Love your videos Kent. I'm a college student that was studying jazz piano but finished my lesson sequence. I've been watching your channel for years but especially now it has served as one of my greatest educational tools since I'm no longer in lessons (or even on campus). i heard and read an interview of Alice Coltrane, where she noted that the mixolydian mode is a sort of cheat sheet for playing modal. recently, i was watching that priceless Impressions video with the extended Garrison solo, whereby i heard and read Garrison approaching the song in vibes of G Mixolydian. whereas i had before heard and read Tyner approaching it from a Dm vibe. and so it's continuous and hypnotic on many levels and can go for several hours in a person's mind. R. Hyman describes it that way in his Century of Jazz lectures. the mixolydian is perhaps the hidden retained mysticism in Western Civilization, having an Essene ancient quality.
I don't know it from the esoteric side, but the Domino Dorian scale is much the same as G mixolydian scale, ....if that helps.

21:00 Absolutely agree. The personality, the real emotions are what listeners look for. That is true - to forget to play nice music. Just be yourself and tell your story - not a story of Bill Evans, Herbie or Tatum with voice of Miles and vocabulary of Charlie Parker, but your story, which can be unperfect, strange, primitive as bad love. Hi Kent love your lessons. I'm an old dude trying to learn Jazz guitar. I still find your lessons very helpful. I saw all these Jazz artist back in the 60's at the Jazz Workshop, Purple Onion, and other places in the San Francisco Bay Area. Joe Williams was ask why only about 7% of the U.S. public likes Jazz? He answered by saying that "Jazz is a very sufisticated art form and that it just shows that everyone is not sufisticated." I think thats a great answer LOL.
That's pretty cool. I was in San Fran in '69...saw Bill Evans and George Duke at the Jazz Workshop. John Handy was in the audience. Thanks for the comment!

How you mixed quartal chords in the left hand with melody and pentatonic scales in the right hand , then chromaticism (in the opening, playing through the tune)--oh my, what beauty! Now I must reduce the speed in the youtube setting and spend some time seeing exactly what you did here! Beautiful playing and commentary! And very helpful. Thank you!

AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a jazz vocalist ... this is so helpful for scatting to modal tunes .... BIG THANKS !!! So fundamental to understanding the break throughs in the 50s and 60s .... Always loved this kind of Jazz music (Modal) but did not know what it was called, till a few years ago. Gravitated towards 'Kind Of Blue' Album forever ... but only now am I understanding how much the modal and pentatonic aspect is a part of this kind of music, and this Album. Love your advice about 'record yourself playing' !!!! I do this with my vocal technique. Very helpful. ALSO -- understand the 'trying tooooo hard' aspect of ART. Very helpful !!! "You Need Both" too quote you. (Technique and SOUL) --- The ZEN of JAZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ !!!!!!!!!

I once heard someone describe great software as being the kind that “gets out of the way of the user.” I think nothing could be more correct and if you think of any software you use that you like, it’s probably true that the best stuff becomes intuitive and you focus on what you are trying to do, not how to turn the knobs. But...to reach that point, soo much intellectual thought and process was put in place by the designers.
I think to your point of intellect and “soul”, once the intellectual portion is understood and ingrained, it gets out of the way entirely and frees us to bring out the advanced artistry. It’s the difference between being told to play d-f-g-a-c to sound good, or taking time to learn and absorb what the minor pentatonic means, and recalling it at will in any key. Once you absorb that intellectual concept it becomes intuitive and “goes away” hidden in, reinterpreted and modified in artistic expression. But we can’t modify it without first absorbing it, and therein lies the work.
(Sigh)...some of us are still working hard to make those skills “go away” to get to the inner artist, but with your patience, guidance and insight...it’s coming right along.

Hi Kent. What dramatic energy in that piece! Very McCoy Tyner I felt. I think you are trying to tell us to study, work hard, but above all, to Let Go and feel the sound in your spirit. A lesson that was taken away from many of us when we were kids in traditional piano lessons ( nuns with rulers 😪) But it’s not too late! Thank you for all your help and guidance. You are the best! Wow Kent! As we say in England- "You really threw the kitchen sink at this performance" that's amazing!!! But, if you get into the tutorial it's not quite as difficult to replicate this as it first seems. That's why it's a good lesson. (in my humble opinion)

Thanks for the comment. You want a solo version w/o the backing track?. It's more fun and you can do more w/ the backing track. Watch my earlier videos on improvisation. Thx Kent for your reply. Yes it is fun with a backing track and I made many concert with a bass backing track and a drummer, but in the end a backing track is like a dumb musician and you lose spontaneity. In that matter I prefer a solo version.
Hey Ken, I’m having problems really mastering the changes to tunes! ....... the forget who said it but, they said if you can play the chords on the piano, then you don’t know them!

Hey Kent, love your videos. I couldn't think of any particular way to get ahold of you, so I just picked this video to comment on. If you're interested, I have a particular video request for you: I'm looking for someone to help me find the name of a particular jazz song that I came across in the past but forgot the name of. I've searched everywhere for it but haven't found it yet. If I posted a video of me giving a take on the melody on piano, could you try to recognize it, and if you do recognize/know the song, do a cover of it? It's such a beautiful song and would like to put the name in my memory bank upstairs.
Sure, you can post a private video on RUclips or you can send videos by MyTransfer. I did that recently and it was very easy and worked great. I know how you feel, because there are songs I've heard that I can't remember or find the title to .

Any comments about what you need from the bass player on a tune like impressions?
If you listen to the recording the bass [player is mainly walking in 4 on the minor modal scales (D dorian, Eb dorian).
