What a gift you have! And what a gift you give!!! Thank you!
Wow, so generous of you. You are so welcome!
You're my hero!!!! Thank you so much. The only benefit of COVID is the new found time I have to polishing skills and improving my piano fundamentals. Thank you for sharing your amazing gifts. They are so appreciated.
Wonderful comment...esp. because we are locked down. I hope you know what it's like for us performing musicians, with no one to play with and no audience to listen, after so many years. My RUclips connection, keeps me going. Bless you!
Fantastic. This is another keeper. This fills that gap for me between basic jazz principles and advanced improvisation and shows the techniques and flair perfectly. Thanks Ken!
Great perceptive comment, I might add. Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant! Started playing in A mi, and instantly felt 'maybe I could finally start to get me head around jazz with this for the first real time'. Thanks a lot!
Such as great comment....I'm so glad you have reinforced the value of this video, which, as always I spend hours on, and many days on creating.
You have created a tune id purchase without a hesitation. It's beautiful. You are my biggest inspiration, Great job Prof Kent.
Wow, thank you!
@@KentHewittpiano88 thank YOU, sir!
Great job Prof. Hewitt. This is a sharpener that works for everyone.
Very cool...that's what I strive for....thanks!
I think your comic side is on point too.. I think you should do abit more of that comedy. I love it and am sure alot of people would do too. You sir are a funny guy 🤓
Hey kole...I love your comment...beccause I want to do that...but I need some advice...which I think you can help me with.
What a shot....right on target. This is what creates good pianists...” just practice a bit and move on to the next keys”. Another very thoughtful video...high quality from the worlds’ top jazz piano teacher..KH (and his AE assisant). Thanks!!
And sending love to my faithful follower, Baldo, who always has the most astute perceptions. May you be graced with many insights and gifts from the amazing world of music.
Thank you, JazzBrother Kent. 🌹🌹🌹
Yes, groovy chick...and as the Duke said: "love you madly"!
Hi Dr. Kent thank you so very much for the Sheet music and the backing track that'll help me out a lot !! thank you again Dr. Kent best of wishes always !! Teddy Korbos !!
You're very welcome!
Another beautifully conceived video tutorial that is rich with practical insights and a road map into the melodic and harmonic devices of the minor keys. I value your work and learn so much with each of your videos, Kent. I’m happy to hear you have been vaccinated. Stay healthy, and keep swinging, Daddio. You are the hippest cat on RUclips.
Hello sir, ...if I'm the hippest cat, then you are the 2nd hippest cat. I mean that...and please write to me...so we can connect. Your support keeps me going.
I begin to believe i am able to improvise and learn through this a lot ! Big thank's dear Kent !!!
You are very welcome!
Great tips and thank you for making these exercises available and accessible. X
Glad you like them!
Very informative. Thanks for this presentation
Glad it was helpful!
That is the most exiting exercise I have ever heard! It inspires you to practice all the important stuff that sometimes is tedious & boring. This takes a creative teacher like yourself to make an exercise so appealing & knowledgeable at the same time..sounded great with the backing track..very original idea!!!😘🥰
Thanks so much, Phyllis...for "nailing" it again w/ the most insightful comment.
When are you finishing your novel?..... (or your memoirs?) I'm glad you dug it...I'm always looking for new ideas for videos. (stayin' alive!)
@@KentHewittpiano88 haha..never thought of myself as a writer!!
Thanks Kent. Another great lesson.
Glad you enjoyed it
Super lesson! Thank you Kent!
Very welcome
Looking good Kent ! Many thanks for sharing this
Thanks for watching!
Kent, you are my favorite Piano Teacher, You Rock ! :) Thank you from Tristan, the French in Tokyo, Beginner player
Great!! Please write to me, and I'll send you some tips.
K.H., I wondered why I felt a certain level of comfort hearing the exercise explained and played. Minor keys on the sharp side is where I live. For me, it is definitely the flat side that needs work- my creativity noticeably diminishes at around Ab. (side-note) It is also hard for me to think of Db as C#.. Looking forward to working with the exercise....ty....
Chet, are you a guitarist? Most pianists prefer the flat keys. Either way, I'm glad you are benefiting from the exercise and if you need a link to the backing track, please write to me.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Sorry, the thumbnail is a bit small, I play sax. I've been allow time to tighten up, and have, to a large degree, learning chord structure, extensions, and alterations with corresponding scales. I have to keep putting in the work, and then try to be creative with it. I'll consider the track, if I can get off the drum kit I just upgraded...
Great video lesson!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Much appreciated
Great theme for a lesson! I like to end minor key tunes on the "Spy Thriller Movie" chord, In Dm would be: Left hand D F A D E , Right hand A C# E F Best voicing I can find.
That's a great one...thanks so much, Robin!
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thank you for your endorsement! Can you find the chords to "Gil Melle" - "Music for Columbo" ? I think in E minor, I've got the melody but am struggling to get the right chords. I mean the key ones I can't find that unlock the whole tune when you do find them.
Kent you are amazing.
I'm sure I'd say the same to you, if I knew you. Please write to me your story.
Thanks for another inspirational tutorial. These exercises cycling through the keys are a tremendous way to get to know the key signatures and make music! BTW, regards to the ADman.
Thanks very much for your comment! ADEM thanks you too!
I love you, you cool cat. I hurt my arms practicing and i couldnt touch my piano for 3 weeks now. Im now just going through scales in my mind. I would really appreciate a video about things to do away from the piano. I also know this aint no wishing contest. Keep rocking it and keep being your awesome self. :)
Hey, I love your comment, bro. You and I are compadres...please write to me...I'd love to hear your story. Swing loose!
That is more great stuff, Kent. Thanks for the tutorial and for sharing the notation and backing tracks.
Very welcome!
Thank you Kent great job
Thanks for watching
from 4:24, your example sounds like a whole piece of song, it's beautiful!
So cool, man...thanks a million!
great exercise, am looking forward to trying this out thank you
Wonderful!
Love those quotes✌️
Thanks very much for your comment!
Thank you, Kent for the lot of ideas you give to us.
You are very welcome
Down under the circle is traversed "anti-clockwise" by fourths .
Traversing the circle in fourths while introducing the Dom7 sonically between chord transitions leads nicely to the next fourth throughout the series C->C7->F->F7->Bb->Bb7 ..etc.
Thanks for the great lesson. That Mr. Alton Dominic always seems to add a color in between the black and whites.
Cool, man. You are the coolest of cats, and I'm so glad to always hear from you!
@@KentHewittpiano88 You are a very kind soul.
Hi Kent. That is an amazing excercise. It’s one to keep the student interested. We need lots of these. Thank you. I’m heading for your website for the backing track. Great lesson!😎
Wonderful. Thanks... your words make it all worthwhile for me. You'll find the backing track on my channel page, or you can just use the search box in RUclips to find it.
Good thank you Kent it helps me a Lot for Play in churches but I'm not too good to sheet music
You are very welcome! Glad you told me!
This is excellent! I'll be working on this for the next few weeks. Thank you!
Thanks for telling me...that this info is valuable.
another amazing video, thank you for everything you do Kent, warm hug from mexico
You are very welcome
Thanks, Kent. Can’t wait to try your minor keys exercise, although I expect it will feel familiar! For the last month I’ve set a challenge for myself: to play Autumn Leaves and improvise on it, in all keys. As you mentioned, the more difficult keys are F#m, C#m, G#m. Thanks for the backing track and the work you put in, scoring this. Would you consider putting up a video on the part played by the diminished 7 chord in moving from the II min7b5 to the V dom7b9? It’s interesting.
Good request...and thanks for acknowledging the value of the exercise...cause I worked a lot on this one.
Thank you so much, Kent
You are very welcome
Thanks for this, thanks for sharing your wisdom/knowledge,much appreciated, btw,I’m working on your lesson of Giant Steps, unfortunately I’m only
at the baby steps stage, will continue working on this till I get it down, appreciate everything you do,God Bless!
I'm so glad you told me...please writ my email, and I'll send you links to videos that will help you.
I see the value of this as an.exercise, but its a very cool composition.Thank you!
Glad you like it!
Excellent refreshment. Will work on this at the evening. Thank you ever so much and what a luck that the K.H. wasn't shot :) Groove along and take care of yourself. Cheers
Keep swinging, my friend!
@@KentHewittpiano88 you too :)
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
A little hard to understand for straight up beginners, but just learn
the A minor chord progression in the left hand and work on your A minor
scale with the right. One hand at a time, and then both together, when you're ready. When you've got A minor down, move on to D minor and the rest of the circle of 4ths.
That's exactly right. Also you might want to start with my Beginner Jazz Series and Beginner Improvisation. Look for these categories in playlists:

Thanks Kent! Sounds like a great exercise. Can`t wait to try it. But even in this relative minor scale you need to use the g# key to get back to the Am chord?
Right...There's only so much I can do in a video...before I lose people's interest...but I try my best.
Is there a reason why you call it C sharp minor instead of D flat minor? Just a stupid question. Great video, very helpfull.
I'd have to watch the video again. But usually it depends on whether it's a sharp key or flat key or chord. In the key of B it would be C#. In the key of of Ab it would be a Db.
Hi Kent!
I'm from Brazil. You can insert one legend in portuguese?
You are great!
Please write to me and I'll give you some tips.
@@KentHewittpiano88 ok Kent!...thank you so much!
@@KentHewittpiano88 You can send me your Email? Sorry Kent!..my English are from google tradutor.
I have to make some kind of comment ... A quote I'd not want to forget ... by a terravadan monk "Be a person with two eyes, what ever you think ask if the opposite is true."
Are we are talking about the dichotomy of life...in other words... that for everything, there is the opposite...such as night / day....; good / evil....man / women.... happiness / sadness....and the like?
@@KentHewittpiano88 Well yes and to get a broader perspective not to be taken over too much by my views and ideas and have a balance.. hopefully will lessen suffering in the mind added to whats already there.
Haha 😂 hes back! Whoop ego! Lol 😂
I dig you , man, you are a cool cat!!
Hi Kent. I cannot find the sheet music for this on your site.
Hi Dan,
please write to my email, and I'll try to locate the score for you!
yeah it's definitely not there under minor exercises
Hi Kent - do you have the track for this?
Write to me on my website and I'll try to find it.
The upward melody reminds me of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Heh...
I'm sure that's a cool thing! Thanks!
KH HOW DO I GET A COPY? In notation that is
Write to my email...thanks!
☆🎹☆ Lovely "exercise", KH! (IMHO, it MIGHT be too musical to be called an "exercise" - could you handle calling it an "etude"??) ☆🎹☆
That's cool, Marilyn. It takes on the persona of a lyrical exercise...I hope.
