@@liamfoote7164yeah walking dead was much more egregious being a 1 time print run with no possibility of reprints the ip chosen was very poor match in tone very dark and takes place in modern day with a fantasy element yes but nothing fantastical also it had been losing viewers for awhile so brought very few people into the game and alienated existing players into leaving the game its biggest audience were people who were buying them to resell

My biggest issue is art style at this point. Street Fighter, Transformers, Walking Dead, Jurassic Park, all of those fit terribly aesthetically. 40k and LotR cards had art that fit and didn't feel like weird promo art the way the others tend to.

    • @atevalve

@@Jhit123 Depends on the art style. Honestly it's mostly the "hyper realistic" stuff that falls into an uncanny valley for me that I don't like. Most invitational cards have a bit of that vibe too, but these universes beyond cards have often been much worse

I totally agree, if they make this, i wish art would be MTG look a like, and ofcourse the story how they fit in.. For example - Star Wars would be insanely good fit as LOTR, but DC comic characters aint gonna do it for me.

The fact that Lara Croft doesn't have Explore is the biggest miss for me. She needs (specific) cards in the GY to get any benefit from her attack trigger,, and having a way to put those legendary cards in your GY (or in your hand to then put in the GY for the case of those Kamigawa Channel Lands), would have made her a big win design-wise (let alone flavor-wise), As she was printed, it really doesn't feel like you're building to make her strong you're building to make her function, which makes her feel super clunky.

My favorite way that Wizards have done UB is like the Street Fighter and Transformers sets: flavorful cards that are powerful in their own right. Although the Commander deck method and the whole set method are cool, we end up with staple level cards that make the flavor weird. I.e., u guess I'm ok with someone bringing a Chun-li deck or a Optimus Prime deck, but i'm not ok with everyone bringing an Orcish Bowmaster deck.

Lara's theme of legendary artifacts and places (lands) makes sense, however it tells only half of the character as those are directly tied to her being fit, combat elite soldier (or rather mercenary) which allows her to explore these legends. There needed to either be a 2nd Lara focusing on that or dual faced card or having merged the 2 concepts into one.

I think Lara Croft is pretty good flavour wise - she is raiding a tomb on attack by going into a graveyard and looting it. She takes a legendary artifact and keeps it, and also takes some treasure as well. Then later on you can use those artifacts that you stole. I guess with the lands she is finding undiscovered areas.

Now that we've laid the standard evaluations, I wonder how we're gonna be judging the (known) future Universes Beyond.
Cuz if it's just flavor > high fantasy from the IP, Fallout and AssCreed are kinda sitting on the C "Squint to make it fit in with the multiverse", tho if AssCreed leans more into Paliano/Italian-Assassin aesthetic maybe we're already half-way to B there. Tho it'll be VERY intimidating that AssCreed and FF are designated Modern-Legal sets so it'll probably be as big as LotR was.
Final Fantasy being named but in development till 2025 is the one we're all holding our breathe on, and with just how varied the entire settings have been High-Fantasy to Urban Fantasy to Practically Cyberpunk with Magitek and maybe everything in-between, ironically mirrors Magic already in how fast and loose it's "high fantasy setting" turned out. Wonder if we'll have just as much shenanigans with Garland knocking everyone down as with people being able to Suplex Trains and just punching Chaos to death.

Thing that I didnt like with the Jurassic Park secret layer is that its so rare in packs that its almost as exclusive as a secret layer, maybe more so. My area does not have collectors to-date, but the set boosters have a JP card 1 every 12 packs, which is more rare than a mythic, and that 1 in 12 could be a basic land. So seems like the Jurassic Park cards are limited to the "Whales" who are opening multiple boxes.

Yeah and Hunting Velociraptor is currently at this moment $60 - $80 every other card is within $5 - $8 which is good and the lands have gone down to $2 and less. Me personally I wished we got just all the cards at once like dr.who but instead of 4 packs it's just one. Everything is affordable and it looks like this set for Ixalan is gonna be one of their more profitable sets. The thing I hate is the emblem cards. Because they are gonna be rarer than serialized cards. Don't quote me but I think there's one emblem card in one pack out of 100.I would love to collect all the 20 emblem cards but not if it's gonna cost the same as a brand new car.

Now the cards that you can look at TCG Ian Malcolm, Welcome to..., Blue Loyal Raptor, and Owen Raptor Trainer were all under $8 on Nov 8-11. So besides 6 cards are at an affordable price. Now let's be honest 3 cards Savage Order, Ravenous Tyrannosaurus and Hunting Velociraptor are going to be Dino staples especially in Commander because those have the ability to make a dino commander deck like Gishath pop off we can all agree. The other two, Indoraptor and Indominus Rex are unique commanders so it's to be expected to be pricey. And finally Permission Denial is literally a blue players wet dreams basically a really good counter spell. I'm glad Seth came around on Street Fighter. Every card felt flavorful, a few of the cards are really powerful (Blanka was mentioned; Dhalsim is a CEDH viable commander), and even the less powerful ones are still really interesting.
I would've had Tomb Raider higher too; sure it's a bunch of reskins, but it feels well thought out, like every card is meant to be in a Lara Croft commander deck. She's a 3/4 first strike & reach that can recur legendary lands and artifacts, and the rest of the set is legendary lands and artifacts! And none of them overlap her keywords, so if you get Shadowspear and Bow of Nylea she'll have first strike, reach, deathtouch, lifelink, and trample! And Lara being a 3/4 and not getting killed by the Storms of Yamatai (Anger of the Gods reskin) is such a flavor win.
Plus the Shadowspear and Academy Ruins reprints are welcome. As far as reskin Secret Lairs are concerned, Tomb Raider is excellent.

If you want to get REALLY technical the Godzilla skins were the first look into universes beyond and those were well received because of the fact they were skins of magic cards. If you didn't want them the magic versions were right there.

Props to Crim for his arguments pushing Sreet Fighter to S. I had never bought a Secret Lair and wasn't intending to until SF came out. I grew up in arcades playing SF and the nostalgia effect was just too much for me to pass by. Plus, I absolutely love my Chun-Li deck and people at my LGS both love and fear it equally also!
Edit: Ratchet is the other good Transformer, it makes for a very nasty mono-white artifact/lifegain combo deck.

The street fighter SL was a great one for me. The Blanka commander deck is so easy to build so cheaply. Most of the deck is draft chaff lol.

Im not gonna lie, as a big Street Fighter fan, I can't imagine giving that drop higher than a C. The characters picked were definitely for nostalgia, and didn't even include a villain like Akuma or M. Bison, which is wild. The art was a letdown, with so many talented artists at Capcom it felt like such a miss not to have someone do some guest pieces. Ryu's design drops it a full letter grade on it's own, he definitely should be green and not red, and the fact that his design encourages you to kill is so comically out of character that it's almost funny. The rest of the characters had good and fun designs, but it's painfully clear that whoever designed it only played Street Fighter 2.

Blanka would not be able to throw hands with Urza, he would get stomped. You'd need secret lair: Dragonball or something to give Urza a fair fight. Maybe secret lair kirby but that would be a stomp in the other direction

@@jeffe2267 yeah but there's a big difference between a signal skin that is distributed digitally, and devoting a team to designing and play testing a set, hiring artists for the cards or purchasing the rights to pieces, printing, quality control, distribution. I think popularity will factor in a little bit more for that. And I would hope for more than just a secret Lair reskin.

This episode felt like "We gotta do a content" so they just hit record without looking into the subject before the show. Sure, everyone had prior experience with it, but a lot of what was said was factually incorrect. Reasons why things were put into tier lists were contradicting with each other, with the Walking Dead just slapped into B "because it had zombies in it".
The idea or reasons why a UB Tier list should even exist are questionable, but I feel it could have been executed better. Rating this episode with an F.

57:36 If you take only this sentiment and look at the tier list as-is.. That's pretty spot on, no? The further the release is from feeling like either Magic itself (LOTR, D&D) or its culture surrounding the game (WH40k), the lower the ranking becomes. Only DZIL stands out as being lower on the scale than expected there: pretty boomer but extremely on-point flavourwise with Ikoria. Just a curious observation :)

Personally I was disappointed that none of the game's characters got cards, but I wondered what non-players made of it.

    My Ratings:
Tomb Raider - C (meh all around)
Walking Dead - D (trash show, trash implementation for unqiue cards)
Stranger Things - D (trash fucking show and writing, trash fucking cards)
Arcane - D (amazing show, trash cards)
Godzilla - C (godzilla huge monster dino fight fantasy theme fail)
Street Fighter - A (flavor win and interesting cards even if they're largely not so good)
Fortnite - D (cards suck and weren't even right for the theme - correct art and demographic doesn't save this)
Warhammer - S (theme, power level, playability, art, etc basically all nailed - also maybe the best or close to the best commander decks of all time?)
Transformers - C (cool theme but... it isn't good enough to be a B since almost all the cards are straight up bad)
Lord of the Rings - S (hit hard basically across the board and fits into MTG thematically. nailed basically everything across the board - helps that it was a full big set to explore the theme)
Dungeons and Dragons - A (good theme, decent selection of cards, fits in-world. into the dungeon and overall card power hold this back) also to seth - old gnawbone, tiamat, tele circle, circle of dreams druid, lolth... there's actually good cards in AFR
Dr Who - B (despite theme being way wrong for MTG it's got a ton of interesting and pretty good cards. card design massively saves this because the theme is way way off)
Jurassic Park - B (theme is almost amazing... almost. cards are hit and miss)
Evil Dead - C (MEH. Ash isn't even legendary dude)
Dracula - D (ugh... more terrible garbage that failed theme here)
Creepshow- D (this is fine value and stuff but I hate cards that are hard to read...)
Princess Bride - A (mostly pretty good or at least playable cards, great theme, amazing art)
Average score is a C+ which is... about what I expected from universes beyond for me. It's not the worst but it's not good either. It's just... okay and I'm bound to like a couple things making it a C+ rather than a C. Meh lol

Crazy. I see the walking dead secret lair IP as being the gold standard (aside from the mechianical unquie debacle). S-teir! Then followed up with Godzilla and Jurrasic Park. Main reason I cannot stand D&D and lord of the rings is because it was a secret lair or a few cards sprinkled in a standard set...it because they were entire sets.

    • @magnusprime962

The biggest issue is that the decks are focused more on flavor than function. The 10th Doctor and Villains decks suffered from a lack of focus on a specific mechanic or set of mechanics. They threw in a bunch of different ones that didn’t always work together well. The best of the bunch was the Classic Doctors one, and even that didn’t always have the greatest synergy
