      basically? bivvy bag, a tarp and use my bike as poles, cause topeak doesnt have for 24 inch wheels, but, bikamper is a good tent for bikepacking.
      also a 2L hidrobag, first aid kit, survival kit, powerbanks, extra batteries, head lamp, cat food can stove and alcohol, 500ml pan for cooking, liofilized food from aptonia or mountain house, swissknife like victorinox, mosquito repelent, sunscream, paracord, firestarter and ferrrocerium, lighter, silvertape, extra spares for my bike, tools, foldable water bottle, tissues, baby wipes, sawyer filter, slippers, half toothbrush and paste, small bottle of shower gel,cable ties, fixed-blade survival knife and etc, in a saddle bag, backpack and waist bag. the bag and tarp on the bars, and a tool bottle on the bottle support. like the pump in its place.
      sorry for my bad english but im portuguese and im doing backpacking for a long time.
      here's the link for cat can stove, its awesome and extra light!

      The frame triangle stuffed with a bag, i got myself a "king cage top cap bottle cage mount" with extensions/cantilevers on it, providing a mounting option for a bottle cage - made life a lot easier.

      Trek 1120 for now, but upgrading to the Full Stache. If you ever feel inclined to do some "proper" bikepacking head across the pond and spend a week on the Colorado Trail or Arizona Trail.

    First time I went backpacking I took most of my stuff on panniers, including my water. NEVER AGAIN!!! So sketchy on descents. Threw me all over the place. Now I take the bare minimum cable tied to my frame (don't cut the tails off and you can use them to reopen them) and in my back pack. It keeps me more in control and I'm used to wearing it anyway.
    I take a tiny one man tent, sleeping bag and roll mat. Wear waterproof socks and take my usual rain jacket. Compression top and leggings are my emergency clothes and I always have an emergency blanket in my cycling kit. I have a tiny fold up stove and super noodles and a big bag of chocolate covered raisins. That's it other than my usual cycling kit. I use my usual cycling bag 25 litres. I love taking the absolute bare minimum.
    Usually go about 40-50km and have bothies close by in case of emergencies. I switch my phone off when not in use.
    Should probably add that I only do it in fair weather and go wild camping in the middle of nowhere. I will be enlisting a hip flask from now on! For medicinal brandy in case of wanting to drink brandy.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 лет назад

      Sounds like a great setup! And nothing wrong with fair weather bike packing!

    I’m just now rigging up my bike for camping. I’m making all my own bags and hangers. I even built a front carrier from a ladder rack intended to be mounted on the wall of your garage. It works great and it’s foam covered so it looks great.
    I’m using a camping chair bag ; not the chair to stow all my gear in. This is secured by the extra sewn on adjustable straps. Even more straps an I can attach additional bags to this one.
    I’ve included four water carriers on the frame for balance and mounted as low as possible for a low CG.
    My tent is stowed in my repurposed bag along with all my kitchen and clothing. This is stowed under the hanger in the front and protruding forward instead of perpendicular to the direction of travel.
    I am making a curved carrier for the rear to follow the radius of the tire just below the midway point to carry heavier gear.
    I have changed the material of my brakes to a composite that has twice the gripping power and life than standard brake pads.
    I’ve included a first aid kit, rain poncho and further modified lightweight folding camping chair. Several hundred feet of nylon upholstery thread. One strand will lift nearly 120#. Three strands will lift 400#.

    The mountain bike packing kit seems to be a very viable option as an emergency Bug Out Vehicle setup due to its high mobility and simplicity. I've been torn between a Gravel or Mountain Bike, but your video has me leaning to a MB. I would probably install rear paniers to carry extra food and equipment if SHTF and I had to relocate. I like the clever tent. Thanks a lot!

    as a beginner Bikepacker I definitely overpacked, but for a 2nd overnight attempt I think I did pretty well, more research next time, and slightly less kit, I used a retro alu early 90s MTB with panniers, really reliable and easy to fix, once you have the tools and spares, Thanks for the tips, everything helps, hopefully doing another over this June weekend in this nice weather

    Just wanted to say guys that I find bikepacking the single most interesting thing you can do with a bike. I recently discovered bicycle touring, done some credit card tours in Asia and am training up for something epic when I'm ready. I love all GMBN/GCN content, even hard core roadie and race news, but for me personally the bikepacking segments on GCN/GMBN are the best thing since disk brakes!
    More please... gear reviews, expert advice, destination ideas.. whatever you think is cool. The GCN network is the best channel on RUclips, hands down.
    Thanks guys!

      Doesn't have to be all far flung tour footage... you can demonstrate evaluate and review bikepacking gear (tents, lights, trailers, solar, water, sleeping kit etc, even shameless advertisements plugs and I'd watch it... eagerly. : D

      You guys have the clout and audience engagement to make bespoke bikepacking gear vendors snap too and put their new kit in front of the camera. Right now I have to visit 20 different channels and 3 or more websites to get the scoop. I cant be the only person chomping at the bit for this new found (to me) hobby.

    I did the London to Santorini via France and Italy trip alone on a Peugeot MTB bike back in 1990... No chunnel then, got the ferry from Dover... No suspension on the bike, karrimor side panniers on a rack, front bag on the handlebars... Goretex rainwear was new and high-tech (and expensive) back then... stayed at a few Youth Hostels from time to time for a hot shower and a slightly softer bed... great memories - the endless fields of sunflowers in France, stopping for the baguette and beer for lunch, pitching a tent in a field in the dark, and waking up surrounded by cows... cold baked beans straight from the can for dinner - using Paper maps, no GPS, smart phones, social media or digital cameras back then... As an Aussie contracting in the UK, it was a great adventure and I saw so much of Europe... at 55 years old these days,, I might do it again on an e-bike, but perhaps in a group, and a higher ratio of hotels to fields probably... Love seeing a new generation discover the freedom... The Eurail pass helped me get between a few points that looked like nothing on maps, but were almost impossible by road. I almost didn't make it, nearly got arrested in Paris at 2 in the morning for riding the wrong way down a one way St looking for the train station... Great memories... do it whilst you are young and single... Fittest I have ever been... BTW, lock your bike up, even on the train...

    Tarptent do some v light easy set up tents, import tax here in Sweden makes it a bit more expensive but....just the job!

    I spent 5 months in Asia doing a loop through Thailand,Cambodia,Vietnam,Laos back to Thailand.
    Pair MTB shorts + separate nicks.
    Touring SPD shoes doubled as going out shoes.
    2x socks
    Rain cape.
    2 Tee shirts+shorts.
    Flip flops.
    Toiletries+spare/tools.
    That`s all you need touring Asia,if you need anything just buy along the way.

    ! go tubed when bikepacking, why?
    A tube can be patched up quite a number opf times before you even need to swap it and patch kits are tiny and can be rolled into a spare tube

    • @WasabiWei
      @WasabiWei 6 лет назад +4

      They mention having tubes and a repair kit in the video. I wonder whether they were running tubeless with tubes ready to go in case of air loss/ trouble re-inflating on the trail or chose tubes right from the start. Tubeless has advantages that apply to bikepacking such as self-sealing most punctures, better traction and ride quality, and near immunity to snake-bite punctures from square-edged rocks in the grass while loaded etc. On my little bikepacking trips I ran tubes and was very aware of how easy it would be to get snakebites. I have since gone tubeless and love it but have not bikepacked since switching over. I can imagine burping out, not sealing the bead, and having to install a tube in a tire that is goopy from sealant not being the greatest experience either. I have some very absorbent shop towels and a plastic bag in my repair kit with my tubes but I bet it is still a bit messy to pop a tube in a tire that was run tubeless. Latex really works, and really sticks to everything and gets everywhere as intended!

    • @lacucaracha111111
      @lacucaracha111111 6 лет назад

      + you need rims that are tubeless ready in the first place (not many "cheap" bikes offer that)

    Rode with a similar setup across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. 12 days. I should have brought a puffer jacket that compresses smaller, and shoes instead of the sandals I brought. I wore a backpack for three days, then ditched it. It was heavy on my back and just made more stops to fill up water bottles in the cages.

  • @PFULMTL
    @PFULMTL 6 лет назад

    Look into a Woho anti-sway bar because it has space for two bottle cage mounts and it prevents the rear seatbag from wobbling on the bumps. Then you can use a larger frame bag for other things.

    Man i got a nice slim 1 tent for like 60 bucks that doesnt require your bike to house that is ultralight.. I tested it out by setting it in the back yard for 4 days during a heavy thunderstorm coming through. The frame itself is a net with the rainfly clipped in and I took a few towels and laid them on the ground. After the "tsunami" all the cloths were still dry, without me treating the outer layer first.. so this tent can be used as a bug net as well

    I've got the same Topeak bags you guys have got. Although I've only used them on my road bike. The backloader doesn't work too well with rear suspension and a dropper post and the toploader doesn't fit into my front triangle. Maybe I've got to get my old 90s steel hardtail out to use it for MTB bikepacking.

    With the right tools (I used a simple bike tool kit ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L that you can strap to the bike) it's simple to assemble. As a 270lb guy looking for a way to get more exercise that's easy on my feet I have been impressed by this bike. The tires ship with air in the tires, but before you ride you need to pump them up som more, but once you do you can ride with confidence. You'll definitely want to replace the seat if you're going to ride for any real distance, but that's the case with most bikes. I'm loving it and it has given me a hobby from my youth back.

    Put your sleeping bag in you seat bag. But don't put it in the stuff sack. The stuff sack has a specific shape to it. If you just stuff your sleeping bag in your seat bag you can shove other stuff in there. That way the bag forms around the other gear you put in there. This us only important if you are short on space. Maybe for a multi day trip.

    Very nice video! I'm hoping to make my first bike packing journey soon! Thanks for all the tips! Also I interviewed two bike packers and made a video about them on my channel (one cycled from Africa to Europe and one from Belgium to France).. I wondered if you'd like to take a look and tell me if you agree with the information they shared 🚲
    Wishing you both the best!

    What packs do you use? I am planning a trip for next year and think those would work very well for a week long trip.

      The guys used a range from Topeak. They also have a whole bunch of mounting solutions for bottles etc. Check it out here: www.topeak.com/global/en/products/bikepacking

    Awesome video, thanks! Blake, what kind of drone did you use mate? Going on an 8 month VW campervan trip with my girl and bikes, and I'm looking for a small drone that can shoot great footage.

    What is the average kilometer one can ride everyday on a bikepacking trip of over 3 weeks? The terrain will be quite level.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  6 лет назад +1

      That's completely down to you and your fitness level. We've heard of some long-distance cyclists covering and average of 50kms a day over a few months. It's probably best to factor in how long you want to ride for and keep the options w=for where you want to stop for the night open.

    No issues with assembly for me ruclips.net/user/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
