lens that you want to go out and shoot with for hours. Sooo happy with it!
Thank you for the great review!
This is awesome, just pulled the trigger on the Sigma. Was going to get the Canon until i saw this video. Great stuff!
Thank you for this, I just picked up the 16mm for my M50, this video was a great comparison!
Thank you for the examples with this lens, it was really helpful!
Wow. I’m totally new to the game of cameras and I was close to going Sony but this just made me a cannon guy. Thanks for your no BS approach. It’s refreshing
Thank you so much Todd! It helps me chose the wise decision in buying lens.
Thanks for your test. I just ordered the 50mm 1.8 Canon lens with a booster adapter and I first will wait on what results I'm gonna make with that setup on my M6.
Great comparison and quality work! Thanks for sharing.
I just ordered this lens to help with noise in my limited lighting setup, as I don’t have the space to add more lights. I’m insanely impressed it was able to drop all the way to 200 ISO. I was expecting maybe 2000. The lens arrives in two days, so I’m even more excited now!
And I’m not sure if maybe the Canon lens was a bit out of focus in that test, or if it’s just because the Sigma lens is that good, but the Sigma clips were a lot clearer, too. Your hair, facial hair, and different areas of your shirt were basically like going from 1080p to 4k in that comparison.
Edit: The lens is a RIDICULOUS improvement in my somewhat low-light setup. I use a Canon M200 and I was able to go from f/4.5 1/60 6400 ISO with the kit lens to f/1.4 1/125 800 ISO with the Sigma. The highlights are much more balanced on my skin, the noise was greatly reduced from the drastic reduction in ISO, and the overall clarity difference is like going from a C to an A. INSANE value for $400.
Great review thank you Todd.
I have purchased the Sigma 16mm f1.4 ef-m and have used it on my last three videos with my Canon M50. OMG it’s transformed my videos! So impressed 😎👍🏻 I have already purchased the 56mm and I’m ordering the 30mm versions
his voice is a gift. watching his m50 mark 2 impression video and starts like the voice...
Great comparison. I just bought the m50 and I was considering the sigma lens so this was a perfect video. Thank you.
Great comparison, Todd. Thanks for putting so much effort into this analysis... The Sigma is now my next purchase.
Stu Preece you’re welcome!
Vantastic review. We're looking to upgrade from our standard lens, and this might be the one for our M50 camera :) Thanks for the info and we subbed! Love what you do and how you do it. Love from Leon and Monique at VanTastic Traveling
thank you for this, it was informative and a lot of help. im going to purchase the 16mm :)
I am solo travel vlogger with a Canon M50 that I love dearly. This was a brilliant review, I have been thinking of upgrading to Canon EF-M 11-22mm however, it doesn't offer that blurry background which means spending more money and adding focal lens Canon EF-M 22mm and that means three total lenses (kit lens, 11-22mm, 22mm). Your review helped me decide to save up for the Sigma 16mm and thanks ever so much. I have just subbed and thanks once again
This Sigma is the lens that I constantly default to when taking pictures indoors because of the low f-stop. I also like the build quality of the lens. I like some bulk in my hand when holding my camera compared to the stock prime lens. Great quality lenses by Sigma!
Excellent review! Thank you! Lately im in a dilema if im going to go for the 11-22mm or the sigma 16mm but after watching your review now im sure of what i am going to buy.
Thank you! We have been struggling with the m50 getting super grainy footage in our vlogs. Might have to get this now :)
This is a great video! I own the 11-22 and have been considering the Sigma 16mm since before I purchased my 11-22. When I stumbled across it I was pleasantly surprised that it is actually more of a comparison between these 2 lenses than a straight review of the 16mm. You might want to add that to the end of your title that it has an 11-22mm comparison, just a thought. I probably would have watched it sooner :) Thanks again have a great day!
I need this sigma 16mm lens . I have been shooting my videos on my channel using the kit lens but after watching your review , Im sold. This is a must have for canon m50
This video was very helpful and sold me on this lens. I recently got the M50 and am looking for good lenses for talking head videos. My room is pretty dark so this will really be helpful for me. Thanks for the video!
thanks for the review. going to drive to the store now and get one
Really great review. Lots of great information, and nice vlog. Just subbed 👌 Be interesting to see how this lens performs on the 32mp new m6mkii
Love the review! I just moved from a light studio to a darker studio and now I have to order a new lens becuase I want to maintaine the darker feeling of the studio, so this lens could be a good one! Also, can you please make a review of the setup you are using with the lights and evrything in this video. I think your studio looks W O W!!!
Thank you Todd for this comprehensive review. +1 for Sigma 16mm f1.4 buy for my m50.
thank you for this review, I'm in a situation where I'm thinking about buying a new lens for the M50 and I'm excited about this lens
such a well made video. u deserve loads of subscribers
Thank you very much for this FANTASTIC review, definitely I'm going to buy this lens.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Really Helpful Video. Thank you. 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Within 5 seconds of starting the video, I looked in the description to see if you had a link to your gear. It looks like the link is broken, but I was so impressed by the rest of your website that I came back to subscribe. Then I watched the rest of the video lol
Thank you for catching that and letting me know! I was moving some things around and forgot about that old gear link. I'll get that fixed. You can see everything here if you haven't found it already: kit.co/todddominey
Man I really loved this review. I can’t wait to get the Sigma
This was the info I was looking for. Very good review and comparison for video 👍
PS look into the EFM 28mm F/3.5 Macro IS lens. Good for close range and general use. Better than 11-22mm F/4? 🤔
okay i'm sold. Thanks for the side by side comparison.
I am thankful that I found this video, it was a very thorough and intuitive video.
Martin Thanks Martin. I have a review of the Sigma 30mm EF-M coming up soon!
Thank you! I’m looking into getting the sigma lens soon
Hello Todd, thank you for your video is well put together and very informative. We do have a question, with the Sigma lens on the Canon M50 are we able to use a higher FPS. We believe with the kit lens using 1080p you can use 50fps tops. Thank you again :)
Very informative, thanks Todd!
Great video very informative easy to understand and sold me on buying Sigma
i am planning to buy the sigma 16mm for my canon m50 as well. and probably do my own review. glad that i found your video.
Great video. Thank you for creating it as it’s a choice between these 2 lenses for my next purchase.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review. I am interested in upgrading and I want to be able to film anywhere in nearly any lighting conditions. Years ago I borrowed a Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 for a trip across Asia and I loved how clear and how much contract the lens had wide open.
Video Idea Suggestion: "Can you Vlog by Moonlight?", and compare the 16mm F1.4 to a Sigma 24mm F1.4 speed boosted to F1.0.
This is the best review I watched for Sigma 16mm with M50
Nice review. Going to get this soon and the 30/56mm in the next couple months for portraits..
Fantastic comparison. I have the 11-22mm and 32mm for now, not sure I'll upgrade the 11-22mm as I already have a 1.4 32mm and don't vlog. Good to know how much better the 16mm is though 👌👍
That was so interesting, thank you so much Todd!
