Thank you very much for this great lesson containing a huge amount of information. As the video is pretty fast paced I'll recommend others to watch the video in steps, pausing and repeating the different parts to get a chance to really listen and practice some of the chords and progression to really get the sound in your ears. There's plenty of gold in little snippet to justify taking your time on this!
I was so happy when i discover at Age of 14th those 4th chords they open a new world music dimension of corse listening to MC Coy T. Coltrane, M.Davis ,K.Jarret,J Zawinul,H Hancock, Chick C teach me a lot and now with Kent Hewitt i keep on the right path to learn well
Thank you Kent!! You are my inspiration and my teacher in this isolation times!! Thank you very much for all your awesome work!! I watch your videos several times and there's so much to learn from you!! Thank you from my heart!! And greetings from Argentina!!
Thanks a miliion Kent!! Been following you a few years and you never fail to amaze me. You're one of those few people who makes great things accessible for many. A generous, prolific educator with a massive treasure trove of knowledge and enthusiasm to spread around the world as some sort of creative antidote for the apocalypse of theday. A true legend you are sir, hat's off from Barcelona, Spain!!!
I would suspect someone like you would be from Barcelona. We were there last fall, and we were impressed. You and I, sir, we are truly compadres....please write to me at my email, so we can connect deeper.
Thank you, Michael,....if one is brave enough to face the whole world on camera, I believe we should at least be well dressed.. That is my belief, and I grateful to you for acknowledging it!.
This is the perfect video for me. I didn't realize, but this kind of modal style is exactly what my piano teacher Danny Dobak taught me when I was still taking lessons. Now I can can get an idea of how to expand what I already know about that style to do more with it. Thank you!
Hi! I am a litigation lawyer based out of Kolkata, India. I have a deep interest in Music (specially jazz) and painting. I have been following your lessons over the last few weeks. They have simplified the difficulties of my understanding in jazz. I have started improvising on the cosmic symmetry jazz scale and find it truly life changing. I am forever grateful to your lessons and look forward to learning more.😀
Thank you for your kind words. I also have a great appreciation of art and literature. You might like this video of mine: ruclips.net/video/6lXRj0hjHcM/видео.html Please subscribe!
Thanks, Kent. This video was exactly what I needed. Very inspiring. As a bass player I found the knowledge you imparted will give me a deeper insight when playing tunes like this in an ensemble setting. Cheers!
Thanks Kent. Great ideas to work on for Equinox. As a guitarist I'm going to try recording the chords in quartal harmony and some inversions, then play some lines on top. This video has given the best approach to playing this tune that I've seen... as well as approaching quartal harmony in general. Thanks again so much. You're the real deal. No b.s. 🙏🕊🌿
These 4th chords are very cool. Another great lesson. We had these John Coltrane records playing in my local bar (Bermuda Triangle in Poole - UK) on the last day before the lockdown. (Still the best jazz piano lessons on the internet in my humble opinion).
Outstanding as Usual ! thanks so much Kent. This tune I have not played for over 20 years, it gives me the opportunity to get back to it and have so much enjoyment.
Actually I'm taking advantage of the extra time at home to write an appendix to my book, with drills and exercises. I hope it will be one of my best offerings. Unfortunately it takes away from the time I enjoy making videos. Thanks!
Thank you Kent, great as always. Question's: I see that you use the #9 voicing on the (altered #4) twice, on the 3rd & flat 6th of this Cmin scale (left hand). Brings a nice edge. Also, on other posts such as "Wave" you use #9 voicings under the melody a minor 3rd below the melody notes and chase them up the diminished chord iteration. Is there a hard and fast rule you think of, when to choose a quartal voicing or #9 voicing (left hand)...... in certain modes, progressions, keys or song situations ? Curious. Thanks. Love this, its huge in scope.
Absolutely. I did more of that in other videos on modal playing. Check out my playlist on modal playing. I did a little bit of shifting pentatonic figures on this one at around 3:09. KH
You really didn't explain this to good,im still not sure exactly what modal jazz is,i thought i learned once that it suspends tonality, but yet here you are harmonizing all over the place. I studied "So What" and noticed how there's really no cadences, it all revolves around D-7 (Dorian) and opens up an improv in this mode, i noticed that MD is using D- and Eb- and thats it
@@KentHewittpiano88 why would I do that, when I've just stated how I'm not impressed with the last one I tryd to watch, sorry man,but it seems ur not to good at teaching, so I'll pass on that one,I had to watch another video by someone else to get a real explanation of modal jazz. Maybe you can improve ur production from listening to feedback from the general public, js 🤔
Thank you KENT for choosing those beautiful things
My pleasure!
Great men, great music, great lesson. Thank you Kent! Now 2024

Thanks Kent. Lots to consider.

excellent video, i'm an organ player, and know this song played by Rhoda Scott sometime ago, and your approach is very useful to me. Thanks.
Thanks for telling ne...I' loved her playing as well as many of the organ greats. I got to hear Jimmy Smith at Newport.
@@KentHewittpiano88 yes, Jimmy was non plus ultra, thanks for your kind reply and again your excellent video, very helpful.
Great explanation on a very complex subject. Thanks and stay healthy

Same here....I generally don't play this song, I think of it more of a saxophone song...but it was fun doing this. Thanks!
Kent Hewitt I started to record a shakuhatchi version ! Suits the instrument so well!
GREAT VIDEO MAN
Thank you!
Thanx Kent. Always loved this tune. Great effort.
Much appreciation!.
This is great stuff! I just wish you had that app that shows the notes being played because its not always easy to see the fingering.
I have that on my newer videos. Thanks!

One of the best lessons for me on modal jazz. I didn't see this in your free downloads. Is that a possibility in the future? Thanks.
Write to me, for scores you can't find. Blessings!

Another fine one "Dr" Altered Dominant Thank you!
He's gone into "hibernation" in Newark. Thanks for checking in!
so the classic modal sound is from quartal chords!
