    I love these dyers, also Tiny Human Knits (she does 50g skeins as well!). She is in Canada but the shipping is worth it… and it comes to me in the USA quite quickly.

    Hi Eunice from a crazy sock knitter from Oz! Love you podcast! I have became a fan of Opal sock yarn recently and can't stop knitting all the colours. I haven't tried Must stash or Freckled whimsy, however, I have tried Desert vista Dyeworks and she has an amazing self-striping yarns. In Australia we also use WYS and I had the same experience with paintbox (I just through it in the bin as I hated it so much). I have bought a few years in a row Christmas striping year from The Cozy knitter (she is in Canada) and out of 100gr + mini I have managed to knit 2 pairs (for each of my daughters US 7 size) at lest two years in a row. It's an advent so you get 24 different stripes in 2 50gr skeins similar to freckled whimsey.

      Ooh thank you for the recs - and hello hello! :D Welcome!! Ahh, I have a Desert Vista Dyeworks skein waiting for me in my stash - I'll have to pull it out soon. I got the Freckled Whimsy christmas advent this year, but maybe next year I do the Cozy Knitter. Happy knitting!!

    A favorite topic of mine because sock knitting is my favorite 😍 Been building up my self striping yarn stash for a couple of years and don’t knit them up fast enough to justify more than one monthly yarn club and it’s Freckled Whimsy for sure. I buy Must Stash Yarns too. WYS and Opal are my top favorites for gift sock knitting as I know it will hold up to machine washing and drying.

    Thank you for walking us through this topic! I have some really cute Tiny Human Knits yarn that are just sitting in my stash, because I was too scared to start-- I found your explanation about how to match the two socks particularly helpful. You've confirmed what I had suspected-- that there will be waste if we try to make identical socks. I am also making a musselburgh with an Opal self-striping yarn, and I totally know what you mean about how magical and unique their patterning is!

    • @therapybycraft
      @therapybycraft  5 месяцев назад

      Oooh an Opal musselburghhhhhh *drool*. I can only imagine how beautiful that patterning is... and yes! making identical sets with a full 100g can be a bit tricky... BUT what I've done that helps is to re-wind the 100g ball into two 50-ish grams, starting with the same color in the color repeat. sometimes this results in a 48/52g balls +/- a few grams but that's been the easiest way for me to get identical socks!

    Great review. I always appreciate honest yarn reviews; how the yarn knit up, how it wears, etc. Artistic Yarns by Abi, Always Be Kind, Fab Funky Fibers, and Turtlepurl also have a unique way of doing self striping. So fun.

    I really want to try Nomadic and Freckled Whimsy! They're on my list :) I highly recommend trying out Tiny Human Knits (she also does 50/100g skeins WITH a coordinating mini, and she also offers up the seconds (imperfect dyed skeins) for a great discount!). I also love The Cozy Knitter for self striping as well. This is making me want to knit up my self striping as well!

      Ooooh that is really great to know about Tiny Human Knits! I have heard of her but didn't know those details. The Cozy Knitter.. is she the one who does those lovely Christmas advents?? Either way, thank you for your comment!

    I adore self striping yarn and have been blessed to knit with a lot of it. Nomadic twisty sock is hands down my fav. She has great saturated jewel tone color ways. I also love Woolens and Nosh’s tarhee base. Night Owl Fibers has some great Gilmore Girls and Friends inspired color ways. Havirland on Etsy also has tremendously saturated colors in vibrant, fun colors. Happy knitting!

    I am in love with sock knitting! Your episode and Summer Lee have recharged my sock obsession. My favorite hand dye yarn is from Needles at the Ready! I also love Woolens and Nosh self striping yarn and recently tried Biscotti bis-sock self stripe yarn.

      *Gasp* to be put in the same sentence as Summer Lee - I am giddy!! Haha! I'm so glad to add some fuel to your sock-knitting fire. I haven't tried Needles at the ready but thank you for the rec! I'll have to check them (and your other recs) out!

    Thanks for the review. I’ve only used Woolens and Nosh both fingering and DK and really like it. I also have a skein of Desert Vista Dyeworks to knit up someday. I found a shawl pattern for self striping that is cute and I have yarn for that too.

      @@therapybycraft I'm doing a jellyroll blanket like you are and the sections with self striping scraps are fantastic. I have been thinking of doing one with full skeins of self striping but still having strips to keep it even more interesting

    thanks for the review! i am keeping note of the indie dyers. I've knit with both regia and patons, and loved working with both. But all of my socks so far are gifts, so i have no idea how they wear :)

    I love socks!!! I am first and foremost a sock knitter. I've been knitting socks for over 10 years now and I have tried a lot of sock yarn! But my all time favorite and the one sock that is always on my needles is a pair of self-striping socks!! Love all the companies and independent dyers you have mentioned. My all-time favorite Self Striping Indy dyers are The Cozy Knitter, Must Stash, Nomadic Yarn. My favorite commercial self striping are WYS, Opal, Regia pairfect and Patons Kroy. Thanks for the awesome video!! Have a great day!

    I just recently learned about Kirby Wirby self striping yarn. Some beautiful colors I just need to build my yarn budget back up. I also love 50gram skeins. I make shorties so that works best for me.

    • @therapybycraft
      @therapybycraft  5 месяцев назад

      Ooh yes! Thank you for mentioning that. I remembered after recording that not everyone likes to make socks as long as I do. 50g is PERFECT for shorties! I have heard of Kirby Wirby but I haven't had a chance to use them yet - definitely putting them on my list to try!

    One of my favorites is Hinkston Handmade self-striping. She has matchy matchy to make identical pairs. Gusto wool Echoes sock yarn is also commercially dyed matching hanks. I have it in my stash but haven’t used it yet. Actually, the echoes may not be small stripes, I am seeing progressive stripes that don’t repeat. If that makes sense…

    • @therapybycraft

      Ooh those are both totally new to me. I'll have to check them out - thanks for the rec! And "progressive stripes that don't repeat..." how intriguing~

    Love this video. Polka Dot Creek has self striping that you can get separated into two 50 g segments for identical socks. I believe Woolens and Nosh does too at least at times like in their advent socks. And Gauge Dye Works does some neat things with self striping. They are worth a look.

    • @therapybycraft
      @therapybycraft  5 месяцев назад

      Ooooh I didn't know that about Polka Dot Creek! I have heard of those three dyers but I haven't had the pleasure of using their yarns yet. Thanks for vouching for them! I'll have to check them out. :)

    Love self striping yarn for socks. I really appreciate your feedback and agree with your views on Paint Box. I have used other Paint Box yarns which were fine but not their sock yarn. And I do like Patons Kroy, once I realized it did knit up more like sport weight. I did go up a needle size and use one smaller size sock pattern to achieve my usual size. I am really hoping @knit_picks will consider bringing back Felici, which was my favourite commercial, fingering weight, self striping yarn.

    • @therapybycraft
      @therapybycraft  5 месяцев назад +1

      ahh thank you for validating my experience with both Patons Kroy and the Paintbox Sock yarn! I am glad to hear that their other bases are fine to work with. Also, i am sooo sad that Felici was discontinued before I discovered the joy of self-striping yarnnss. Truly, my heart grieves for what it was never able to have.
