The essence of what you teach transcends the wonderful instrument that is the piano to jazz musicianship on any polyphonic instrument. Hi Kent
    I've been following your videos for quite a few weeks now. Wow - what a body of work it is! Kent, you achieve something most teachers cannot - presenting the information in bite-size chunks that both the newbie and the more experienced player can benefit from. Not many teachers manage that!.
    Your unique personality and consummate skills are an inspiration to us aspiring musicians eager to learn from a master!
    It's been said many times already, but 'thank you' for all that you're doing to pass along a lifetime of musical knowledge to those of us thirsting to acquire just a morsel of it.
    And the icing on the cake is, it's fun learning from you!

    Comping, also help with playing funk piano and many other genres. I am now getting deeper into comping. I use to wonder why my playing sounded different to a jazz piano player until I started getting into to it. Lot's of work to perfect the skills before my hands can be in harmony with the brain in some of the comping rhythms. There's no giving up on doing so. I went there once, but didn't hear Lee Morgan. He was an extraordinary talent....he's right up there with Clifford and Freddie. That is creepy...who would have known? So many of the greats died too young...which is a statement about the difficulties of living the life of a jazz musician. Blessings... keep in touch and swing loose!

    Masterful lesson. Lots of good information in this video. I am interested in a video about comping at fast tempos. Bill Evans was known for beautiful, lyrical chord voicings but didn’t typically play fast tempos except in his early recordings. How do you comp when the tune is whizzing by and you don’t have a lot of time to move your hands?

    Great stuff, thank you! Also, about the comping rhythm possibilities, the rhythm can be as well before the beat. I'm thinking about Red Garland rhythm (and2-and4). and1-and3 is great, but being behind the beat does not help the swing and the forward motion that much.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 лет назад +1

      You make a great point, and I should have addressed that. I think Red got that concept from Ahmad Jamal. Ahmad is one of my heroes, so I'm remised in not bringing that out in this video. I'll just have to do another one about comping ...and talk about that, because you are absolutely right, it swings harder with the comp ahead of the beat. Swing loose, bro!

    Great lesson! I will be able to use these techniques while improving solo piano, since I don’t have opportunity to play with a band. As you were playing through the samples with the backing track, in my mind I kept hearing swinging improvisational solos! Made me want to sit down and jam with you. :)
    Here’s a tip for those like me who cannot reach a 10th interval with one hand: use both hands! What I mean is, play the upper note of the left hand 10th with the thumb of the right hand. That should work with the voicing you described, as it will only create an octave stretch in the right hand. I used tricks like this all the time. I’m only able to play 10ths when both notes are on the white keys, and then just barely.
    I’ve promised to drop you a note with my story. I haven’t forgotten. It’s been a busy couple weeks. I will eventually get it sent off.

      Ones hands are so big, I have to relearn voicings, depending on the keyboard I am using, It would take me months to get used to an 88 key piano again. Electronic keyboards are scaled differently, one has to dig around and fuck with the scaling you like. Propper machines will let you shift octaves easily, split the keyboard so the higher registers are left to right or multiple splits. Set them whatever way you choose, make it easy, I say. I cant possible play 10ths , not on a piano,
      I do the same thing if I am playing on an actual real piano. A yamaha ps 45 or 115 is adequate for a cheap ass piano machine, really voicings in the long run are dependant on the keyboard you have at hand,\
      I scared myself playing a massive grand piano. Wonderful, but I would need to workout in a gym for a few months to get a handle on the voicings Kent uses or discover what the fuck I could get out of it,
      I have heard many early recordings of Ella with piano, and the comping is deliberately simple, and sparse. I figure its not the musician, but the limitations of the machine and the recording technology

    Great video as always Kent! I have a question, and I would very much appreciate it if you could spare the time to answer, perhaps make a video addressing it or point me to the direction where I find the answer. My question is: how do you practice to develop familiarity and comfort with chords? What has always mystified me is your ability to just switch voicings on the fly, and play these voicings in ways that really make the voice leading shine. For me, even though I might know what the construction of a certain chord is, I can only play voicings that I determined beforehand. But you can move up and down the register with absolute ease. Is it just a matter of practicing all different voicings you can think of? Is there a way that you would recommend for practicing this? I would love so much to hear from you!

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 лет назад +6

      Wow, that's a challenging question. As much as I know about chords, voicings, and jazz piano in general, in my past at some point, after practicing enough, it became natural for me, by knowing the keyboard well enough, that I could move around with the voicings in all registers, without any thinking about it. It's like...can you describe how you learned to ride a bike? All of a sudden after enough practice and tries, you could do it. I think, like osmosis....(gradual or unconscious assimilation of ideas).... you will be able to do it as well as I can...it just happens after enough quality practice. Of course it's easier if you have a good private teacher to help you. (not me). I'm going to think about your question, and sleep on it, and come up with a tutorial that addresses that specifically, in a better way. (Please...if this is a good answer,r please click on the thumbs up).

    For the spread voicings, when should I use root + 3 and root + 7 instead of using 3 + 7 or 3 + 6? I’m playing with a bass player, but I find that many of the written scores have me play bass notes. Is there a reason for this?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 лет назад

      @Spanish Moustache- Thanks for sharing your knowledge. When playing with a bass player , generally don't play the root, but instead play a color tone or upper extension, particularly a 9th. It expands the harmonic nature of the sound. It's important to understand rootless voicings...and I have a category on that in my Playlists. As a solo pianist, you most often should play the root. But this is not saying that you can never play the root with a bass player...maybe just less.

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 лет назад

      The general rule is you don't need to play the root because the bass player is playing it. So why not use that advantage to add another color tone to the chord? This does not mean that you can't ever play the root in those situations, I often play the root.

    Maybe this question was already asked, but it's ok to have the roots in your comping even though the bass is (I'm guessing) playing a lot of the roots already?

    • @KentHewittpiano88
      @KentHewittpiano88  5 лет назад

      If you're playing roots, don't make them in the low register or get busy in that area, because it could cloud up what the bass player is doing. That rule is qualified, in that you CAN play roots, but not all the time. Piano trios (melody played by pianist) sound great when your left hand is playing rootless chords in the middle register. (I have a newly posted video on comping...check it out).
