It's nice to see Ashens is willing to do some smaller collabs like this. Plus I'm now being introduced to something I never would have watched without him, which is nice.
It's amazing to see Ashens on this side of the internet. I have been watching his advent calendar thing with Nerd^3 for the last month, and having him appear here is practically a present in itself. That being said. . . 19:43 Why wasn't the joke "What a *dirk* tease."?
Well she did say that hes a patron, hell if i had someone who was a big creator supporting me on patreon id ask for a collab if we were going to be in the same place
I'm an Indonesian and an Instant subscribe. I would recommend to review further into Indonesian horror classics, with low budget effects, story line that doesn't make sense. Kuntilanak, pocong, and suster ngesot is some hilarious ones.
Merry whatever you do this time of year lols Wish ya the best and thanks for the laughs. Keep rocking;) Oh and I’m a big Ashens fan so it’s awesome to see him in your vid!
This was amazing. You two gave some good hearty smiles and chuckles and did right on your mission of taking on this insane lsd laced bowl of bad effects and inane characterization! Merry Christmas to you both!
Indonesian movies seem to have an interesting contradiction in how they frame women. Many characters are frail, timid things who are always intimidated, captured, and raped like the worst sexist stereotypes. YET they often have these really powerful woman characters: queens, sorceresses, and warriors who are really amazing and kick ass. So compared to Euro/American movies they tend to be much better and much worse at the same time.
Popo Bawa many time when powerful women are villianized it can also be seen as sexist. When women like that are constantly portrayed as such it usually means those characteristics are frowned upon or at least seen as a deviation from the norm of femininity.
I guess that might be the intention. I have always tended to find hero/villain dichotomies simplistically bogus myself, so my theory of mind doesn't jive with most narrative tropes, and yields weird interpretations. I tend to celebrate gender non-normativity where I find it. It would probably be more sensitive if I could be aware of when an "evil gay" stereotype is being employed for political purposes.
@@HereComesPopoBawa I get that, there's also the "butt evil is cool" problem. Its hard to even be mad when the nonconformist villain is well, interesting enough to do so & actually see as a bad thing if your not already adverse, especially if the "good guy" is just some guy or worse somebody whose so infantilized by convention that they've made half the "problems" of the text as far as the "bad guy" worse.
I will say this for both Mystics in Bali and End of the Wicked: It's fascinating seeing how non-European cultures conceive of witchcraft. Of course, a lot of modern Indonesian and West African witchcraft lore is the result of cross pollination with ideas brought by European missionaries. The Third World and other Christian but non-Western locales are like summer homes for bigoted religious maniacs--they get to promote all the terrible shit they no longer get away with at home.
This movie is a HUGE pile of random stuff salad. I saw it some time back when a friend of mine bought a pile of cut rate bootleg VHS movies and we basically sat around for a day seeing what was on them. This was one of them and 'memorable' is CERTAINLY correct! Hail Hagan and thanks for the awesome gift of this amazing review!
Regarding the uncle to nephew thing... technically, if the uncle was some sort of monk or priest but the technique was supposed to stay in the family that might make sense. Now, why the technique had to remain in the family while the user had to become some sort of recluse - that's beyond me.
OMG! You've not only heard of Mystics in Bali but have watched and reviewed it?! Dude... be my friend! ;) Seriously... people look at me weird whenever I try to talk about that movie. (I mean... I've usually got a hedgehog in my purse or a pocket so people tend to look at me weird in general, but STILL! Awesome review.) Also? I would read the shit out of The Leak Ngakak! Also also - the main black-magic apprentice chick's eyes bother me for some reason. Pretty sure her weird eyes ate my soul.
Any idea on who did the dubbing? I just ask because the one dubbing the leak sounds very similar to the person who dubbed the hunch-back fairy in the MST3K-reviewed movie Jack Frost.
Don't they also have a legend about a mythical greasy rapist that attacks random women? ( an "Orang Minyak" ??) And it's actually inspired REAL rapists to grease themselves up before they go a-rapin'...in order to evade capture?? I'm pretty sure this concept has been featured in some old regional horror flicks, possibly from the Philippines...Please review these films, If they exist...
soooo when she was sucking up that fetus like a Gogurt, shouldn't she have vomited up baby guts instead of a live mouse? What does that say about what that poor woman was pregnant with? Maybe she didn't know how to perform mouth to mouth and just got it badly wrong?
I know enough about those myths to grasp why they did some of the things yet i am hoping the dubbing fucked up the story as what i know just makes it make less sense
Trump? I thought you talking about Obama, that was literally his campaign, promising to give everybody everything they wanted, it was even said by people in the media that Obama could be "whoever you wanted him to be". Now THAT reference would have been good social commentary. This just felt forced.
Sigh. Trump voters will never come to grips with the fact that they elected a shameless, lying con artist. There's really no point in trying to convince you.
I am an Indonesian and have been a big fan of Ashens for years. It is so weird for me to listen to him talking about something Indonesian...
Dian Azhari Syam me2
Hahahaha
It's nice to see Ashens is willing to do some smaller collabs like this. Plus I'm now being introduced to something I never would have watched without him, which is nice.
My friend is Indonesian and says that this is highly regarded in her country. It's certainly interesting and entertaining.

Merry Christmas to you both!
Oh DNAG Diamanda and Ashens? Truly the Grass Mask has blessed us all this day.
I want to start a boy band called "The Leak Ngakakstreet Boys"
22:55 - I have to correct that, Pennangalen comes actually from the name of the first Nebulan headmaster partner of Fortress Maximus, Galen! :D
The “floating head vampire” thing could be scary if it didn’t look and move like a half-baked Halloween effect on a string.
So weird seeing Ashens without his couch. I just figured it was part of his person
Ashens is just two hands and a sofa, change my mind
I approve of the Davis Aurini references.
References to The Taint AND Myra Breckenridge within the first five minutes? Oh this is gonna be good.
Merry Mithras to Diamanda and Omega.

As a Yank...yes I was assuming that those terms for drunkard were real until you joked about it.
Dodgy Pasties, or as we call them in America - Hot Pockets.
Pasties, regardless of their ability to work properly, don't resemble Hot Pockets >.>
That’s why he referred to them as dodgy pasties.
It's like a Christmas present waiting for sundown to appear. Thanks! Merry...um...whatever one celebrates there.
Happy regular day to Hagan and Merry Christmas to Omega!

I reckon it could be a new frontier for western audiences, theres some great south eastern horror out there
24:53 Ok, that reaction from Ashens has to be genuine.
I remember seeing this movie when I was a kid.
The Doctor regenerates AND we get a Hagan/Ashens crossover?! Xmas is saved!!!!
So this is what that episode of Gravity Falls was spoofing.
Suddenly, a wild Jeavons appears!
What does is say about me as a person that I had prior knowledge of the Penanggalan before coming into this?
Says that you know stuff, knowing stuff is awesome.
I do enjoy a good bit of knowledge
And knowing is half the battle.
happy saturnalia mistress
Whelp. This is the best review of this movie I've ever seen. Bar none.
Happy Christmas to Diamanda and her lovely talented wife. Edit, and Ashens too. lol
I just hope the mice were okay :(

2:48 "Fuck my organs, i'm getting out of here"
a longer review than Brandon Tenold's. Merry Christmas
*welcome to +62 ashens*
Mystics in Bali reminds me of a black zombie 1970s film called *sugar hill*
Regarding the uncle to nephew thing... technically, if the uncle was some sort of monk or priest but the technique was supposed to stay in the family that might make sense. Now, why the technique had to remain in the family while the user had to become some sort of recluse - that's beyond me.
Merry Nondescrit Holliday !
Hagan's thumbnail game is real.
And this is why we learn the powers of darkness from the likes of Cthulhu, kids
Shit those masks in the movie's opening credits are really cool!
Holy fuck thats Ashens
It's the old man from scene 24 ...
"Sounds like Yoda's going to sexually assault her."
"E.T. want laaap-daaaaance!"
In Oka's(sp?) defense, you'd have to be pretty bad ass to wear bed sheets as robes.

Tried to like this. But sorry. Couldnt.
