The South Downs Way is a 100 mile trail in the south of England that connects the cities of Winchester and Eastbourne via rolling hills and downland. It features various technical singletrack, steep climbs and descents as well as lots of undulating fire roads. To tackle this beast of a ride he needed some serious kit.

What kit do you always have for longer journeys?
GMBN Tech Water... Lots of Water
helmet :)
Water ;)
Same as neils + cable ties
Toilet paper and sanitizer!
The biggest off road ride I've ever done was the London to Brighton off road. 75 miles in just under 8 hours on my Canyon Strive CF 9.0 Team. I nearly died.
I would love to see a video with Blake and neil going bike packing for a few days! Tell Blake to get involved
There's one that's going up soon!
Did my SDW on a 120mm Trek Fuel Ex with 1x10 and my normal Osprey backpack and was fine on all the hills! The only dicey part was the run down the grassy hill towards QECP as there was still dew on the ground and I didn't dare touch the brakes until I was on the flat before the gate. I got up to 43mph and arrived at the gate with both feet out tripod style, both wheels locked up and giggling like a little schoogirl! The walker the other side of the gate just looked at me and asked if I was having fun.
The ride is so much more about the mental side rather than the physical equipment, keep going steady and you'll get a lot further than you think. I really need to do it again as I now know what to expect and reckon I can easily get my time down from 13.5 hrs to 12. More of this type of riding please!
An e-bike for the camera crew probably sounds like the fairest use for one.
Me and my mate have done the SDW 3 years running. it's such an awesome ride, a real testing day on the bike and you really can't beat that sense of achievement doing a hundred mtb miles. Great video.
Neil can we just take a moment to appreciate you bringing up the importance of good shorts and chamois cream, never spoken about and I feel its often hard to get the right information about despite how important it is on longer rides. I have a couple of very long MTB races coming up and really want to make sure I look after myself on these, what would you regard as good quality shorts or bibshorts and what to keep an eye on when buying them with marathon rides in mind?
Good point, could do with some information myself 🙄
Thanks Neil, great video and well done on the epic ride!
I managed around 76 miles of the SDW but I started Eastbourne and rode west towards Winchester ( psychologically heading home) had to stop at QECP due to bottom bracket failure.
Still, managed to raise £1200 for Wessex Heartbeat.
I will be going back and trying again but on a different bike.
Loved it and the scenery was amazing.
Planning on doing it in the next couple of months east bound, any advice?
Thank for this Neil and crew. Coming over from NZ to ride Ratrace the Crossing, so this was right up my alley.
That bike is a beast! Love to see a video about kitting out your bike/self for a big XC day on different budgets.
Nakamura Cliffrunner 20+ years old. Still ride it up to this day. 26er, grip shifters, 3x7, v brakes... Longest ride so far was 54 km in one dsy. But will change it for a trail or enduro bike. The idea of longer multi day ride is really great Idea NeiL! And DO tke Blake with you! It would be epic! Maybe do a longer, maybe 20 or 30 minute video of the trip. Have you tried a trail or enduro bike for such a trip? I think it would be interesting experience.
I've been doing these kind of rides for 20years on and off, I think there great for metal well being and enjoyment .
I've been using a 2013 Giant xtc 29er and love it. Funny thing it's set up very similar to how you set you bike up!
Great video!
Awesome!
Agreed! I've never really thought about it before but I have used them a few times when life gets a bit busy to just take a break and reset.
yes, yes, more long ride videos. please.
Biggest ride was 245kms off road in one day, which I did 3 years in a row, all around 12-13 hours. Have also done 2 100 Milers, with last one being done almost an hour faster than the previous one, in over 8 hours. I find I enjoy the challenge of the long distance events.
245km Race was the TransKaroo and the 100 Miler is the Cederberg100Miler.
Hi Neil.
Really enjoyed your ' longest day challenge.' Rode S Downs from Eastbourne to Chichester & back in 1992. (Kona explosive) Met one person on a mountain bike. I'm sure a few more bikes now;)
I've done the SDW100. Camelbak loaded with snacks and spares. My wife was support crew, meeting me every 20 to 25 miles for a pitstop and real food. I'll do it again with you guys at GMBN if you want a group ride. Failing that, join me for a multi day event in South Africa next year, Joberg2c.
Planning to do the CX Sportive South Downs cyclocross ride next year so that’s been a big help with knowing what to expect. Then hoping to make it a two day epic and ride back to Bournemouth via the quiet back roads and seaside promenades. Watch it be typically British and chuck it down with rain 😉
Thanks for sharing the background to such a great ride. It looked great.
best mtb video I’ve watched ever
I’d recommend the C2C Whitehaven to Tyneside. 140 miles give or take. Great for a solo day ride mixing trails and some road.
I have done a couple of 100 mile rides in one day, however these were what we here in the U.S. call century rides. There are stops for food and water and it is on road bikes. Some day I hope to do a nice one day ride on my mountain bike.
so cool my boy !!!!!!
That's one hell of a bike Neil!
Thanks Tomi Saaranen!
No problem and call me Tomi!
I tried SDW from Winchester but I finished at Queen Elizabeth Country Park (It was just about enough for me at that time and I snapped my chain as well). I did that on my enduro bike 1x10 setup and it wasn't bad ,well i had to push bike on one hill just before arriving to QECP...Tyre choice and suspension setup is key if you going on full sus i think....anyway great job Neil I'm sure I will try to do a bit more next time....
Midsummer sunrise, great time to be out on a MTB.
It's the best!
Thanks Neil
No worries!
Come on Simon would love it.
Simon did it last year, he gave me some advice
Trans Cambrian in Wales should be your next big ride. I did it over 3 days on a 160mm travel bike with 1x10 but it'd be better on a full sus xc with 2x. Could be done in 2 days or 1 if you're crazy.
get gcn guys on gravel bikes if you do a longer ride, would be another comparison between xc and gravel bikes, loved that race
if you are considering full sus then try treks isospeed procalibers first - even on something like cobbles or rough gravel/breakstone(dunno if its the correct translation) its buttery smooth.
Could you use one for bike packing?
I'm looking at getting a 29er hardtail for longer rides and for bike packing.
Had my heart set on the Nukeproof Scout but that's 1x and I think 2x is what I need.
Just seen a 2018 Trek with 2x reduced on sale.
This year I did 100 km of single track (4.5 loops of my local trails) on my hardtail (2006 Norco Bigfoot). It was insane.
louiscormier12 that's not 100 miles dude lol
11:47 Neil says "I'd love to hear about your longest rides" and that's what I did. Never said it was 100 miles.
Great day out! I personally would just turn the back tire the right way round. :P
Last week I've done a 100km ride on a plus hardtail with 1x and I was amazingly easy :D Had a nice pizza halfway through so the morale would stay high
If you had done this totally unsupported, what was your plan for getting back home?? 🤔 Fabulous video as always Neil. 👍 👍
You can get a train back to Winchester I believe. Cheers!
39 mph on that bike! That matches my top speed on my road bike. Really fast.
Great vid! Looks like you had the weather for it too. I wouldn't fancy riding on those chalky hills in the wet. I'm surprised you didn't/don't use any hydration tabs/additives? How about you and Blake do the Coast-to-Coast (St Bee's to Robin Hoods Bay) next year?
Thanks, I was going to use tabs in the water but forgot them!
Great video very interesting
nutrition and hydration
Hello Neil love the longest day videos, I've done a 60 mile MTB ride on a Trek Procaliber here in north wales, love to do the south downs way, just wondering which websites you got the info for water taps and route from, did you post your day on strava.
Cliff bars are the way forward
Hey Neil, great video, btw, I think you might have the grips on backward. Peace
Water refill points? You lot are posh down south. They just don't exist up north, even on the C2C Whitehaven to Sunderland route (correction: they do, they're called streams, pubs & shops).
In Sloveania you just stop at any creek and just refill. :D
Here in South Africa we have a Race called the Freedom Challenge (www.freedomchallenge.org.za). Its a 2500km unsupported single stage Race. You should come out and do it if you are keen on really big days out. If you aren't up for the full version, then there are a number of shorter variants of only 500km each. No GPS allowed, so navigate with a compass. Hope to see GMBN come out and give it a go.
That's a huge marathon!
In 35 years of cycling I don’t ever recall saying, or thinking, “d’ya know what? I wish I had fewer gears!” 2x all the way.
stuart marsh front derailleurs work great when you're riding through fields and not over rocks and roots and stuff. They both have their place, and I'm not going to come banging on your door anytime soon saying that you need to go one-by.
you know what, I went 1x and I've never ever wanted more gears. I'd not even consider a 2x or let alone a 3x, its 1x all the way.
1x, the new vegan.
2x has it's place I run it on my marathon xc bike it's great for when you have tried legs at the end of a big day or for cranking it up on liaison sections or road links, I run 1x on my trail bike.
each to their own. If I raced XC perhaps the extra gears would matter, but I dont so for me the simplicity, removal of something to go wrong, and so on of a 1x is brilliant, I do ride a lot of XC casually and I've never missed the exta gears, I have pretty much the same range, and yes some of the steps between the top and bottom gears is abrupt, but its nothign you dont get used to pretty quickly.
#askgmbntech what the best tire for xc? I often ride on asphalt but i also want to ride offroad.
Neil love the video. Would you ever do this on a full carbon enduro bike
100 miles on an enduro bike? Shoot me now! LOL
Windband1 yeah i thought so
I have a 2ltr hydration back pack with a 600ml water bottle and just for added measure i take 6 mini boxes of raisins, i also have 2 inner tubes strapped to my bike frame, i would however like to see gmbn do the London to brighton off-road challenge of 74 miles in one day which i am doing so come on lads come join us on an epic day on the 22nd of September 2018
Nice bike, that's the EURO /GERMAN version I guess? I see the German site lists the 12 speed and the 11 speed XTR, I have a 2016 Focus Raven max SL XTR with XRC 1200 wheels, MCFK carbon bars, etc.... I been thinking of a 2019 Canyon Exceed 12 speed
Yeah probably the euro version, but I think its a 2017 model so may have changed slightly since
Hm long journeys. I am a bike messenger, i deliver food from restaurant to customer and i ride 8 hours per working day. I usually have packed a litre of water, like 8 bananas and two energy bars to last through the day. Also tubes, pump, multitool and 8000mah battery charger.
I do about 70-120km per day.
Neil, try out the Trans Cambrian Ride.
Great clip! Apologies in advance if I missed it in the clip, but I am curious to know if you took chain lube with you, and if you ever had to lube the chain over the course of a 100mi.
No, I just lubed up my chain with WD40 dry lube before the ride. That lasted fine
Neil, do you find that your legs or bum rub on the saddle or top tube bags?? Thanks.
No I didnt
132km xc ride on an enduro bike
When are we going to see a GNBN: Bikebacking series/channel?? ❤
Richard Bergh That would be an interesting series of they did it off road, but they don't need another channel at all
No new channel but definitely some more bikepacking/ adventure videos
Haha, enough new channels even for you? I've got to say the gmbn tech channel is actually pretty good though.
I'm not a fan of embn but it gets ebikes of the main channel which is good in some ways.
Did you change anything from what you usually have with the fork's sag and PSI for such a long ride?
No, with the extra weight they sagged in a bit more and actually worked pretty well as they were
What did you use to plan your journey? Google Maps only seems to show road routes instead off off-road ones. Thanks.
Ride with GPS
Neil Donoghue Thanks mate
Why would you want a 32 stepcast fork?
@gmbn tech what size jersey is that?
you guys should check "holly no mates" youtube channel for long rides
Ho Neil, what weight have the bike before and after put on all the package?
You think that in a road/off road like these is possible to do it better with a gravel?
I start from a cannondale slash 2013 frame to make a gravel for use it as a road/easy xc bike... Now I don't know what kind of rigid fork put on with my small budget: the Chinese one are tapered, 15x100 and around 120 eu, but I don't know if I will broke my teeth soon or later... What to test these kind of rigid fork, a fatigue test for a group of Chinese fork?
(Excuse for my English...)
Hey luca e, it's hard to tell if the Chinese forks will be good or not. Some people use them for years, and have no problems. If you don't ride very hard on them, they will probably be ok.
I forgot to weigh the bike! But it is 9.7Kg before, probably another 2-3kg with bags and kit
Thank's GMBN and Neil !!!
Neil, what watch are you wearing?
What watch are you wearing?
Well done for that speed me and my bike top out at 30 mph at a push.
could yous do a vid on how to get faster at these speeds ?
My fastest speed on OLD 20 years HT mtb was 59 kmh(37 mph). If you have physical fitness and right wind you can do it easily.
Zagica ive been pushin my self but i think its because im 16 maybe soon ill go faster
I will be 35 this year and wha I can say to you is just be patient. Keep pushing yourself. Don't ride all the time, instead go maybe for a run tu chsnge your activities a bit. You will go faster sooner or later, you will get fitness and endurance for longer rides(mine was 54 km, thats about 33 miles). When you won't look how fast you are going and actually focus more on your riding and surrounding you will go like the wind. ;)
Zagica thanks ill try
Did you run tubeless in those Race Kings?
Yes
Has anyone worked out the price of all that gear? I’d guess we’re closing in on 10K, does this answer the “Is mountain biking too expensive?” question? :)
Not having any luck googling the sous de creme chamois cream. You have a link?
TriBrit inTX I think he means sudocreme
Sam Haven sudocrem? Why would that be used as a chamois cream? It's a healing cream not a lube.
Sudocrem- it's for nappy rash but works well for chamois cream
Just rode 700kms in a seven day stage race (GAES Pilgrim Race) from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia with less gear on my bike than you took for your “long” day ride. Seemed a bit excessive to me. Obviously I didn’t have to film anything. Hope you enjoyed your ride! Ride on! Tim
It's really about what you're happy riding with, no? Neil wanted a bit more, and we all have different needs. Great job with your stage race though! 👍
Totally agree with you and anyone should go out with what they feel is appropriate. However, you guys do set the benchmark for a lot of new MTB riders, who might be put off thinking; "I can't do that because I don't have a so and so". I hope anyone considering longer days in the saddle will just have a go and maybe make sure they have their mobile with them, with means to keep it charged and letting people know their route and approximate schedule. I'd be happy to share my set up on a Spcialized Epic for the 700kms, if it's of interest. Thanks for the great vids and interesting content. Tim
Yep, camera, microphones and batteries took up quite a bit of space
Yes I can imagine Neil, nice extra few grams on your light, responsive bike! Further kudos for completing the ride with the metalwork in your ankle. Ride on buddy! Tim
Xc>trail
a lot of water and calories for energy
👍
#askgmbntech Can I make my SRAM Guide R brakes more bitey?
Train your fingers to be faster.
New pads, clean the rotor with alcohol, and do a proper bedding of the pads.
Paul Billings Yeah, sorry but the brakes are brand new and I have bedded them in properly and actually I have started really liking the good modulation that those provide! I came from Shimano SLX brakes so I have just used to the ON/OFF feeling.
Resin pads have harder initial bite compared to metallic.
Thx everyone!
Does this mean Neil is gettting older?
NEVER
So after banging on endlessly about tubeless tyres, Neil carries two spare seats nner tubes.
Just for emergencies- tears in tyres etc
Tubeless had advantages, but it is not indestructible.
Dude it's just a 160km, it's looks like you're going for at least 24h
Agreed but I had a camera, microphone, spare batteries etc that take up a lot of space
The longest marketing vid...
No one demands from you to buy something.
shilling for canyon and bike industry as per usual. I will never consider canyon just because of this marketing BS.
Actually you get more bike from companies like Canyo, Commencal, YT, Propain etc because they are direct sales brands. So no middle men in shops where they take your money away for far lower speced bike than direct sales brands. For example, you can get top end enduro bike at yt for 5200 eur top end carbon model or 4500 eur for top end carbon trail bike while scott, gt etc barely start putting a bit better components.
Hi ansis maleckis, we are sponsored by Canyon and a number of other component, apparel and bike manufacturers. We don't hide this fact, and we obviously use the equipment because that's how we are able to put these videos out. It's not marketing BS, as you say, as we are using the equipment to do things that we want to do anyway. And it's a huge thanks to our sponsors who help us achieve these things.
