so delighted to see you in my inbox! Also a big tip for the musselbourgh hat - I always use a provisional cast on, knit the body, and then decrease on both sides. That way, I can skip the fiddly cast on, and I immediately know what the gauge of the body knit in the round is! No ripping back necessary. edit: lol of course you mentioned it! I'm always so impatient with commenting lmao
ahahah i love it!! i am 100% here for all the comments/suggestions. and i mean... you're not wrong. ;) starting in the middle of the body and decreasing on both sides is absolutely the way to go.
Glad to see you back. I missed your positivity and sense of humor. Please don’t feel pressure to have a highly edited video if it means we will get to see you more.
I also hate how the increases look. It looks so untidy so I won’t even continue. I tired so many times to adjust it and tighten the stitches as I knit and they still look ugly. Which is why I do what you do, a provisional cast on. The crown ,mirrors each other. On my first hat I also noticed where you start at the provisional cast on, it was more loose. So on my next beanie, I tighten it up around all the stitches before knitting the first row. I am so glad someone finally mentioning that the increases in the musselbury hat is ugly. I just knit the double brim hat like how some other tutorials on RUclips have been doing for years. 😂
Oh my god, it's been a long time since the last video. 🤗I don't knit socks and hats but I'm ready to watch this just because I adore your personality. So happy to see you again.🤩🧶
So happy you are back! I would recommend checking out Summer Lee podcast: it inspired me so much to knit all the socks! Finished her Mazie socks: favourite pair! 😊
As a baseball fan, I can confirm that you would say you are attending a Dodgers' game (with the S). You might like the Cracker Jack scarf, which uses different colors for wins/losses and home/away! It might make you more interested while you're hanging out there!
omgosh - THANK YOU for correcting me and guiding me towards the light. hahaha now I won't sound like such a fool. And what a fun project idea!! Thank you for sharing!
Welcome back to RUclips-land!!! For the Musselburgh, I also prefer knitting two decrease crowns instead of one increase and one decrease (but I won't do it that way if I'm using self-striping yarn because matching up the stripes when I go back to knit even just is more annoying than doing the cast on in that case for me!). For casting on my full number of sts, I use the Tin Can Knit crochet provisional cast on method that puts the sts right onto the needle. It really is a lot of trial and error (as you mentioned/experienced!) to figure out what gauge/fit/needle/yarn combo works best for each knitter. I also knit mine much longer than the pattern calls for. I typically knit mine 24"-26" from end to end - because I prefer a more snug-fitting hat which means when it's worn, the length shrinks up with the stretching out so for a deep brim, I need to make up for that "shrinkage" (and I'd rather err a hat slightly too long than slightly too short!). Love the sock kick (pun intended) you're on!!! CUTEST birthday dress ever!! Look forward to seeing what the next birthday dress will be!!!
oooh great points great points! yeah, I don't know why I didn't do the provisional cast on with the stitches right on the needle.. i know how to do it, but i just got lazy maybe?? haha! and YES 100%. I noticed as well that having a more "snug" fit means that the folded hem part does shrink a little from being stretched horizontally. Thanks for continuing on with me in this RUclips-ing journey Stephanie! I appreciate you so much!
I’m just catching up, so sorry that this comment is so much after you published. BUT! I just had to say I have *also* been completely obsessed with the Musselburgh hat. It started when a friend told me she would be losing hair during our Australian winter, and I decided that she absolutely needed a cosy beautiful hat in the softest wool I could find. Since then, I have knit them almost exclusively and have made 7 or 8. I think I will make more - they are so beautiful. Not quite everyone I know has one yet… 😂
ahahaha i love that! and YES - the Musselburgh hype is soooo understandable.. haha thanks for commenting nonetheless! never too late to leave a line or two. :)
The channels and videos I appreciate the most are probably the most chill and least edited so do what makes you happy! I do appreciate when videos include pictures of the patterns but if that's too much then don't do it!
You are 100% correct. I think those are the ones I like the most too. And yes! I, too, appreciate when videos include pictures... ahaha so I'm teetering back and forth about whether or not to add them. BUT - for now, I appreciate so much the permission I keep getting from folks to ease my way back into the podcasting rhythm. Thank you for being here!
So much gold in this single video! I now need to go watch the crochet cast on, the crochet provisional cast on, and the Judy’s magic cast on! And now the shadow wrap heel!!! I’m so excited as a very very beginner knitter to have so much to learn and practice!!!
ahahaha i love it!! i hope you have so much fun. it's probably one of my favorite things about this craft: that there's always so much to learn and get excited about. happy making!
Love your socks in particular, how fun to be sock camping! P.S. I vote for Dodger game not Dodgers game. I have concluded the same for my team--I use Brewers as noun and if adjective, Brewer. 😊
So great to see you back Eunice. I finally posted after 6 months- I love the editing but finding time to record and edit and post- totally get it. I too wonder how much that matters to viewers. I really enjoyed your Musselburgh journey. I knit one for my husband last year and had exactly the same experience. Measuring that one for gauge is a brilliant idea! I had the same thought about using a provisional cast on and recommend Laura Nelkin’s tutorial on RUclips that demonstrates how to do provisional cast on using stitch saver (the pony cord version of Barber Cord). I have used it on several knits and it’s brilliant! I loved your daughter’s birthday dress. What a lovely idea! Happy knitting 🧶 Cher
Hi Cher! Thanks for stopping by :D Ooh I am intrigued about the Barber Cord cast on idea... I will definitely have to look into that. So happy you're here!
Great video, as always! Your Musselburgh tips are so helpful - my first (and so far only) time knitting one, it totally came out way too big for exactly the reason you talked about. I really want to try again, especially with your JMCO idea, that's so clever!!
Yesss! You are absolutely not alone. I'm so glad that my experience can be validating for you and hopefully give you some encouragement that not all is lost. haha You got thissss
I’m glad you’re back! The birthday dress turned out adorable. Also…an annual podcast is still a podcast. I mean the SuperBowl is only once a year, so…..
yesssss that's such a win that you didn't frog it!! haha i hope you find success this time around - seriously, knowing the "body gauge," and thus my *magic numbers* changed everything.
Just found your podcast for the first time and LOVED everything about it. I had a similar experience with the musselburgh hat and you’ve inspired me to try it again! Then those socks……so fun and cute! Thanks for the enjoyable knitting time, watching your podcast!
aww yayyy. welcome :) thanks for being here and taking the time to say hello. Yes!! Something about that Musselburgh hat.... that pattern plays hard to get, but it's worth it in the end. i hope you find success with it the next time around!
Welcome back and I agree with others, you don't need to edit a lot at all, in fact I prefer less editing as it seems more natural. Love your socks and I'll be at Dodger Stadium next month (coming down from Southern Oregon to catch a game). I'm a toe up fleegle heel sock person but I think I'm in the minority with that preference, but I do shadow wrap heels when it's cuff down as well, love that heel.
ah thank you, susan! yes - i've been getting more and more feedback that heavy editing is not a necessity; y'all are seriously the best people. and ooohhh how exciting! i hope you enjoy the game and that it's a good one. with a lot of these left-over sock yarns that I have, I'm tempted to try toe up since I do think that's a better method for using up whatever leftover yarn one has... i'll let you know if I try the fleegle heel!
Great to have you back loving the new format Have you tried the Turkish cast on for your musselbrugh hat I found that it leaves a clean cast on and no picking up of stitches works like starting a toe up sock on circular needles
OH! The birthday dress 😍. So glad I stuck around! I don’t even make socks, but I loved hearing about your socks. I am new to knitting, and I have watched all your past episodes, and I am so glad that you are back!
welcome welcome! aww thanks for sticking around to see the birthday dress - and thank you for hanging out with me despite not being a sock knitter! i love, love connecting with new knitters - i feel so excited for you and the journey ahead with this amazing craft.
I’ve had a ball of Zauberball in my stash for years, and now I know what to do with it. Thank you. Your stripey Zauberball socks are gorgeous! I love your daughters birthday dress. Thank you for sharing. It. Can’t wait to see the next one. See you at summer camp!
Yayyy! I'm also so happy when inspiration strikes - for myself and for others, too! And thank YOU for sticking around to the end of the video to see the dress in its final form. I (and baby girl) are still so happy with it. Hopefully the next one will be a good one too.. haha!
riightt??? same same. i'm so glad for the inspiration that's available through social media! i don't think i would've ever thought to stripe them without seeing how others used their zauberball!
Absolutely loved this episode. So glad you're back. The birthday dress is beyond adorable, and I'd love to hear about your Shadow Wrap heel mods. That's been my go to heel method lately.
Aww thank you so much for your lovely comment! And yes! I am thinking about maybe doing a special video for the way I do my SWHs. It's such a great heel, isn't it? :)
Hey girl! We missed you! Omgoodness your daughter’s dress turned out absolutely gorgeous! I’ve been in sock knitting mode also. I definitely understand what you mean about the editing part, that’s one of the reasons why I stopped making videos 😩 Hope to see you soon.
yesssss you get it then. haha the knitting and talking about the knits is so much more fun than the technical parts.. thanks for sticking around and being here!! looks like we're on this sock-knitting train together.
Hahaha toootally fair. I definitely wouldn't put the Musselburgh in the "beginner" category. There are a lot more wonderful, beginner friendly beanie patterns out there for sure. Purl Soho has a lot of free beanie patterns for beginners - I hope you find one that brings you joy with both the process and the finished product!
I’m so happy to see you again! Your enthusiasm is wonderful and your projects are amazing! I always learn something from you and have one question about the provisional cast on for the musselburgh hat as I’m getting ready to make my first one. Do you cast on twice the amount of stitches since you will be knitting ‘up’ and then ‘down’? Thanks in advance!😊
Aww yay thank you!! And that is an excellent question. For the provisional cast on, I cast on the number of stitches I know I will need for the body of the hat (let's say, 100) - I don't double it because I will go back after the crown is done to pick up 100 stitches again to work the remainder of the hat. (I hope that makes sense...!) When doing the Judy's Magic Cast On, however, you will need to have 100 stitches on both sets of needles to knit both "up" and then "down" as you've said (so 200 live stitches total). Please let me know if any of that was unclear!
@@therapybycraft thank you for your detailed response! I think I’m on the right track of twice the stitches to plan for the remainder of the hat! I can’t wait to try it now!😄
Do you have a video or photos showing how you got your guage? Like, did you start it and then guage the knitted part? Or you used the one you made to guage it for the next one? How can you guage before you start it? Make a knit swatch? My family has HUGE head circumferences and that's why I'm trying to make this hat so it's soft and NOT tight. TIA!
Oh this is a great question! I don't have videos/photos for how I got gauge with my Musselburghs... The pattern itself explains how and when to measure your gauge, but i found it to be more helpful to use a garment or other project to see how many stitches per inch I got with a similar yarn and needles.
I haven't knitted a Musselburgh yet. I was thinking I'd do it in two pieces with provisional cast ons and Kitchener together. Was that what you did? I don't do Judy's magic cast on.
ahh that's different from what I did, but your idea works too! one of the versions I did was a provisional cast on + picking up stitches to work the other way; the other version was with Judy's magic cast on

Glad to see you back. I missed your positivity and sense of humor. Please don’t feel pressure to have a highly edited video if it means we will get to see you more.
Aww thank you for that.
So glad to find this video! I want to try the Musselburg... but that cast on has held me back, so I'm excited to hear your suggestions!

Right?! I definitely cannot take credit for it, but i dooo love it, oh so much. :)
Oh my god, it's been a long time since the last video. 🤗I don't knit socks and hats but I'm ready to watch this just because I adore your personality. So happy to see you again.🤩🧶

Welcome back!!! Your socks are all so gorgeous. I love the ideas you shared as well. Hope to see your next episode ❤

Yeahh! Thank you thank you. It feels good to be back with very minimal editing. Lol
oooh okay. you have officially inspired me to measure my failed tent musselburgh (which i fortunately didn't frog!) for gauge!
yesssss that's such a win that you didn't frog it!! haha i hope you find success this time around - seriously, knowing the "body gauge," and thus my *magic numbers* changed everything.
A lovely surprise to see a new episode from you! Really enjoy hearing about your makes :)
Glad you like them! :D Thanks for being here!
It's great to see you again. I really like your first Musselburgh Hat. 🧶 Your daughters dress is adorable! 😍

Welcome back! Loved all the Musselburgh info! I’ve made 2 now and both are way too big :/ May try again now with all these tips.
Thank you! and ooh yes - if you haven't ripped them out, check the gauge and maybe that'll help. Crossing my fingers for you!
Welcome back! Love that birthday dress. So adorable ❤
Thank you!! 😊
Wonderful to see you again. Thank you for a great podcast
thank you for being here!

Very new knitter…. Still not sure if I’m gonna make the musslebourgh. Seems like a looooot to figure out.
Hahaha toootally fair. I definitely wouldn't put the Musselburgh in the "beginner" category. There are a lot more wonderful, beginner friendly beanie patterns out there for sure.
